RE: [lace] lace magazines/membership
Hi fellow Arachnids, The magazines I subscribe to are; Lace and the Young Lacemaker (both from the Lace Guild, UK) and Lacemaking (the magazine of the Lace Society, UK) with articles, book reviews, patterns & news from the world of lace. The Lace Express with patterns and eye candy but no articles at all. Vuelta y Cruz which is brilliant as it helps my Spanish study as it is written in Spanish and English. This has articles on lace, patterns as well as series of lessons for a particular type of lace. And lastly but not least OIDFA which lacks the frequent patterns found in the others but which has more internationally wide ranging articles than the others. All of them have things to offer which are useful to lace makers. I know it seems a lot, but I share with my best friend who is also a lace maker ;-) Happy lace making (and lace-reading) Joepie, East Sussex, UK, where spring has sprung at last. The temperatures are rising nicely and we have had a couple of really nice (dry) days. HURRAY! I have just joined OIDFA so I am looking forward to getting their publication. Other than that I read the IOLI Bulletin and the Piecework. [lace] IOLI convention classes
I am happy to say I received class confirmation for my first choice! I will be learning about various needlelace techniques in the Needlelace practicium with Laurie Waters. I was originally bummed that Kumiko wasn't teaching Binche again this year because I would have had plenty of room for a lace pillow in the car for the drive to Indy. But it will be nice to travel "light"! Anita Hansen Cedar Rapids, Iowa - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Kant lace magazine
By far my favorite lace publication is Kant magazine from Kantcentrum! It is in Dutch as it is from Belgium, however it comes with supplement pages which contain English and other language translations. I love that nearly (if not every) issue has a Binche design or two! There are also other techniques. Very clever Torchon mats! There is usally more than one design in each issue that I would love to make. It is a high quality, colorful magazine. I highly recommend it! Anita Hansen Cedar Rapids, Iowa - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I have not received your messages Gon. I get the Digest, and have not seen them - or your query about are they getting though - , so there must be a glitch along the way. I enjoyed being reminded of the next pattern that you used to send. You do a wonderful job, and a big thank you. Janice I got my first choice class - Hooray!! For the first time ever - I am having a tatting class! Hopefully it will help me improve a bit!! I have had help from friends - Noelene being one of them, when we met at a weekend "retreat" last year!, - but I have never had a formal class in tatting, so I am looking forward to it. I have come back to the craft fresh, and am enjoying learning all the new techniques that have evolved more recently!! I must find something easy but interesting to do on the plane as it will be a long, boring day otherwise!! I have not had my Bulletin yet either! âDear Gon, i have missed your postings and have enjoyed receiving your weekly challenges and awesome examples. thank you and please be assured you are well appreciated. unfortunately, i did not receive your inquiries and not sure why. we corresponded the time i had difficulty with getting the example for a couple of weeks in the transition of your changes but you were most helpful to me. thank you again and, i especially, would greatly appreciate your continuance. thanks, Jeri, for your kind words. i have incurred the lack of "please and thank you" in our daily lives these days. i am gratified, tho, that with the bookmark exchange, i have been thanked for organizing it. i incurred the blessing of such a great response this year that it speaks of appreciation two-fold. it is amazing what these little words do to one's spirit. thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences. also, a thank you to those who ask questions as it triggers memory and/or creativity for me. i mostly respond to individuals and not the group as i am not usually sharing knowledge - i often wonder if i even have any - but i do try to be upbeat and positive in all situations and am thankful that the postings have not been negative in the last months.â Hugs, Lin and the Mali *â*Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. [lace-chat] Re: [lace] Keeping Arachne a Vital Lace News Resource
I have just realised that I haven't seen any of your messages since February - and certainly none asking if the messages were being received. I was very happily and diligently downloading your patterns every time I saw a message about them, and have them all saved up till 2016 week 7. I'm afraid I have been too busy in the last few months to notice what wasn't happening and been barely keeping up with what is. I am very grateful for your lace patterns, and also for your weekly reminders that a new one is up, and hope that you will continue doing so. [lace] Gifts - Why we should say Thank You
Dear Gon, This message was received in Maine. I know exactly how you feel, Gon. You take time - I am sure it is a few hours of thought, sometimes making a sample, getting instructions organized, and computer work to get each message organized and set to go. You share something that others on Arachne would sell, but which are free to Arachne members. Has anyone made enough yardage for something special? Write about it. Everyone: Our manners could be better. There are about 1,000 members of Arachne. Most of the replies to my message have been from regular correspondents. I know that Lace Fairy (Lori) often needed appreciation for all her work, but did not get it. In the beginning, she was working 18 hours a day on it. Let me boldly repeat: She was working 18 hours a day on Lace Fairy! My reaction is that surely some people could jot down some notes the next time you attend an event that is lace-related, and report to Arachne. I know others who give much are rarely acknowledged. Many write for the lace bulletins published for lace groups around the world. Why not tell them you like what they made or wrote about? I cannot believe your upbringing did not include sharing and a few words of thanks to anyone who gave you a gift. I proofread a very nice newsletter published here in New England. The editor is one of the best. She spends many hours on a quarterly newsletter of 20 pages. She does not receive feedback. On Arachne, we get to know each other better if we participate by correspondence. You make new friends by joining some of the bookmark/Christmas card exchanges. Have you thanked the people who organize the lace exchanges? Just wondering. There are a lot of pairings, and it is only the regulars who report back to Arachne. You may be busy, but there is always time to say thank you. You do not have to buy fancy paper and envelopes, find a pen, write, get dressed up, commute to a post office, and stand in line to buy stamps - to perform this social activity. It can be done at midnight, for Heaven's sake. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 5/5/2016 2:50:06 A.M. [lace] Elisa Ricci books
I thought I had sent this a couple of days ago, but apparently without success: The two volumes of Elisa Ricci's Old Itallian Laces have been sent off to the Museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe. (http://www.internationalfolkart.org/exhibitions/exhibition-details?eventID=2 833). It is very gratifying to have found a home for these two beautiful books which now will be available to anyone to see. They show quite a few lace books in their catalogue, and are apparently interested in adding to their collection. Just to back up a bit: I found these two beautiful books at a local used-book store in Portland, Maine, and the librarian at the Portland Public Library did a fine job of restoring them to perfect condition. And as a suggestion to all who might want to donate lace books to a library or museum who might want them, it is possible to place a value on them and use that as a tax deduction. An interesting adventure with a very satisfying conclusion! - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Dear arachnians, This is just to thank Antje very much for her flattering words, but most of the merit should go to the teasurer of OIDFA in Spain, Ãngel DomÃnguez, who is an outstanding male bobbin lace maker and an even better manager. By the way, has anyone of you thought of becoming an OIDFA member? It is really worth because it does not cost too much but you get plenty for the money spent!! For the yearly fee you get at least 4 magazines in English and French with a lot of interesting information about lace. This year we are having the OIDFA congress in Ljubljana (Slovenia) with many excursions to bobbin lace centers in the country, courses and conferences among other interesting issues. The next one will be in Bruges in 2018. For more information, please have a look at this link: https://www.oidfa.com/index.html.en Since we all are a bit 'crazy' about lace I thought you might like to know about OIDFA... Re: [lace] Keeping Arachne a Vital Lace News Resource
Hello Gon. I always try to keep attention on Arachne messages, and your messages with a new edging or insertion have not arrived for a long time. The fact that I haven't said anything about it does not mean that I don't miss them: I think many of us have many things to do, attend many emails a day, and when one email, even an important one, is missing, we are not conscious of it. Not because of lack of interest, but surely because of an overload of other matters and work. So, please, please, please, keep posting: and from time to time.. give us a warning asking if we are receiving and liking your patterns. Which we certainly do but sometimes forget to tell you! You are doing a fantastic work and we really enjoy it! Thank you very much! Greetings form a cloudy Spain, with dust in the air from Africa! To Cindy and all Yes, I too am more of a lurker, but love all your messages. We had our first proper Spring day this week, so I am out and about in the garden and greenhouse: potting, seeding, clearing weeds etc. whilst husband is decorating from top to bottom. Why cannot he do one room at the time? 4 months old puppy Border Collie Tilly is "helping" both of us. Not much time for lace, though tonight I will: Th eve is my lace fix, and two friends come to my house and we chat and make lace. Still working on Christine Springett's Wisteria pattern, but have just turned the last corner. Also have a Torchon pattern for a whirly thingy on another pillow which I take to local group when we meet once a month. At a recent lace fair I bought a set of her latest Christmas ornament patterns, really beautiful ones, so must have a go at some of those. Have a great day.
