Here is the Gnupg site for Gnupg downloads.

The Linux links are listed below the ones for Windows and Mac.

Once gnupg 2.2.33 is installed on your Linux system, you can download
Kleopatra as an easy gui front end.

If you do not especially need the Linux version you are using, I
would highly recommend the Ubuntu 20.x LTS (long term support). It

Which Linux distro are you using? The simplest way would be to install
it from the repositories. For example on Debian or a Debian-based
distro: "apt install gpg". There is a great chance that it is already
installed on your system.

If you want a more recent version of GnuPG you could build it on your
own, but that is not necessary, if you don't need the latest features ;-)

I'd have a look for a GnuPG plug-in for your email client. It's not
clear which one you are using.

I'm using Claws Mail right now, PGP/MIME can be enabled by enabling it
in the plug-ins dialogue. Others like Trojitá, there are similar
options for enabling and configuring GnuPG support.

For Mozilla Thunderbird, it has its own OpenPGP implementation
built-in, but if you wish, you can (at the moment) tell it to use
GnuPG. An example use case where you might want to do this is if your
OpenPGP keys are stored on a hardware token (Thunderbird's built-in
OpenPGP support doesn't support these tokens yet).

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:OpenPGP:Smartcards says "Use the
Thunderbird config editor (found at the bottom of preferences/options),
and search for mail.openpgp.allow_external_gnupg. Switch the value to
true."

Web-based clients: you'll need to look at some sort of browser
extension to enable this feature.

For just file and message encryption outside of emails, there are
various front-ends for GnuPG if you must use a GUI tool, for example
KDE ships Kleopatra.

This is an Icedove and/or Xandros error. It is not an Enigmail error.
For that reason, we're not able to help you out very much with it. We
wish you luck with the reinstallation. A lot of people report excellent
success installing plain-vanilla Ubuntu on netbooks; it might be worth a
shot as opposed to the highly customized Xandros you're currently running

I can bear testimony to running Ubuntu 8.10-64bits under VMware
Fusion, on an Apple MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo.
 .
and what about gnupg itself? i saw in the synaptic that it's already
installed. can it be used with thunderbird? how to use it on linux?

The original distro (downloaded disk image) came with gpg 1.4.7 or 1.4.8
(I can't remember) which I updated to 1.4.9 by compiling the source
code. I also compiled gpg 2.0.10rc1 and later 2.0.10 (with gpg-agent and
pinentry). All run fine.

GnuPG, whether gpg or gpg2 interacts very well with
Thunderbird+Enigmail, thanks to the work of the Enigmail team. I have
found that it is easier to install Thunderbird using Ubuntuzilla
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Internet/HTTP-WWW-/Ubuntuzilla-30545.shtml,
but it's all a matter of user's choice.

We recommend reading the Enigmail Quick Start Guide.

Definitely.

Well, I have big problems trying to use ubuntu (maybe because I have
never taken the time to start learning how to use it), but gpg4win is
GnuPG compiled to run on windows. So gnupg on linux, depending on what
version of gnupg it installed, should be exactly the same thing than
gpg4win, except that it has been compiled for linux instead of windows.

GnuPG comes in 2 flavours, there can be some differences. GPG1 is...
well, the traditional version, while GPG2 includes GPG1, plus GPG2 and
some tools. AFAIK, gpg4win implements GPG2, but you can ask the
installer to install just gpg1 (and to don't install gpg2.exe and the
tools).
In any event, your linux should have at least gpg1, so probably
enigmail can use it (I don't know if there is a minimal version
required). I use GnuPG 1.4.9 on windows, and it works fine. On Ubuntu
8.10, I have GnuPG 1.4.6 (installed by default) and works perfectly with
Thunderbird and Enigmail.

enigmail and gnupg on linux xandros

2009-02-08 Thread Condor Kim
i have a question about using enigmail on linux.

i recently bought an eee pc 901 with linux xandros on it. i added debian repo
and i wanted to install enigmail on my thunderbird. but when i do a search on
my synaptic i get a response that i need to install icedove together with
enigmail. i looked up icedove and learned that it's something very similar to
thunderbird. i don't know if the thunderbird on my eeepc is in fact the same as
icedove, and so i went ahead to install icedove and enigmail on my eeepc. but
then i got the errors:

e:icedove: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
e: enigmail: dependency problem -- leaving unconfigured
e: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure - a' to
correct the problem

and then my eeepc crashed that night and i have to reinstall the OS

can anyone tell me what's going on? and how do i install enigmail on linux
xandros with thunderbird? is icedove the same as the thunderbird that came with
eeepc 901?

and what about gnupg itself? i saw in the synaptic that it's already installed.
can it be used with thunderbird? how to use it on linux? is there a site that
gives instruction? is there something on linux similar to gpg4win?

thanks so much

GnuPG in Linux

2007-10-30 Thread Charly Avital
Hi,

In the pursuit of complicating my life with some fun, I have installed
Linux Ubuntu 7.04 under Parallels 3.0 Mac build 5160 (in addition to
Windows XP Pro). The current release of Ubuntu, 7.10 is not [yet]
digested by Parallels, but eventually it will.

Ubuntu 7.04 distribution came with GnuPG 1.4.6 already installed.
After much searching and installing I finally got:
- compiled 1.4.7 from source after installing 'build-essential', because
the C compiler that came with that Ubuntu release was not suitable, by
itself, to compile gnupg.
- installed GPA and KGpg
- imported my keyrings from gnupg/MacOS 10.4.10 (Leopard is still
wandering in the jungle on its to my home), and reset the trust.

My question, please help: where, how can I find and open, actually open
and edit as required, gpg.conf? A ls search in .gnupg lists 'options'. I
remember that gnupg.options was the ancestor of gpg.conf (probably
before gnupg 1.2.*).

Sorry if the question seems [is] silly, but I have a block. I have tried
to use pico (nano), but I don't seem to strike the right commands.

Thanks!

Dunno what that's doing there. You're right, it should be gpg.conf.

The good news is most of your OS X Terminal.app skills will apply here.
OS X 10.4 and 10.5 both use a program called 'bash' to provide a
command line. So does Ubuntu. Prior to 10.4, OS X used tcsh instead of
bash; if you're more comfortable with 10.0-10.3 behavior, talk to me
off-list and we can get Ubuntu set up with tcsh.

I'd suggest doing 'gedit ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf ' and just editing it that
way. Gedit is the standard GNOME editor and should be much friendlier
than using nano.

You have to create the file yourself and place it in ~/.gnupg.
Robert suggested gedit, but if you have KDE (you mentioned that you
installed kgpg), you can use Kate or KWrite (personally, I like Kate
because KDE is pretty and GNOME is ugly IMO), but any of these (or a
terminal-based editor if you want, or really, pretty much any text
editor at all) will work.

Just rename (mv) options to gpg.conf. Even that isn't strictly
necessary AFAIK, as gpg will read the options file if no gpg.conf is
