[lace] Pillow question

2012-01-23 Thread Jean Nathan
Living on the south coast where there are few waves in the sea, there is a
small surfing community, and we have a so-called highly-expensive artificial
surf reef which has been being built, repaired and tweaked for several
years without working as promised and likely never will. That means that, as
well as a coupe of specialist surf shops, the supermarkets also sell cheap
high-density polystyrene surf boards and the shorter flat body boards
(they're around 3 feet long by 18 inches wide, probably a bit bigger). At
the end of the season when few people have bought the boards, the
supermarkets sell them off very cheaply. I bought a couple for GBP 3.5O each
intending to remove the plastic covers and cut each into two approx. 18 inch
flat lacemaking pillows. It's the same high density polystyrene that pillows
are made from. Even bought a hot wire cutter (bit like a hack saw but with a
wire for a blade attacked to a battery) to cut the foam without ending up
with white bobbles anywhere.

Of course I didn't get around to it and ended giving them away to a couple
of local children. But one was used as a vertical pillow to demonstrate
lacemaking stitches on a larger scale to a local WI group, using knitting
wool for thread and dolly pegs for bobbins.

I did have a couple of straw-filled domed pillows, but much prefer flat
light-weight polystyrene ones, but I can't cope with a pillow more than 20
inches in diameter.

Polystyrene is cheap enough (especially using body boards) to replace a
pillow when it's no longer fit for use, although I haven't had one crumble
yet, possibly because I don't make small motifs, but prefer larger items
such as fans of pictures, and therefore don't keep using the same spot on
the pillow over and over again.

[lace] Polyethylene in UK

2012-01-23 Thread Jean Nathan
You might be able to buy polyethylene in the UK, but in industrial
quantities - they be unlikely to sell you one sheet, and, unless you can see
what you're buying, you could end up having bought the rigid stuff that's
used for protection in things like aluminium camera or gun cases and not the
squidgier stuff for a lace pillow. The places that sell it here are selling
to the trade, and you can't just walk in and buy it in small quantities off
the shelf like groceries. At one time we would have been able to get offcuts
from Sunseekers (who make the big luxury multi-millionnaires' sea-going
motor launches), but someone got greedy and staff were stopped from taking
any waste altogether.

Just as we don't have the same brands of detergent, stain removers, craft
shops, quilts shops, food and loads of other stuff. We do have Walmart
trading under the name ASDA, but they don't sell the same as Walmart in the
US. Because it's sold in the US doesn't mean it's available here or in other
countries - each has their own products available and way of doing things.
At least we have proper cheese :-).

[lace] pillows

2012-01-23 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Arachnids

I have found sticking a layer of butter muslin or other very soft loosely
woven cotton fabric over the surface using a weak mix of wallpaper paste helps
to preserve the surface of a polstyrene pillow. A paste without fungicide is
probably more helathy that one with.

Enjoy your lacemaking

I posted two or

[lace] pillow answers

2012-01-23 Thread Sue
Thank you, so many amazing answers which I am managing to take a swift scan
through today. We are busy preparing food for tomorrow evening as we have
invited some friends over. Not sure it was the right choice mind you, seems
mad spending parts of 3 days, including my birthday tomorrow preparing food
for one meal. Not sure if I will get my hand made, hand lace edged napkins
out though.

Still I have managed to prepare the next lot of bobbins and should get that
onto the flat pillow (will measure to remind myself whether its 20 or 22
inches diameter) and see how it works up. I will be doing quite a few
sewings and using my new square bobbins, so everything in one this time.
That might well help me decide what my next move should be, invest in a new
pillow, flat or domed or play with the old ones.
So thank you all so much for your wisdom and ideas:-)

One name for the polyethylene foam is Ethafoam. Our group in Calgary
has been looking into getting a sheet of it. It comes in different

The only supplier in Calgary will only sell wholesale to businesses so
we are looking at ordering some though someone who purchases it from
them. If any of you know which density is best I'd appreciate your

Have you checked out Industrial Plastics, or is that the supplier you mean?
I bought an endcut of a plank (sheet) from their shop in Victoria BC a
while back - it is blue, several inches thick. I don't know its tech.
specifications, just that when I felt it, I decided it was right for making
into a lace pillow. An important thing is that it is closed cell foam,
which is self-mending. Koratex is another product that is closed cell and
available retail (e.g. at IP) but I haven't seen it to compare.

For constructing a block pillow, an entire block doesn't have to be
ethafoam, only the topmost part where the pins are going to go in - so a
block can be constructed of two layers, the lower one can be styrofoam or
similar, wood even (although I prefer something lightweight), with the
closed cell foam on top, a layer of wool over that, and a cotton covering
 sewn around.

Another source rather than expensive industrial - a roll of camper's
sleeping foam is perfect. I've made cookie pillows from it by stacking
concentric circles (smallest at the bottom), and temporary pillow tops for
existing pillows where for example I have another work in progress but want
to do something else in a hurry without removing the other.

I make and use a lot of pillows, have made some up from kickboards for
the swimming pool and packing for electronics.

This is in the US, but there are two reviewers who did use it for lace
pillows. I bought a sheet, but have not tried cutting or using yet. It
seems firm without being hard. They shipped it flat. I plan to make blocks
with it.

http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2078p=Q_Iw=2078#pr-header-2078

Also, I have a cookie pillow that I got on ebay that was beginning to get a
bit squishy on top. I cut two circles of wool and put it over the top,
fastening them down on the sides with pins. I then pulled the cover over all
of it very tightly and it looks like it will work fine.

[lace] Spider silk cape

2012-01-23 Thread scotlace
Seen on BBC Breakfast programme a buttery yellow cape made from the silk of
spiders from Madagascar. Information from the programme:-

The spiders are captured in the morning, attached to a harness and the silk
thread is gathered for about 20 minutes after which the unharmed spider is
released back into the wild. Then the thread is spun. (No information about
any process between gathering the thread and spinning it.)

The garment is a basic cape without any shaping, simply a back and split
front. But the close ups showed beautiful embroidery with the same thread.
the theme of the embroidery is spiders. The cape is on show at the Victoria
and Albert museum in London.

[lace-chat] Soup Stew enhancer

2012-01-23 Thread pene piip

Dear fellow Arachneans,

Until recently I would usually throw out the vinegar mix leftover from
the jar of pickled cucumbers.
I prefer the picnic or bread better variety. Lately once the pickles
are eaten, I've sliced up a fresh
cucumber reused the mixture by adding a little fresh vinegar. On
Sunday evening I was making soup with some basic vegetables a chunk of
ham, decided to throw in the dregs of the pickled cucumbers.
I added some pasta to fill up my guys, my soup with mustard seeds was
quite deliciously different.

My guys like green olives on pizza! So I had also discovered a while ago
that I could add the vinegar

from the can of green olives to tenderize the tougher cuts of meat.
I thought I'd share these ideas with my fellow chefs/cooks.

Warm regards from
Pene in a cold Tartu, Estonia (currently -8C colder weather forecast)

best). Then add a generous tablespoon of crushed garlic and some
cracked black pepper corns. Once you've eaten the cheese simply add
more cubes to the oil and top up when necessary (about once a year!!!)

I'm addicted to sun dried and sun blush tomatoes but all that olive oil that
is left ... I use it to cook my onions off for stews and pasta dishes as it
has herbs in it and the taste of the tomatoes.

Frugal eh!!

 Dear Friends,

 Until recently I
would usually throw out the vinegar mix leftover from the jar of pickled
cucumbers.

I'm not sure how many realize that whatever you put under oil
cannot go off. snipped

When I lived in New York, decent colby wasn't to be had for
love or money, not even in the specialty cheese shop. Here
almost any colby is edible, but honestly-sharp cheddar for
seasoning can be found only rarely.

So when we came out for a visit once a year, I would take
home a whole horn of County Line. (This was before Beatrice
bought out County line and cheapened the product.)

Now and again I would use a piece of dental floss and two
pencils to cut a wheel off the horn (Score a line around the
cheese with a paring knife, put the floss in the score, pull
on the ends.) Then I would butter the newly-cut surface to
keep the horn from spoiling.

I give in - what's colby? What's a horn? And what's County Line?
