Re: [Goanet] North Goans marrying South Goans

The sociologist Dr W.R. da Silva wrdsi...@gmail.com puts it well when he
recently comments (on Goa Research Net) to say:

QUOTE Territorial divide is a false reference to marriage
regions. The
marriage territory is caste, zat and not territory. as geography.
For Christians too the zat is the unit of endogamy. There is no
exogamy in Goa except of recent origin where individuals marry
across zat, samurt and region.William ENDQUOTE

I have long been surprised how caste continues to influence marriage
choices, with there even being pairs of villages which traditionally
inter-marry with each other! Scratch a bit deeper, and one will find caste
the basis of this.

Leave aside Hindu society, where caste is (mostly) an acknowledged reality.
This is true of both 'Bamon' and 'Chardo' Catholic couples, and I presume
it applies to other castes as well. However much we might like to pretend
it doesn't exist (or shouldn't), the fact is, it does!

Agreed that in recent times, with the intermingling across the genders
happening more regularly, it's quite possible to see counter-trends too.

Very occasionally, geography does overlap with caste. That's the beauty
of the caste system, you can always feel superior to someone else, lower in
the pecking order. Even those supposedly at the 'top' have their own
politics! My understanding is that a Bamon from Salcete would look down on
a Bamon from Bardez! So much for superiority :-)

But here, again, the factor is caste, and geography is perhaps only
incidental. FN

PS: In the caste debate, what is also intriguing is the way in which we
point to others as being 'casteist' and ourselves as above it all :-)

On 6 October 2014 19:52, Cecil Pinto cecilpi...@gmail.com wrote:

If you use the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as demarcators Goa can be divided
into North, Mid and South territories. Now I notice besides marrying in
their own territory most Goan Catholics will marry only into an adjoining
territory. A South or North Goan will marry a Mid-Goan and vice versa. But
rarely does a South Goan marry a North Goan. On the rare occurrence of
 such
a union it provides a perfect balance in the relationship and the progeny
have a truly pan-Goan attitude. This is a theory I am trying to formulate
and would like examples proving or disproving it.

[Goanet] 1-Day Recollection for T.T. Members

2014-10-09 Thread ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE COMMERCE-MAPUSA-GOA-INDIA-403507 (Tel:0832-2262356; WEB:www.xavierscollege-goa.com)

1-Day Recollection for T.T. Members

The members of the Teachers’ Teams (T.T.), Goa
Region, spent a day in prayer, and reflection on
the apostolic exhortation, “The Joy of the
Gospel”, of Pope Francis, on 6 October, 2014, in
the Chapel of Our Lady of Miracles, situated on the hillock of Curtorim Parish.

The reflection made the members aware of their
missionary responsibility and call to proclaim
joyfully the message of love and forgiveness in
order to bring about a transformation of personal
lives. “The Joy of the Gospel”, says Pope
Francis, “fills the hearts and lives of all who
encounter Jesus”. He admonishes us to rejoice,
and rejoice always lest we turn to be “Christians
whose lives seem like Lent without
Easter”. Further, Pope Francis motivates us to
reach out to others, seek those gone astray,
stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast.

The T.T. members took part in the Eucharistic
Celebration based on the theme, “Go and do
likewise”, words of Jesus addressed to the
lawyer. To love others, particularly the
enemies, is the essence of Jesus’ message.

The members prayed the rosary and offered it for
the intentions of the Pope, mainly, for the
success of the extraordinary Synod of Bishops, currently taking place in Rome.

At the hillock the members experienced serenity
and tranquility of mind and heart, and thus, the
ambience led them to a greater relationship with
nature and God. The members thanked profusely
the Parish Priest, Fr. Mariano Goes e Proença and
his collaborators for the minute arrangements
towards the success of T.T. programme. May
everyone respond generously to the call of the Master.

[Goanet] JOHN STATEMENT IS UNBELIEVABLE?

2014-10-09 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear Editor
Times of India

Your news items titled Parrikar colluded with corrupt Congressmen to oust
me, says John which should have been just opposite . In fact Parrikar
colluded with John to oust Congressmen because this way Parrikar gained
clear entry to get his roots stronger in BJP. The weakness was also with
the Congressmen leaders as most of them are corrupt who gave John enough
opportunity to convince the High command Sonia Gandhi to believe it, and
she was really fooled. But John never realized that one day the truth will
come out and now it is proved that he committed a blunder and this is the
answer what he got from the High Command to get him ouster.
Can anybody will believe his stories now? He should have said this when he
was in his seat and not after he was shunted out. It is not easy to fool
now the Goans.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Luizinho-replaces-John-as-Congress-state-president/articleshow/44635421.cms

Panaji: Outgoing Congress president John Fernandes on Wednesday said there
is a possibility, even circumstantial evidence, that chief minister Manohar
Parrikar colluded with corrupt elements in the Congress to oust him from
the state party president's post.

Fernandes said that Congress recently handed a memorandum to the Goa
governor exposing Parrikar's misdeeds in Goa. The memorandum also
recommended the sacking of Parrikar and if there was no alternative to him,
to have President's rule in Goa. tnn

A copy of the memorandum would be forwarded to Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. Parrikar pressed the panic button due to this and colluded with
corrupt Congress leaders to oust him, Fernandes said.

On Tuesday Fernandes had said that him being replaced as state Congress
president was not a surprise and that the high command was acceding to his
request to be relieved on moral grounds after the Lok Sabha election
results.

Fernandes also hinted at a quid pro quo between Congressmen and Parrikar.
Justifying his statement, Fernandes said the Parrikar government has
recently withdrawn a case that the South Goa collector had filed against
the wife of Luizinho Faleiro (incoming Congress president).

The case was that Faleiro's wife had allegedly tampered with form I XIV
to remove the names of tenants on Zuzmobor island. To return the favour,
Faleiro had requested former Velim Congress MLA Felipe Neri Rodrigues to
withdraw the case he had filed against BJP organizing secretary Satish
Dhond in the signature forgery case. This is a case of you scratch my
back, I scratch yours, Fernandes said.

Fernandes said that people are shouting that Parrikar has infiltrated the
Congress legislature party and may even infiltrate the Goa Pradesh Congress
committee. I urge young Congressmen to stay within the Congress and fight
corruption, Fernandes said.

He said he had done a wonderful job as whistle blower and would continue
to do so. Fernandes said he had even used his personal funds to keep the
party going and is now leaving the party with Rs 22lakh as balance and the
party accounts audited.

Christian meet organizers get notice on terror link

A similar exercise had caused a furore in 2011 when the police

in a similar format.

  Bhopal:
After refusing permission for an annual Christian gathering in
Jobat, Alirajpur, the Madhya Pradesh Police have served a notice on the
organizer asking whether his organization was involved in terror,
criminal or anti-social activities among other things.

Jhabua-based
Moksha Foundation had organized a gathering in Jobat from October 6-9,
but the Alirajpur administration refused permission because a marriage
between a Christian man and a Hindu woman had caused communal tension.

On
Tuesday, foundation president Kapil Sharma was asked by the police to
fill up personal information like name, address, passport number and
political association among 20 points listed in a one-page document.

The
second document sought information about the organization: like the
source of funding; whether involved in terror or criminal activities;
details of members, including foreigners; and a clear note on the actual
inclination of the organization (religious, political, social or
communal).

A similar exercise had caused a furore in 2011 when
the police in some districts sought to collect details of Christian
organizations in a similar format.

In the wake of protests by
the minority community, which dubbed the exercise as community
profiling, the state police headquarters had claimed that the circular
was issued by a mistake. Jhabua SP Krishnaveni Desavatu told The Indian
Express that it was a routine exercise.

“Maybe the local police
did not have information about the organization. They normally collect
such information from active and inactive organization. There is nothing
 to worry,” she said.

Sharma said never in the past had he been
asked to provide information about himself and the organization. He said
he would reply in a couple of days but took offence to the type of
questions.

Spokesperson of Catholic Bishops Conference, Madhya
Pradesh, Fr Johny P J said the Catholic community would challenge the
exercise if it was ordered by the administration.

“Normally the police resort to such steps under pressure from right-wing
organizations,” he said.

[Goanet] INDIAN JUDICIARY IN CRISIS?

2014-10-09 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Justice R.M. Lodha who recently retired as the Chief Justice of India must
be lauded for his firm decision not to seek or accept any post retirement
posting from the Government. He has rightly expressed a very unyielding
view that there must be at least a two year cooling period before any
retired Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court takes up any
constitutional post.

On the flip side the other former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam who
had retired on 26th April this year, was swiftly groomed by the Narendra
Modi led NDA and on September 5th sworn in as the Governor of Kerala. Does
it not send a wrong message to other Judges due to retire that if they
remain in good books with the government, a plumb post retirement lollipop
is assured. Dark days ahead for the Indian Judiciary?

The negatives I have heard about Salcete are as follows:
(a) Margao is so disorganised and dirty; one cannot even cross a road

(b) Saxtti cuisine is very spicy - One year later ...Bardez cuisine

The positives I have heard:
(c) Colva looks much cleaner now that Calangute has been messed up.
(d) It is good that you don't have as many Furxem (Vipers) in Salcete

and it received the assent of the President of
India on December 16, 1964. To give it special
protection -- along with the Fifth Amendment to the
Agricultural Tenancy Act -- it has been included in
the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution of India
[which was added to the Constitution in 1951,
primarily to deal with a situation in which the
Supreme Court struck down land reform laws -Ed.].

The object of the Act is to give protection and ownership
rights to the marginalised sections. That is, to the tenants
and cultivators, from the oppression and suppression of the
feudal class which was then dominating Goan society in
respect of the land which the former were or are cultivating.

The Goa Legislative Assembly in a recently concluded Assembly
session, by way of Bill No. 20 of 2014, passed the amendment
to the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act 1964. With this
amendment, the Goa Government has introduce three major
changes to the Agricultural Tenancy Act.

One change which the amendment tries to introduce
is to take away the authority of the Mamlatdar's
court in deciding tenancy cases, Secondly, it
introduces contract farming and thirdly, it puts a
time limitation over filing tenancy cases.

From a bare reading of this amendment, it appears that the
amendment was introduce without studying the ground
realities, without the application of mind and without taking
into confidence and consideration all stakeholders,
particularly the tenants and have-nots and the institutions
which are working for their benefit -- like the Mamlatdar,
and the agriculture department. Yet, it appears that before
introducing the present Amendment, the haves of the feudal
class might have been taken into confidence and it has been
drafted as per their whims and fancies; the amendment is
likely to benefit them rather then the illiterate and
ignorant farming class or have-nots.

GROUND REALITIES

As stated by the Government, one of the objects of
the amendment particularly in introducing contract
farming is to avoid fertile land from remaining
fallow. Before introducing such an amendment, has
the government undertaken any study or survey to
known the ground realities over why people keep
  agricultural land fallow?

The answer may be in negative.

As per my study, most of the fertile paddy fields,
particularly in the villages, are kept fallow on account of
problem of stray cattle. The High Court of Goa, in Writ
Petition No. 261 of 2004 (Audhut Kurtarkar v/s State of
Goa), directed local bodies to solve the stray cattle
problem. Government has also provided local bodies with
funds and manpower but no efforts have been made by the local
bodies nor by the Goa government to solve the problem of
stray cattle. Even today, herds of stay cattle are seen on
the road and in the paddy field. In some cases, the farmers
cultivate but during the night stray cattle destroy paddy
fields, which discourages the farmers from cultivating.

Secondly, land holding are often small and segregated and it
is surveyed accordingly. Cultivation becomes difficult and
uneconomical for the farmers which sometime also result in
keeping the land fallow. Collapsed embankments (bunds)
results in saline water entering into the field. There are
also issues relating to sluice gates being opened by
fisherfolk at khazan lands, the release of sewage water by
big residential complex into the paddy field. These are all
other factors which sometimes contributes to keeping the land
fallow. The government should have studied these problem
first before introducing any amendment as the problem needs
to be solved permanently. But from the manner in which the
government has gone about introducing the present problem,
there seems to be no official intention to solve the problem
but rather to create some more problems.

TIME LIMITS

By way of this amendment, the government has introduced
Section 60C, through which a three-year time limit has been
set to file tenancy cases under Sections 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 10,
11, 12, 14, 18,18A, 18B, 18C, 18E, 18F, 18G, 18H, 18J or 18K.

The inserted section reads as under: No Court of
Senior Civil Judge shall entertain any application
  under section 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18,
  18A, 18B, 18C, 18E, 18F, 18G, 18H, 18J and/or 18K
of this Act unless it is filed within a period of
three year from the date of commencement of the Goa
Agricultural Tenancy (Amendment) Act, 2014. This

[Goanet] North Goans marrying South Goans (Response to Antonio Menezes from Rose Fernandes)

2014-10-09 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear Antonio

Not hint, fact.   Unless one puts the truth in a bottle and renames it
ignorance.

I am referring to the past here (not so much the present which has changed),
tailors held important positions in our society (along with fishermen and rice
growers).   Over a cup of chai, sewing machine and a little chit chat, they
were priviledged to pick up the goings on in each household, who had a
marriagable son, marriagable daughter, etc. Apart from seeing a happy ending,
they would have secured the contract of making the wedding dress as well as
outfits for the rest of the wedding party.    Personally I think their
exclusion from the mainstream Goykar Association in East Africa resulting them
in setting up their own Tailors Society was due to fear not ignorance of
how much they knew about all of us.

Fishermen and rice growers also commanded important positions, they were key to
our survival, rice and fish curry has and will always remain the staple food of
our people.

I agree with Frederick that caste was a primary factor in marriages but the
village element should not be under estimated and played a part albeit to a
lesser extent.   Bearing in mind this happened over 70 years ago, a relative
till today often relates the story of a man who had a health condition and as a
result no girl in the village would marry him, he eventually married a girl
outside his village.

Often I joke with Melvyn that had I married him while my ancestors were alive,
he would not have been able to enter their homes through the front door.

(Any response to this post will receive a reply in two weeks after my return
from Northern India)

Gabe Menezes,
This is a great memento from 1968.

I am reminded of the times I had then watching my parents and their friends
dance - with their formal poses. The men wore bow ties and the women always
wore large smiles. Often, the most interesting part of the night was the raffle
and prizes.

The band was always the big draw i.e. the deciding factor on whether or not
people attended a function.

Other than that, my memory is about as blank as your post. It is a pity when
someone decides, We like doing things the old way and we are not going to
change.

Every other net group that I am on has the technology that allows members to
post and view pictures. Perhaps I will soon see your picture and mementoes
elsewhere..
