Re: [GNC] Additional check for out of balance 'Trial Balance' and 'Balance Sheet'

2023-03-19 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

Further investigation found that in the 'Edit Account' panel, the 'Smallest
fraction' was set at '1' on this particular account, and the amount was
being rounded up on one side, causing the mismatch. Setting the 'Smallest
fraction' to 'Use Commodity Value' and running 'Repair All' sorted the
problem.

I hope the above may be a solution for someone and save them time, if not
hair.

It bears repeating, as soon as rounding is involved, exactly in balance
goes out the window. It is simply a reality of mathematics that rounded
A + rounded B is not necessarily equal to rounded (A + B). Your problem
could exist even if both sides were rounded/

LOL -- in my working days, one of the things I did a number of times was
calculate the value of the "fuzz" (the maximum discrepancy between
calculations done in different order as a result of limits in
precision/rounding --- so the computer program would consider the two
equal if the difference were less than "fuzz"). And those of us doing
calculations in science/engineering know that the order in which we do
them can have a great effect on the possible "error" << so we choose the
order of calculations that minimizes that >>

In its original form. double entry bookkeeping could demand exact
balance because the only operation was addition/subtraction and no
rounding involved.

[GNC] Additional check for out of balance 'Trial Balance' and 'Balance Sheet'

2023-03-19 Thread G R Hewitt
I thought it might be useful to pass on another possible reason for having
an out-of-kilter 'Trial Balance' and 'Balance Sheet'

I spent quite some time in an effort to get mine to balance, they were out
by £3.07 and this amount had steadily grown. I decided I was going to nail
it once and for all and work my may through the General Journal. Quite by
chance I decided to use the cursor keys, rather than scroll with the mouse
wheel - this went at a steady pace checking Credit and Debit were the same.
Then, an error dialogue opened up saying there was a disparity and offered
solutions. I chose 'Manual', but found I couldn't change the errant amount
- even in the register. Note there are small grey squares surrounding the
incorrect entry cells, most useful.
Further investigation found that in the 'Edit Account' panel, the 'Smallest
fraction' was set at '1' on this particular account, and the amount was
being rounded up on one side, causing the mismatch. Setting the 'Smallest
fraction' to 'Use Commodity Value' and running 'Repair All' sorted the
problem.

I hope the above may be a solution for someone and save them time, if not
hair.

[GNC] GnuCash 4.904 Released

2023-03-19 Thread John Ralls
The GnuCash development team announces GnuCash 4.904, the fifth unstable
release leading to GnuCash 5.0.
This is an unstable release for testing purposes. Do not use it with production
data! Make a copy of your book to test this release.
New Features

A new Stock Transaction Assistant to guide you through entering most
investment transactions for stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. You can access it
from Actions>Stock Assistant when you have the Accounts page ora Stock or Fund
account register open.
A new Investment Lots report showing a graph of capital gains and losses in
a period by investment lot. Note that if you don't use the View Lots dialog to
manage capital gains and losses this report won't have anything to show you.
Use Reports>Assets & Liabilities>Investment Lots to see the report.
The Online Quotes facility has been completely rewritten and the old
gnc-fq-check, gnc-fq-dump, and gnc-fq-helper programs have been replaced with
finance-quote-wrapper. The functions performed by those programs may now be
accomplished by passing commands to gnucash-cli -Q, see gnucash-cli --help for
specifics. The perl module requirements have changed with the rewrite: The new
version doesn't need Date::Manip but needs JSON::Parse instead. gnc-fq-update
has been, er, updated to reflect that.
A new tab on the New/Edit Account dialog called More Properties includes
entries to set a high and low limit on an account. That's coupled to a new
column that's available on the Accounts Page, Balance Limit. If you set a high
or low limit and the account balance falls above or below the respective limit
an indicator will be shown in the Balance Limit column.
The description field quickfill in the register now displays a drop-down
list of possible completions instead of just one inline completion.
File import menu items for the MT940, MT942, and DTAUS formats is replaced
with a single Import from AQBanking that supports importing any file format
supported by AQBanking, including the frequently requested CAMT.

The report generated by the Print Invoice button on the Edit Invoice tab
can now be configured as a book option at the bottom of the Business tab; this
permits selecting a saved configuration of one of the standard invoice reports.
Another option enables a delay, during which a dialog box will appear enabling
the user to select a different report.

Note: When saving a configuration make sure that the invoice number is not
set or you'll get that particular invoice instead of the one that you pressed
the button for.

Between 4.903 and 4.904, the following bugfixes were accomplished:
The following fixes will also appear in GnuCash 4.14:

Bug 798570 - Budget totals for income, expenses and remaining to budget
incorrect for one specific date.

The following fixes are in 4.904 only and will not appear in GnuCash 4.14:

Bug 798558 - Irregular line spacing in Account Tree View
Bug 798773 - Help file launches in browser when using command-H to hide
GnuCash

This is a MacOS-only problem. Note that for the fix to have effect you must
remove the file accelerator-map from GNC_CONFIG_HOME when GnuCash isn't running.
Bug 798778 - GnuCash quits abruptly when attempting to edit options for
certain reports.
Bug 798781 - Printing multiple checks prints duplicate checks
Bug 798787 - gnc-register-owner-option currently broken

The following fixes and improvements were not associated with bug reports:

Fix quotes codecvt to wchar_t error on Windows.
Budget totals for one period would be wrong when increasing the number of
periods.
Change the handling of accelerator maps. Gtk no longer supports changing
these from the menus and the save no longer writes out the accelerators that
have their default values, so to assist users editing them we have generated
default ones that we include with GnuCash and have disabled saving when
quitting GnuCash. At startup GnuCash will check for the presence of the file
accelerator-map in GNC_CONFIG_HOME and if it's not found will copy in the
default one.
Properly parse plus signs while importing numbers in a CSV file.
Fix CSV price import file loading.
CsvImport - actually do as the warning indicates: If an invalid column is
found in a preset, replace it with a NONE column, rather than not inserting a
column at all.

New and Updated Translations: Chinese (Simplified), Croatian, Hungarian,
Japanese, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Swedish
Help translate GnuCash on Weblate: https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/gnucash/

Translators note that there is a new project Program-beta on weblate for this
unstable branch. Having twice the strings causes us to exceed the free account
limit, but Weblate has so far just warned us about it. If we need to change the
branch we'll announce it on gnucash-devel.

Excellent advice. (Thanks for mentioning ChexSystems; I had not thought
to freeze my record there too.)

Not only is the freeze free, but temporarily lifting it, when you
yourself are actually applying for a mortgage or other credit somewhere,
is also free. (At least that's true for credit bureaus; I don't know if
ChexSystems operates under the same rules.)

The bad news is that you have to do it at all of the credit bureaus; one
will not communicate news of a freeze to the others.

I figured out the problem with boost::process's codecvt: It doesn't like empty
strings and if there's no alphavantage key set we were trying to set the
ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY environment variable with an empty string. I've fixed
that, it will be in 4.904 which I'll proceed to release; if nothing goes wrong
that will be later today (well, today if you're in America. I might not make it

Brad,

I just want to note that your acquaintance has a remarkably parochial attitude
about software. GnuCash has been available and actively developed for something
like 25 years.

It seems to me that in this era of "big data," those commercial companies are
more interested in the customer as a source of data mining income than as a
partner using their software.

*And* outages with major commercial platforms (Twitter, Facebook?) underscore
that it is not just open source projects that fail sometimes.

You can use the customer report to get a statement which you can send, this
includes the invoice paid and also outstanding with ageing.

Subject: [GNC] Outstanding / due invoices report?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if there's a built-in report, in a form suitable for sending
to a client, that lists the invoices they currently owe. Or perhaps those
that are overdue?

I'm creating a reminder as a simple email message, but this seems like
something others might need, and therefore something that might be part of
GNC already.

Ideally, it would be nice to be able to append this to any new invoice for
that same customer, maybe.

I have found Business->Customer->Invoices Due Reminder, but that seems to
be solely to tell me what's due/overdue and isn't printable.

Does any such thing exist?

Cheers,
Simon

Re: [GNC] Help with downloading transactions.

2023-03-19 Thread Kalpesh Patel

Being a victim (financial institutions and gov't agencies do not agree with
this in the US as they believe that you and I are just a innocent third party
and largely they are the ones who have been defrauded) of larger theft after a
breach they were able to garner close to six figure fraud in matter of days I
whole heartly agree that should check your transactions frequently as
possible. While most will make you whole eventually, it nonetheless is an
anticipated time-consuming undertaking when you get engulfed in it.

In the US I highly recommend that you look into placing security freeze on
your credit files and at ChexSystems at minimum, which now is free for
everyone unlike in the past where you were charged fee for it.

Those that want to perpetrate fraud have gotten better by surveilling accounts
by putting what appears to be a small (in pennies sometimes) "trial" purchases
over time to see if they can be caught before making a leap. While financial
institutions have very intelligent surveillance systems in place to catch such
activities, you are really the best defense for your account.

Greetings fellow users.

I wanted to try out the latest - though unstable - versions.

Downloaded and installed OK and I get the splash screen then it all

Re: [GNC] Temporary Website URL

2023-03-19 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
