Hi Joel,

What I think would be minimum (and can be done) is:
 Confirm each crash on 5.0;
 _Ensure_ that each has easy steps;

For the most straight forward ones that have easy steps we can just mark
them as critical + highest - signaling that they are easy to reproduce
and everything is there for devs to tackle them.

I foresee a problem with recognizing Base crashers as important in the
above scenario (I haven't checked to see whether there are any in the list).

By their very nature, database crashers usually require more effort and
more steps to reproduce than say, a formatting crasher bug in Writer or
Calc, or a call to some function, due, among others, to the following :

- Java : as ever, often problematic to debug from within gdb/lldb for
the casual QAer - the internal JVM signal catcher often baulks without
any really useful information when using debug builds ;

- the variety of different db engines we support - we have two embedded
engine possibilites, plus all the external possible backends and
associated driver problems to factor in ;

- the Report Builder - more Java, but funnily enough, most of the
crashers in this seem to relate to changes in other areas of the code
(Writer, Calc, OUString, configuration files).

None of that could be considered easy.

Yes. They are provided by volunteers who get to choose how to configure
what they build. If you want more variety, you are free to offer
differently configured builds for upload. Or to submit a change that
reduces the (much too large) number of configure-time options we have...
I see no problem in leaving out optional features. That is why they are

Absolutely, and I personally agree, but my question is more whether
there is a way for a user of the dailies to easily know what is/isn't in

Say I wanted to kitchen sink LO on OSX and provide a TB, how would a

Le 14/03/2014 11:45, Caolán McNamara a écrit :

Hi Caolan,

Judging from the posts I have seen on the user list since LO came into
existence, there are still some use cases where CUPS does not provide
the required support and people need to be able to fall back to spadmin
for printing.

The fact that spadmin could be used to add Type1 PS fonts, which are no
longer supported, if I understand correctly, has also been, and
continues to be, an issue that crops up on the user list (and possibly
also in BZ) for some people.

The problem as I see it is that there are so many printers out there
being used by LO users, some of them quite old now (yet tried and
trusted, especially in business), for which CUPS support has been
dropped or curbed over time, and it is handy to be able to pop in one's
own PPD to just get the job done.

From my own experience, the switch to CUPS ONLY by default caused the
loss of being able to print from two different trays in one document
over the network, i.e. have page 1 print out on header paper in a first
or manual tray, and then subsequent pages from the follow-on paper tray.
This could previously be set up in a PPD and included via spadmin,
including on Mac OSX. I have not yet found a way to this with CUPS,
having been reduced to separate printing steps for each set of pages.

I have no idea whether such use cases are still representative of the
mainstream usage of LO, but it is certainly around in businesses with
legacy printers that are still functioning. I have used HP LJs (4050n,
2500dtn, Apple LaserWriter) in business scenarii in the past with OOo
and the ability to fiddle with the PPD to get things working right was
the saving grace on many occasion.

was no removal of support for those. The add fonts ability of spadmin
was removed in 2012 and prior to that was only visible if your system
didn't support fontconfig which is a practically impossible situation
for many years now so I'd like to understand that comment a little more.

Not off-hand, I'd have to trawl through the LO user mailing list - the
problems might have been linked to a particular OS or particular Type1
fonts, I don't remember exactly now.

This could previously be set up in a PPD and included via spadmin,
 including on Mac OSX.

I'm a little baffled, spadmin on MacOSX ?, what version included spadmin
on MacOSX ? We certainly don't do it now.

Yes, I wasn't talking about LO, but during OOo times, before the switch
to CUPS printing, this was possible.

If there are cases where fiddling with the ppd manually and adding that
via spadmin worked, would not the same solution work by using the system
tools to set the replacement ppd for the printer ? e.g. using
system-config-printer under Fedora and provide PPD file

Unfortunately, I have no idea. My comments were made not to discourage
you from going ahead with your plan, just to relate what I had seen on
the LO mailing list and my own previous experience of before/after the
switch to CUPS printing, both on Linux and OSX.

The last one, in particular (seocnd to last comment), provides a
workaround for creating AFM/PFM files on Linux, but note that this
didn't used to be a requirement, before the switch to CUPS printing was
made - previously, Type1 fonts were recognized in OOo automagically.

Hi Stephan,

I filed that issue because the re-worked start center originally
instantiated the template data (which is what takes such a long time)
always, even if you did not open the Template Manager. (That is,
displaying the start center was always unacceptably slow if you have
lots of templates.) That bug has since been fixed (the template data is
now only instantiated on demand when opening the Template Manager
dialog, when you click on the start center Templates button or choose
File - New - Templates), but it may be OK to re-use that issue to
track that opening the Template Manager dialog can be slow.

Cheers, I've added my comments to it.

Yes, I agree, but after having read your section in the Base Guide on
setting up a firebird db as an external datasource, I can safely say
that this is not something basic noob database users are going to be
doing any time soon. It might be OK and rational for people like you and
I, but the whole idea of integrating Firebird was to make it as capable,
or more capable than Hsqldb, without having to rely on Java and the
inherent data insecurity of embedded hsqldb. At present, it is easier to
set up an external hsqldb connection, or even an external H2 connection,
than it is to set up an external Firebird server and LO connection.

So the internal Firebird works only, when you set Enable experimental
features. At this moment the old HSQLDB would work much better as the
 internal Firebird.

Agreed, and hopefully it will stay experimental until these basic user
issues are resolved.

[Libreoffice-qa] Firebird - creating auto-increment fails via Tools - SQL

2013-12-14 Thread Alex Thurgood
Hi,

Since the GUI for interfacing with Firebird doesn't currently enable
creating a working autoincrement column (there is already an open bug
report for that), I've been following this Firebird FAQ :

http://www.firebirdfaq.org/faq29/

but am getting stuck at the passage below :

Now we create a trigger:

set term !! ;
CREATE TRIGGER T1_BI FOR T1
ACTIVE BEFORE INSERT POSITION 0
AS
BEGIN
if (NEW.ID is NULL) then NEW.ID = GEN_ID(GEN_T1_ID, 1);
END!!
set term ; !!

One thing to note is that the built-in Firebird support currently seems
to require that, when using Tools - SQL utility, you have to type in
each command separately and then execute them separately. In other
words, you don't seem to be able to type in several DDL commands,
separate them with colons, and have the statement execute correctly.

I have tried the above, both with and without the set term statements,
and when using set term, I get an error about term not being
recognized, and without I get an error of the type below :

15: firebird_sdbc error:
*Dynamic SQL Error
*SQL error code = -104
*Unexpected end of command - line 5, column 54
caused by
'isc_dsql_prepare'

which probably refers to the presence of the semi-colon in the line
if (NEW.ID is NULL)...

So, I guess the question is : is this actually supposed to even work in
the current state of affairs ?

If it isn't, how are users supposed to create/set triggers for
autoincrement with the embedded firebird db ?

Build switches for mysql connector extension - Mac OSX

2013-11-19 Thread Alex Thurgood
Hi all,

I used to be able to build a functional mysql connector on MacOSX by
using the build switch :

--enable-ext-mariadb-connector

However, the inclusion of a build-time downloaded libmariadb library was
stopped after this caused crashes on Window

If you run the above switch now on OSX, you get the following message :

libmariadb is known to be broken as of 2013-10; use libmysqlclient

and configure stops without completing.

So the million dollar question now is : which switch is to be used now ?

On my Linux systems, I don't seem to have any problem building the
connector extension, I imagine because libmysqlclient is included on the
machines in question (because I'm running mysql client and server),
along with libmysqlcppconn.

However, on Mac OSX, these are not included by default. I have
downloaded the MySQL C connector library source, and also have a copy of
libmysqlcppconn for OSX, but how do I tell autogen.sh to use them ?

I have tried using :

--with-system-mysql-cppconn=/path/to/lib/

and removing the --enable-ext-mariadb-connector

but if I do this, the connector fails to get built. I see a mysql
connector directory in the extensions directory, but it doesn't contain
any of the libs and isn't assembled into an OXT, unlike say, NLPSolver.
I suspect this is due to the externalisation of these extensions.

MySQL Connector Extension Build on Linux 32bit

2013-10-16 Thread Alex Thurgood
As some of you will probably know by now due, I attempt to provide the

At present, the 32bit Linux build doesn't work on other people's

What I'm failing to understand is why this is happening. The basic build
systems are based on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring, and use exactly the same build
switches, the only difference being that the 64bit OS is Linux Mint 15
Olivia (based on Ubuntu 13.04), and the 32bit is a default Ubuntu 13.04
Raring. Something is obviously failing to be included during the 32bit
build, but what ?

But what was the story with mysql-connector-ooo, these days apparently
enabled via a switch called --enable-ext-mariadb-connector? That switch
is off by default, and it is not mentioned in any distro-configs/*.conf,
so appears to be effectively dead code. Or was that the extension that
cannot be included in installation sets for whatever reason (and is only
included in our source tree to make it easy to build it)? I guess
Lionel knows.

To the extent that I can get a successful build, I have been building on
Mac OSX (and to a certain extent on Linux 32/64 for testing purposes),
near enough on a daily basis, with a kitchen sink approach to the
extensions because no-one else does them - certainly not TDF.

I rely on that mysql/mariadb connector extension being buildable via
that switch as the connector extension is by far the most capable
solution for me (and I am not alone judging by the requests on the
user's list) for accessing a mysql/mariadb database, rather than say,
using JDBC or ODBC. If the plan is now to retire that switch, needless
to say, I will not be very happy, unless there is some other failsafe,
guaranteed, multi-OS/arch way of doing it.

The same goes with the other extensions. Perhaps it is not in TDF's
interest to have all that spurious extension code lying around, but in
that case IMHO a clear decision should be taken to either exclude it
from the repo, have it hosted separately with instructions on how to
build/install. Honestly, if we are no longer going to care for the ext
extensions that are currently in the repo, why have them at all ?

I'm merely attempting to understand the reasoning into the
decision-making process that determines whether or not an extension
makes it into the main code, and at the moment I'm at a loss to
understand how that reasoning works, as it all seems rather opaque to
me. As regards licensing of the mysql/mariadb connector code, my
understanding was that we now build with LGPL code completely, or did
this not happen in the end ?

Sorry, if I appear a bit lost here, but I am.

Am rebuilding on Linux 32bit and OSX64bit after a fresh pull from master
after your changes went in, so at least those should be ok once they're
finished. I'll not be attempting the Linux 64bit til later anyway, after
a fresh pull from master again.

As for 4.1, I have to suss out how to switch cleanly between branches
with git (i.e. rtfm) before I start on that.

Virtually nobody writes help these days, because of the format that is

fraction of the new features has suitable help, and we need to change
 this.

If this can be achieved, it would be a huge thorn out of my side. Trying
to change things in the current help setup is a helpwriter's nightmare.
I'm not a big fan of wikis, but at least what you are describing sounds
more accessible than the current xml jumping through hoops and rings of
fire test that one has to go through to actually get anything new in.

But - and that is important - we of course need to do it in a way that
fits everyone, l10n most of all :-) So as I assured you many times, no
translation will be lost. We only have to agree what fits you best; and
before you answer that you want nothing else than Pootle, it would be
good to test what Markus is about to set up; I am sure he'll write you
more about that when it is ready for testing - and it will be up to you
to decide if it is acceptable for you, or tell him what features are
missing. You will _not_ have to translate entire pages, the system is
going to be very similar to Pootle, based on

I, for one, look forward to seeing how things develop.

there via extras/Package_extensions.mk. Again, their content should
rather be unzipped into sub-directories of the instdir share/extensions

Seems to me that as an amateur builder of master on a near daily basis
with as many extensions as actually seem to work, it is easier for me to
continue using :

make dev-install -o build

At least that, for the time being, still continues to register the

Extensions no longer registered in master Linux 32bit

2013-09-30 Thread Alex Thurgood

Hi,

For some reason, extensions no longer appear to be registered as
components since the switch to instdir.

If I open Tools Extensions, the Extension Manager shows an empty window.

Running unopkg.bin from instdir also indicates that no extensions are
registered.

However, I see them in
solver/unxlngi6.pro/bin/

and also some of them in
workdir/unxlngi6.pro/Extension

Could anyone spin up a TB to build Windows (possibly OSX) master using JDK
7, or possibly even Open JDK 8 beta (which has been marked M7 Feature
Complete as of 2013/06/13 ) and build Libreoffice with J2SE 7 classes?

And, if not too complicated to put up a TB with that capability, it would be
very helpful to test native Java 1.7 bytecode to determine if that
resolves some of the JAB issues of fdo#58995. And think it would also be
interesting to see if that helps the Report Builder and HSQLDB issues. And
maybe some positive impact on the OSX side as well.

FWIW, there is already a report in BZ about Java 1.7 not being
recognized in OSX 10.8. Stock OSX 10.8 apparently doesn't come with a
JVM anymore out of the box, and the only available maintained JVM for
OSX is 1.7, which in essence poses a problem for any and all
functionality within LO that makes Java calls. I don't know how the new
OSX buildbot deals with this or what version of OSX it is running.

On upgraded OSX machines, i.e. ones that have gone through the 10.6,
10.7 to 10.8 cycle,we still have the maintained JVM provided by Apple
(1.6_xx). These are just my observations, perhaps others can shed more
light.

AFAIK, there is nothing about the MVC paradigm and its application in
database controls in the helpcontent, unless perhaps there is a mention
in the Basic programming section (but I doubt it). The database help in
helpcontent2 is spartan at best, and I don't ever recall seeing anything

Python scripts other than Logo missing in master build

Version: 4.1.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: ec2b98f4bcbe3b8a47b3b2b7127ac608d83ac6e

the Python scripts are not available either via the Macro management UI,
or via the command line, only the LibreLogo scripts show up.

The Enable Experimental Features options box is ticked.

Looking in
/instdir/unxlngi6.pro/share/Scripts/python/

shows that the scripts have not been copied over during build.

Dan Lewis did this for Linux 32 and 64 bit, I think and made them

Nothing was done for OSX, possibly one of my older ones (from pre-4.1
dev builds) might still work with LO 4.0.x.

Nothing was done for Windows and LO 4.0.x

IIRC someone was working on a new connector using the (compatible)
MariaDB connector library that has a sensible license that we can
distribute built-in [ which would be ideal ].

Not sure of the progress of any of that though, if you're interested -
it's worth keeping note of whomever was doing the work so you can poll
them later - can you dig all of that out of the archives and follow up ?

For LO 4.1, Fridrich has done the work for libmariadb integration, and
so far as I can see this builds and (still) works on OSX, Linux
32/64bit, and possibly Windows, as he was originally focussing on
getting it to build in Windows from what I recall.

I don't know whether the buildbots automatically build the connector or
not (because I don't build with the defaults on master), my guess is
probably not, at least not on OSX.

I am not aware of any separate MariaDb connectors for future LO4.1 on
Windows, or any other OS for that matter, that is currently available
for download.

Perhaps Fridrich can tell us more.

But when I searched for mysql-connector on the command line (I ran
sudo updatedb first). I found a folder named
lu17qwu9.tmp_/mysql-connector-ooo-1.0.1-linux-intel.oxt. This is located at
/home/dan/.config/libreoffice/4/user/uno_packages/cache/uno_packages/. I
had earlier also installed the same mysql-native-connector on LO
3.6.5.2. If it matters, doing this search I found a similar folder in
/home/dan/.config/libreoffice/4/user/uno_packages/cache/uno_packages/:
luxhljqk.tmp_/mysql-connector-ooo-1.0.1-linux-intel.oxt/.

AFAIK, you can only have one mysql connector in any given LO
configuration. When you start your LO-dev version, and look in the
Extensions Manager, which version of the LO connector do you see ? The
1.0.1 version is AOO, the LO version is currently at 1.0.2.

So, the question is this: Where is the mysql-connector that was
suppose to be built with LO?

Did you look in the directories I pointed you to in my previous mail ?

directly), I could run the query correctly. The Balance column then
contained the same values as when I ran the query using LO 3.6.5.2.
I also added comments similar to these in the bug report.

This sounds like a problem in the parser. I seem to recall that there
have been a few changes recently in the YACC/FLEX components that I
think are used by LO's SQL parser, maybe something got broken by
accident here.

The connection to the data source New Database5 could not be established.

SQL Status: 08001

libmysqlcppconn.so is invalid: missing the driver factory function.

In the list of extensions, the connector appears as registered and
functioning (no error indication in the UI).

My build uses the --with-system-mysql switch

I was commenting more from the perspective of someone who went through
the rigmarole of having many of his bug reports reclassified and the
demoralising effect that can have on a contributor. Personally, I have
learned to live with it, but that doesn't mean that I think it is a good
idea generally.

As for my own reports, I understand that developers may not have the
time or resources to commit to looking at any given report, but as you
say, these are probably mostly not in the NEEDINFO status anyway. Some
of the reports which I have filed, confirmed or added myself to, and
which are currently in NEEDINFO status (mostly database or printing
issues) are due mainly to being unable to test the alleged buggy
behaviour on Mac OSX, either because I don't have the corresponding
equipment to test with (e.g Brother printers) or OSX's system security
privileges preventing me from setting up db servers to test on, whereas
these used to work in previous versions of OSX. These particular
problems are independent of LO, but that does not mean that the LO bugs
per se are invalid (since, at the time the report was filed, the problem
did occur). Sweeping them away, even with a 3 strikes and you're out
policy, will still not make them any less valid. Although I might get
disgruntled with this approach, and feel helpless to do anything about
it, I can live with it (up to a certain point). I'm not convinced that
other, more casual bug reporters, would think the same way.

Something in one of these 2 mysql commits now causes a build failure on
Mac OSX, because the configure macro forces a search for
libmyqsl16.dylib in the wrong place.

On OSX, you have to build the connector using the --with-libmysql-path
switch as the source code libraries are not supplied by Apple in its
version of mysql server (they have to be sourced from mysql).

Additional number formats dialog screwed in master

2013-01-21 Thread Alex Thurgood
Hi all,

While playing around with date formatting in a Writer document in my
master build , I came across something which is probably the result of
UI rework. The additional number formats dialog appears to have been
replaced by a blank dialog containing only three buttons on the left
hand side.

New Writer document
Insert Field Date
Right mouse button click on the date, choose Fields in the context menu
Scroll down the format dialog to Additional formats
A new dialog is displayed which is blank and contains only the buttons
OK, Cancel and Help.
