I can confirm the problem is still occurring in GNUCash v3.0 on Windows 10

Let's rather say "a linux program ported to Windows using a toolkit that's
been obsolete and unmaintained for a number of years".

Anyway, I don't expect any of the current developers to spend effort on trying
to get this resorted in the 2.6 series. This is mainly due to time restratines
and the 3.0 release being around the corner.

Now if the 3.0 release has the same issue, that would be a more likely get our

try what happens when doing the same with the most recent gnucash 2.7.5

If GnuCash uses a different method than all other programs, that would make
this the only program that could not pipe output to a printer in the 21st

2018-03-02 Thread David Carlson
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, there was a period of time starting
in January when my Ubuntu 16.04 computer was also unable to print to a
network printer due to some subtle permissions issue, but now it fixed
itself after further updates. I have had another 'Out of Memory" error in
Windows 7, which has crashed GnuCash more than once in the last couple of
weeks. Windows is not the only OS that has issues from time to time.
Apple has recently had issues as well.

Not long ago my home gateway died and I spent 2 days using my cellphone as
a wi-fi hotspot while waiting for AT technician to replace it. Ain't
technology great!

Just to check, I looked on my laptop which has windoze 10 home with

Both computers are running 64 bit versions of windoze, one pro the other

I have rebooted the computer, unistalled 2.6.19 and reinstalled from a

Suggestions (besides dumping windoze, I am down to two legacy apps, then

Re: Printing no longer works on Windows 10 Pro

2018-02-22 Thread David Carlson
My Windows 7 computer has now become inconsistent in the specific failure.
This morning I tried the check printing module again and printing a report
and somewhere in the sequence I got a "not enough memory" error and GnuCash
crashed. This machine has 24 Gig of RAM and 296 Gig free on the C drive.
Skip the next paragraph to read my conclusions.

After restarting GnuCash 2.6.18 working on a file on my local C drive when
I try printing I get the dialog to select a printer, I notice that it is
pointing to my favorite LAN printer, press print and the dialog box
disappears, but nothing goes to the printer.Looking at the printer
queue I now see four 15 meg 2 page documents from Gnucash sitting there
growing grass or whatever documents do when they do not come out to the
print tray. I discover that the paper tray is empty. Oops! I pause the
documents in the Queue and reload the paper tray. Page 1 of 6 of a 2 day
old document comes out. The rest of that document seems to have gone to
the bit bucket in the sky. Now I try resuming one of the reports from
GnuCash and it appears in the printer output tray. Similarly, a 1 page
test document from Libre Calc comes out and it is identical to the one that
was stuck in the printer memory from yesterday.

I see that GnuCash does have a different interface to the system printers
than most other programs. My current hypothesis is that interface somehow
choked when the printer 'went offline' because it was out of paper and when
it crashed it took GnuCash with it. After restarting GnuCash the printing
interface was able to route jobs correctly to the system queue for the
selected printer. Since I am currently unable to reproduce the out of
memory error or program crash so far, that is just a hypothesis, but the
developers may be able to suggest a better test. This could still be
related to recent Windows updates because some recent hardening seems to be
fiddling with permissions to work with printers.

I have had a different computer with Ubuntu 16.04 suddenly become unable to
print due to an obscure permissions issue to that same LAN printer after an
update, and I still have not been able to fix it.

Re: Printing no longer works on Windows 10 Pro

2018-02-21 Thread Greg Feneis
As a work around, perhaps try the Export as PDF function, then print the
exported PDF from a PDF viewer?

Kind regards,

Re: Printing no longer works on Windows 10 Pro

2018-02-21 Thread David Carlson
I wonder if this is the result of a recent Windows update. I rarely print
from GnuCash but after reading your message I tried to print from release
2.6.18 in Windows 7 and I get "An error occurred during this operation." I
have 5 different printers set up on this computer and Libre Calc has no
trouble selecting one of them and printing to it.

Printing no longer works on Windows 10 Pro

2018-02-21 Thread jeffrey black
Does anyone have any idea of why version 2.6.19 of GnuCash will no
longer recognize any physical printer hooked to my Windows 10 Pro
computer?  All other windoze programs do, and until today I have been
able to print any GnuCash report on this computer. Split lines and all.
I needed a quick and dirty one page report so didn't do the html export
print or I would not have noticed. It has worked before, I use it to
print tax reports for each month of the year.

Just to check, I looked on my laptop which has windoze 10 home with
GnuCash 2.6.19, and it recognizes and prints to all of my printers.

Both computers are running 64 bit versions of windoze, one pro the other
home, and I am using the same data file on both computers (moved the
portable usb drive).

I have rebooted the computer, unistalled 2.6.19 and reinstalled from a
new download.

Suggestions (besides dumping windoze, I am down to two legacy apps, then
Hallelujah Unix here I come) ?
