RE: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] URL Blacklists - Don't post spam to the list
What are you talking about? DNSRBL's work just fine with iMail, and do not need Declude. The only mention of needing Declude was if you wanted to put another spam-fighting software package (ASSP) in front of iMail, which renders DNSRBL lookups useless. That is a shortcoming of ASSP though, not iMail. I use iMail's DNSRBL lookups and a combination of other filters I have written myself to catch at least 97% of the spam that hits our mail server, without the use of Declude or any other third-party software. While 97% may not be perfect, I don't know of any mail server program that is. I have also used ASSP and Declude on other iMail servers as well, and while each of them has their merits, criticizing iMail as a stand-alone program just isn't warranted in my opinion. I would guess that most admins here would agree that iMail is a good product, or we wouldn't be wasting our time on it. Hello all, I'm currently tasked with hosting email for approximately 125,000 users across roughly 5000+ domains in the near future. Is anyone out there hosting this amount of users/domains using IMail? If so what are the machine specs that you currently use? One note, we are utilizing 2 servers as smtp gateways for offloading Virus and Spam processing. We aren't tightly filtering the spam so a lot of it will get past the gateways. Here are the specs we currently have for an ednpoint mail server: 4 Proc 2.0 Ghz Xeon (hyper-threading available) 4GB of RAM 5 X 72GB in RAID 0 Windows 2003 Standard Edition Dual Intel Pro 100/S teamed NICS Webmail will be used pretty heavily with the KillerWebMail templates. There is also a high probability that at least 20%-30% of the 125,000 users are stale accounts that are no longer being used. If anyone has tips on identifying stale users other than the Dir commands in dos that would be awesome. Thanks in advance for the help! Re: [IMail Forum] DECLUDE DOWN IMAIL 8.11
Since the upgrade, declude is not working (AV), no logfiles at the SPOOL\VIRUS . It sounds like Ipswitch may have re-introduced a bug from old v6 upgrades: The two most likely issues are: [1] IMail overwrote the registry entry that Declude uses. You can run the \IMail\Declude.exe file once to fix the registry entry, and then stop/restart the IMail SMTP service to get IMail to recognize the change. If that doesn't work: [2] IMail may have changed the Official Host Name (Host Name on the General tab of IMail Administrator, when localhost is highlighted on the left side of the screen) of your server. If that is the case, you can just change it back (and then stop/restart the SMTP service) to fix the problem. If neither of those explain the problem, please contact the declude.com support@ address, and we can look into it further. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. RE: [IMail Forum] AOL Blacklisting: Mechanics?
Yes, I regularly find myself on their lists, but their appear to be different degrees of blacklisting going on at AOL - at the very least there is a Tier 1 blacklist and a Tier 2 blacklist. Hi, I had problems with some rules too. I have added the \ character in from of each rule, so for instance my old rules: S~[bmwnav]:BMWNAV S~[spam-:SPAM S~[IMail Forum]:IMAIL were changed into: S~\[bmwnav\]:BMWNAV S~\[spam\-:SPAM S~\[IMail\ Forum\]:IMAIL This seems to work... And suddenly it appears that some or all of my server-side filters (rules) are not working, but I've not investigated that yet, or searched the archives. -- --- illigitimi non carborundum --- Bud Durland, CNE Mold-Rite Plastics Network Administrator http://www.mrpcap.com --- To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/

[IMail Forum] Forum Etiquette
This Information is also posted in the KB at http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20020802-DM01.htm Thanks, Tripp Allen Software Development Manager, Messaging When posting to the IMail Forum mail list, please comply with the following rules: 1. Please search the IMail Support Center, the Archives and FAQ. IMail Support Center: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/index.asp Knowledge Base: http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/ Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ 2. Understand what it is you want to ask. 3. If you want a good answer, provide good details. 4. Please use a subject line that will attract attention to your problem and offers an insight of what asking about. (Example, a subject line of Help will be ignored.) 5. Turn off Return Receipt Requests in your mail client. 6. Do not add attachments unless specifically asked to do so. 7. Only add .zip or .txt attachments. Others waste bandwidth and are larger. If posting a log file only post the section relevant to the question. 8. Do not post in html format. This size of a message in HTML is a lot larger than that of plain text. This is a problem for those on dial-up and those with PDAs. It also makes it difficult for digest users. 9. Delete unnecessary text when quoting a post. It is wasting bandwidth. 10. Do not use a DIGITAL SECURITY Signature. It wastes bandwidth and causes problems for some users, such as those with PDAs. 11. If you change the topic or direction thereof, change the subject line. 12. Please allow time for people to respond to your post. We are working too. Plus, some lists are known to be slow to post. 13. Please do not include lines of company/private legal disclaimer. You are sending to a list. It is going to be resent to everyone on that list. It is no longer a private or confidential message. The lists are archived and have been known to show up on Google searches. 14. Do not include any line as part of a message signature like, If you have received this communication in error... 15. If your post is criticized, please reread your original post you sent along with the reply and take a few minutes to think about them before snapping out a reply. 16. Do not initiate a flame against others. It is improper to do so on a list. Take it off list. Why not share these filters? I am only able to filter about 50% using DNSBL's and Content Filtering... Regards, Nika. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:IMail_Forum- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of William Van Hefner Sent: dinsdag 4 mei 2004 9:14 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] URL Blacklists - Don't post spam to the list What are you talking about? RE: [IMail Forum] Capacity Planning for Imail?
I would be interested to see a reply to this thread, as yet there have been none. Any volunteers? The primary issue involved in this case is the web messaging -- web messaging uses up much more CPU time and bandwidth than POP3/IMAP. I really don't know the capacity of web messaging. The other issue is the amount of mail to be processed. For 125,000 users, that could be anywhere from several thousand E-mails/day to millions. A single server (even an old one) could easily thousands; a single server (high-end modern one) running IMail would have a very hard time handling 1,000,000+ E-mails/day. So for an accurate answer, more information would be needed. A lot of IMail users have experience with large numbers of users and E-mails/day (we have customers processing 500,000+ E-mails/day on a single IMail server complete with virus and spam scanning), but there are fewer that have experience with very large volumes of web messaging traffic. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. RE: [IMail Forum] Capacity Planning for Imail?
I have a box that runs about 120k users that is not far off the spec that you have below. The main differences are I guess: We only have the two domains on that box We use messagelabs to scan for viruses both in and out so we only talk to a limited number of SMTP servers We use a SQL Server database ( on a separate machine) to authenticate against. We use a 200GB RAID 1 + 0 drive for the mailboxes and a separate RAID 1+0 drive for the spool directory. We don't run the anti spam filtering with in Imail. We currently run at about 100k inbound messages a day and up to 4000 unique users an hour and the cpu ticks over at an average of about 30% on all four processors. We do, however, occasionally see spikes up to the high 90 / 100%. Once or twice a day which last for about 30 seconds to a couple a minutes. Usage patterns vary etc but I would have thought that your box would do the trick though I would question the use of RAID 0 - surely you would want some resilience? Oh yeah on the performance level if you think most of your customers are going to be using webmail then we found that IIS does a better job of serving images than the webmail service - so put all the webmail images on IIS and hack the web skins to point to IIS. [IMail Forum] New rule syntax catches more than attachments
Hello! I applied the name=.{1,64}\.ext rule to my Imail 8.01 yesterday, so I could filter out COM files. So far, it caught twelve viruses (the rule forwards these messages to me). It looks quite valuable, but there are two bizarre side effects: I'm receiving more spam than before, and I'm also receiving personal email. As for the spam issue, I can create a rule to dump those messages into a separate folder, and delete them at the same time. But the personal email thing is weird; four of those messages were bidconfirmations and endofauction statements from ebay, and another was an .eml forward from someone's home address to work. I told that person about the testing we're doing, and they granted me permission to read the message, so I could decipher why it's getting forwarded. So I need to know these two things: How can that rule be tweaked to be less inclusive? Is there something in all these messages I'm receiving that would help me decipher why they're getting caught? I hate to open spam, if it can be avoided. Thanks! [IMail Forum] Imail gateway for Exchange
I want to be able to use our IMAIL server to act as a gateway for mail bound for an exchange server, while continuing processing mail with Imail for other domains. Currently we have Imail running with one IP-ed domain and several virtual IP-less domains. These all use the same spam settings. This part will remain the same. If I wanted to use the same spam settings, I think I need to just add an MX record to the domain in question to point to the IMAIL box. The IMAIL box would have an entry in Hosts file to point to Exchange Box... Does that sound like all I need? If however I wanted different spam settings, I would need another IP-ed domain on Imail box and configure the spam settings there. I'd point the MX to a host at this new IP and still have entry in Hosts file for Exchange box. How would I configure the domain within Imail without using the domain name? So, what kind of rule would it take to capture all incoming messages posted to a list, review them for content, then pass them on to the list if they met with your corporate guidelines, ie slow the list traffic down when a new version of the subject product comes out? I posted a message 2 hours ago, verified the log that it was accepted, still haven't seen it come through. Sean Diana wrote: My posts taking forever!! Re: [IMail Forum] New rule syntax catches more than attachments
I applied the na me=.{1,64}\.ext rule to my Imail 8.01 yesterday, so I could filter out COM files. You'll need to remember that HTML often includes things like na me= followed shortly by www.example.co m (spaces added to bypass filtering). It looks quite valuable, but there are two bizarre side effects: I'm receiving more spam than before, and I'm also receiving personal email. Huh? As for the spam issue, I can create a rule to dump those messages into a separate folder, and delete them at the same time. How can you possibly be getting *more* spam after applying this rule? That just doesn't make sense. But the personal email thing is weird; four of those messages were bidconfirmations and endofauction statements from ebay, and another was an .eml forward from someone's home address to work. Ah, you mean that the filter is generating false positives. That's due to the information above. Unfortunately, filters don't do a very good job with blocking attachments (blocking legitimate E-mails, or not catching attachments that it should), especially with .com files. You need an AV program to accurately block file extensions. With research of the archives, you can do a pretty decent job, though. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. RE: [IMail Forum] New rule syntax catches more than attachments
I tried to filter out the com attachments and noticed the same thing but I am on 8.05HF2. I decided it looked like if the email was html, it was catching .com when a url was in the email. I ended up removing the rule :( -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Eric Geater 5/3/04 Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 11:19 AM To: Imail Forum Subject: [IMail Forum] New rule syntax catches more than attachments Hello! Thanks! [IMail Forum] Disk Deframenter?
I looked on the IPSwitch Forum Archive but didn't find anything. What is a good Disk Defragmenter to use for the I-Mail? We have version 7.07. Are you able to use the Windows 2000 server version, or do you need a 3rd party defragmenter that will still be able to defrag with the services running? RE: [IMail Forum] Disk Deframenter?
A lot of folks use Diskeeper and it works very well for them. Set it and forget it if you will. Great scheduling and does a fantastic job. Some say it'sa lot more thorough than the built in Windows defrag tool. The Windows version is a scaled down Diskeeper I think. I have not had any problems using it over the past year and a half. How can you possibly be getting *more* spam after applying this rule? That just doesn't make sense. After I sent it, I realized that I forgot something: Everything coming in that matched the rule was forwarded to my address, so I could LOOK for false positives. My apology, I should have said that in the first place. It made sense for me to receive more email (and perhaps some spam, too). I was actually LOOKING for the spam, but I didn't expect the false positives. Since then, I have tweaked the numbers in the brackets from 1,64 to 1,32, and have sent multiple tests from an outside mail account to try fooling it. I just discovered that an email with attachment that had a filename 31 characters long got caught by the rule, while an email each with 32 and 33 characters for a filename was sent to its intended recipient. Provided that a virus keeps the filename less than 32 characters, I should be okay. I don't know about short URLs though... [IMail Forum] Imail 8.1X problems (iwebmsg.exe, SMTPd32.exe, rules.ima)
Since installing Imail 8.10HF2 (was running 8.05 HF3 flawlessly before that), I have had several problems. The 2 most noteworthy are as follows: -iwebmsg.exe terminates unexpectedly. This happens after what seems to be a fairly random period of time with no appearant cause. -SMTPd32.exe appears to have a memory leak. If I leave it running for several days, the process is several gigabytes in size. I have contacted Ipswitch repeatedly about these problems. I was lead to believe that 8.11 would solve these issues, but it has not. In addition to these problems it has added an additonal problem: -When a rules.ima is processed, it seems to consider things matching a particular rule at random. An example: The message below it says matched the Imail rule S~[Beatdown]:Beatdown. I sent a test message from a yahoo account with just test as the subject and body, yet it still said this matched. Re: [IMail Forum] Email User Setup Question
Ipswitch calls the nobody alias a feature (http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/IMail_Server/admin.html), but the reality of SPAM these days is that you'll get a dictionary list of messages sent the domain that are probably currently being rejected as invalid user addresses. You might want to make sure you have a value other than 0 entered into the Max Mailbox Size field for the client, just so the system will know when to stop filling up the disk when it's collected that much junk. -- Doug [EMAIL PROTECTED] Kathy Lees wrote: What do you mean by the nobody alias? Re: [IMail Forum] Imail 8.1X problems (iwebmsg.exe, SMTPd32.exe, rules.ima)
This rule says: If the subject contains any of the letters in the class [Beatdown] put it in the mailbox beatdown. Test contains the T, so it's a match. If you want to match the word beatdown, try S~beatdown:beatdown.
