 I've used it since about 6 months ago.
 I had had a lot of problem with sapdb jdbc driver that had caused
 big memory
 leaks problems in the application server.
 Now we're going with postgresql and happy with it. No more daily
 reboot of the
 jboss server and life easier.

 But perhaps now sapdb finally succeded in creating a reliable
 jdbc driver, I
 don't know.

 Bye,

Re: [JBoss-user] Explicit Usage of Commit and Rollabck...

2003-07-07 Thread Adrian Brock
If you want to handle commit/rollback inside your bean you should
use BMT (Bean managed transactions).

commit-option is only for entity beans. It is a policy for the
cached entity bean instance at the end of the transaction.

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for
the immediate response.
I am new
to this area... So just a few more questions;-)
So if I
have to use BMT for my bean is it enough to specify the
transaction-type as 'Bean' in ejb-jar.xml. Or is there anything
more added to this.
I have my
DS deployed as a service. Also can I use the same procedure to connect to
the database (i.e lookup method to access), which is used in other beans,
or do I have to use a seperate type of connection methodology. (Also if
there is any useful links with eg. it would be helpful)

Thanks

Re[4]: [JBoss-user] Question about CMP entity

2003-07-07 Thread Alexey Loubyansky
Hello Marco,

MT Alexey, I would be interested in writing something useful for Jboss users if
MT possible. Where shall I implemented the bottom interfaces? In an ordinary

Entity beans don't have to implement these interfaces. The two
generators available, are not aware of EJB at all. And can be used by
any component in JBoss.
But, generally, you could implement these interfaces in EJB. I haven't
thought about it, though.

MT Shall I write any code for getFactoryName() and
MT getKeyGenerator()?

Yes. getFactoryName returns factory's JNDI name and getKeyGenerator()
returns an instance of KeyGenerator.

MT Is the entity-command element support by XDoclet AFAYK?

Yes, it is supported.

MT May the bottom mentioned interfaces implemented in the same class?

I don't see why not.

MT  At

MT built in solution (by means of a synchronized method). In any case, I will
MT probably ask to one of my developers to build this solution with you, if
MT that is ok for you.

Great, let's discuss it.

Thank you,

MT Subject: Re[2]: [JBoss-user] Question about CMP entity

 You need to implement two interfaces (in package
MT org.jboss.ejb.plugins.keygenerator)
 public interface KeyGenerator
 {
public Object generateKey();
 }

 public interface KeyGeneratorFactory
 {
public String getFactoryName();
public KeyGenerator getKeyGenerator() throws Exception;
 }

 Then deploy/bind the factory to JNDI and declare entity-command in
 jbosscmp-jdbc.xml supplying fractory's JNDI name, for example
   !-- uses key generator to fetch the next key value --
   entity-command name=key-generator
  attribute
MT name=key-generator-factoryUUIDKeyGeneratorFactory/attribute
   /entity-command

 In ejbCreate container calls KeyGenerator.generateKey() to set PK
 value.

 There is UUID key generator in 3.2 and there is HiLo generator
 (something like you are going to implement with EJBs) in HEAD.

 If you really would like to go this route, feel free to contact me.

 BTW, key generation welcomes contributions. In 4.0 it is also used for
 our JDO implementation JBossDO. If anyone is interested in
 contribution, please, contact me.

  Hello Marco,

  if the problem really is a primary key generation you could consider
  entity-commands in JBoss-3.2.
  The options are:
  - database key generation (sequences, etc);
  - custom sql;
  - you can supply your own key generator class that will be asked for
the next key;
  - JDBC3.0 PreparedStatement.getGeneratedKeys().

  MT Suppose a client wants to assign a value to a peopleId field in a

You need the xa datasource for prepare()

When I'm not using an xa datasource why is it expecting for a prepare(); My app
does'nt involve any XA datasource. In fact, the configuration above is the only
datasource configured for my app.

  2) WARN [WrappedConnection] Closing a statement you left open,

 please do your own housekeeping

 You are not closing a statement. Closing a pooled connection
 just returns the connection to the pool.

 In all my Entity Beans, I have this following code to clean up
the resources they use and I've double checked all my beans so that
they dont leave any connections open.

 private void releaseResources(ResultSet rs, Statement stmt, Connection
 conn) {
if (rs != null) {
try {
rs.close();
} catch (SQLException e) {
log.fatal(e);
}
}

if (stmt != null) {
try {
stmt.close();
} catch (SQLException e) {
log.fatal(e);
}
}

if (conn != null) {
try {
conn.close();
} catch (SQLException e) {
log.fatal(e);
}
}
 }

JBoss disagrees with you.

Maybe you have:

Statement stmt = conn.prepareStatement(...);
...
stmt = conn.prepareStatement(...);
...
releaseResources(rs, stmt, conn);

The first statement won't be closed.

Or maybe your releaseResources is not in a finally block.

Thanks for your advice on this, I will double check my app again.

Yes, you need a user transaction
Read the spec or an ejb book.
Make sure this is no gap in your logic where the connection
doesn't get closed or the transaction isn't committed/rolled back.

You are using an MDB. You have two resources in the same transaction:
The JMS session and the DB connection. This does two phase commit,
prepare/commit.

Interesting!

The warning message is pretty annoying (if, for example, you don't
want to/can't shell out for Sybase's Distributed Transaction Manager,
or if you're using the built-in Hypersonic db). Could there be a
config option (presumably as part of the MDB/MDB containter config)

I would use should rather than requires.

If you want the acknowledgement of the message receipt to be in sync
with the db commit, yes.
Of course, you can use BMT to separate them into two different
transactions or just ignore the warning about the prepare() on local.

[JBoss-user] JBoss performance enhancements

2003-07-07 Thread Jon Barnett
Version 1 of our document on some simple code improvements to JBoss 3.2.0
and the effect on performance is now available. We'll work on the document
as time allows. The current data covers performance measurements based on
Linux/IBM SDK/Trove. The document is an 820K pdf available from the
section of our website on JBoss code optimizations,
http://www.amitysolutions.com.au/pages/downloads.html#code.  With four
basic and relatively simple changes, we obtained a further 10 percent
response time reduction over the bytecode optimizations we performed
earlier - a total of about 30 percent in total over the vanilla JBoss
distribution. This also seemed to translate to the same level of
application responsiveness.

We also demonstrate the raw performance of Collections including Iterator
over ArrayList get(i). Apart from that, the figures give some idea of the
cost of internal client calls versus external client calls. We hope these
are of some benefit.

In the future, we would like to test ECperf performance gains but
currently don't have the equipment to adequately meet the ECperf overall
resource demands. If anyone would like to donate some equipment for
testing, please step forward. ;) We'll also plan to look at Sun JDK
performance and memory performance.

Best regards,

JonB.

by the server. It only requires a local transaction (which it
starts itself, suspending/resuming any existing transaction).

This thread is about db connections used by the application
in the same transaction as MDB message delivery.

make sure there is mysql-get-generated-keys entity-command in

What version are you using, BTW?

[JBoss-user] JBoss-net xml-schema problem

2003-07-07 Thread Mark.Gargan
Title: Message

Hi
folks,
 I've a two
classes called ExecutionData and Parameter that are used with various EJBs in my
application.
In order to move to
web services I'm under the impression that I need Axis or jboss-net to be able
to be able to decipher them so I
put the
@jboss-net:xml-schema tag above the class declaration in both java files.

Generating the
web-service using xdoclet produces the following wsdd
snippet.

typeMapping  qname="ExecutionData"

type="java:ie.tcd.cs.kdeg.serene.data.ExecutionData"
serializer="org.apache.axis.encoding.ser.BeanSerializerFactory"
deserializer="org.apache.axis.encoding.ser.BeanDeserializerFactory"
encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"/

 typeMapping

When I deploy
this web-service.xml file within my .wsr file an attempt to retrieve the

exception thrown that the 'xmlns:tns1 can't be left
empty.

If I don't
include the above typeMapping in the web-services.xml file then it retrieves the

wsdl fine
however the ExecutionData is mapped to the xsl:anyType datatype. However jboss

Any ideas

Re: [JBoss-user] JBoss-net xml-schema problem

2003-07-07 Thread Neal Sanche
Hi Mark,

I had this exact problem. What I did was use the same prefix that I
gave to the jbossnet code generator in my ANT script, to the
@jboss-net:xml-schema tag, and it seems to have cleared it up. So, if
you have in your ANT script:

jbossnet  prefix=myapp ... /

Then in your data object class XDoclet tag, you need to say something
like:

@jboss-net:xml-schema urn=myapp:myDataObject

Then everything seemed to get linked together and start working for
me.

Hope this helps.

 put the @jboss-net:xml-schema tag above the class declaration in

 Generating the web-service using xdoclet produces the following

   typeMapping

 deserializer=org.apache.axis.encoding.ser.BeanDeserializerFactory
   encodingStyle= http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/

 When I deploy this web-service.xml file within my .wsr file an
 attempt to retrieve the
 wsdl I get an exception thrown that the 'xmlns:tns1 can't be left

 If I don't include the above typeMapping in the web-services.xml
 file then it retrieves the
 wsdl fine however the ExecutionData is mapped to the xsl:anyType
 datatype. However jboss then can't find a de-serialiser when I go
 to invoke the service.

 Any ideas folks,

Thanks. That took me right to the correct page, where I found both the
Windows and the Unix versions for $10.00 each. I decided to purchase it
on the spot, and was pleased to see that ComponentSource offered a
telephone service where I could give my credit card information over the
phone.

However, when I called ComponentSource (1-888-850-9911), I was informed
by the person I spoke with (whose name I forget) that they don't sell
JBoss. I tried to explain that I wasn't interested in purchasing JBoss
itself but rather the documentation which was listed on their site as an
item for sale, but he steadfastly insisted that they don't sell JBoss.
 He said that the only way to purchase JBoss is directly from the
JBoss.org web site. I even explained that I had a reference code,
presumably pointing to the fact that ComponentSource does indeed list
the JBoss documentation on their site, but he didn't want to even hear
the code. He said that they only handle renewals, and offered little
else to the situation.

[In my opinion he could benefit from some customer service training; I
had a more helpful attitude than that ten years ago when I worked in a
fast food restaurant.]

So, if this is not where to purchase JBoss documentation from, can
someone clue me in on how it's supposed to work? The JBoss.org web site
doesn't seem to have anything except the ComponentSource frame.

Thanks,

Erik

[JBoss-user] Secured bean call from MBean

2003-07-07 Thread Sebastian Hauer
Hi,

I want to make a bean call to a secured bean from an Mbean. The Mbean
has no security information associated with its calling thread and can
therefore not do this.
I was wondering what one should do in such a scenario. I don't want to
remove the security context from the bean and was wondering what's the
right thing to do here?

So far I could only think of writing my own user name (no password)
login module and setting up a new JAAS security domain for the Mbean
JAAS authentication. Would this still be considered secure, as I am
only using this code inside the app server or did I forget about
something?

Regards,
Sebastian

Re: [JBoss-user] constraining session bean pool

How to configure JBoss 3.0 to constrain the session bean pool to only a

You will need to define your own session bean container configuration.

The default ones are in conf/standardjboss.xml and you are probably currently
using the Standard Stateful SessionBean one from that file which has a max
pool size of 100.

You can copy this configuration from there into your bean's jboss.xml file
into the container-configuration section (see the jboss_3_0.dtd file for
details) then adapt it to your needs.

Change the container-pool-confMaximumSize from 100 to whatever you need.
I've read the jboss.xml DTD
(http://www.jboss.org/j2ee/dtd/jboss_3_0.dtd) and constructed my
jboss.xml per its requirements (I think), but I still get errors when I
deploy the JAR file. Here are the contents of my jboss.xml, can anyone
tell me what is wrong with it? I wasn't sure what to use as the value
for the required element feeder-policy, so I just used the one
suggested in the DTD's comments.

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?

Re: [JBoss-user] Secured bean call from MBean

2003-07-07 Thread Adrian Brock
Hi Sebastian,

The normal solution is to get the MBean to do a JAAS login
using the client-login module.

In 3.2 it should be possible to write it as an XMBean
with an interceptor that does run-as processing. Such
an interceptor doesn't currently exist AFAIK.

Adrian

[JBoss-user] Some unofficial performance results

2003-07-07 Thread Jon Barnett
Due to ECperf use requirements, we can't report anything too concrete.

Some unofficial information :-
For ECperf 1.1 on our meagre test configuration, the standard JBoss 3.2.0
distribution fails at txRate=1 for a Sun JDK 1.4.1_01 - failures with
manufacturing and orders response times and failure to meet targets by
substantial margins, up to 30 percent below. With the changes, we were
able to get to txRate=2 without failure. At txRate=3, response times
passed but the targets failed by up to 5 percent of the required values.
So the performance improvements appear to deliver substantial benefits.

We also measured responses against our own test application on the Sun JDK
on Windows and determined a decrease in the reponse time of 20 percent on
measurements taken in a previous study.
