Generalizations aren't helpful, especially if they aren't fully accurate.

To assert that "one can forget Windows entirely" is contradicted by many users'
experiences to the contrary. F::Q has worked for me under Windows for many
years (and on Mac before that).

Please remember to copy the list on all replies.

No, what's expected is what I just got,
1 EUR = 1.072271 USD
so something is still not right with your F::Q installation.

You should have a .cpan folder (the . hides it from Finder but you can say `ls
~/.cpan` on the command line to see if it's there), and so you should be able
to run

ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=
.cpan/build/Finance-Quote-1.54-0/Examples/currency-lookup.pl EUR USD

which should print EUR->USD = 1.072386

but may say "Urgh! Nothing back\n" instead. Unfortunately I don't think it
will do much for diagnostics beyond that.

Silly me! Those buttons are context dependent, so it was normal that I
not see them till I get into the accounts panel or start entering
transactions.

2023-03-20 Thread Stan Brown (using GC 2.6.19)
Thanks for the feedback, David.

While I was waiting for replies, I looked into VirtualBox. It's a lot
more polished and easier to use than the last time I used it, several
years ago. I was worried about how to run Windows in a guest machine,
since I have just the one product key in my host machine, but this very
good video showed me how I could install a Windows 10 guest OS without a
product key:

So I went ahead and installed 4.13 and have started creating the chart
of accounts.

One question: am I missing something, or are the word/icon buttons for
Save-Close-Duplicate-Delete and so on completely gone from 4.13?

As an experienced user of VirtualBox, I would say that your use case is
exactly what VirtualBox is best for, ie temporary computer needs. The
main requirement is having enough RAM and cpu's to share with your other

Re: [GNC] gnucash-user Digest, Vol 240, Issue 44

2023-03-20 Thread Kalpesh Patel
Just like other three major credit bureaus, ChexSystems does NOT charge for
lifting security freezes on temporary basis as of this writing. Not able to
charge fee for security freeze I believe is part of the US law. Be careful
though as these bureaus also tout similar but very different beast creation
of their own called credit lock, which does not have the backing of US laws
or its regulations as does the security freeze.

If you plan to place a security freeze on three main credit bureaus in the
US than recommendation is to extend to Innovis
(https://www.innovis.com/personal/securityFreeze) as part of that security
regime. They also do not charge for lifting security freeze on temporary
basis.

This write up from Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
(https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_consumer-reporting-compa
nies-list.pdf) has a comprehensive list and links for such needs if you want
to explore and become educated in this realm.

Excellent advice. (Thanks for mentioning ChexSystems; I had not thought to
freeze my record there too.)

Not only is the freeze free, but temporarily lifting it, when you yourself
are actually applying for a mortgage or other credit somewhere, is also
free. (At least that's true for credit bureaus; I don't know if ChexSystems
operates under the same rules.)

The bad news is that you have to do it at all of the credit bureaus; one
will not communicate news of a freeze to the others.

How cool, thanks John!
actually under Murugans suggestion, I switched to stable version, but then
again I got the eros for the online price retrieval script I got in the
first place, after a long battle, I decided to try the unstable one..
now although I got the same errors as before (usually about missing /t and
/bin folders in cpan/build I gave up, until I saw by my surprise, that
somehow it got activated even the script didn't finish there.. so it must
be thx to the unstable one..
Once 9.04 comes out, I'll switch back of course!
So happy to have contributed! you guys rock!

[GNC] Two versions, same computer

2023-03-20 Thread Stan Brown (using GC 2.6.19)
I apologize for asking a question that must have been asked before, but
I couldn't turn up answers by googling or in the archives.

Can GC 4.13 coexist on the same Windows 10 machine with GC 2.6.19? They
would be accessing separate data files in separate folders, and would
not be executing simultaneously, but I worry about preferences, reports,
most-recently-used file lists, and anything else that might get stored
in the System Registry or a fixed location.

It might be helpful to explain my use case.

I'm on the board of a small nonprofit. Our longtime volunteer bookkeeper
is bowing out, and the treasurer who will have to take over the
bookkeeping doesn't have experience with any accounting software. We
have an average of just a couple of dozen transactions a month, and the
reports we need are just the standard income statement and balance
sheet, plus transaction reports for the Income:Donors and
Expenses:Musician Fees accounts. There's no need for the software to
print checks or 1099 tax forms (we must file one 1099 for each
non-employee we make payments to), though that would be a nice plus.
I want to put together a chart of accounts and the transactions for
the year to date in GC 4.13. If the treasurer feels comfortable with
entering transactions and pulling reports, I will install everything for
the nonprofit to her computer. All of that will be in the 4.13 and only
that version.
But I'm keeping my own books on my computer, and they're in GC
2.6.19 and only 2.6.19 for now. (I know it's necessary to upgrade in
phases and I'm not ready to do that now.)

I suppose I could install a virtual machine for running 4.13, but that
seems like a lot of work for a short-term need. Another possibility is
the portable 4.13 install at

but I remember some discussion in this list about some reasons not to
use that.

Can I install 4.13 on my current machine without it and 2.6.19
interfering with each other, provide that they don't run simultaneously
or use the same saved reports?

Current shows documents posted which have not reached their due date.
(non-posted documents are not reported) The Aging columns are for Past

There is also a Report option to show linked documents with or without
full detail. This allows you to see which payments have been applied to
which bills/invoices. (and the reverse: which bills/invoices offset each
payment) That might be a bit messy visually to send a customer, but I
find it useful for my own purposes, and it is handy to send if there is
a discrepancy.

Re: [GNC] Outstanding / due invoices report?

2023-03-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
How did you get the Description to populate? Where did you put that text
in the Bill/Invoice or Edit Bill/Invoice window?

There was a recent thread on this subject.

This report cell grabs text from the Notes field of a relevant
transaction, and that works for Payments, but Bills & Invoices don't
seem to have any field which fills anything in there. (and it is locked
for editing in the register(s) once posted)

Adrien

hi Simon

   1. The description in the report is picked up from the details you insert
when posting the transaction (there is description field in the pop up). The
logic is that you may have multiple lines in an invoice, the report needs a
common title.
   2. "Current" means any invoices which still have time to be paid.( Due date
> Report date)
   3. Ageing will start once the invoice becomes due.

i have attached a sample and calculation for your reference

This report looks pretty good, however, I have a couple of questions:

1) I find the description field remains blank, despite my invoices having
non-blank descriptions. Is this normal? Do others find the same thing? Or
did I somehow find a way to mess up my descriptions?

2) In the report it has a row across the bottom listing "current", "0-30

Thanks again,

Re: [GNC] Additional check for out of balance 'Trial Balance' and 'Balance Sheet'

2023-03-20 Thread G R Hewitt
Quite so. I haven't experimented to find out if Gnugash rounds to nearest
or strictly up or down.

Using the up and down cursor keys to select each row invokes the
error-trapping routine that I haven't seen in other programs - Sage Line 50
for example, when I have spent many 'happy' hours going crossed eyed.

It is an excellent feature, and when you choose 'Jump to the other
account', there they all are, highlighted. Now I know about it this will be
my first 'go-to' when checking for such future discrepancies.
