[IMail Forum] WAY OT: AOL vs. Network Solutions?

2005-09-29 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
In light of the recent discussion about AOL, here are some fun
questions/situations:

In a fight between AOL and Network Solutions, who would win?

Would AOL take over Network Solutions, or visa versa?

AOL + Network Solutions = SOL?

AOL + Network Solutions + George Wells = Big Brother?

AOL + Network Solutions = Hal9000's fantasy dream come true? (Not even Dave
could stop it then.)

AOL + Network Solutions = Americas Network of Offline Solutions?

If Al Gore bought both AOL and Network Solutions, could he then correctly
claim he owns the Internet?

After the marriage of AOL and Network Solutions, their first product
launched soon after is the Retro Encabulator which will bring a new meaning
to At the speed of the Internet. http://media.ebaumsworld.com/retro.wmv

Okay, who's trying the Zimbra first and going to tell us about it?

Yes, if you put them into the overflow they will be scanned again.

NOTE: Only Q files can go into the overflow directory. The D file goes into
the spool directory.

The overflow directory is a feature of Declude 1.7x through 2.x

Have Declude 2.x (waiting on 3). Almost 100% of these are caught due to
banned extensions. Would Declude anti-virus run again if these were
placed
in the overflow? That would re-catch them.

If you have Declude 1.x, you can move it to the overflow directory
instead.
Declude will pick it up, run it through filtering again, and hand it back
to
IMail for immediate processing. Since this goes through filtering again,
it
may not be desired unless you have tweaked filters so it won't be caught
 again.

If you still want to use the spool directory, then the timer between Queue
Manager runs has to elapse before IMail will deliver it. I believe the
minimum time between runs for Queue Manager is 10 minutes.

You may be able to call SMTP32 directly for immediate delivery, but I
haven't tried that. 5 minutes on average has been fine for our users.
From
the manual, it looks like you can call it as follows:

 smtp32 full_path_to_queue_filename

 Darin.

After moving a held message back into the spool directory, I would like
force Imail to immediately attempt a delivery. Does anyone have anything
set up for this? If not, am I correct that I would to incorporate
SMTP32.EXE in whatever I come up with?

from my system to one of my Imail servers

Hello
All,

Ive
got 2 Imail servers here (7.15 HF2) and starting today Ive been having
problems sending emails through one of my Imail servers, Ill call it
Imail
1. I cannot send using Outlook or Outlook Express thru Imail 1 but I can
if using the Web Interface. I also cannot telnet to Imail 1. I get an error
message that port 25 is being blocked. Now, my other server, Imail 2, can send
emails just fine. I can telnet to it without issue. Let me also note that Imail
1 is my hosting mail server and is used by hundreds of folks. No one has contacted
me in any way to complain which leads me to assume that its me.
Ive scanned my system for spyware and such and the only thing it found
was a bunch of cookies and WildTangent, which I removed. Ive tried
disabling my McAfee AV softwares email scanner, Ive rebooted my
system, all to no avail. While I am running XP Pro I am not running SP2 and do
not have the XP firewall active.

Any
thoughts on troubleshooting this?

Thanks!

Well, that is my thought but I wanted to see if there was a package out
there at a reasonable price.

My other worry is how long does the APC battery last being constantly used
and recharged? Generally speaking, from what I know, the battery life is
about 3-5 years and mainly depends on how many times it is on battery and
for how long. That is also the reason I only do a time calibration once
within the first year. Now, if those batteries will hold up to repeated use
and charge, then I can go with that.

In the old days, relay for IP was considered safe. No longer, it is now
considered open to spammers if you are including your IPs used for dialup,
DSL whatever.

The reason is as you are experiencing users computers become infected with
viruses and spamware and such and become spammers. You are then allowing
that spammer to freely relay.

each day. Slow receive, duplicate emails errors on receive on multiple

My questions are, is it safe for me to upgrade from 8.05 to 8.21 direct or
do I need to somehow get all of the upgrades in between first?

What effects is this going to have on Declude Antivirus and Spam filters

Maybe you do not understand what that
setting is for. That setting is for outbound e-mail to the Internet, if you
want another server to handle the e-mail communications with the Internet and
off load that work from the Imail server.

Controlling outbound e-mail per domain
is not possible, AFAIK.

Under the IMail SMTP services, you have the option of
Gateway Options - Send all remote mail to gateway
where this option will apply to all the domains but what if I want only a one
or two domains to have this option and not all. The reason is, I have a another

the rest of the domain to use another gateway (gateway B).

When I looked at the log file from Exchange, it is showing the to

The only thing I see strange is that Eforms Admin is a very old account

However, that does not explain why the email would have went to that

Oh what a day from hell.. How do you pick a good DNS server? I
had one from Verio that I've used for the last couple years
 161.58.158.113
Ipswitch Techs had me try one of there's while we were testing all
the various problems. Worked well with theirs so I assumed that mine
was not too good... I called Verio where my servers are hosted and
they could not tell me much information about the DNS IP I posted
above. They suggested that because it was a cache DNS server it looks
like it may not always be available and maybe retired soon... Quite
frankly I think the Gal knew less than I did about the server... None
the less I tracerouted to the primary dns servers (ns1 and
ns2 .DN.net) and used these in the SMTP area of iMail 8.21
These worked poorly and allowed my queue to grow to over 100 emails
and stay at that point . Restarting the SMTP server would clear half
of them but then back to the same state... People started calling
because there were errors such as 553 Requested action not taken:
Relaying not permitted or 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list
of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)... I switched back to the IP above and
it immediately cleared the cache and now hovers around 7 or 8 emails
pending. Why does one DNS server IP work better than others?
207.153.206.126 and 161.58.158.45 (bound to ns1 and 2 as mentioned
above) failed to perform worth while.

You would think a company like Verio would have great DNS servers? Am
I missing something? I'm thinking of moving to Rackspace at the end
of the month and hope they can help.

 Steve

I am thinking it may be no change as Imail just sends the items to
port 514 at the destination IP from a random port, so in essence the
NIC is still processing the session, just not putting on to the
  physical layer.

If you are using the loopback address (127.0.0.1) as your destination,
the source address is also 127.0.0.1, so the packet does not touch the
NIC. You do not even need a NIC in the system to use the loopback
 address.

[IMail Forum] OT: Syslog and the TCP stack

2005-09-06 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
Right now, I have Kiwi syslog on my Imail server for logging all of the
Imail items.

If I move the Kiwi syslog to another server, would I increase, decrease or
no change of work on the Imail server NIC?

I am thinking it may be no change as Imail just sends the items to port 514
at the destination IP from a random port, so in essence the NIC is still
processing the session, just not putting on to the physical layer.

RE: [IMail Forum] T and D files piling up

2005-08-25 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
Jumping in here late and not reading all the posts, but T files are not
orphans per se', rather incomplete transmissions. As such, Imail never told
the sending server or client that that message was received OK and
gracefully ended the session. As such, the sending server or client will
retry to send until successful.

Then I suggest you move to another email package right away.

orphaned should never be a term used by an email system... The messages

It's a

It's yet another reason why we need to get away from iMail. Anyway, as

If I told a tech that these legitimate messages are in the queue, that

Why don't you try calling Imail, if you have a

The maintenance agreement was a joke... The promise of 'upgrades' was
lame,

When I have found re-occuring infections
and rebuilds were the last resort, I would spend the time and go agoogling for
every process I would find running. Eventually, I would track down everything

access to all except a special user created only for that purpose. I would do
the same thing in the registry.

Yes, Ive booted to Safe Mode many

spyware removals before on desktop systems and have had good success but in
this case it seems as though the servers are reinfecting each other,
virus-wise. The spyware just wont go away.

Have you tried scanning
it with the following apps in Safemode to keep most of them from actually
running?

This order process of free apps has always worked for me even with
heavily infected consumer machines used by teenage children. YMMV

I run the applications in this order. You will need to boot with Safemode
with networking to ensure access to the 'net to get the updates signatures for
the software. The demo install Webroot is a one shot deal on
getting the updates so I normally run it last and hopefully can boot normally
by this point.

1. Ad-Aware
2. Spybot
3. Microsoft Anti-Spyware
4. Webroot Spysweeper
5. Hi-Jack This to check for other nasties that are still in startup mode.

Finally I run the free ActiveScan from Panda. The free version will kill
viruses but not Spyware. It will however identify the culprits and the detail
report will show you exactly where they are so that you can manually remove
them.

While
my software will detect the spyware it cannot completely clean it so the apps
become active after a reboot.

Im
considering a server rebuild but I really dont want to take my only

to simply reinstall the OS and perhaps some patches without having to totally
reconfigure the server or use the Compaq SmartStart app? Im betwixt a hard

There is nothing in the Imail logs.
There is not firewall between us and the users, they are basically local to my

I dont think it is DNS because I
had them use the IP and the same problem happens. Its almost like
the never reach the server, but it didnt start until I upgraded.

The SMTP error is Unable to find the

What logs would you like? The ISA
logs because when I checked the logs on the server as soon as they get the
error or minutes later there is nothing there.

 Hi,

I'm running Imail Version 8.10, with Declude Antispam. Symantec is running
as an AV in the background.

I've got some messages which seem to get to the server but I don't know
where they go after that. I have appended the logs below.

After the messages go into the spool they seem to disappear completely
from
 the log.

The only special setting about this user is that one message was sent to a
nobody alias. The second was sent
to an alias that then forwards to an email address on the same domain. The
message is not in the spool nor in the
spam folder. The AV did not block it either.

Hi all.

 We recently upgraded from

2003 Web Edition)and are seeing some bizarre behavior. The HELO
message from the server is a bunch of * characters and a few random 2s and 0s.
Additionally, the server refuses to accept the AUTH command (returns a 502)
regardless of Disable SMTP Auth setting. I was, however, able
to get AUTH to work by using theExtra
 Port
mumbo jumbo, but that is not a realsolution. Tried uninstalling
8.21 and reinstalling 8.20 with the same result. This is a brand new Dell
server with no prior Imail install. I spent over 2 hours scouring the
archive to no avail... Any thoughts?

the 587 blues

I found a solution to the problem of
changing everyone to usingport 587. I'msure that most of you on
this list have read the earlier messages and knows what I'm talking about. I
also understand that this fix is not for everyone but I'mposting it here
for those that eventually would be interested in other solutions than to change
all their users to use port 587.

The only requirement is that you need to
use a mail gateway such as IMGate. I have confirmed this workaroundon my
test box and with IMail tech thatthis works.

1. In ImailAdministration go to SMTP
-Security and change thelistening port for IMail from 25 to for
exampleport 12345

2. In the registry go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/../SMTP/Parameters andchange the ExternalPort from
the default 587 to 25. You must be using version 8.20 to be able to do this.

Viola!You now have an Imail
server that isauthenticating ALL incoming mail on port 25!

3. Inyour border router or firewall
disable accessto port 12345 (the port you changed Imail to listening on).

4. Change IMGate torelay mail to
Imail on port 12345

This is what you have now:

1. Allmail - spam orlegit -
using your MX record will send mail to IMGate on port 25 which will send it to
Imail on port 12345

2. All your users will be able to send mail
using mail.yourdomain.com on port 25 because they are authenticating.

3. All Sasser infected worm boxes on cable
and DSL connections AND spammers targeting your IMail directly will be rejected
because they can't authenticate.

And you don't have to change ANYmail
configuration for any of your users as long as they typically use SMTP AUTH
already.

 I have RTFM.
 Please read my post.
It has nothing to with who can send out mail.

I don't want Imail to receive mail to ANY users if that mail is NOT
sent from a trusted IP or authenticated.

There is no way of doing this AFAIK unless we switch all users to use
port 587 and block access to port 25 to Imail from the Internet.

Imail should only accept mail from trusted IP addresses and

No checkbox necessary. If you have relay for addresses (as
  you stated
you did) then you ALREADY REQUIRE authentication except for the IP
  addresses listed. RTFM.

Would it work if I change the alternate authentication port 587 to
 25
  in the registry?

For what purpose? SMTP AUTH ALREADY WORKS ON PORT 25!!! It
  always has.
Port 587 is there specifically for those clients that can't connect
 on
port 25 due to their ISP's blocking that port outbound.

Here's the thing, in your original post, you described your setup as
this: relay for addresses (good), port 587 enabled (good),
  but then you
thought you needed control access, but you didn't. Just relay for
addresses and port 587 will get you EXACTLY what you want.
  No one will
be able to send any mail, no matter what port they use, unless they
authenticate (port 25 OR port 587), or unless they are in your
 trusted
  IP range (port 25 only).

  Once again, please RTFM.

It would but it doesn't change the fact (for me) that it's a

Why should we have to go through all this work to move every
single user to port 587 when all that is needed is a checkbox
in Imail that says Enable strict authentication on port 25).
IOW, Imail should only accept mail from trusted IP addresses
   and authenticated users on port
25 when this checkbox is selected. How hard would it be for
Ipswitch to implement this? I bet you can whip this out in an
afternoon. You already have all the ingredience. In this
scenario we don't have to do a single change to any users and
no-one will be able to spew spam directly to Imail. There
would also be no need to SPF since those sender would neither
authenticate nor send from a trusted IP.

Would it work if I change the alternate authentication port
587 to 25 in the registry? What would happen?

Router with IMGate in the DMZ
IMail server on internal network
IMail relays for internal network and requires auth on port 587
Outbound mail to gateway (IMGate machine)

FW Rules:
all external port 25 traffic to DMZ
no external port 25 to internal
Port 587 allowed to IMail
Your users are given port 587 (set to require auth) for

I believe this will accomplish what you are wanting

I too would suggest that there is no list
that should be trusted for immediate deletion. EVERY LIST OUT THERE will
give you false positives sometimes. If you only use Imail's filtering
(IOW, if you don't use a third-party spam filtering app), the best thing to do
to avoid false positives is to just flag the email with a header and use Imail
rules to reroute flagged messages to a spam mailbox (as was previously
suggested, I believe). Even if you are OK with the occasional false
positives, I STILL wouldn't delete based on a single test. Don't delete
unless it matches 2 tests. You'll still delete some false-positives, but
not as many.

our customers have the potential to loose customers bu deleting mail when
spamcops automated system blocks yahoo or wanadoo.fr for a few hours.

I think it is bad advise to reccomend to
any one to delete on a single test unless that test is completely controlled by
the mail server administrator.

Just this past weekend I had 5 business
emails flaged as spam by CBL that were delisted by the time I checked to see
why the were listed. If I deleted on just that one test then the buseness would
have been lost the emails were from potential customers. That just happen to be
on the same ISP mail server.

This one I'm not sure I believe. It seems to me that [EMAIL PROTECTED]
is
intended to be mailbox-name @ host, not @ domain. I have aways
understood
that using somplace.com is simply a convient shortcut, but that properly
you
are trying to specify a mailbox name at a host location. Perhaps this is
one of those usages that has evolved over the years?

I am not (not even close to being) a DNS expert, but some of the other
replies posted do not fit with my understanding of the DNS setup.
The host
mail is not a subdomain, it's a host. And the record that has 'no
 name'
is a root host, but it's still a host, and not a subdomain.

But when mail is sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] it is assumed to

What

   There is only
one domain/zone, and that's salemradiology.com. The rest are records
 for

 through
all the records in this zone, looking for any MX records, and
 identifying
those as mail servers; instead, it only looked for a root host mail
server. It's kind of like assuming that a web site name must start
with
 a
www.; that's the common usage, but it is not required.

See my above comment. When using http://www.salemradiology.com you are
correct it is a host what comes after the http:// is assumed to be a

If you are asking about multiple servers that can receive, you can have
multiple MX records, and they can have the same or different priorities.

OK, I'll bow to the superior knowledge of you, Kevin, and the others.
However, allow me to tie up a few loose ends that still bother me. If the
proper format is [EMAIL PROTECTED], then how does the system know how to
identify the needed MX record? If we only allowed a single, root (or @)
MX
record, then that would be the obvious default. However, the system
allows
multiple MX records, with names. So I don't see how it can be sufficient
to
specify only the domain name; I would think you need some way of picking
the
MX record. So perhaps the proper format is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Then, if the MX record has no name (you want to reference the @ record),
the
 address shortens to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also have seen several references to subdomains in the replies to my
posts, and I don't see where those apply to this situation. We're not
talking (I believe) about subdomains; just records within a single domain,
where the MX records point to a host somewhere in the world.

 Here's my dilemma this week:

Due to an SMTP error that I couldn't resolve, I reinstalled both Windows

 immediately before the reinstallation.

Now any users who have their e-mail clients set to save a copy of
messages on the server are receiving every message in the main.mbx file
when they send/receive. Is there any way to
stop this? Is there something else I should restore from the backup to
make sure this doesn't keep happening. Any help would be greatly
 appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure. I know that if you open the mail box with the Imail Client on the

Check Relay configurations on the Exchange server.
Check for password compromise on the Exchange server.

FYI, Declude Hijack would have captured and quarantined this mass of

 Subject: [IMail Forum] Exchange issue

Our company has many locations throughout the country and a few of them
use Exchange locally. This past Monday, 2 of our offices with Exchange
sent out over 10K messages through our Imail server (normally they would
send out a few hundred). Each of these messages had hundreds of
recipients - all of them within our company. They were all written by
one person. But they weren't written by anyone in these offices. They
were actually messages *delivered* to them 3 weeks ago by someone else
at a different company. He's a VP and so I had (idiot!) whitelisted his
email address. So thousands of these emails were being sent out,
written 3 weeks ago by someone at a different company. And this was
happening at 2 different offices (Virginia Beach and Tampa) who are not
connected to each other in any way (except that they both use Exchange
and they both send out and receive messages through our Imail server).

 Any ideas???

 Here's some log entries:

Here's a normal POP session for Tampa users:

RE: [IMail Forum] [mail forum] failed delivery of mail with certain domains...

2005-06-04 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)

1. You did not post the entire log of
the communication with AOL servers for that message. What you posted is part of
their HELO message. The line that would indicate why the message was rejected
is about 5 lines down.

2. Any AV can scan the mail box files,
and then it will quarantine or delete them. OUCH! You do not want to be
touching the mail box files. You need to scan it right after Imail SMTPD receives
the message. There are 4 most used configurations: a) IMGate b) Declude c) MXGuard
d) Imail rules and AV and AntiSpam. Many of us use a combination of more than
one of those.

3. Since you are posting from a yahoo address
and no where else do you post what your domain is, we have no way of helping by
testing.

1st question...

About 6 weeks ago, we noticed our Imail Server (V. 8.05HF3)server
was set to open-relay and hence, were black-listed. We've long since resolved
that issue but certain domains (particularly AOL.com and Yahoo.com) constantly
reject all our mail. I looked at the log file and tried to make sense out of
it. Here's what I get from AOL...

which
20040604 005251 127.0.0.1 SMTP (05B42B55)
220 have no reverse-DNS (PTR record) assigned.

Does this mean our Reverse DNS records need to be modified? If so, does
this happen through our ISP, who holds all of our MX records? (I think)

2nd question...

Our Imail server has NO 3rd party SPAM protection nor aserver
based Anti-Virus. What's the most common and effective anti-spam/anti-virus
software that works well with Imail V. 8.05HF3 and checks mailboxes rather then
flat file scans?

Disclaimer: I'm not a Imail expert. At best, I'd consider myself a
novice. If I'm missing the obvious, please accept my apologies and offer me a
solution rather then a scolding.

Thanks in advance.

RE: [IMail Forum] [mail forum] failed delivery of mail with certain domains...

2005-06-04 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)

A 221 code generally means the message
would have been accepted but there is something that caused it to be rejected. Are
there any more lines after QUIT and before finished? AOL usually is good
about giving the reason for the rejection.

HOWEVER: Since you now provided the
domain name you are sending from, as some one else pointed out, by checking
DNSReport.com shows a bunch of problems directly related to e-mail, and which
will clearly cause problems. http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=aamericanselfstorage.com

address. Perhaps someone here has been mislabeling it as tarpitting,
either way when I get a chance I'm going to RTFM like Tom said and
figure out how to turn it on myself... Then I'll be a nice person and
post it here in the event someone else doesn't have TFM handy.

Your attitude sir stinks. The exact registry setting has been clearly posted

Maybe if you bothered to read the release notes and used the correct

dictionary attacks but it stopped being a problem when I eliminated the

That is because most of us are/were using the MS IIS SMT Virtual server as a

I finally had the time to test and setup ORF on my backup MX and it had cut

I really don't understand why Ipswitch did not make this function work a
 little better.
Just dropping the connection seems to be lazy on their part.
They could have made this function better while at it.

In a perfect world, peace and harmony would be every where...

But by whose definition?

Tis' better to take small steps and ensure that they are on solid ground

I think you misread what Tripp had said. To add desired functions/features
apparently requires re-writing the SMTPD service. During that rewrite, some
or part of the desired functions/features became available. Instead of
waiting to allow us to use all of the function/feature being planned which
would not be until the next version/upgrade, they decided to allow us to
have a part of that function/feature.

Like I said before, if this were a perfect world...

Open-relay issues, V. 8.05HF3

Hello
group,

Last
week, after lots of bounced emails, we discoveredour Imail server
(V.8.02) was set to open-relay and thus, we started getting black
listed on some spam database lists (as expected.) We resolved the problem and
along the way, we upgraded from V.8.02 to 8.03, 8.04, 8.05, 8.05HF1, 8.05HF2
and lastly, 8.05HF3.

We've
seem to drop off from almost all black-listed databases and when we do a ping
test or an on-line test for open-relay, we come back as not
open-relay and trusted.

Strangely,
we now (as we could always) receive all incoming mail but very little mail gets
outside of our domain. Amongst ourselves, things circulate without a problem
but when we generatenew mail or reply to one, it returns undeliverable.

We're a
small company (90-100 email accounts) and I'm their IT guy. The guy before me
installed Imailand myprevious experiences were all with MS
Exchange. Needless to say, I'm a novice with Imail and I'vebeen trying to
self-educate by reading the manual and following all your great threads. For
whatever reason, I can't put a fingeron why this keeps
happening. It's been5-6 days since the open-relay issue was resolved
andwe still have lots of problems.

I'm
considering calling IPswitch (for a fee) and getting a tech to walk me through
a solution. Any thoughts or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe H.

all I do is just download and apply the updated definitions, stop and
restart the two

shows the

From what I understand with Symantec, when you don't choose to upgrade
you're just penalized on not upgrading the AV engine but the virus
definition updates are still occurring. Did I get this wrong???

 Hello all...

I wanted to get your thoughts on a situation I am having with IP Switch,
along with a recommendation on AV products.

We currently run IMail 8.05 at a school, and it runs perfectly for what we
need. Our AV is expiring, and IP Switch is telling us that they will no
longer supply an AV renewal, and to maintain our AV protection, we will
need
to go to the ICS (mucho $). We feel this is incredibly bogus, as we
are
satisfied with the product we have now, and all we want to do is upgrade
our
 AV patterns.

I have spoken with IPSwitch, and they are telling me 'this is the way it
is'. I wanted to hear from others their experiences and thoughts.

To get around this, we are thinking about integrating a third party AV
with
our MX Guard SPAM filter. It integrates with FPROT, CLAM, and NAI. I
wanted to get some opinions and experiences with others who have utilized
this method, and what AV they felt was best.

 Thanks for your time,

To give him the benefit of the doubt he didn't mention the state of his
 Symantec licensing.

He could have a current Symantec license allowing him to download
 updated definitions.

Oh, I see, he was able to get a support License for the OEM Symantec
software branded as Imail AV from some one else. (But gee, then that would
mean his Imail AV did not expire.)

Having a current license with Symantec for another product does not entitle
the holder of the license to updates to all Symantec products that holder
has or may have had.

Example: (A true life one.) A client (not mine, one in Australia) who has 50
workstations and purchased Symantec Corp 7.6 for those 50 workstations. When
the one year was up, they only purchased renewal for 35 workstations saying
the other 15 really did not do anything and did not need it. However, they
continued to update all the workstations through configurations in the admin
console. They got hit with a virus outbreak (some one had disabled RTFP as
it was slowing the computers down) they enlisted Symantec support to help
get them started on cleanup. Some how Symantec during the configuration
review found that they were updating 50 workstations but were only licensed
for 35. That client ended up paying a big fine.

Having a current SA for Imail
Professional, I dl'ed and upgraded to 8.2 and everything seems to be going
smooth so far. I am tailing the mail log now and it is still working, at
least. Declude is still working with it. I went into Imail Admin
and took a look around. There's a min and max threads in the SMTP
advanced properties now, testament to the newmultithreaded SMTP
engine. There are new tabs in the IP-ful hosts for White Lists and
Attachment Blocking. New AntiSpam tabs include SPF, and Broken MIME
Headers. Naturally, I went in and disabled all of it, since IMgate and
Declude are pretty handy at that sort of thing grin.

Nothing that I saw was changed ifrom my
original configuration. Nothing that was disabled got magically
re-enabled. New features were enabled by default, except SPF and
Attachment Blocking (was enabled, but all items were de-selected by
default).

The thing I was interested in was the Dictionary attack feature that breaks a
connection after so many ERRs in a single connection. I guess that isn't
configurable, because there's no place in the GUI to set it. Not that I
need it, but it is really the thing that Imail needs most IMO, a defense
against the dictionary attacks that forced me and many others to put up an
IMgate box or use BlackIce or some other method of mitigating the extreme loads
that Imail was experiencing when it was dealing with the dictionary attacks on
its own.

Yes, but it's the wrong answer that sends someone off on an
  unnecessary wild-goose chase. . .

Not truly a wild-goose chase, as the ISP -- usually much more

discern the extenuating routing circumstances and would direct the

And I'd say that Darin's 999/1000 is actually much too low. It's
probably more like 99,999/100,000 times that a person who. . .

 a) doesn't have a PTR for their mailserver in April 2005;

 b) doesn't know that forward DNS is unrelated to reverse DNS;

 c) exhausts the DNS resources on the net without finding guidance
 there;

 d) posts to an IMail list with this FAQ, without noting that they have
already consulted their bandwidth provider, as the archives (until
 now) always recommend; and

 e) is the sole IT person charged with solving this problem

they get a trojan, as well as get a notification that this type of event
 occurred?

Declude Hijack was designed exactly for that. It tracks number of outgoing
reciepients by IP address and when it reaches a threshold that IP is
quarantined until manually reviewed and released by some one.

Also helps to enforce Terms of Use agreements.

I would think that since smtpd is multi-threaded in 8.2 that this should

As many of you probably know AOL has finally stopped allowing connection
from any domain that doesn't have a reverse-DNS (PTR) record. What I
didn't know is that Network Solutions does *not* provide the ability to
setup a PTR record. We have our domains registered and managed at
NetSol, so today I noticed in our Imail logs a bunch of messages from
 AOL that went like this:

America Online (AOL) and its affiliated companies do not
authorize the use of its proprietary computers and computer
networks to accept, transmit, or distribute unsolicited bulk
e-mail sent from the internet. *Effective immediately: AOL
may no longer accept connections from IP addresses which
have no reverse-DNS (PTR record) assigned.*

So I called NetSol to setup a PTR record and they said they do not
provide that capability. Amazing. The biggest registrar on the planet
 doesn't provide it.

I'm running the Windows DNS service (to take the load off our access
provider's DNS) - can I setup my own PTR record and move my domains to
my local DNS service? If not, any other suggestions?

 Thanks.

[IMail Forum] Xerox DC 555 and Imail

2005-04-21 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
If any one has a Xerox DC 555 or similar model that can create PDF files
please contact me ASAP off list.

We are investigating a problem with PDF files created on that DocuCenter and
an upcoming version of Imail.

Note, these PDF files appear to be 4-5 times the size of a normal PDF,
meaning that a PDF created in Acrobat on a workstation will be in the size
range of 25-80Kb and the ones with problems from the DocuCenter are in the
range of 300-600kb.

The thought is that the upcoming version of Imail has uncovered a bug in the

either prove or disprove that thought the better.

Subject: [IMail Forum] percent sybols in the To: lines?

I just started using Declude for Imail and I'm trying to understand why
my mail server is sending so many messages to the quarantine folders
instead of just marking the headers. The only test I have set to
quarantine/HOLD is the PERCENT test and when I look at the messages
being quarantined, none of them have a percent symbol in the To: line.
Since there are so many messages failing this test, I am concerned that
there is legitimate content I am missing, though I have yet to find one
from the hundred thousand messages it caught just yesterday.

Basically it tests to see if there is a percent sign in the To: line of
the incoming email and if there is, it quarantines the message.
Apparently this is a means to get around relay restrictions. It seems
too good to be true that such a simple test would catch so much SPAM.

The questions I'm trying to answer are:

How does a percent sign get around a relay restriction?

Is Imail aware of this issue and what are the problems with what I am
now doing; removing mail with a percent sign in the To: line, though I
don't see it in the mail, when I open it up.

 I'm running Imail 8.15 on 2003.

We have a server running Imail 8.15 with about 100 domains on shared

addresses. The server is also running the latest version of Declude.
After upgrading Imail from 7.15 to 8.15 a strange thing has happened
to one on the domains with a shared IP address. I don't know if the
problem originates from Imail or Declude and I why this is only
 happening to this domain (artonegallery.com).

Add the following line to the Declude Global.cfg:

Should I address this issue on the Declude mailing list instead or is
 it something with Imail?

If you are using Declude, you should be following the Declude list and

Right now, the alias goes to a single mailbox, then bounces.

1. The A/MX record can not point to the same name that you are using in the

Its time I setup exchange2aliases for two systems for which we are using
Imail as a gateway for exchange. I'm a little confused, so any guidance
 would be appreciated.

Right now the MX for one of these domains points to mail.example1.com
where
an A Record points mail.example1.com to our Imail box. An entry in the
Hosts
file on that server points mail.example1.com to the IP of the Exchange box
(NTSBS). There is no host for this domain configured in Imail.

First off If I implement Exchange2Aliases does this setup remain or need
to
 change?

Second, I'm not too sure on the syntax for calling exchange2aliases...I
see
 the example:

 Cscript exchange2aliases.vbs mail.broadleaf.local
 LDAP://192.168.1.1/cn=users,dc=broadleaf,dc=local broadleaf.local

And am a little confused on the syntax of all this and what names go where

 Assume:
   domain = example1.com
MX of example1.com points to Mail.example1.com
Mail.example1.com points to 1.2.3.4 (IMAIL BOX)
Imail box Host File entry mail.example1.com points to 4.5.6.7 (MSSBS

   MSSBS Domain = example2.local

RE: [IMail Forum] Imail SMSSMTP Issue

2005-04-12 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
G'day mate.

No, I am not from Ausie land, but I know some people down on the wrong side
of the planet.

There was a MS patch 8xx250 from Feburary that plays with SMB messages. It's
a long shot but is that installed?

Try removing 1/2 the whitelist in SMSSMTP.

Try running performance monitor on SMSSMTP counters to see if you notice
anything there.

Where are the clients (including your laptop) connecting from, the Internet,
LAN, DMZ?

Is there a firewall involved? Any recent changes or updates to that?

Subject: [IMail Forum] Imail SMSSMTP Issue

 Hey everyone,

We are having a problem with our mail server that for the life of me, I
can't work out. Our email was down for 12 hours yesterday.

This is a bit of a long story, and I apologise, but this is all the
 information I have.

We are running a HP Proliant ML370G3 running Imail 8.15 HotFix 1, and
Symantec Mail Security for SMTP Gateways 4.1.0.19 (SMSSMTP).

SMSSMTP uses Port 25, so all mail that is sent by our client PCs first
hits
SMSSMTP and is then is forwarded to Imail if the mail is internal, or sent
directly out to the Internet if it's destined to an external address.

Imail uses Port 110 for the POP3 connections, and Port 1025 for SMTP
 connections.

Long before I started working here, whoever setup Imail had setup our
primary domain, ruralpress.com, with the name of the server in front of
the
domain. So the domain was rplemail.ruralpress.com. This wasn't really an
issue, because ruralpress.com was configured as an alias.

The problem was that whenever creating a new email account in Imail, the
reply to address would be [EMAIL PROTECTED] So whenever you
sent
an email from Webmail, the rplemail would be in the reply to address. When
you create a new account you have to go and manually remove this,
otherwise
users couldn't reply to our messages sent from webmail.

On the weekend, I backed up the Imail registry and all the data files and
reinstalled it. I did a find and replace on the registry file and removed
all the rplemail. entries, then reimported it. The domain was now called
ruralpress.com and everything was running fine. It took less than 20
minutes
 to do this.

Then, 2 days later, we started having problems.

Basically, mail being sent from clients would not leave the outbox. I
could
telnet to port 25 on the mail server, but would not receive a response
from
SMSSMTP. Usually you can enter SMTP commands and actually send an email
via
the command line, but you couldn't even type anything.

Restarting the SMSSMTP service fixed the problem for about 10-20 minutes
and
then it would do it again.

In the SMSSMTP reports, there were a lot of SMTP connections that had
connection terminated prematurely. I did a search on the Symantec
website
for this error and came across a page talking about HP NIC's. It suggested
updating to the latest drivers, which I did. However, the problem
persisted.

Next, I rebooted the server completely but 10-20 minutes later, more of
the
 same.

I contacted Symantec who had me download SMSSMTP 4.1.4.0, which I upgraded
to, yet 10-20 minutes later the same thing.

We thought it could be a corrupt config in SMSSMTP so I restored the
config
from Friday night's backup tape and tired that. No luck.

Next we completely uninstalled SMSSMTP and recreated the config from
 scratch. Same problem.

There were some SUS Updates installed on Saturday morning, so we began
removing them 1 by 1 (there were 7 in total). When we got to the update
KB841356, we had to reboot. After rebooting the server would not load the
desktop, but we could connect to it from another server. So, we copied off
all the data we needed for Imail.

We had a new server that was destined for something else, but began
building
that as a replacement. The new server is a HP Proliant ML370G3 with 3 x
72GB
HDD, 2.5GB RAM and 2 x Intel 3.2Ghz XEON CPUs. We built this with Windows
 2000 Server SP4 and installed Imail 8.15HF1 and then SMSSMTP 4.1.4.0. I
restored all the registry files and data and everything started working.
Too
 easy I thought!

10-20 minutes later, same problem again! ARGH

So...it was about 11.30pm at this stageI stopped all the services. And
I
removed Imail. I then deleted all registry keys for it and re-added the
registry settings from BEFORE I changed the domain name on the weekend,
thinking maybe it was something to do with that. But, no luck. The problem
 kept happening.

When we left at about 12.20am, I had left SMSSMTP running, but on Port
1026.
So nothing is sending any data to it. Imail is using Port 25 and 110 and
is
working fine. I came back in at 7am and SMSSMTP hadn't stopped responding
like it was the day before, but this I think

RE: [IMail Forum] New exchange box

2005-04-12 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
You do that in one of 2 ways:

The traditional Store and forward way by using the KB on the Ipswitch site.

The alias way where each user has an alias on the Imail server which then
forwards to the Exchange server via an additional SMTP e-mail address added
via RUS.

We are in the process of setting up an exchange box for our staff and
faculty to use
(we are in a testing mode right now), our students will still use iMail.

 This is the current setup-
All GVC users exist on imail, if they are going to be using exchange then
they have a
forward set on their acct to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have an entry set (on
the iMail
box)in the hosts file for that domain. The users that have forwarding
setup are
receiving and sending mail just fine.

I do not want to maintain the current faculty and staff users on the iMail
box. I want
to delete their acct but still have email delivered to their exchange acct
thru iMail first.
All email accts end with gvc.edu.

I have tried entering the ip address of the exchange box in the Remote
Mail Gateway
Host, which according to the KB sounds like what I want to do.

Please let me know what I am not understanding.

 Thanks

RE: [IMail Forum] spool / mailbox partition fragmentation

2005-04-11 Thread John Tolmachoff \(Lists\)
User accounts are generally not a fragmentation issue unless you have
many mbx files that grow very large and don't get wiped from the
server. Since these files are only used by one user at a time,
fragmentation in them is mostly inconsequential, and I wouldn't be
 concerned.

Or if you have a lot of webmail users.

No, you do not need to use ETRN. Let Imail deliver it to the Exchange
server.

We have a customer that is setting up their own Exchange server, but
still wants the mail to flow through our server to take advantage of
 spam control and virus checking.

I've been trying to experiment a bit with this on our system (we have an
old Exchange 5.5 server). What does seem to happen is that mail quite
happily is delivered to the Exchange machine, but IMail, rather than
storing and waiting for ETRN, happily shoves it off to the Exchange box.
This isn't necessarily a problem, but I'm just wondering if this is
normal behavior? If the Exchange server is on a permanent broadband
connection with a fixed IP, do I really need ETRN at all?
