There is also a menu item in GnuCash under Transaction that allows one to
cut and paste it; I've used that to move transactions to the proper account.

Re: [GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

2023-01-20 Thread Kalpesh Patel
Since there are more than two ways suggested, I was highlighting the pitfall
-- if delete route was used instead of simply changing its parent -- that it
does not delete all transactions that are present in the latter account before
reassigning the transactions from the former account to latter one.
Re-parenting is the preferred method.

I would say that you might be able to tell if the account was empty or not
afterwards is to retain the GNC log file that gets created that would capture
that event or you put some sort of marker in the account that it was empty
would be two ways I think it can be accomplished if it was necessary. But that
is not a strait forward built-in functionality that I believe you are
referring to.

Uh if your intent is to MOVE an account to a? different place in
the CoA, simply change its parent. Same if you want a different name for
the account, just rename it. In either of those situations, you are not
intending to alter any transactions, so why touch them.

Yes, delete will work IF the destination account is empty. But moving by
delete is a MERGE operation (merge the transactions in the account being
deleted with the transactions already in the destination account.
However, how would you demonstrate afterword's that it had been empty?

2023-01-19 Thread Phyllis Bruce
Sorry, trying again (and I have NOT been drinking...)

Highlight your top level Credit Card. Now, go to the top of the screen and
choose "Edit". You will get a pop up where you can enter Liabilities as
the Parent account for Credit Card. Done.

Assuming you have the Liabilities and Credit Cards accounts created, it's
simple. From the Chart of Accounts page, select the account you want to move
(e.g., Visa) click the edit button, locate the Parent Account, change it to
Liabilities:Credit Cards, and click Save.

Done.

Assuming you have the Liabilities and Credit Cards accounts created, it's
simple.  From the Chart of Accounts page, select the account you want to move
(e.g., Visa) click the edit button, locate the Parent Account, change it to
Liabilities:Credit Cards, and click Save.

Done.

Thanks.
Your advice makes sense.
Since I have already created my credit card accounts as top-level accounts and
they have about a month's worth of data, is it possible to move them to another
account?
Example: move VISA to LIABILITIES > CREDIT CARDS > VISA

Xe Roy,

Just a note that it's more common to structure your GnuCash accounts with just
five top level accounts:

Assets
Liabilities
Equity
Income
Expenses

You'd put the "Credit Cards" account under Liabilities, with each credit card
in its own account within Credit Cards, like so:

Liabilities
- Credit Cards
- - Visa
- - Mastercard

This groups the accounts in ways that make reporting clearer and easier.

I'll have several accounts open and I just forget to switch.
In Quicken, I just move the transaction (splits and all) to the new

The Internet chatter I've found so far lead me to believe this feature is
 missing from gnucash.
I hope that's not true because it would really cause me excessive hassle.
I hope there is a way to move a transaction (including any splits) to

Here is an example which illustrates a typical situation:
Let's say I have two credit cards, VISA and MASTER CARD.
Each has their own top-level CREDIT CARD account in gnucash, and each has
 its own tab in gnucash.
I meant to enter a transaction in VISA but accidently entered it in MASTER
 CARD.
The transaction is for $10 with WALMART in the description.
So, the main entry shows $10 and the splits show $5 to the clothing
account and $5 to the food account.
I want to move the entire WALMART transaction, including the splits, from
the MASTER CARD top-level account to the VISA top-level account in one easy
 step.
This is easily doable in Quicken by right-clicking anywhere in the
transaction, clicking MOVE, and selecting the new account VISA.
How is this done in gnucash?

Re: [GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

2023-01-18 Thread Kalpesh Patel
Xe Roy-

>From what I can tell is that you want is to move the transaction (from a
Quicken perspective) from one account to another. In GnuCash, where a
transaction shows up in a top-level account is decided by how that transaction
is comprised or broken up into its components which auto-magically displays on
the top-level account. Quicken is not a double entry system while GnuCash is
so what that means is that a basic transaction in GnuCash will be broken up
and have at least two, for lack of better word for Quicken, sub-components. In
Quicken for example you have a Credit Card 1 account in which you post a
transaction, say you buy groceries worth $10. In Quicken that transaction will
be in Credit Card 1 account with category of perhaps Grocery. In GnuCash this
same transaction will show up in two places as there are no Quicken categories
equivalent in GnuCash -- just accounts in GnuCash -- thus the Credit Card 1
account and in the account named Grocery. Because transaction has two
components which others have referred to here as a "split" -- the GnuCash
"split" which is not same as the Quicken version of "split" -- updating one or
the other component will move that transaction into proper account.

So if you made a mistake and posted a transaction into Visa account instead of
Master Card, open up that transaction in Visa account, and expand the
transaction into its sub-components. One of the sub-components will point back
to the account you are in, Visa. If you now update that to point to Master
Card, that transaction will auto-magically disappear from Visa account and
appear in Master Card account -- equivalent of Quicken "move".

With this background hope you can make some sense in difference between
Quicken and GnuCash. Think of it this way: Quicken "categories" are nothing
more than account that are hidden in Quicken but visible in GnuCash.

In addition to what Michael said, if you have multiple splits, you
might want to view the splits and change it there. Here's a quick
video showing this: https://youtu.be/k3wS2lmR5VQ

Re: [GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

2023-01-18 Thread Fross, Michael
When I notice I've placed a transaction in the wrong spot, I "jump" to the
matching transaction and correct the credit card. For example:

I put my Walmart grocery into the CreditCard1 account instead of the
CreditCard2 account. I noticed this in the CreditCard1 account.

1. "Jump" to the matching transaction. So now I am in the Grocery account.
2. Change that transaction to be CreditCard2 instead of the incorrect
CreditCard1 account.
3. Press enter.

The transaction in Grocery is fine, but you'll find it's gone from
CreditCard1 and now resides in CreditCard2. The "Jump" command is your
friend.

[GNC] How to move a transaction with splits from one top-level account to another - take 2

2023-01-18 Thread Xe Roy
I asked this question earlier but initial responses made me realize more detail
was necessary.

I am a newby to gnucash ... trying to switch from Quicken to gnucash.
A mistake I regularly make is to enter a transaction into the wrong account.
I'll have several accounts open and I just forget to switch.
In Quicken, I just move the transaction (splits and all) to the new account.
The Internet chatter I've found so far lead me to believe this feature is
missing from gnucash.
I hope that's not true because it would really cause me excessive hassle.
I hope there is a way to move a transaction (including any splits) to another
account.

Here is an example which illustrates a typical situation:
Let's say I have two credit cards, VISA and MASTER CARD.
Each has their own top-level CREDIT CARD account in gnucash, and each has its
own tab in gnucash.
I meant to enter a transaction in VISA but accidently entered it in MASTER CARD.
The transaction is for $10 with WALMART in the description.
So, the main entry shows $10 and the splits show $5 to the clothing account and
$5 to the food account.
I want to move the entire WALMART transaction, including the splits, from the
MASTER CARD top-level account to the VISA top-level account in one easy step.
This is easily doable in Quicken by right-clicking anywhere in the transaction,
clicking MOVE, and selecting the new account VISA.
How is this done in gnucash?
