[LincolnTalk] Welcome to school year

2022-09-07 Thread Susan Taylor
The Lincoln School Committee welcomes you to the 2022-2023 school year. We hope
all of your children had a great first few days.

We also hope that you can join us for our first School Committee meeting of the
school year tomorrow (September 8th) at 6pm via our Zoom live-stream
.
The meeting will also be recorded for future broadcast on local access
television and at the Lincoln TV website
.
Lincoln TV is also tentatively planning to broadcast live on Comcast Channel 8
and Verizon Channel 33.

This year, the School Committee is focused on setting the District and future
School Committees up for long-term success. Our key goals include: supporting
the roll-out of the Portrait of a Learner and the continued work to become an
anti-racist district; working with the administration to develop metrics for
how the School Committee will measure the district’s progress across academics,
social emotional learning, and a sense of belonging; and reviewing and
updating School Committee policies. We also look forward to working with the
Lincoln Educators Association on their upcoming contract renewal.

We are all looking forward to a productive and enjoyable year of in-person
learning in our state-of-the-art buildings. Although we recognize that there
are many challenges ahead, we are confident that this school year will not have
the obstacles presented over the last two years due to COVID and building
construction.

We wish you and your family an exciting and fulfilling school year.

On behalf of the School Committee,

John MacLachlan, chair

[LincolnTalk] School opening welcome

2022-09-07 Thread Susan Taylor
from Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Becky McFall:
Welcome to the 2022 – 2023 School Year!

It was a soggy start yesterday morning but the heavy rains weren’t enough to
dampen the spirits of our students and staff who showed up eager and excited to
begin the school year. We are looking forward to a fantastic school year
ahead. The Lincoln School construction project is drawing to a close, and it
was amazing to welcome our preschool and K-4 students into the school for the
first time. It was so much fun to greet students and see their eyes widen as
they entered the Learning Commons space. Several students expressed surprise
that the school looked like a totally different and new school even though the
footprint remained the same. For me, it is an incredible feeling to see the
last of our schools renovated/rebuilt. This is the start of my eleventh year
as the Superintendent of the Lincoln Public Schools, and I am thrilled to be
able to say that over the last ten years we have accomplished the goal of
providing innovative 21st Century Schools for all of our students.

We can’t wait to show off the school and all that it has to offer. There will
be an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on the afternoon of Friday, October
28th, and the school will be open for tours that evening and on Saturday,
October 29th. More information will be provided.

This year we are pleased to return to pre-pandemic conditions in our schools.
While we know that COVID is not gone and we must remain diligent in reducing
the risk of viral transmission among our students and staff, it feels great to
be able to open up our schools to families and visitors again. At this time,
there are no restrictions on school activities including field trips, concerts
and plays, and enrichment opportunities within our schools. The Lincoln Board
of Health encourages the wearing of masks as a primary way to mitigate the
contraction of COVID-19. Masks are recommended but not required in our
schools, and everyone should feel free to choose to wear a mask at any time
without experiencing negative repercussions from other members of our
communities.

Vaccination is highly recommended for all eligible students. All Lincoln
Public Schools employees are required to be vaccinated. With a new bivalent
vaccine being made available soon, I will be working with the Lincoln Board of
Health and our employee associations to update our vaccine mandate. More
information will be provided to employees soon. Once the new vaccines are
available, the Town of Lincoln and the LPS School District will offer
vaccination clinics for students and employees.

COVID-19 is not the only virus that we need to be concerned about. Everyone is
strongly encouraged to get vaccinated against influenza. Please mark your
calendar to get your flu shot.

All the Best,
Becky

*Masks now optional in the Lincoln Public Library*

The Lincoln Board of Health (BOH) voted to rescind the town-wide indoor
mask mandate effective Monday, March 14, 2022, in response to substantially
improved and positively trending public health data, including Lincoln’s
high vaccination rate.

Residents with weakened immune systems or at increased risk of severe
Covid-19 disease because of age or medical conditions, or who have a
household member at such increased risk, are advised by the Lincoln BOH and
the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) to continue to wear a
mask when indoors other than in their home, even if they are vaccinated.

We encourage the public to continue to wear masks in accordance with their
own comfort level and in compliance with the DPH guidelines cited above.
Private establishments may continue to *require masks upon entry.*

*Updated indoor mask use recommendation as of April 14, 2022*: “Due to
recent data showing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the Board of
Health members voted last night to strongly recommend that people wear
masks in public indoor spaces until early May as we see how the infection
rate from the new BA-2 variant evolves over the next few weeks after spring
vacation.”

Re: [LincolnTalk] Jim Cunningham's Passing

2022-09-07 Thread Bijoy Misra
Friends,
I had the pleasure of working with Jim for a few years.
A bright man with utter sincerity, Jim Cunnigham was an icon
of diligence. Brilliant, friendly and humble, Jim was noble
at heart, an angel on earth. I loved his personality and
admired his workmanship. Jim brought heaven to earth
and is back where he came from.
Peace!

[LincolnTalk] Jim Cunningham's Passing

2022-09-07 Thread Elder, Peggy
In Remembrance of Jim Cunningham

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of our
colleague and friend Jim Cunningham. Born, raised and educated in Lincoln, Jim
was a devoted community volunteer. Jim single-handedly organized, implemented
and managed the Town's local cable television program, helping to increase
access to the activities of town government and other community events. Jim
possessed a keen engineering mind and a small-town sensibility about managing
budgets. Jim served for decades completely without compensation. We may not
see his like again. The Select Board used the occasion of the March, 2022
Annual Town Meeting to honor Jim by presenting him with the Annual Bright Light
award. The Board's remarks follow:

"Each year we present the bright light award to a resident or town staff member
whose contributions to our town deserve to be celebrated. Now if you have
ever come across Comcast channel 8 or Verizon channel 33 on your television,
you will quickly realize that Lincoln has its own vibrant cable tv channel. We
owe this great viewing alternative to CNN, Fox News or ESPN to our own Jim
Cunningham.

Jim was appointed to Lincoln's cable committee way back in 2002 and has served
as its chair for most of this time. As chair, Jim has been our point person
for license negotiations with our cable providers. More importantly, Jim has
built our local cable channel from the ground up. An electrical engineer by
education and training, Jim designed and helped install our cable programming
infrastructure. He not only manages the technology and equipment, but also
does most of the filming and production that allows the town to broadcast many
key meeting (such as select board and school committee meetings), special
events, and lectures, providing a truly valuable service to the town. Jim
spends many hours each week recording and broadcasting this town content for
our enjoyment.

We on the Select Board are especially appreciative of how Jim always manages to
film us from our good sides! Jim's technical know-how and passion for what he
does, which he has provided free of charge for many years, has saved the town
thousands upon thousands of dollars, as other communities have needed to create
full time employee positions for this work.

Born, raised, and educated here, Jim is immensely proud of his Lincoln roots.
And we could not be more proud and grateful to you, Jim, for all that you have
contributed to Lincoln. Please join me in giving Jim Cunningham a round of
applause as this year's bright light award recipient."

In recognition of Jim's service, the Board has asked that the flags on our Town
buildings be lowered next week to half-staff.

On behalf of Jim's many friends and colleagues,

Tim Higgins
Town Administrator
