Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
David, I would be happy with just changed amounts. Phone bills, cable bills, subscriptions all adjust upward in random ways at random times due to the designed in inflation of our economy, plus newly invented or rescinded taxes and fees. Wrong first take -- I cannot imagine being able to predict stock splits! :D The scheduled transaction screen code has the old and new values, so it is in a great position to update the already scheduled transactions. You mean split or 3+way transactions! While mine are generally just simple a-b transactions, there is no reason it could not work for 3 or more way transactions, like if someone is tracking taxes on their cable bill for itemization -- just ask, if yes, find the future txns that match the old template txn, delete each, enter new template txn for same date! While having my future bill and deposit txns in place does send the account listed value up and down a lot, it is nice to see what upcoming expenses I need to keep money in place for, moving excess out and moving savings in as needed. Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
The OP referenced an adjustment for inflation, so it seems like simply upping various amounts. Hence my suggestion to leave the template with the current amounts, and add a variable multiplier which will be prompted by GnuCash. But that suggestion didn't take into account creating transactions in advance, and only contemplated creating them when they would naturally occur. (you won't know the inflation multiplier in advance) - While I don't create transactions far in advance, I like your idea of noting an effective date. I have one transaction that changes every 6 months, so this will help me see the iteration a of particular transaction. - The export/import idea is likely the best way to handle more than a handful of transactions that need updating. Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
David, Are these still just scheduled or are they created and in the registers, but simply dated in the future? If they are still scheduled but not created, then changing the template will alter them when they do fire. If they are already created, there is no solution but individual manual entry, and as I noted in my other reply, I can't imagine that being implemented, but you can certainly ask. The proper place to do so is file it on the GnuCash Bugzilla site with the prefix "RFE:" in the title. Regards, Adrien On 1/17/24 4:56 PM, David G. Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
You can't. They are already created. The solution is don't create them in advance. Otherwise, you are left with the tedium of manually editing each one individually. I doubt the result of an SX has any link or record at all that it was created that way, much less has any tie to the template once created. And I don't see how this usage of future transactions is anything other than related to budgeting. Forecasting is part of budgeting, and future transactions are forecasting. Of course, you don't have to take the next official literal step and budget an amount for those future periods, but that is just a formality. I understood the OP referenced already created future transactions. No matter what, those have to be manually and individually edited because they were already created. I don't think it is matter of how many SXs you have for how many transactions but is more like if there are already scheduled transaction fired from a given SX, and then you update the template for that SX, how do you back-fill all auto added transactions from that fired SX. Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
I honk he’s talking about having 1 template but the transactions have already been created 12 months in advance. I.e. he wants to update the created tens based on an updated template after the fact. Re: [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
You can use variables, thus if you alter your templates to use an inflation multiplier, you future proof the template. GnuCash will prompt you for that variable value each time the SX fires. Simply enter your new multiplier as desired. Regards, Adrien On 1/16/24 5:18 PM, David G. Instead of having 11 or 12 sx templates, why not have one that fires monthly? Sent from Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Original message From: "David G. [GNC] Enhancement: Future sched txn update if updated template.
I schedule my periodic transactions a year in advance, but with constant inflation, often the amount goes up. It'd be nice to have a way to, by interactive option after I update the template, have gnucash update the already generated future transactions to match an updated template transaction, so I do not need to update 11 or 12 more places. ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies.
