Re: [GNC] Navigation through chart of accounts: shortcuts or bookmarks?
Sam is suggesting what I was going to do, but this idea might not be intuitive. So let me make it clearer (and these tricks are more general in application than just gnucash) YOU (and not how a name is normally spelled) are the master. Just because all of these funds are "500" doesn't mean YOU have to name the accounts that way. You could have 500A, 500B, 500C, etc. You could have 501, 502, 503, etc. Michael D Novack As far as I know, there's no way to advance from one account containing "500" to another account containing "500". However, if you type additional characters in the name of the account you're trying to get to, the highlight will move to that account. In other words, as I understand it the account name matching is recalculated from the beginning each time you type another character. ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: [GNC] Navigation through chart of accounts: shortcuts or bookmarks?
I'll add that the workflow for Find Account is: 1. CTRL/CMD-I, which brings up the Find Account dialog 2. start typing your search text, in this case "500" (without the quotes) and hit ENTER to search 3. the result is a list of matching accounts. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight the desired account. 4. hit Enter to jump to the account in the Accounts tab 5. hit SPACE to open that register That sounds like a lot more clicks, but: * you get a narrowed down list to choose from * you can jump to the account and open its register with two very fast keystrokes after the search * you can do this even without viewing the Accounts tab. (e.g., while viewing another register) The drawback to searching from the Accounts tab using the OP's quick-type method, is that *only* shows you accounts that are already visible - that is - expanded on the page. If that part of the tree is collapsed, the method the OP describes will not find the account. It is a 'visible text search' feature only and has no cognizance of 'accounts', where the Find Account feature does. It isn't as far as I know a feature of GnuCash, but something from GTK that came along for the ride. I've never numbered my accounts. This seems like a useful workaround for me. I'll try it. Thanks! I have assigned account numbers to the commonly used accounts so I can sort by number and find the one I want quickly. [GNC] Navigation through chart of accounts: shortcuts or bookmarks?
I have a pretty large number of accounts, and there is name duplication. For example, I might have a S 500 index fund in my brokerage account and another one in a traditional IRA and maybe yet another one in a trust account. My usual strategy is to open up the Accounts tab and type <500>. That brings me to the first account with "500" in its name. As far as I know, however, there is no magic way to advance to the NEXT account with "500" in its name. Is there a way to do that? Or are there a better ways (tips and tricks?) to quickly and efficiently access an account that might be at the bottom of the list?
