Gmail assumes that you don't want to see them, and unless a gmail
account holder checks "all mail" they are hidden.
This is most likely to be Dave's problem.

[GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-30 Thread Jon Leech
Are there any written or video tutorials for moving shares between
stock accounts? There's very little about this in the manual or the list
archives, and my attempts end up subtracting shares from one account and
adding what appears to be USD to the other account.

Re: [GNC] Import qif does not remember account allocation.

2018-12-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone
DaveW,

As noted earlier, receiving copies of your own messages is a preference you can
set. It defaults to ’no’ because many people keep copies of their own sent
mail, thus our mail clients thread our sent messages into the conversation
where they belong. (when using thread or conversation view features of mail
clients, otherwise a check of the ’sent’ folder will show it.) If you either
don’t keep your own sent mail, or want to get another copy from the list
anyway, simply log in to mailman and set that preference.

If you just occasionally want to make sure one of your postings made it to the
list, you can check the web archive and see it there.

If your message fails at the server level, you’ll get a bounce message.

If it is held for moderation, (such as accidentally sending from a different
account) you’ll get an automated reply to that effect.

Regards,
Adrien

I apologise for the duplicated messages. (I was troubled by the

Thank you very much for the very helpful comments you provided. I now
understand it is imperative to make/correct the account assignment
during the wizard process. (As an aside, that the wizard doesn't show
the $ amount on the appropriate page, often makes it difficult to
recall where the transaction belongs. Just by way of comment.)

All of that said, it seems that I should await, or install, version 3.x

- In the register go to the accounts field and type the first letter of an

Now it’s messed up:

- hitting Right, Left or the CMD key selects to everything after the first
letter.
- Right and left do nothing any more.
- Trying to select another position with the mouse does initially seem to work.
But as soon as you want to do something you are back to the previous selection

If you typed more in step one, the selection will start after the length of
your input before selecting the account from the picker.

Issue is when I enter a new transaction. It auto-fills the previous similar transaction which is what I
want but when I go to edit the details - let's say I want to change a word using Shift-Back (or
Forward) arrow, it selects either a section of the words starting about 4 characters from the left and
extending about 8 characters across, rather than the parts of the words or whole words that I want to
remove. For example "if the first words are "coaching session" it will highlight
"ching sessi"), no matter where I have the cursor positioned in the field when I depress the
shift key. However, if I start typing from the positioned cursor, the issue disappears... I can then
edit as usual.

It's not a big issue... but irritating.

Yea, that's what I was wondering about...if anyone else wants to chime in,
comments welcome. I value my current installation (it works 85%), so a
little nervous about walking down the valley of death :)

I'm not that much further advanced either!  I presume you have a
software manager on that distro.  I did a Google search and this came up:

**Uninstall apps**

1. Click the *apps* list icon in the launcher at the bottom of the screen.
2. Find your *app* in the list and right-click (click with two fingers
   on a *Chromebook*) its icon.
3. Select *Remove* from Chrome.

I hope that helps. I am presuming that you can just download the deb
file, click on it, and your software manager will install it.

Now, I don't have experience with anyone installing it on a non Ubuntu
box. So, this will be an experiment. It's up to you. I won't be hurt if
you pass!  But I would like to know if it does work on non-Ubuntu boxes.

That it is. I wasn't aware that running Wayland made some applications
ignore the $DISPLAY setting.

Is that by design or is there some other environment variable I should be
setting ?

Yes, missed that when making the email. The correct links are:

Download GnuCash for Win32:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/3.4/gnucash-3.4.setup.exe
Download GnuCash for Mac-Intel:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/3.4/Gnucash-Intel-3.4-1.dmg

The URLs for the tarballs are correct.

FYI, the GitHub download links for the installers should point to
/downloads/3.4 instead of /downloads/3.3 or you’ll get a 404.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash-created "closing" entries

2018-12-30 Thread David Cousens
Stan, Mike

Australia has the similar provisions with your primary residence being
capital gains exempt so even realized gains are not taxable income in our
case. There are some restictions, e.g. if you sell within 12 months or have
a pattern of selling and purchasing which indicates conducting a property
investment business. Capital gains taxes only apply for realized gains and
losses on securities and investments.

I have dealt with that not with a separate set of books but by using
separate sub accounts for assets subject to capital gains tax and those that
are not with corresponding taxable and non-taxable sections in my income
accounts and expense accounts where necessary. I close those to
corresponding subaccounts of Equity:retained earnings so that I have the
required amounts for doing the appropriate tax calculations available from
the balance sheet. You can also customize the balance sheet and other
reports, to produce custom reports giving a tax specific version of the
reports as required.

If the tax status of the property or investment changes e.g. a previous
investment property becomes a principal residence
and you sell the previous principal residence on retirement, you can just
shift it between taxable non-taxable categories at the data of the change.
(not shifting the asset account, just the asset value to a new account in
the appropriate sub account).

We also have a fringe benefits tax payable by the employer on such
additional benefits not taxable in the hands of the employee but the
employee also has to report such benefits on their tax return. Our tax
system is a little simpler as our states ceded the right to collect certain
taxes to our federal government in return for imposition of a GST with a tax
sharing system with the states so there are no state taxes collectable from
employees ( income tax was informally ceded to the federal government at
federation in return for specific purpose grant allocations from income tax
which are largely population based). Employers however are still subject to
some taxes at the state level.

Thanks Derek, but that's my issue. $DISPLAY is set but gnucash doesn't
forward the display ot the xserver in $DISPLAY unless I force it by
manually supplying the $DISPLAY variable to the --display parameter.

e.g.

This works:

gnucash --display="$DISPLAY"

While this doesn't:

gnucash

Other non-gnome x applications work as expected. Gnome applications also
require me to append --display "$DISPLAY" to the commandline.

2018-12-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone
DaveW,

Your messages *do* appear on the list:
https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2018-December/thread.html

Look near the bottom of the page.

Receiving a copy of your own messages is a mailman user preference you can
change. Personally, I prefer not to receive copies of my own posts as they are
in my ’sent’ folder already and my mail client threads them in where they
belong as part of the conversation. If I received copies, I’d have them twice.
(unless I chose never to keep copies of my own sent messages in general)

[GNC] *.deb package for GnuCash 3.4 Released

2018-12-30 Thread Stephen M. Butler

For those interested in a deb file but not willing to compile yourself:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=172BMIvLgD7twcGEWkR5GcddoZ_A4QWfY -->
gnucash_3.4-0-1_amd64.deb

The zero after 3.4 is the commit number after the tag (there are
currently none) and the one after that is the first attempt to build
that on my box.

I have removed the interim 3.3 versions from Google drive and now only
have the base 3.3 version also available:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1PUEq8qE4yzq_HrBfJZQ376QbdTmJdYsP -->
gnucash_3.3-0-1_amd64.deb

These were built on Ubuntu 18.04 based on a git pull of the maint branch.

the bill date, not to the current date - followup:
Use neutral time on entry post dates instead of canonical time
• Bug 767772 - Associated file with transaction is lost when moving
entry between accounts
• Bug 775580 - Inaccurate information provided for "Common Accounts" when using

The following fixes and improvements were not associated with bug reports:

• Set up filepath utils to determine the GNC_CONFIG_HOME in the same
way as GNC_DATA_HOME.
Until now GNC_CONFIG_HOME was more or less hard-coded. Now it can be set via
environment variable GNC_CONFIG_HOME. In addition it will automatically be
created to avoid potential user confusion.
• Redesign gnc-uri-utils
• gnc_uri_get_components will now return NULL as protocol if
the input is a normal file system path instead of a uri (it used to return
'file')
• gnc_uri_get_protocol will now return NULL if the input is a
normal file system path instead of a uri (it used to return 'file')
• gnc_uri_is_file_protocol now returns FALSE if protocol is
NULL (it used to return TRUE)

Re: [GNC] [GNC-dev] GnuCash 3.3 Released

2018-12-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Thomas,

Try this:

Open the folder where you installed GnuCash (/Applications is the default)

Right-click GnuCash.app and choose Open.

You should be prompted to confirm you want to open the file downloaded from the
internet.

The app will start to open, but then stop.

Now, still in the installation folder, double left-click GnuCash.app to start
it. It should open and appear in the dock where you can lock it.

If this still does not work, you may have other issues.

Adrien

At some point you would have booked a transaction to create a short-term
receivable asset with a value of $100 and the other side against
whatever you used to lend them the money (cash, checking account,
credit-card, etc).  Let's say you gave cash out of your wallet (also an
asset account:

Asset:Cash  CR $100

Asset:Receivable DR $100

When that person pays your expense (say they pay $100 for your cable bill):

Expense:Cable  DR $100

Asset:Receivable CR $100

Note:  If they also paid interest of $5.00 for the use of that money
then the last would become:

Expense:Cable DR $105

Asset:Receivable CR $100

Income:Interest  CR $5

David.
And in the GENERAL case, "net worth" can be tricky. For some, major
assets might be intangible and/or conditional.

In cases like that, you might need to keep more than one set of books.
Not in the illegal sense but one set in terms of what your jurisdiction
considers real income/assets and another to include these other factors.
To give a very obvious example, in as far as I know all US
jurisdictions, increase in equity of one's primary residence is not
considered income (and only conditionally a capital gain) and for many
of us this can be a very large component of net worth. Even when this
is just income/expense might be important in order to compare job
opportunities, etc. (let's say one of these included seriously major
"benefits" like housing, vehicle, etc. that are not considered part of
income by the jurisdiction).

Re: [GNC] Backspace key stops working

2018-12-30 Thread Christoph R
Ok, I digged a bit more and found the following behavior:

- In the register go to the accounts field and type the first letter of an
existing account
- the accounts picker comes up.
- select the account.
- Select any other input field

Now it’s messed up:

- hitting Right, Left or the CMD key selects to everything after the first
letter.
- Right and left do nothing any more.
- Trying to select another position with the mouse does initially seem to work.
But as soon as you want to do something you are back to the previous selection

If you typed more in step one, the selection will start after the length of
your input before selecting the account from the picker.

I did a little bit more digging this evening and have had some success:

gnucash --display="$DISPLAY"

Behaves as expected and forwards the display to the ssh tunnel, just like
xeyes, xlogo, google-chrome, etc do without needing to specify the display.

I have since noticed that other gnome apps also require me to force the
display with --display="$DISPLAY"

Is there some other environment variable that's causing this?

Do you mean backing up your accounts data? If so then that is
something everyone should already be doing regularly. A computer or

If you mean you want to backup the software itself so you can easily

something one would do, though I believe Windows has a mechanism for
keeping a snapshot of the current system so you can revert if you want
to. You can always uninstall the latest and install an earlier one if

I thought that was a known issue on 3.3 (I am using it on Ubuntu). It
is not the same issue reported by Ethan where backspace stops working

Re: [GNC] Import qif does not remember account allocation.

2018-12-30 Thread David Carlson
Dave W,

Once is enough with the duplicated messages. The previous responses by
John and Derek seemed to cover your concerns but since you are asking for
elaboration, I as an experienced user can answer your questions #1 & #2.
The QIF Import wizard in the GnuCash Releases 2.6.21 and earlier assign the
unspecified account when there is not enough history detected by the
Bayesian matcher to assign an existing account to a transaction. The user
must monitor the import and correct those transactions during the import
process as well as catching and correcting any other assignment errors
arising from similar transactions in the history before accepting the
assignments in the import. Since each financial institution structures
their descriptions somewhat differently, it sometimes takes much more
history to get better accuracy with the matching. Even after many years
using the OFX importer, I still get frequent mis-assignments between
gasoline purchases and restaurant purchases in one of my bank accounts. In
my experience, the OFX import wizard historically has given me better
results than the QIF importer, and I have few accounts that do not offer
OFX format.

To make things more interesting, the 3.x release series has the importers
re-configured to work differently so that it is, as a practical matter,
necessary to start over with matching once you have migrated to that
release series. The bright side of that change is that it should work
better fairly quickly, and best of all, it will be easier to purge out bad
history when needed.

I cannot answer your questions #3 and #4.
