[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1983108] Re: [nouveau] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [plymouthd:371]
As I said, most of the times boot proceeds with no issues. For now, at least, I can live with this bug, since it rarely occurs, but I know this makes finding the cause more difficult (if I change something, and next time it boots with no issue, I have no way to know if I solved the problem or if the issue will strike after perhaps a week) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-hwe-5.15 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1983108 Title: [nouveau] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1983108] Re: [nouveau] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [plymouthd:371]
Installing version 20.04 would get me stuck with the previous version of apps and libraries, and that would be more annoying that dealing with the bug (since it usually doesn't occur, and when it occurs it usually just require a system restart. Also, I replaced the Nvidia driver with nouveau since more than one year, and this specific bug occurred only in the last two months, so in general nouveau worked well for me (although it hanged on some web games). In some aspects, nouveau worked even better than the proprietary driver (for example, it allowed to use the text mode framebuffer at high resolution, while the proprietary driver didn't, it worked only for the xwindow mode) Last but not least: when booting from CD only nouveau driver is available anyway. So, as long as it's possible, I will wait for a fix: I am aware it might not come soon, but it would never come if no one reports the bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-hwe-5.15 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1983108 Title: [nouveau] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1983108] Re: watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [plymouthd:371]
Neither replacing the video card (expensive) nor installing an older version (that would break most of the software already installed and would leave me exposed to security bugs) are viable options, especially since the issue occurs rarely. The package for drivers 340 still exists for Ubuntu 22.04, but as far as I could see it's just a virtual package that installs nouveau instead, and I guess it's only purpose is to replacing the proprietary driver with the open source one during a system update from Ubuntu 20. Also, since Nvidia has finally decided to go open source (https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-releases-open-source-gpu- kernel-modules/ ), I expect that in the future the nouveau driver will become the only one anyway and the Nvidia drivers will be integrated in it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-hwe-5.15 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1983108 Title: watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1983108] Re: watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for ... [plymouthd:371]
I cannot install an official Nvidia driver. The official driver for my adapter is nvidia-340, that is not compatible with the latest kernel, failed to build on Ubuntu 20.4 (it is a known bug that I had already reported as affecting me: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers-340/+bug/1938978 ), and has been deprecated and removed in Ubuntu 22.04 If I open "Additional driver" with Ubuntu 22.04 I don't see any driver available. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1888556] Re: Kernel linux-image-4.4.0-186-generic and nvidia drivers
Ok, I found the cause: I had the meta package linux-image-generic installed, but not the metapackage linux-generic. For that reason, when kernel was upgraded the package with the kernel headers wasn't upgraded, and that caused the issue (that of course disappeared reverting to the previous kernel version) After installing the metapackage linux-generic I managed to update to the new kernel and the nvidia drivers worked as supposed. So, this bug report can be closed, sorry for wasting your time ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888556 Title: Kernel linux-image-4.4.0-186-generic and nvidia drivers Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: After updating my kernel to linux-image-4.4.0-186-generic yesterday in Ubuntu 16.04, the screen resolution dropped, because it stopped using the nvidia drivers.
