Apologies if I posted this earlier.
Am trying to hunt down this rarely seen summer berry...called
bend-shem. This picture was taken last year and I cannot remember
 where I found these berries.

 Thank you.

The picture is of a wild fruit, what we may call 'vovLam'.  These are not
shrub berries; rather the vovlam tree grows to a height.

BeNsam are of two varieties, purple and white when ripe, these beNsam are
juicy berries. (Like smaller varieties of Zamblam). Bensam shrubs, if
allowed, grow into midsized trees.  Varieties of cute little birds flock on
these to devourer these Bensams during rainy season and children also
relish them.  White varietiy are generally not consumed by humans.

There used to be several types of berries and as wilderness withered, many
spices may have become extinct or rare.

What about Dabolim Airport?

MOPA TAKES WINGS

April 24, 2012

TEAM HERALD

teamher...@herald-goa.com

PANJIM: The process to set up a green field international airport in Mopa
which moved at a snail space during last ten years finally got some boost on
Monday with the State Government accepting in principle the master plan
prepared by the Consultant M/s Amman and Whitney.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told media that global tenders for Mopa
airport would be floated by September-end and it is likely to be operational
by 2015.

He said 80 per cent of land for the project has been acquired and remaining
would be acquired in the next few days.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 4000 crore and it will be completed
in four phases. The project will also be based on Public Private Partnership
and will not incur any financial burden on the Government.

Land acquisition for Mopa airport was initiated during the BJP regime in
2002. However, the project was derailed when Congress-led Government came to
power in 2005. The former PWD minister Churchill Alemao had vehemently
opposed the project as also some locals had moved the Court stating they
would lose their only means of livelihood -- agricultural land.

Consequently, the land acquisition process lapsed and was reinitiated only
after the Government announced that Dabolim airport would not be closed even
after Mopa became operational.

Of the total land requirement of 2100 acres, the Government has acquired
about 1860 acres -- of which 50 acres is transferred by the Government from
its own holdings. The land acquisition process has, however, been stuck in
Chandel, Varkhand and Casarvarnem as locals have moved the court.

Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar who represents Mandrem, was however,
optimistic and said all who have surrendered land would be given higher
compensation.

The master plan prepared by the consultant was presented before the Mopa
Airport Steering Committee which met today.

Best Regards,

Mario F. D' Costa

Usha Uthup (Iyer) is that rare individual in the music world who stands out
for the way she dresses, carries herself and being evergreen in an industry
where life can be cruelly short. She stands out always dressed
in kanjeevaram sarees, one hand covered in colourful bangles, a large bindi
on the forehead, a strong and powerful voice and a stage presence which
make the audience identify with her.She can vibe with any sex or age group
and can sing in a number of languages. I believe she has sung some konkani
songs too, though which ones they are do not come to mind. She was very
popular in the Bombay and Poona music scene before she settled down in
 Calcutta.

I believe Usha Uthup studied at St Agnes HS in Byculla. She once visited St
Anne's HS in Poona where she sang Jumbalaya and a few other songs. St
Anne's and St Agnes HS were run by the same congregation viz CJM sisters.

[Goanet] Reason under fire in India

2012-04-24 Thread Santosh Helekar
Some time ago I had pointed out that the so-called Catholic-Christian Secular
Forum (CSF) based in Mumbai is not a secular forum at all, but that it is a
medieval religious chauvinistic organization similar to the Hindu Janajagruti
Samiti because of its strident campaigns and threats against literary freedom
in fictional works of art such as Da Vinci Code, and its relentless
engagement in sectarian religious propaganda through hyperbolic websites such
as http://www.persecutedchurch.org/

Now it turns out that this organization and other similar outfits are
persecuting an Indian rationalist named Sanal Edamaruku for exposing a fake
miracle in Mumbai, and for pointing out the obvious fact that such miracles
tend to be the ultimate scams (inclusive of the money raising kind) being
perpetrated on poor devout folk. The CSF and other similar organizations have
filed multiple criminal complaints and issued threats of dire consequences
against the outspoken Edamaruku, and have launched a nationwide hate campaign
against him through mass emails and other means. I was forwarded one such email
from the general secretary of The CSF.

Here is a news report regarding this hounding effort:

http://www.mid-day.com/news/2012/apr/150412-mumbai-Christian-forums-file-FIRS-after-IRA-chief-calls-miracle-water-a-scam.htm

The report also thankfully indicates that fortunately for the sake of Indian
secularism there may be some level-headed officers in the police force in India
who see through this charade for what it is.

Here is an opinion editorial regarding this in Wired Magazine by the noted
American rationalist James Randi:

[Goanet] The Case Against Mopa

2012-04-24 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

When the facts change, I change my mind.  What do you do, sir? - John Maynard
Keynes

In a recent post I admonished folks for their impatience with Manohar Parrikar
and asked that he be given time before rushing to judgement.  That was last
week.
The facts concerning Goa have changed this week, and I have changed my mind.

In the same post, I had written about my one-on-one meeting with Manohar
Parrikar
in February, a couple of weeks before the election.  We had agreed on every
issue
that I put before him except one: Mopa.  I expressed my opposition to the
proposed
Mopa airport in no uncertain terms and briefly laid out my case.  He was
unmoved
and equally upfront about it.  He said he wanted Mopa to go ahead should he be
voted to power.  I pleaded that at the very least he should defer its
consideration
until he had first resolved the other sicknesses afflicting Goa.

Now we read that Mopa is being pushed through at warp speed, whereas the
issues of mining, land conversion, construction, and migrant influx don't seem
to
have received the priority or attention.  We already saw how casinos got a sly
nod.

Is this why we (moi and some friends) were excited about Manohar's return
to power?  That he would take off from where the criminal Congress syndicate
before him had left off?  That he would try to out-Digu Digu?

I am afraid that we are headed for more of the same.  Shame on you, Manohar-bab.
And shame on me, for believing in you.

Our expectation was that given what Goa has been though the past 10-12 years,
ravaged by indiscriminate construction everywhere (much of it illegal, later
'regularized'
through bribes), Manohar would have the foresight to not only arrest the madness
but roll it back.  We thought that Manohar's idea of 'development' would be a
radical departure - that it will not involve land and concrete.  Instead, he
has
just handed the real estate construction lobby its ultimate bonanza yet -
Mopa.

This is not your run-of-the-mill mega project.  This is the MOTHER OF
ALL MEGA PROJECTS.  Projects of this scale ought to be carefully deliberated,
its pros and cons clearly understood.  Shouldn't  Manohar have put the plan
up in the public domain for scrutiny and sought counter-opinions?

What is the rush, especially given its magnitude?  Here in California, there is
a mega project in play right now - a bullet train from San Francisco to
Los Angeles.  It was put on the ballot for the citizens to vote on, and
it has gone through numerous iterations and revisions (and ultimately scaled
down).  When the Americans, masters of infrastructure and planning, proceed
with such caution on large public projects, I wonder where Indians, champions
of monumental screw-ups, get their confidence from.

The case again Mopa is obvious: it will kill Goa as we know it.

1) One Airport Too Many

We already have an airport at Dabolim, one that is roughly equidistant
from Goa's northernmost and southernmost points.  The Indian Navy has usurped
it just like it has other prime Goan land.  Goa has scarce land resources.
It makes no sense whatsoever to build a second airport.  This alone should
settle it.  Let the Navy move to Karwar or wherever.  For decades the Navy
has used the excuse of 'national defence' to muscle in and grab Goa's
land (and simultaneously silence its critics).  We ought to have called
their bluff.

2) The 'Jobs for Goans' Carrot

We are told it will create jobs for Goans, especially the poor people of
Pernem and surrounds.  Hogwash.  The chief beneficiaries of this project
will be politicians who stand to make a killing, and I have no doubt that
the spoils will be shared between both BJP and Congress politicos, local
and from Delhi.  Sharad Pawar's cronies have bought huge tracts of land
in the area and stand to benefit enormously from the secondary and
tertiary 'development' that will accrue from Mopa.

A spend of Rs 2500 crores to create employment opportunities for
Pednekars and Goans?  Is Manohar out of his mind?

Goans were sold a similar fraudulent bill of goods in the 1980s and told
that tourism would be their salvation.  Today you cannot order a
fish curry plate in Konkani at restaurants along the coast.  All the
tourist establishments are infested with non-Goans.  Thanks to the
muddle-headed tourism policy, what we got instead were ghatis shitting
on our beaches, and Indian boors trashing them.

Then again, walk around in any industrial estate.  They are chock-full
of ghati labour and non-Goans.  Effectively Goans have instituted a
jobs scheme for Bihar, Andhra, UP, Jharkhand, Orissa, W Bengal - you
get the idea.

Mopa will create jobs yes, but overwhelmingly for outsiders.  This jobs
promise is a pinch of coonshit.

3) Have Concrete, Will Pour

The end result of Mopa will be to turn everything north of the
Mandovi bridge into a concrete wasteland.  Let me provide a visual aid:
think of the hideously ugly stretch as you drive through
