RE: [IMail Forum] Smart Phones

2008-12-18 Thread Jim Comerford
On my Win based Treo, I use the verizon wireless sync option to keep my
phone and outlook synced up. The big advantage of that over both accessing
POP3 is that when you delete and answer emails you can see those same
results in both places. You do need to always have the desktop running
though.

[IMail Forum] OT: Best Domain Reseller Account

2008-10-28 Thread Jim Comerford
I'm looking for a good inexpensive domain reseller account. Don't need
hosting services, don't want company advertsing stuff to my customers - just
a simple interface to allow me to manage my customer domain registrations
and renewals with a minimum of hassle and expense. Have about 200-300
domains to manage right now.

Any suggestions (or warnings)...?

[IMail Forum] SSL/TLS on IMAP...

2008-05-23 Thread Jim Comerford
I have a customer who want to utilize IMAP with SSL/TLS. I do not wantt o
force all of my users to do this however.

I currently use ver 8.22
What's involved in setting this up and are there any implications to doing
so.

I see there are check boxes on the IMAP services page:
Enable Dedicated SSL Listener on port (993)
Enable TLS
Disable unsecure login

I assume I also need as SSL certificate on the server where do I need to
configure that.

Thanks.

[IMail Forum] Mail Not Getting to YAHOO (from Webmessaging)

2008-04-18 Thread Jim Comerford
We are using Imail 8.22 with declude.

If a user receives mail from any YAHOO account and then responds with
Web-Messaging to that user they get the following error messge:

undeliverable to ~~~yahoo username~~~ anyyahoouser@yahoo.com

Body of message generated response:
554 delivery error: dd This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account
(~~YAHOO USERNAME~~

anyyahoouser@yahoo.com) [0] - mta367.mail.re4.yahoo.com

It DOES NOT seem to have the same result when the same message is replied to
with Outlook - it goes thru and is delivered. The Yahoo address does exist.

Yahoo's website
(http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/postmaster/postmaster-01.html) quotes
this exact message and says it is because the user does not exist which is
clearly wrong.

It must have something to do with the web-messaging interface since the same
message replied to with outlook works fine...

Any Ideas.

RE: [IMail Forum] Move Domain from Mailboxes to store/forward Gateway

Hi Ted,

I do have domains left in Imail.

I have since removed the HOSTS entry and changed the MX record to send mail
directly to the WinSBS server and outside mail goes there (at least the ones
that see the DNS change already).

Our queued mail or any new mail I send directly though my server is still

[IMail Forum] IMAP Issue

2006-11-29 Thread Jim Comerford
Got a strange one for you to ponder.

Use Imail 8.22 To host this domain.

Have a user A using IMAP.

User A account works fine with Outlook (using IMAP).

When user A accesses his mail from a Motorola Q Phone thru verizon using
IMAP, he gets the headers just fine, but gets an error when trying to open a
message:
Failed to connect to incoming mail server. Check your user name and
password and try again.

Another user B on same domain with same phone does NOT have any problems
with his account.
If User B sets up the user A account on User B's phone it gets the
same message.

I have turned on IMAP DEBUG LOGGING and gathered some data - bUT I really
don't know what to look for... any thoughts or Ideas.

In looking thru logs I see one line that catches my eye, but again:

20061129 145538 127.0.0.1 IMAP4 (12AC) sending A12 BAD UID
Invalid Syntax

After this the user logs off

Could this tell me something, or does nyone have any Idea what else to look
for?

Thanks,

There may be some length limitation or punctuation character that causes the

RE: [IMail Forum] It is worth it to buy the SA?

2006-10-25 Thread Jim Comerford

I also feel the need to add my "Me Too" to this thread, so
IPswitch will not think there is only a few that are
dissatisfied.

I too have been lured into extending my SA in hopes of a
stable product coming out to upgrade to - ipswitch even acknowledged their
screwup early on and offered an extra few months to the SA's of those who
renewed... unfortunately those few extra months were not nearly enough.

IPSwitch should really smarten up and release a fix for
8.22 - After All the codebase cannot be all that much different if the same
vulnerability is in 2006.1 too.

Kevin, see if you cannot make Imail step back and gather
some sanity and issue a 8.22 patch.

Im going to weigh in

Ipswitch is monitoring this thread

Based on the fact that
I havent heard of an update even being reviewed for the 8.2x line I am
currently researching alternative mail hosting platforms. I was originally
holding off installing 2006 until it got stable but having a situation where I
am now the proud owner of a system that was installed less than 2 years ago with
a major vulnerability announced I am very angry that Ipswitch is leaving us
hanging on this. This is a core business option for us and certainly failures in
it are high profile and damaging for us. People will not be happy if they cant
get their email because the server got owned by some script kiddie. Its
inexcusable for a commercial software vendor to NOT weigh in on this as soon as
it was announced either to denounce the vuln or to accept responsibility and at
least provide a patch for the mainstream versions of their software. Im sure
that the majority of Imail sites are not running 2006. How could they with how
unstable it has been?

I've been lurking in the weeds
watching this discussion very quickly pick up momentum. I thought I was
internally over-reacting in my perception that Ipswitch has become dollar driven
to the point that it's obviously become detrimental to their client base.
Apparently that isn't just my opinion.
I've forced myself, for the past five
months, to use the webmail client that came with iMAIL 2006.03. There are
some issues that I just find mind boggling. For example...

1) When I
hit the key, I get double spaced. That's a very handy feature if you're
interested in double spacing every line in every email.

2) The sent
folder, at a glance, shows that all of the mail was sent from me, but not who it
was sent to.How does that happen? Is that
what Ipswitch QA thought their customers wanted?

There are issues with attachments that
I've been questioning for months, with no answer.
I asked one of our sales
correspondents to use this client as it would solve a number of his
problems. After two weeks he explained that he'd much rather live with the
myriad of problems he was previously encumbered with than to have to use this
slow, buggy, irritating client. He also mentioned the fact that the main
screen constantly popped in front of the "New Message" screen while he was
typing a longish email... Another wonderful feature...

Is Ipswitch purposely under staffing
for this product? Does it have programmers with the wrong mindset putting
this together? Something is obviously going on over there that's making it
difficult to put out a quality product...

now...-Gil

With Microsoft, you are
not paying an annual service agreement over and above the purchase price. In
this instance Windows 95 is not a good example nor would Windows 2000 as they
both are much older products than version 8.x of IMail. Also, if those companies
who had the keys had service agreements with their clients then yes they should
be required to produce software to alleviate the need for the parallel port.
I may be mistaken but I seem to recall some court cases against Microsoft
that ended up requiring them to support software up to 4 years from its creation
and to maintain patches for the software for a 4 year period from the time of
the following upgrade. But then again I could be
mistaken.
The problem with the
version 8.x Imail server also effects version 2006. 2006 is a massive rewrite
with minor changes made to certain parts of the code. I think Ipswitch got
caught with two generations of the product having problems and is not capable of
handling

[IMail Forum] ERR domain read open fail

2006-10-23 Thread Jim Comerford

I am increasingly seeing these messages in my log
files...

Currently see about a dozen per day. For the most
part these are POP3 accounts and the message seems to get delivered on a
retry. Today however we had an IMAP user receive one of these messages at
the same time their entire main.mbx disappeared. Imail must have created a
new main.mbx and kept chugging along, but a couple of hundred email mesasges in
that account were nowhere to be found (except on backup).

My question is why is this error being generated in the
first place, and when it is is the whole mailbox always being regenerated?
With our usage pattern on the POP3 accounts it is possible that that is
happening and we never noticed - it may have taken the IMAP account to make it
noticed this time.

We have no active virus scanning on the mail server
(except fprot thru declude) or any other processes running that would be
accessing the mailbox files other than Imail (Version 8.22 btw, on windows

seems to get delivered on a retry. Today however we had an IMAP user
receive one of these messages at the same time their entire main.mbx
disappeared. Imail must have created a new main.mbx and kept chugging
along, but a couple of hundred email mesasges in that account were nowhere to be
found (except on backup).

My question is why is
this error being generated in the first place, and when it is is the whole
mailbox always being regenerated? With our usage pattern on the POP3
accounts it is possible that that is happening and we never noticed - it may
have taken the IMAP account to make it noticed this time.

We have no active virus
scanning on the mail server (except fprot thru declude) or any other processes
running that would be accessing the mailbox files other than Imail (Version 8.22
btw, on windows server 2003)

Any Ideas or
solutions.

asp or coldfusion can do this.
In CF you can set a scheduled task. I'm sure WSFTP or something similar could as
well but they would have to be running.Jim Comerford wrote:

[IMail Forum] Possible Killer Message...?

2006-02-08 Thread Jim Comerford
Hi,

I got the followng message and lines in the log file - perhaps someone knows
what it means. BTW: Still on 8.22 (not brave enough to upgrade yet)

Got Postmaster Message:

The messages causing this error have been orphaned in the IMail
spool directory.
Please contact Ipswitch Technical Support.

Any Idea what this means? Also how do I know which files are orphaned from

fine.

   Hi Everyone,

I'm about to impose... I just don't have the time to
figure out how to create these rules, and experiment
until I get them right... So I come to you outstanding
   gurus... (lucky you!)

We're running iMail 7.15, and I assume that I'll both
an inbound and outbound rule, at the domain level, to
   do what I need.

What we have is a work order system, and the work order
IDs end up in the subject lines of our messages. The
format for the work order id is:

   [WO--]

Where n is any digit from 0 to 9.

Eventually the messaging will be handled entirely by
the work order system, but we always anticipate adding
properly formatted Work Order IDs into the subject
lines of messages sent OUTSIDE the work order system
too. These rules would work for both.

We'd like to trap any messages that have a work order
id anywhere in the subject line, and COPY the message
to a mailbox, [EMAIL PROTECTED] The message should still go
to the destination... we just want to have a copy of it
to the special mailbox for pickup by the work order
   system for additional tracking.

This goes for messages that come IN to the domain
(replies from customers) as well as messages that go
OUT through our domain (messages TO customers).

Is there a rule that can do what I need, and if so,
would someone be willing to supply it to me, 'cause I'm
on a tight deadline? I'd really appreciate it, and
totally owe you a beer (or a sparkling grape juice, if
   drinkin's not your thing :)

   Thanks,

   Marc

RE: [IMail Forum] New IMail 2006 Pricing

2005-11-17 Thread Jim Comerford
Kevin,

Am I understanding your explanation correctly...?

The user limit is the limit of how many users in ANY ONE domain can have,
not cumulative?

So if I host 100 domains with 5 users each would this be 500 users - the way
I am reading your reply below, I could have a 25 user version in this
scenario... Is this correct?

Hello Jacques,

It's actually a little more lenient than that.

You can't have more than 25 users in any single domain. So you could have
up to 25 in each of your 3 domains, if you so desired, simultaneously,
equating to 75 users total.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the info. So if I have this correct I could use the 25 user
license with 3 domains so long as I don't go over 25 mailboxes combined
between all three domains? In my set up two of the domains I just forward
to an exchange server with ~180 aliases and there is only one administrative
box with web access for each domain. The third domain has only 18
mailboxes.

Thanks,

Hi Dan,

Good question.

Correct, there is no limit on Domains on IMail Server 2006. Aliases do not
count as users, so you can have unlimited Domains, Aliases and Lists.

A single user can have POP and IMAP and Web access and it counts as 1 user.
A user is, technically, anyone that can both send AND receive email. An
alias can receive but can't send and hence does not count as a user.

bye for now,

kg

Finally, they've said what they mean! Hurray!

Now, if they'd define the term user, that would be nice. I appears that
there is no limit on domains (although I'd prefer to see it specifically
stated), but does an Alias count? does a List count? Is a user the number
of pop3 logins in any 24-hour period? What?

My site might need 100, 250 or 1000 user pricing, depending on how they
count.

RE: [IMail Forum] My company is in the URL domain blacklist

2005-05-20 Thread Jim Comerford
I wonder if anyone has a good whitelist to share. Using antispamseeder
with the -l -e switches you can exclude urls from the list. There is a
utility by curt turner on ipswitch site which helps do the same But
removing all of the bad listings in the Ipswitch blacklist takes a lot of
time. If someone has already fixed the ipswitch list and has a
comprehensive whitelist it sure would be a timesaver.

Subject: [IMail Forum] My company is in the URL domain blacklist

Hi everyone,

I just started to implement the built-in spam filter in Imail. I downloaded
the latest zip file and was looking through the URL domain blacklist text
file and the company I work for, Xanga.com, is on it.
We don't send out spam, we send out email subscriptions because our users
signs up for them. I'm curious how did my company ended up on there. I
think I read it somewhere that Ipswitch doesn't maintain the list. I just
want everyone to know that we don't send out spam and don't block us please.

Thanks,

Jon

[IMail Forum] 2 letter Usernames

2005-05-16 Thread Jim Comerford
It used to be that 2 letter domain names were supported by Imail. Then a
later version of the admin interface set a minimum of three letters, but one
could use the command line interface to create one of two letters. In the
latest version, that no longer seems to be the case.

I created a three character name and went into the registry and changed it
to 2 letters. Sending mail to that account works, and can be forwarded, but
trying to login via the web-based or the pop3 interface does not seem to
work.

Is this simply not possible to do anymore, or am I just missing something in
the registry?

[IMail Forum] Move Mailboxes.

2005-05-06 Thread Jim Comerford
I want to move my mailboxes drive from using c:\imail to using d:\imail.

A search of the archives found an article on how to change one domain by
just changing it in the imail administrator screen, but did not find much
else (I may not be searching for the right thing). One would assume you
would need to stop services, move the directory structure, change it in
Imail administrator screen, and then restart services.

Will this in fact do the trick? Are the other issues to consider?

To go one step further, I have quite a few domains defined (one with an ip,
and ~50 virtual) so I'd really rather not have to go into each one and
change it... Is there away to use the registry to do the same -- or are I
asking for trouble doing it this way?

Anyone have a checklist, or a link to an article on how to do this.

Thanks,
Jim

RE: [IMail Forum] domain aliases

2005-04-29 Thread Jim Comerford
Ok, here goes I think these log entries are related to the domain alias
problem.

This user's domain is defined as a virtual domain as:
PremiereOffices.com (note capitalization)
A domain alias was setup PremierOffice.com (note capitalization and lack
of e in middle)

After 8.2 Upgrade - This user could no longer AUTH using the domain alias.
The AUTH failure was appending the main hostname of the IP'ed domain onto
the end of the domain alias which was trying to AUTH. See:

We have identified a problem with using mixed case in the host the domain
aliases. We are working quickly to fix this problem but for now if the
user(s) having the problem will make sure to use all lower case in their
SMTP AUTH and you should make sure your domain alias is saved as all lower
case, the user should be ok.

I think i may have found another little glitch in the new version...

I have a domain called domaineoffices.com with a domain alias of
domainoffices.com (note no e in middle on alias - this is a virtual
domain). The user had been using the alias in the login name to both
auth and login for mail. It worked fine until I upgraded.

I see auth errors in the log where is say auth failed for
user@domain[EMAIL PROTECTED]
where the @mail.sbsnet.com was appended by Imail.

anyone else see anything like

RE: [IMail Forum] Imail 8.2 and Mac clients

2005-04-29 Thread Jim Comerford
I also have a support incident open on this issue. My reply so far from
ipswitch has been and I quote:

I am not able to duplicate this problem using Outlook Express 6 for Windows
(unfortunately, I have no Macintosh machines with which to test). Are the
users experiencing issues entering their domain.com information with the
same case as the Official Host Name and Host Alias information setup in
IMail? Are you using an external database for this domain?

For what its worth, it seems newer macs are not showing this problem based
on user reports. It appears that the older ones that required
user%domain.com as the username are failing. One Mac producing the
problem has OS9 with Outlook Express 5, another had OS9 with Entourage 2001.

The domain alias CASE issue the response refers to is unrelated to Mac's it
seems but may apply in your case. From what I have seen though that would
show an auth failure on user@example.com@your.iphost.name.com rather
than the AUTH failure on your main Iped domain.

I put the IP address of the client in my relay for address list which

I don't disagree with you at all. I do disagree (apparently with Kevin)
that this has ANYTHING to do with CASE.
My users have tested this and it doesn't work no matter the case. As Jim
stated, the CASE situation results in an auth failure on
user@example.com@my.ohn.com. My users are failing with an entirely
different pattern: user@my.ohn.com, and I just hope Ipswitch doesn't
ignore this problem, thinking that is the CASE problem when it is not.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Imail 8.2 and Mac clients

I spoke with a very knowledgeable person in Tech Support last night and,
while there are several issues that must be resolved with 8.2, the biggest
issue is that fact that there is a problem with managing the case of the
username and domain name.

The problem is this: In if someone's username is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
someone sends an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note difference of UPPER
CASE S and lower case s in the two different e-mail addresses), the server
will not authenticate the user in the database and will reject the message
as non-deliverable.

That same issue applies to sending messages when authentication is required.
If a person's e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and their account is
setup as [EMAIL PROTECTED], then they will not be able to authenticate
to SEND mail either.

These issues are unresolved with both MAC and WINDOWS clients.

According to Ipswitch tech support, they are supposed to have this issue
resolved by mid-morning today.

In the interim, if they are only affecting a few users, just have them use
the web interface to send messages as that is working without a problem - at
least on Windows 2000 Server.

Are there other issues? Yes. Are they causing problems? Yes.

Should this have been resolved prior to releasing the software? Yes, but
the world is not perfect and neither is software development and I'm pretty
certain that most of us have placed ourselves in a similar situation at
least one time in the past.

In this case, as it was explained to me, Ipswitch had this version of the
software in use on several beta testing domains and neither this problem nor
the other problems that have presented themselves were noted during the beta
test phase.

I have been critical of Ipswitch in many previous posts. However, in this
case, I was able to speak with a knowledgeable tech support person, Kevin
(give some credit where credit is due), and he was upfront and honest with
me about the situation. Given what appear to be some pretty substantial
improvements, overall, in both the anti-spamming capabilities (thanks for
the SPF guys!) and the fact that we appear to have already cut down the
amount of spam we were receiving by more than 80%, this is a pretty
significant upgrade and I am willing to give Ipswitch the benefit of the
doubt and let them get the patch ready to be deployed as quickly as they are
capable.

Please feel free to flame me if you disagree with me.

Sandy,

Thanks for your patience on this I have been slowly approaching using your
script when I get the time... You mentioned recently that for the
exchnage2aliases script to work I need to be logged into exchange (or the
network) as a valid user. Now this is likely a dumb question, but I'll ask
anyway... If the exchange server I want to act as a gateway for is on a
remote system somewhere, I guess I would need to have some kind of script
run on my Imail server to connect and logon to that remote exchange system -
how is this generally done?

I dont know when some of these options came along, I'm on
the latest version... there is a "Relay For Addresses" section... one of the
options in there is "Skip antispam filters" if the sending IP address is
in there and you have that checked -- that may be your

[IMail Forum] domain aliases

2005-04-28 Thread Jim Comerford

I think i may have found
another little glitch in the new version...

I have a domain called
domaineoffices.com with a domain alias of domainoffices.com
(note no"e" in middle on alias- this is a virtual domain). The
user had been using the alias in the login name to both auth and login for
mail. It worked fine until I upgraded.

I see auth errors in the
log where is say auth failed for
"user@domain[EMAIL PROTECTED]
where the
@mail.sbsnet.com was appended by Imail.

anyone else see anything
like
this?

RE: [IMail Forum] So Since Imail 8.20 is out..

I loaded it also, so far so good.

Recently there was chatter that 8.2 would allow smtp to
listen on port 25 and alternate ports like 587... anyone see where to config
that? Also interested in configuring the dictionary attack protection that
was mentioned would be included in 8.2.

Having a current SA for Imail Professional, I dl'ed and
upgraded to 8.2 and everything seems to be going smooth so far. I am
tailing the mail log now and it is still working, at least. Declude is
still working with it. I went into Imail Admin and took a look
around. There's a min and max threads in the SMTP advanced properties now,
testament to the newmultithreaded SMTP engine. There are new tabs in
the IP-ful hosts for White Lists and Attachment Blocking. New AntiSpam
tabs include SPF, and Broken MIME Headers. Naturally, I went in and
disabled all of it, since IMgate and Declude are pretty handy at that sort of
thing grin.

Nothing that I saw was changed ifrom my original
configuration. Nothing that was disabled got magically
re-enabled. New features were enabled by default, except SPF and
Attachment Blocking (was enabled, but all items were de-selected by
default). The thing I was interested in was the Dictionary attack
feature that breaks a connection after so many ERRs in a single
connection. I guess that isn't configurable, because there's no place in
the GUI to set it. Not that I need it, but it is really the thing that
Imail needs most IMO, a defense against the dictionary attacks that forced me
and many others to put up an IMgate box or use BlackIce or some other method of
mitigating the extreme loads that Imail was experiencing when it was dealing
with the dictionary attacks on its own.

[IMail Forum] Exchange2Aliases...

2005-04-21 Thread Jim Comerford
I am getting stuck on the syntax of the exchange2aliases script.

I have been trying to call:

Cscript exchange2aliases.vbs cteatest.com
ldap://67.93.212.66/cn=users,dc=server-04,dc=ctea.local ctea.local
cteainc.com

I've also tried variations with always a syntax error on char 41,1 (the Ldap
part)

Basically the exchange server I want to connect to is at ip: 67.93.212.66
The exchange domain is configured as ctea.local.
I have setup a temporary virtual domain in Imail called Cteatest.com (it
will be cteainc.com)
The server is named server-04.
I do have mail passing thru imail server now (via hosts file) for
cteainc.com, but I want to test it first with another temporary virtual
domain.

Can anyone point me in right direction?

[IMail Forum] exchange2aliases

2005-04-14 Thread Jim Comerford
Its time I setup exchange2aliases for two systems for which we are using
Imail as a gateway for exchange. I'm a little confused, so any guidance
would be appreciated.

Right now the MX for one of these domains points to mail.example1.com where
an A Record points mail.example1.com to our Imail box. An entry in the Hosts
file on that server points mail.example1.com to the IP of the Exchange box
(NTSBS). There is no host for this domain configured in Imail.

First off If I implement Exchange2Aliases does this setup remain or need to
change?

Second, I'm not too sure on the syntax for calling exchange2aliases...I see
the example:

Cscript exchange2aliases.vbs mail.broadleaf.local
LDAP://192.168.1.1/cn=users,dc=broadleaf,dc=local broadleaf.local
exchange.broadleaf.local

And am a little confused on the syntax of all this and what names go where

Assume:
  domain = example1.com
MX of example1.com points to Mail.example1.com
Mail.example1.com points to 1.2.3.4 (IMAIL BOX)
Imail box Host File entry mail.example1.com points to 4.5.6.7 (MSSBS
Exchange Box) (currently no dns entry for this server)
  MSSBS Domain = example2.local
  servername = server-04

Thanks In Advance.

RE: [IMail Forum] QUEUEMGR Issue

2005-04-01 Thread Jim Comerford
We have had some queue manager issues, and For what is worth, we utilize a
script which automatically runs ipswitch's antispamseeder and then restarts
queuemgr with:

net stop queuemgr
net start queuemgr

And we can trace most of our Quemanager hangups to one of these events
running where the queue manager never restarts properly. When it happens we
need to reboot the server, because when we try to kill the process we get an
error. We don't have any ERR 005 when that happens.

I would look through the log for any ERR 005's for a start. If you have them
there will be a step number that you need to get to support along with the
files (Q D) that caused it. QM reports to the SMTP log independently of
the SMTPD but since it _is_ part of the SMTP delivery process it logs to the
same place as the listener so you have it all in one place.

[IMail Forum] Shared Calendar...?

2005-03-30 Thread Jim Comerford

We
currently use Imail to host over 100 domains and a couple of thousand email
addresses.

A
client is inquiring about the feasibility of a shared calendar. I know ICS
offers this functionality now, but is also bloated with other "features" I don't
want.I am exploring my options.

1. Can
my Imail work as-is for existing customers and I just buy ICS for say 50 users
for this particular client -- or would this not work, and I'd need a completely
different server to run this ICS version of Imail on.

2. Do
any of you utilize any other 3rd part solutions, which would allow a shared
calendar and if so, how well do they work.

3. Are
there any other products/factors I should consider that I have not
mentioned

Thanks,
Jim

[IMail Forum] OT: Mail Config Issue

2004-11-30 Thread Jim Comerford
This is slightly off-topic, but this is the best list I know for mail
issues.

We host a web site and mail for this client

They want to start using an internal Exchange Server and pass most of the
mail via Exchange Pop3 connector.
They have a few external users who for some reason MUST continue using pop3
This works fine on incoming mail.

If Exchange user however sends mail to an POP3 user on the same domain the
problem begins.

I'm not an Exchange person, so these answers may be simple, but I was unable
to find my answers...I have these questions:

Is there a way in exchange to tell it that certain users of that
domain are not internal and
they need to be sent back to our server?

Or if Exchange Server allows some users to connect via POP3 and get
their mail, I could route
all of their mail to Exchange and let those few users access it via
POP3 from Exchange?

Thanks for any direction here...

appreciate any Ipswich staff involvement in this forum.

You pose two questions:

one is to offer another 1000 user level of product... We
are a small ISP falling between the 250 user limit and the 1000 user number, so
yes this may have some appeal to us, but I think the forced bundling of features
is more of a problem... we don't need nor want some of these additional
features... Even your lower number of user cost is excessive If you want to
force a bundle, add declude and make us purchase that... that way I can convince
the boss to buy it... but the AV you offer is overpriced and the other features
we don't need.

Your other question relates to continued offer of a service
agreement for Imail (standalone)... your current $495 price is reasonable and
periodic reasonableincrease infees would be accepted... It may be
best to follow the course of offering upgrade only pricing (at or below current
$495and upgrade and support options (perhaps $495-$995)... or offer
pay-as-you go support at $(95-$250) per incident all of this assumes you
will continue to update the product. This forum provides superior support
for imail anyway and any support issue not handles here probably is a result of
someone in need of hand-holding or a bug in the product...a by product of the
forum is the occasional healthy and humorous spat between
participants.

Hi
Bryan,

The service agreement
prices include the AV subscription renewals as well as service on the components
in the ICS bundle (which in the case of the ISP/EDU bundle is IMail, KWM and
AV). There is one typo in the list concerning the renewal of the ICS ISP
Edition that number should read $3,995 instead of $4,995.

What I would be curious
to know is

1)
Since that
$3,995 number includes subscription for unlimited Symantec AV, would it be
more palatable to have two tiers for the ISP bundles perhaps a 1,000 user
level and an unlimited level? This would substantially drop the cost of
the renewal (I cant give numbers, as I dont have them since at the moment
this is hypothetical).
2)
If we were
to continue to offer a stand-alone Service Agreement for IMail, what would be a
fair price for such an agreement? Please bear in mind that the current
$495 does not cover our Support costs, let alone our Development
costs.

I am asking this forum
these questions, not to start another flame, but to get some feedback I would
appreciate everyones use of correct forum etiquette. It is difficult for
me to post here in good faith while getting personally
flamed.

Thanks,
Jill

Jill,

I received a PowerPoint
presentation from Renee Breckenridge, my new account manager, which also gave
the ICS Annual Renewal fees (new service agreement fees). They were as
follows:

STANDARD
EDITION:
25 Users
$375
100 Users
$995
250 Users
$1495
Unlimited Users
$2995

PREMIUM
EDITION:
25 Users
$449
100 Users
$1295
250 Users
$2695
Unlimited Users
$4995

ISP/EDU
EDITION:
Unlimited Users
$4995

Should I decide to
actually purchase ICS Standard Unlimited just to keep running IMail Server and
receiving support and upgrades to a product I have invested three years of my
time and profit in, my annual renewal fee will increase from $495 to a minimum
of $2995, over 600%. But just to get there, I have to also jump the $4995
hurdle, which is over a 1000% increase in the first
year.

All I have ever used is
IMail Server. Thats all I want, thats all I need, but Ipswitch is no
longer going to provide me with that option. Jill, would Ipswitch rather
have $0 from my company than $495? Is that truly the better deal
financially for the company? Please respond to this e-mail. You have
been very active in the form today. I would appreciate a straightforward
response to my inquiry.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Weird Issue with SMTP32-FWD

Hello, All,
I am having a very weird issue with one of my e-mail hosting customers and I
was hoping that someone could provide some guidance.

We have a customer, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Whenever Gretchen sends an e-mail to
anybody, whether it is an Internet recipient or someone on our IMail server,
the same e-mail address, [EMAIL PROTECTED], always gets a copy of the
message.

Yesterday I had her send a test to my e-mail address,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and I watched the IMail inbox, main.mbx, for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] very closely and sure enough at the same instant I receive
Gretchen's test message one showed up in the [EMAIL PROTECTED] inbox. I
looked over everything in IMail and on their Outlook clients and couldn't
find any settings which would be causing this to happen. To eliminate IMail
as a source of the problem I decided to delete their whole IMail host and
recreate the users from scratch. I did that and we tested again and again
[EMAIL PROTECTED] received a copy of the message.

Here are the headers from the made after we deleted and re-added everything
back...

RE: [IMail Forum] Unable to delete messages in Web Msg. following mass deletion

2004-10-05 Thread Jim Comerford
We ran into something similar when a corrupt message was in the mailbox.
Deleting caused many messages in same mailbox to be deleted and some could
not be deleted. If you search archives for corrupt mailbox I think you
will find some steps we used to fix the mailbox (as much as possible) it
involves renaming the mailbox and dragging some messages into it before
recreating the indexes.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Unable to delete messages in Web Msg. following mass
deletion

All of a sudden, over a dozen of our web messaging (webmail) users began
reporting the exact same problem. In every case, the scenario goes like
this: The user attempted to delete one or more individual messages using
the checkboxes in webmail. But in addition to deleting those messages,
dozens or even hundreds of other messages got deleted that they did NOT have
selected. And from that exact moment on, they are unable to delete ANY
messages from web messaging (it says deleting but then message is still
there). In almost every case, these are users who have been using web
messaging daily with no problems for years.

While I have not been able to reproduce the mass-deletion incident on any
account I've tried, I CAN reproduce the inability to delete messages on all
accounts where this problem has already been reported.

There are at least a hundred other users who are NOT experiencing these
problems. And the problem can be present on one account while another
account on the same domain is working fine. In my testing, I found that I
was able to delete messages in subfolders, but not in the inbox. I also
found that when accessing one of these problem accounts from Outlook,
Outlook was able to fetch messages from the inbox, but it was NOT able to
remotely delete the message on the server, as it normally would after a
send-and-receive.

The only possibly relevent article I found in IPSwitch's knowledgebase
suggested a 'locked' mailbox. But restarting all Imail services, as the
article recommended, has not fixed the problem. The list of people
reporting this problem seems to be growing.

Has anyone run into this problem in the past, or have any ideas?

Thanks!

If I wanted to allow Relay For Addresses and wanted to include all Ips in

a.b.c.20 would be the one I would want to EXCLUDE

I think that using a.b.c.0/28 (netmask 255.255.255.240) would get me the
1-15, but I really don't know how this works for the other blocks
afterwards. I'm looking to make the least number of entries in my relay
for addresses list

Thanks.

[IMail Forum] Supporting Users with port 25 blocked...

2004-08-25 Thread Jim Comerford
We have an increasing number of users who use various ISP's who are blocking
port 25 traffic (ie earthlink, optonline, etc)

Our mail servers require SMTP AUTH.

I searched thru the archives and see discussions on port 587 and on
redirection at the router as a way to allow user of port 25 blocked networks
send mail thru our server.

If the user already uses AUTH, can I just instruct a user to change the
outgoing port from 25 to 587 in his mail client - this would seem to be a
simple solution (almost too simple) am I missing something here?

If I need to resort to port redirection in a router, what implications does
this have on smtp auth or other things.

[IMail Forum] Mail-To-Fax

Using Imail 8.12 on NT4 server.

When I run Mail-To-Fax application all I get is a small window ERROR with

old post in the archives on this issue, but it looks like back in the 7.x
versions...it involved a patch which must be requested.

I'm awaiting support from IPSwitch, but I thought I run by the list while I

RE: [IMail Forum] Mail getting rejected to One user...

2004-07-06 Thread Jim Comerford
How does one go about changing the HELO? Does it automatically use the
official hostname or can change that in Imail admin or the registry
somewhere... I have done a quick search but dont seem to find this
anywhere...

571 - MAIL REFUSED - Reverse DNS failed - IP address mismatch.

The implication of this error is that your outgoing IP, 63.147.233.20, fails
the common loopback test that checks to see if there is a seamless
IP-to-PTR-to-A-to-IP mapping. However, 63.147.233.20 indeed loops back
correctly to mail.sbsnet.com and back to 63.147.233.20, meaning that the
remote end is having DNS issues (or is misreporting the reason for the
rejection).

Note that your are HELOing as sbsnet.com, which is NOT in fact the
canonical name for the mail server (its A record points to another
IP): this is not a good practice, and also possible grounds for
rejection.

RE: [IMail Forum] Mail getting rejected to One user...

2004-07-06 Thread Jim Comerford
Thanks for all who answered. Changing the official hostname of the
primary domain to match solved the problem... So apparently they required
the HELO hostname to match exactly.

The message was very clear. Quit guessing.

No, it was not clear. It did not include the IP address of the mailserver,
so if any IP was used other than our best guess, we have to jump through
hoops to figure out the problem. The IP that they use to send to the IMail
mailserver has a perfect reverse DNS entry (all DNS servers have PTR records
pointing to the same hostname, which has an A record that all the DNS
servers agree points back to the same IP). So the ball is in the court of
the people generating that poor error message.

The PTR hostname either

1) was not found or

2) was found, but had no matching A record.

Not so.

Forget about HELO hostname or SMTP greeting hostname or virtual Imail
domains when trying the fix this error, which could be a DNS failure on
their end, not yours, as Sandy said.

Len, I'll agree that the message was very misleading. But the problem is
almost certainly the HELO. I've tried from two separate IPs that have
perfect reverse DNS entries set up, and from one it worked, but not the
other. The only difference I can see is that the HELO was the same for
both, yet it was related to one IP but not the other. So I'm guessing they
are doing an A record lookup of the HELO and seeing how close it is to the
IP, or some other oddball (crazy anti-spam test) stuff.

RE: [IMail Forum] 8.12 custom rules

2004-06-22 Thread Jim Comerford

There was a syntax change in the rules in one of the latest
upgrades... I think the "[" character suddenly had new meaning... if you change
the rules to redirect to a mailbox you will be able to look at your headers to
see what rule is catching all the mail and fix it.

I think if you rely on phrase filters and smtp control access (as I do),
then you are seeing an increase. I open the some of the spam to try and find
phrases I can filter out but those spammers are getting sneakier - the
emails are short and to the point - and many don't use phrases we can safely
filter. I downloaded the phraselist on IPSwitch's site and have since added
many of my own phrases. It stops quite a bit and I get very, very few false
positives... but we are pretty low volume compared to most of the list
folks.

I know this might not be a very difficult problem to figure out, but I just
want to see if I'm missing something obvious. My spam filters in Imail are
increasingly missing more and more spam. Is this just something that could
be resolved by updating my phrase list or blacklist? Because I haven't
really been on top of things on our email server lately (being the lone IT

If this is probably the case, where can I download the most recent spam

RE: [IMail Forum] Increasing number of spam

2004-06-17 Thread Jim Comerford

Search for antispamseeder.exe - the docs are fairly good

Basically you need for forward spam to a spam mailbox somewhere, and
Ideally send non-spam to a not-spam mailbox. Then you can run the
antispamseeder program (I schedule mine to run daily) to read those
mailboxes. I also then automatically delete those mailboxes. You may want
to be monitoring those mailboxes to insure just spam gets into them if you
have some click-happy users submitting to them. You can also set up an
exclude list for the blacklist urls so particular urls don't get in there by
accident.

This will also train the baesian filter for those users... But if you have a
wide userbase or any using foreign languages that may not work well.

[IMail Forum] Preventing Forwarding to AOL

2004-06-08 Thread Jim Comerford
Is there a way to prevent a user from forwarding mail to particular
addresses?

I'm trying to avoid getting blacklisted by AOL after a user forwards
their junkmail there and then clicks AOL's spam button -- thus I'd like
to prevent users from forwarding to AOL.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish this... Something like preventing all
forwarding unless entered by an admin or some type of rule which could
check for forwarding, etc. I saw some discussion of the AOL problem in
the archives, but no real solutions...

Considering I even wrote a one line rule for you to delete all my
messages, I'd love to see how you cry to spammers to take you off their
email lists instead of doing what would take you 5 seconds in a cut and
paste.

I see you have not supplied any answers to anyone on this list this
month - in fact it appears you have only posted 2 answers in the last
90 days. Great contributions!

Ditto that on a search of messages from Joe Wolf and AndyB.

If I or others that try to answer people who your click choose not to
answer and get blown off the list, so be it. If everyone contributed as
little as you, the list would be useless anyway.

I also find return receipts annoying.

More annoying than top posting and out of office auto replies ?
Welch, Tom [EMAIL PROTECTED] with his auto reply is worse I believe.

Can't you just disable your mail client from attempting to answer them

 ?

Yes, but the posting rules have been clearly defined, so either follow
them or enforce them.

One issue mentioned, the 10MB limit, is a default in the web-mail

Otherwise with one domain and no imap usage you should be probably ok.

I plan to install 8.1 and the patches through 8.11 in the next few

for. Was wondering if there was any other advice from the forum.

Have one domain, use POP3 and web mail.
Don't use IMAP, LDAP, or web calendar.

 - Know that new templates need to be installed.
 - Isn't there an issue of max mail default being changed to 10MB or
 was that only Killer Webmail?
 - Will need to review rules for \, [, etc. for negative effects.

Any thing else to watch for would be appreciated.

The message was
deleted. The -NUL indicates it was deleted, probably due to the spam
filtering rules you have in place.

[IMail Forum] Imail gateway for Exchange

2004-05-04 Thread Jim Comerford
I want to be able to use our IMAIL server to act as a gateway for mail
bound for an exchange server, while continuing processing mail with
Imail for other domains.

Currently we have Imail running with one IP-ed domain and several
virtual IP-less domains. These all use the same spam settings. This
part will remain the same.

If I wanted to use the same spam settings, I think I need to just add an
MX record to the domain in question to point to the IMAIL box. The
IMAIL box would have an entry in Hosts file to point to Exchange Box...
Does that sound like all I need?

If however I wanted different spam settings, I would need another IP-ed
domain on Imail box and configure the spam settings there. I'd point
the MX to a host at this new IP and still have entry in Hosts file for
Exchange box. How would I configure the domain within Imail without
using the domain name?

RE: [IMail Forum] iMail 8.1 LDAP Problem

2004-04-22 Thread Jim Comerford
Do call ipswitch - perhaps they will fix if more people call.

I too cannot start LDAP with the standard install or INIT. IPSwitch had
me delete the slapd.conf file and all the folders that contain the user
info and try to INIT... Same results.

Then they had me do the same deletions, but only INIT one domain at a
time... This did seem to work, although INIT on some domains stopped the
ldap service again - but it was restartable... I have not yet done an
INIT on most of the 150 domains on my server... I was hoping to wait for
a fix because that is a tedious process to each one manually.

RE: [IMail Forum] iMail 8.1 LDAP Problem

2004-04-22 Thread Jim Comerford
I just heard more from IpSwitch on this subject and I thought I'd pass
it along They acknowledged that LDAP is a problem and here is a
quote.

is that the current LDAP service is not doing a very good job
of
handling systems with more than 30 or 40 domains. There will be
a
resolution in version 8.11, which should be available in the
next
week or two hopefully

While manually doing INIT LDAP domain by domain worked for me, they
warned about doing an INIT on too many domains... I have only done INIT
on a few and it seems to work. I have about 150 domains on the server -
but few users on most of them.

RE: [IMail Forum] Gigantic mailbox size

2004-04-15 Thread Jim Comerford
I've seen this as a result of corruption... The more you work with it
the bigger it reports. You can try creating a new mailbox and dragging
the messages into it using IMAP - This has worked for me sometimes, but
other times it was one of the messages causing it and the corruption
started anew... In this case you either need to isolate the message and
get rid of it, or just delete the mailbox and create a new one... If you
do isolate the message - try sending it to IPSWITCH -- Maybee they can
prevent it if they know what causes it.

There are 4 mailboxes - main, sent, and two others. The only one
affected by the size/deletion problem is main. Main does not contain

every once in a while, the webmail interface show a users mailbox as
being a ridiculous size. Currently, we have one where webmail reports
 the size as
3gb, while the physical .mbx file is only about 80mb.
When this happens, the user is unable to delete any mail. She checks
the boxes, clicks delete, it loads for a while, then displays
 her mailbox
again without any changes. Any ideas what is going on here?
The quickfix is to delete the mailbox and start over, but
 that isn't an
option in this case.. what can I do?

RE: [IMail Forum] delivery rules failing

2004-04-15 Thread Jim Comerford
You can make several rules to deliver to main mailbox if it matches
followed by a rule that catches anything else and deletes it. Since
imail stops processing as soon as a rule matches it will never get to
the delete rule if the address matches.

Used the AND OR stuff which should not even be in the interface if it
does not work well, but that is another story.

What I did was made a rule for each address instead of one large rule
and it=t made my stuff work, I have not had a problem since.

Good luck.

[IMail Forum] LDAP

2004-04-14 Thread Jim Comerford
I upgraded to 8.1 about 10 days ago. We never used LDAP, and had it off
when upgrading. We did answer YES to convert question. After some
delay, Imail started (without LDAP service running) and was running
normal - before and after hotfixes - until yesterday. We patched
windows with the latest fixes and rebooted. For kicks I tried INIT LDAP
and SYNC LDAP last week with no different results -- it took a while to
do something (5-10 mins at 100% CPU) did not start the service and did
not work. Mail however worked fine as usual and rarely exceeded 40-50%
of CPU.

At that time LDAP tried to restart again (I have since found and removed
the autostart in services) and failed and then machine was running slow.
CPU is now averaging about 80-85% - I don't know if it is related to
LDAP - but it is the first time I have rebooted since immediately after
the install of 8.1

I am running on NT4. Event Viewer Errors below... I'd appreciate any
hints as to where I should look as IMAIL has yet to answer my support
requests

The errors in the event log when starting is:

RE: [IMail Forum] LDAP

2004-04-14 Thread Jim Comerford
I agree that there is some bugs with install. Perhaps because of those
bugs, I cannot get my LDAP service to even start. INIT will not work
because (I am assuming) that the service will not start. Its not the
end of the world for us because we never used it, but we would like to
be able to store the employee names with their e-mail addresses, and the
updgrade now needs LDAP to do that.

I think there are osme bugs with the install routine as too many people
have incomplete messages in the Event Viewers, howver, mine too took a
long time to normlaize after I did the INIT. Now, though, it is working
very very well aside from the incomplete Event Viewer messages.
Hopefully since there are enough of us out there with the tweaked out
logs, Ipswitch will make a HF. But since it doesn't actually stop the
services from working I doubt it's a priority.

normal - before and after hotfixes - until yesterday. We patched
windows with the latest fixes and rebooted. For kicks I tried INIT
LDAP and SYNC LDAP last week with no different results -- it took a
while to do something (5-10 mins at 100% CPU) did not start the
service and did not work. Mail however worked fine as usual and
 rarely exceeded 40-50% of CPU.

At that time LDAP tried to restart again (I have since found and
removed the autostart in services) and failed and then machine was
running slow. CPU is now averaging about 80-85% - I don't know if it
is related to LDAP - but it is the first time I have rebooted since
immediately after the install of 8.1

I am running on NT4. Event Viewer Errors below... I'd appreciate any
hints as to where I should look as IMAIL has yet to answer my support
 requests

The errors in the event log when starting is:

 Followed by ONE instance of

RE: [IMail Forum] delivery rules failing

I'm not a rule expert, But it looks to me like

It MUST match:

 -AND---

!F!~(catherine|donovan|melanie|tina)@(mail\.visitcanada\.com|visitcanada

And since it cannot match BOTH of those it will never bounce... Dir you
want to replace the !AND! With an !OR!

I'm having a problem with the delivery rules only partially working.

RE: [IMail Forum] 8.05 Whitelisting not working

2004-04-05 Thread Jim Comerford
Title: Message

Check
the order of processing in 8.05... the "whitelist" feature did not work as one
would expect -- some checks were done before the whitelist was checked... This
has been changed in 8.1 to work more like one would expect a "whitelist" to
work. I dont remember the order off hand but it is in the archives and/or
documentation.

I was wondering if anyone else has
an idea why my whitelisting isnt working:

Ive put the whitelist into the
root, Ive put it into the folder for our domain, and still it is not allowing
whitelisted addresses/domains to slip through without being filtered.
Everything is listed as it should be in the spam control email control panels
in Imail, but they still are getting filtered improperly.

We received approx 550 emails this
weekend into the spam filter box, 26 false positives. All but one of the false
positives were whitelisted addresses/domains. I know it isnt much spam,
and I could have lived with the single false positive but for the fact that
whitelisted emails are going through the spam filters. It makes me wonder if
  the products working properly.

[IMail Forum] Logo in templates

2004-04-01 Thread Jim Comerford
I am new to the classic templates due to the upgrade... I am trying to
change the logo which appears on the login screen.

My setup is to run only one domain on an IP and all other domains are
virtual.

I replaced the file logo.gif in the Imail/web directory with a new
logo.

If I login to any of the VIRTUAL domains login screens... I get the new
logo, when I logon to the domain with the IP, the login screen shows the
IPSWITCH logo... Can anyone point me in right direction.

RE: [IMail Forum] Statistical Filtering Settings?

2004-03-22 Thread Jim Comerford
Title: Message

It
works best if every user sends it an equal number of "good" and "spam"
mail. To read up on it search for "antispamseeder".

Basically you need to create a MBX file for "GOOD" mail and one for
"SPAM"... then you need to run the antispamseeder on those files to
"train" it. We use the default settings and regularly "train" with new
spam after an initial "training" with good mail.

Depending upon your user base you may need to "train" it more. For
example we have foreign language clients which we had to disable it for due to
high false positives. We also have a client involved with mortgages who
needed to "train" theirs with lots of good mail to avoid false
positives.

I sent a message the other day
  about the Statistical Filtering Settings
and what is the best way to set
this up. Someone said I have to train it for every user. I dont see how
that is done in email. That would be a look of work for over 300+ users. I set
it up for the following settings in IMAIL
  ADMIN:

  Probability new word is spam
  80%
An Email is spam when its
  calculated prob exceeds 85%
Max # of works to use
  15

I am using the files for phrases
and words etc that come from ipswitch. Are these the best settings and
if not what do U need to do? Its catching some spam and letting others
  through.

If this is a non-working feature, wouldn't they disable it instead of
giving a weird error?

[IMail Forum] List - Unauthorized poster...

2004-03-10 Thread Jim Comerford
I have a mailing list which has an authorized poster list.

One individual who is on the authorized poster list has sent messages to
the list before. Today he had one returned indicating he was an
unauthorized poster. I checked and his e-mail address IS in the
Authorized Poster list, but is lower case and in logs it shows upper
case...

Log entries:
03:10 09:28 334 LST membership message from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
03:10 09:28 334 LST [EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]
Article rejected, un-authorized poster of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The authorized poster list contains: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
He is also listed as a member of the list.

Should CASE matter?, any other Ideas?

What is the best way to have multiple domains send email to the same
place? Imail lets you have a host name and an ailias, but I have some
people that have 4 or more domains and they want all the email to go to
the same place.

RE: [IMail Forum] Spanish words flagged as spam

2004-03-08 Thread Jim Comerford
We had so many problems with this for our foreign language clients, that
we stopped using baesian filtering on those domains. You can teach the
filter spanish by using the antispamseeder.exe program... You need to
feed it both Good e-mail and SPAM... Search docs on antispamseeder they
explain it fairly well.

I am having a problem that one of our users is increasingly
communicating
with clients and friends in Spanish. The IMail AntiSpam filters are
triggering on these new words and flagging them as spam which raises
the
score and flags the message.

Anybody know of a fix for this? A Spanish language dictionary for IMail?
