[GNC] Customizing appearance of parent accounts only in Accounts tree

2023-12-01 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,

I'm using Windows 11 and GNUcash 5.4
I'm wondering if there is an easy possibility of highlighting parent
accounts only, by text size, bolding and/or coloring, to make them stand
out when scrolling the accounts tree?

Re: [GNC] Navigation through chart of accounts: shortcuts or bookmarks?

2023-12-01 Thread Adrien Monteleone

I'll add that the workflow for Find Account is:

1. CTRL/CMD-I, which brings up the Find Account dialog
2. start typing your search text, in this case "500" (without the
quotes) and hit ENTER to search
3. the result is a list of matching accounts. Use the up/down arrow keys
to highlight the desired account.

4. hit Enter to jump to the account in the Accounts tab
5. hit SPACE to open that register

That sounds like a lot more clicks, but:

* you get a narrowed down list to choose from
* you can jump to the account and open its register with two very fast
keystrokes after the search
* you can do this even without viewing the Accounts tab. (e.g., while
viewing another register)

The drawback to searching from the Accounts tab using the OP's
quick-type method, is that *only* shows you accounts that are already
visible - that is - expanded on the page. If that part of the tree is
collapsed, the method the OP describes will not find the account. It is
a 'visible text search' feature only and has no cognizance of
'accounts', where the Find Account feature does. It isn't as far as I
know a feature of GnuCash, but something from GTK that came along for
the ride.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] GNU Cash not performing math functions correctly on entry [SOLVED]

2023-12-01 Thread Adrien Monteleone
On those machines it certainly *still is* a nice feature. Yes, some
small businesses still use 40–50 year old adding machines. Why? Because
they still work and are always at hand. You don't have to open an app
with 'features', you just do quick math. (and yes, some companies still
manufacture them today!)

I liked them so much and was so used to them, and fast on them, I
managed to find a Java applet that implemented one on the desktop for
times when I didn't have an adding machine. It could even 'run a tape'
that you could 'cut' and save (and print!) if need be.

And those machines are why I'm also partial to full keyboards with a
number pad. I can't abide having to type numbers repetitively from the
top row.

Adrien

I have got to believe “automatic decimal” is emulating that behaviour. And no
wonder nobody has that setting on anymore.

I don't know of a way to do this, but I give the accounts different names;
using your situation above, I call the brokerage account that holds S 500
Index shares "BRK-S 500", and the IRA entry would be "IRA-S". I
don't know if this helps on the account page or not. I never really use the
account page in that way. A Roth fund with S 500 shares would be

As far as I know, there's no way to advance from one account containing
"500" to another account containing "500". However, if you type
additional characters in the name of the account you're trying to get
to, the highlight will move to that account. In other words, as I
understand it the account name matching is recalculated from the
beginning each time you type another character.

To me it seems the least surprising way for auto-decimal to work would be if it
only applied when you enter an amount directly. I wouldn't expect it to apply
to the result of a calculation. (Issues like this is why I don't use
auto-decimal. I don't like decimals appearing where I didn't put them.)

I wouldn't be in favor of a blinking tab. And if it were implemented,
I'd for sure want to turn it off. But there might be some other
effective method.

Other than what was described in the bug report about directing you back
to the uncommitted transaction explicitly, I can't see a path to guard
against a non-graceful shutdown. (aka 'crash')

2023-12-01 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Indeed, I'm not sure how it worked for me earlier, but it is failing for
each type of operand.

It seems the code for auto-decimal is occurring with each numerical
entry, rather than the final result.

I'd call that a bug.

Adrien

That figures.

Arguably it's correct. With "automatic decimal" active, the first of
those means "0.01/0.03" and the second means "1/0.03"

Just that people don;t expect that ...

Can confirm that GnuCash is performing the calculation as the OP originally
described in 5.4 on Linux MInt with the 'automatic decimal point "setting
checked. It isn't something I normally have set

Re: [GNC] Enhancement suggestion

2023-12-01 Thread David G. Pickett via gnucash-user
I had sql once but you moved me to xml.  Is there an easy way to go back to
SQL?

sql saves uncommitted transactions?

It seems simple enough to have attributes in XML to hold the uncommitted
information beside the original information, so you can always save the entire
state of the application.

But even without that, having a strong indication on the tab that has pending
changes would be much more ergonomic and prevent data loss.

I'm assuming you are using XML. In that case the "Save" button does appear
from being greyed out and you are indicated on close. Of course this is global
and not individual indications that you would like.
The SQL database will save as you go.
I'm in the other camp where I *don't* want to auto-save. This has saved me
numerous times where I make a big mistake and it's a simple close without
saving and reopening which is a littler easier and quicker than opening a
previous backup and renaming files.

I can readily replicate it on my copy of 2.6.21:

1. Check the "automatic decimal point" setting (with 2dp)
