RE: [IMail Forum] (OT?) Using DNS blacklists with IIS
David I'm guessing you are behind a firewall, I hope so. Why not go in and block the address range at the firewall and leave it at that. I've had some pretty nasty people do the same thing you're seeing and ended up at this. I had some luck with declude and message sniffer, but these sort of folks are pretty agile and hard to stop. Mine were from China. John -Original Message- From: imail_forum-ow...@list.ipswitch.com [mailto:imail_forum-ow...@list.ipswitch.com] On Behalf Of David E. Using DNS blacklists with IIS Lately, I've had a rash of attackers from Nigeria, who have acquired (through whatever means) legitimate logins and passwords for my Imail users. They log in, send out a couple thousand emails, and log out. There are no failed logins, so even an over-zealous account lockout policy wouldn't work in this instance. They only send to five or ten recipients at a time, so they avoid most of the rate-limiting features. But through the magic of cut-and-paste, they're able to get a few thousand messages an hour sent out. All the attackers come from IP space listed on ng.blackholes.us, and I'm willing to annoy any legitimate users of mine that might be vacationing in Lagos. Anyone know of a way to apply DNS blacklists to a Web site in IIS, comparable to mod_dnsbl for Apache? Re: [IMail Forum] Latest Imail version ?
Marc We did the upgrade a week ago, It went very smoothly. Two things I've seen 1 When using Firefox, the Received, and Size do not show up unless you page down at least once. it's then fine until you move to another folder. You repeat the process, and it displays fully. MS is fine. 2 The new calendar does not have many of the features the Previous Version has. Some users of web calendar may have issues. You need to evaluate before you change. The Previous version is still there, but not sure for how long. I have no proof, but the web response time seem quicker. Re: [IMail Forum] Moving to a new Server
Kevin I'm on the road and do not have access to all my stuff but I think there 2 programs to run one convert.exe and the other wgscvt.exe. If you go into regedit and look at the imail trees, you can figure out pretty much how that is set up. there are two things to export from the old box to the new one, Both are in the Domains portion. one is the virtual portion and the other is the domain data. If you move it all there's no problem, if you move them in sections, be sure to move the matching set, the virtual and the domain name part. If your doing the update on the old machine first, it's easy, copy the whole tree and move it. there is a good kb article on that. I also got an assist from the ipswitch folks. I had our backup mail server spool incoming mail while I did the move and once we were up on the new box it flowed in quite nicely. Don't forget to move the mail folders from the old box to the new one. Since you have a new box, fire up the new version and play with if till your comfortable before upgrading the old one. Look out for some impact from your web users, we were using killerwebmail and the new version is slower. People bitched about it, but for the most part are used to it now. Todd We have a very similar situation. Same user mix. We did the upgrade and moved to a different box at the same time We moved to a dual intel pentium pro 2.8 box with 2 gig memory. I have seen no difference in POP or IMAP performance. The Webmail side however is slow. I'm not an IIS jock, so maybe we havent tweeked it, but I dread having to use it. I've taken to using portableapps version of thunderbird and use IMAP rather than Web. Mac users will whine! Re: [IMail Forum] Imail queue keeps flooding!!
Nick I had this happen once, fire up the Imail log analyzer in your imail folder, run it on your sysmmdd.txt log for the day this issue came up. Check everything and run it. Look for way out of bounds senders. this could be anything, but check smtp senders, but could be anything. With luck you should see some user with high outgoing numbers, pull the user up and disable the account, or change the password. If they belong to you I'd make sure it was a stolen user id and pw and not an infected user computer. [IMail Forum] web sign on
We are running 2006.2 on a windows 2003 box I have one client with one customer who has to re-log on every 2 or 3 min using MS internet explorer to get to web mail. Everyone else is fine. I can't seem to find what setting to change for her. She's driving me crazy and no one else is having the problem. Does this ring a bell with anyone, any help would be appreciated. John

It will turn a temporary block into a permanent block. If you don't use IMail's access list for permanent blocking at all, you can delete the .acc file whenever you start/restart Imail, that will delete ALL blocks. If you have the intermittent problem of people being unable to send mail, then there could be many reasons, but certainly, the dictionary attach feature is one of them. If that happens, go the the Imail log file to the time when the problem occurred and then search backward for that IP address to see prior error messages associated with that IP address up to the point where it last worked. If you see IMail responding with a 5xx message, then see if the message text indicates that it was due to too many invalid recipients or other errors - which would suggest that it's the dictionary attack featue. If it's one of your clients and they are using SMTP Auth, then I suggest you contact IPswitch and open a problem report that there MUST be an option to exempt SMTP AUTH users from the Dictionary Attack (and other anti-spam) feature. You can turn off the Dictionary Attack feature by setting the Max Invalid Recipients, Soft Error, Hard Error, Minutes to Deny and Error Delay to their documented default values, "0". (on the SMTP service page) This will automatically block IP after a certain number of invalid users sent to. Careful with the "auto-blocking" feature of IMail - because it has a serious flaw (it's been on their to-do). Basically, if you specify that certain IP addresses should automatically be blocked for xx minutes and then be reset, then you'll eventually end up with these temporary blocks becoming PERMANENT. Some of them are likely going to be big providers and you'll end up with a blacklist of your most active SMTP partners! The problem occurs when the Imail server has to be restarted (I don't know if it's just the service or the entire hardware). Basically it LOSES the "time to expire" information that apparently is kept someplace transient - as a result, any IP address that supposedly was temporarily blocked will never be removed! Worst, if people are having trouble reaching your server and you think, oh, let me restart that will "reset" everything. WRONG! BAD! Just the opposite happens. Restarting actually will just aggravate the problem my making even more temporary blocks permanent! The other big flaw is, that you should be able to "whitelist" any SMTP AUTH connections from the auto-block mechanisms. It's not that unusual that one of our clients is trying to send email to a co-workers and because of a new email software, new employee, new PC etc they misspell the address -- or because an ex-employee is on someone's "list" and they do a "reply all". After a few emails, their gateway/router is BLOCKED! Now, these emails end up sitting in the "outbox" and Outlook will keep retrying every few minutes - and this client will only be able to send a few mails every half hour until he's blocked again and switch providers because "your mail is so slow!". Clearly, if we have an SMTP AUTH user, we don't expect that person to need to conduct Dictionary Attacks and if they do, it's easy to address the problem, simply by disabling that user (e.g., password change). IPswitch's argument is, that SMTP AUTH could be broken into and be used for SPAM. Sure, that's true, but has nothing to do with Auto-Blocking. If an SMTP AUTH user start dictionary attacks against Hotmail, AOL, YAHOO and the like through MY server, then IMail's auto-block won't take, because all those email addresses are THIRD PARTY addresses where IMail doesn't detect invalid addresses! [IMail Forum] Upgrade to 2006.2 and hardware move
Morning all I spent the weekend firing up a new W 2003 server and installing Imail 2006.21 on it. I think I've delt with most of the installation issues. I would like to move clients over a domain at a time w/o doing using the technique of upgrading the old 8.22 machine and copying over the registery and Imail folder, as I want to go slow on this process. I've looked in the archives and I havent been able to find a best practices approach. With more history now, does anyone feel there is a best approach to moving a domain with all the clients? And if so what would the steps be. [IMail Forum] Account move
Good afternoon. I have a client who is moving their mail accounts in house. I'm running Imail 8.22. They will have exchange. I'm would be very interested in any thoughts as to how to do this with the least amount of pain and suffering. I do not need to provide them with user names or passwords. They have stated that when they call, all mailboxes will be empty. So I'm looking for the best way to not trap any mail after the switch, and proper redirection of any mail coming in right after the change. As well as any issues you may have experienced. Re: [IMail Forum] Temporarily disabling a mail domain

Re: [IMail Forum] Comcast issues
Chuck Not sure if this is the same issue, but last week I began having problems with verizon then sbc then att. I don't know if Comcast is with that bunch, but. They started blocking on my email address domain. By that I mean in Outlook, for example, the user entered email address. I know this sounds stupid, but have the user change his email address to a different domain, that can get through and try sending again. If that goes through, you have to get a Comcast user to allow mail from your domain. Verizon never blocked our IP just the domain name in the return address. We had some with no problme, others blocked, with everyone on the same IP address. Good luck, took me a week to figure out. Tripp I've made some progress, I discovered one cannot use the ISP spam submittal link when this condtion occurs. You have to get a verizon/gte customer to say mail from a blocked domain cant be received. Verizon replys that they will investigate. It appears they unblock the domain. [IMail Forum] Verizon problems
Morning all Last week, I found I was unable to send to a Verizon customer. I was getting 550 You are not allowed to send mail:sv5pub.verizon.net I submitted our mail server IP address to see if we were blacklised and got a reply back that we were not. I then switched to using a Charter SMPT server and got a similar response. I next tried using remote access, web mail on the our Imail server so there would be no record of a dynamic IP address in the header and sent another message. It timed out this morning with 421 SMTP service not available, closing transmission channel and terminating after the Imail max tries timed out. Does anyone have any thoughts, as we speak, none of our customers are now able to email anyone at Verizon. Thanks for any help. Kevin I just cleared the cache, and got the same 550 message. I've also tried sending using my charter smtp server, and gotten the same results. John -- Original Message -- From: Kevin Bilbee [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2006 15:52:11 -0700 I see relay.verizon.net as the MX. I do not know why you are sending to the *pub.verizon.net records. The problem may be on your end? Clear your DNS cache on the imail machine and resend the message. RE: [IMail Forum] Verizon problems
Greg I took out the SPF record this morning hoping it was causing the problem I can get a softfail as if I send a message from home the ip address can change. 2 days ago i added my home ip address as an originating ip and got a pass, but that didn't solve the problem. I don't know what to do about the non matching ptr record. We hava a class C range from twtelecom and I don't know why they are listed on the DNS lookup. John -- Original Message -- From: Greg Kesler [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2006 19:11:54 -0400 John: The email headers from your message indicate the following: Received: from mail.web-partners.com [206.190.82.18] by list.ipswitch.com with ESMTP A DNS lookup of [206.190.82.18] shows a **NON MATCHING** PTR of: PTR, 206-190-82-18.static.twtelecom.net. Many providers will DEVNULL email from systems that fail on PTR lookups. Your domain, web-partners.com, also does not have a SPF record. Not having a valid PTR (big / huge strike) and no SPF record ( minor / large strike) could be reason(s) enough for companies to reject your email. Here is a link to the SPF wizzard that will help you add SPF records to your DNS zone. http://www.openspf.org/wizard.html?mydomain=web-partners.com As with any link in email, copy and paste the URL do not click on it. RE: [IMail Forum] Verizon problems
John In the log, it connects to: SMTP-(0df50189eaa5) Connect Verizon.net [206.46.232.11:25] (1) That seems to resolve to relay.verizon.net and the gets passed to : SMTP-(0df50189eaa5) 220 sv15pub.verizon.net MailPass Upon coming home, I switched from my Imail server to charter, and still got the 550. I then went into Outlook and changed my email address to my Charter email and it has not bounced back. Sadly my recipient is not available to tell me if she got it. That makes me think my domain name and my customer names are blacklisted by Verizon. Even thou they claim not to have blacklisted the IP address. This may come in handy for others. This evening I did the following researching my 550 messages from Verizon.net and gte.net. 1 Smtp out web-partners, sending email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] 550 error 2 Smtp out charter.net, sending email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] 550 error 3 Smtp out charter.net, sending email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] SUCCESS 4 Smtp out web-partners, sending email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] SUCCESS It looks like if all I do is go into Outlook, change my email address Verizon takes the mail? I don't get this, I know I'm not very technical, but apparently the easiest thing to spoof is simply changed and the mail is delivered. I don't get it. [IMail Forum] Time stamps and Daylight Savings Time.
Good Morning I'm running 8.22 on a Windows 2003 server. I went through the archives and did not come up with a solution to my issue. The time stamps are wrong on the email we handle. I tried setting the clock back an hour and that worked until it synced up the next time, I also tried setting the GMT offset off by an hour, and while the header is correct, the time received that the user sees is still off. Is there a patch, or workaround for this? I see a dll for 2006 but none for 8.x or earlier, and I'm just not ready to upgrade to 2006. Thanks for any help. RE: [IMail Forum] Time stamps and Daylight Savings Time.
Kevin I had not rebooted or restarted services since daylight savings time. I have 2003 set up to auto adjust for DST. After restarting services, things seem to be fine. I really have no clue if that was it or not. It's got the correct times now in both the header and the displayed time in outlook. Re: [IMail Forum] killer webmail help m e pls, I don´t attached files
I seem to recall there are at least 2 places to set max message size, and perhaps 3. One at the virtual server attributes page on the general tab. One on the Services, Web Messaging, Web Messaging Server tab. And there may be one under localhost services, but I can't remember. It may have to be set on IP server before being set on the virtual one. I think the hierarchy is IP, Virtual, Web. If you can normally send large files, but not with web messaging, check the web messaging tab, I'll bet it's set less than the server attributes page. Hope this helps. RE: [IMail Forum] User Filters
Getting smarter I figured out the string below can be added to the filter file directly. It matched what I'd added through web mail and admin. However if I try the test screen, it fails. In the test screen, a single entry works, xx or a single entry for yy however if i have xx OR yy Nothing I try passes the test. Perhaps I'm not putting the test string in correctly? RE: [IMail Forum] Moving IMail from NT 4.0 to Windows Server 2003
Travis I did this a few months ago and had no problems. The only thing not brought across that I found was the daily email notification of email sent, received et al. I simply added the postmaster email address and all was well. I also under steps 8 and 9, I deleted both keys before importing, it's not clear on step 9, but that's what I did and it seemed to work fine. I did the move in about 20 min. with maybe 4 gig of folder junk. Be sure to patch both to the same level. Leave both offline until you test the new one from the console. If it's not working simply plug the old server back on the network. If it works plug the new one onto the network. I felt very safe with the knowledge I could go back to the old one at any time up to the point you go live with the new box. Enjoy your weekend. Darrell We have a winner. I added the winsockreset into the declude.cfg We still had problem, I then found that I had a corrupted filter entry in one of my filter files, it was causing declude to crash and while it would restart on occasion it would corrupt the udp packet, dns connectivity was lost and we were toast. Is this a virtual server? If so, don't forget setting 0 as unlimited size at the virtual server with the parent ip server set at say 10 meg. will limit the size of the virtual server to 10 meg. regardless as to any value greater than 10 or set to 0. I cannot send using Outlook or Outlook Express thru Imail 1 but I can if using the Web Interface. I also cannot telnet to Imail 1. I get an error message that port 25 is being blocked. Now, my other server, Imail 2, can send emails just fine. I can telnet to it without issue. Let me also note that Imail 1 is my hosting mail server and is used by hundreds of folks. No one has contacted me in any way to complain which leads me to assume that its me. Ive scanned my system for spyware and such and the only thing it found was a bunch of cookies and WildTangent, which I removed. Ive tried disabling my McAfee AV softwares email scanner, Ive rebooted my system, all to no avail. While I am running XP Pro I am not running SP2 and do not have the XP firewall active. Any thoughts on troubleshooting this? Thanks! Troy D. Hilton Serveon, Inc. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 302-529-8640
RE: [IMail Forum] WAY OT: Portable warehouse computer carts
John We did this for both our forklifts and pallet jacks. Buy a 12 volt deep discharge golf cart or marine battery. Wire a cigarette lighter socket to it. Get a automobile charger/power supply for the laptop, and your done. Works all day, trickle charge it overnight. We've in the past also added an inverter to power mobile printers. Put it all in a box and attach to whatever. You can buy the parts at Costco and be done if a couple of hours. Wire, cig. adapter, inverter, batt, box. Not elegant but it's worked for years. RE: [IMail Forum] Accept.txt
It's working as configured. The test message sent to you is local, (not relayed). Cold fusion has an email generator that creates the message. It forwards the message to imail, if local ok, if not imail thinks it's being asked to relay to the non local user. If you want to do that add the ip address of the cold fusion server to imail. RE: [IMail Forum] Accept.txt
Kathy Hang in there. Send yourself a message through the CF page. Open the header, look for the ip address at the top Showing where it came from. This will be one of the ip addresses on the server you use to host the web sites and the one cf uses to send messages out. Add this ip address to mail relay options. Go to: Imail administrator Localhost Services SMTP SMTP Security Put the dot on Relay mail for: Click on the addresses box on the right Add the ip address Apply Stop and restart SMTP Try your remote address. Remember that a worm or other bad thing could then relay to the imail server and there ya go. Declude hijack could help. BTW, the logs will show you which IP Cold Fusion is using for the email - You won't have to list all the IP's on which IIS is listening, only the ONE CF is using for outbound email. RE: [IMail Forum] Migrating to Collaboration Suite
I'd try this. Move your instance of 8.05 to the new box. This is a well documented event. Then upgrade the new instance of 8.05 to Collaboration Suite. This would not take a great deal of time and would offer you an opportunity to revert back to the old still in tact server, or pause at the move state and then do the upgrade at a later date. I'd dry-lab this on a test box first. I just moved an 8.15 instance from an old NT box to a new 2003 Server. It went as documented. So well in fact I worried for about a week that someting was wrong. Very easy. There are notes in the move document on how to change drives and directories. http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19980116-JB11.htm John -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Brian Hruska Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 8:34 AM To: IMail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com Subject: [IMail Forum] Migrating to Collaberation Suite I'm need to backup the domains, users, passwords, etc. from my server running iMail 8.05 and move them to a new server which is running the Collaberation Suite.
