[LincolnTalk] Hanscom Expansion Library Thursday evening 5:30-7:30

2024-05-22 Thread Anne Sobol
Hi,

I'll be at the Library tomorrow evening, Thursday, 5:30-7:30, available to
discuss the Hanscom expansion and why it's a bad idea, and to provide info
about filing public comment by June 14th. Every comment counts! I'll be in
the "Study Room" to the left of the main door.

Also, good to sign National Trust for Historic Preservation petition to
Governor Healey and US DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg who is over the FAA and
may have some sway re the expansion. The National Trust included Minuteman
National Park and Walden and nearby landmarks on the list of America's 11
Most Endangered Historic Places for 2024 on the basis of the threat posed
by the Hanscom Expansion. The National Trust has been remarkably successful
over the years in protecting places they put on their list.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Black Bear Sighting

2024-05-13 Thread Anne Sobol
To any person who felt I was accusing them of anything bad, *please accept
my humble apology.* It was when people started joking around, giving the
bear names, posting that video about a news show commenting on a bear
because there was nothing else of note to report on that I began to wonder.
And the photo of the bear standing up so tall with his ear clips looking
straight at the camera was unreal. This morning I started rummaging around
in the bear threads to see the other photos, and I realized the bear is
definitely real. I have two bird feeders and I like nothing more than to
look at birds. In the evening, the male cardinal now perches on top of the
pole where once a feeder used to be and looks towards my house. If there
were no real bear I could put my feeders back up. I was hoping there was no
real bear. Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Date for filing comments extended to June 14th, but better to file sooner
rather than later to ensure MEPA takes account of your comment before
issuing its ruling shortly after June 14th date. Also, June gets
complicated for many of us. Act now!

[LincolnTalk] Re Hanscom Boston Herald today 5/4/24

2024-05-04 Thread Anne Sobol
Op Ed by Chuck Collins, IPS

Imagine someone promising you could eat three banana split sundaes a day
and lose 50 lbs. in a month, no exercise required. You’d be skeptical,
right?

How about this one: Private developers proposing to double the amount of
hangar space for private luxury jets at Hanscom Field claim this will
reduce the number of private jet flights and reduce carbon emissions.

Independent research has debunked this. The question remains whether
Governor Maura Healey will stop this massive expansion from going forward.

A bit of background: The Massport-owned Hanscom Field outside Boston (not
the Air Force Base) is already New England’s second busiest airport after
Logan. It’s also the region’s largest private jet airport, with an
estimated 38,000 annual jet operations.

A year ago, two private developer firms submitted a joint proposal to
dramatically expand Hanscom’s private jet facilities. This March, they
submitted a Draft Environmental Impact statement (DEIR) claiming this
massive expansion will be “net zero” — and will somehow decrease flights
and emissions.

In the face of record temperature rises in 2023, there’s greater scrutiny
of luxury private jet travel. Private jet travel is perhaps the most
carbon-intensive form of travel on the planet, emitting 10 to 20 times more
pollution per passenger than commercial flights.

According to the developers, there’s an acute crisis of unhoused private
jets flying about looking for parking. Lack of hangar space, they contend,
means that private jets must drop their well-heeled passengers off at
Hanscom and then “ferry flight” to another regional airport for parking
(but not Boston Logan, which has no housing for private jets, nor space for
such housing). More hangars, they claim, could eliminate 3,543 ferry
flights a year.

Last fall, I co-authored a report that found that half the flights in and
out of Hanscom were to luxury and recreation destinations. Out of 31,599
private jet operations, we identified just one aircraft — making fewer than
20 trips — that fit the definition of a ferry flight. A private jet owned
by billionaire Arthur S. Demoulas regularly travels from Hanscom to Nashua.

Now another independent researcher, Industrial Economics, Inc., working
with a larger data set, has issued a report disputing the developers’
projection. They identify only 132 ferry flight reductions — which would be
offset by adding 6,000 flights a year, contributing an additional 150,000
tons of emissions.

Their conclusion: “Emissions associated with full utilization of planned
capacity far outweigh any emissions savings…by a factor of 950 to 3,900.”

Private jet consumption mirrors the growing concentration of wealth in the
hands of the richest 0.1%. The median wealth of a private jet owner,
according to WealthX, is $190 million. As inequality increases, demand for
private jets is surging — just look at the private jet traffic for the
Super Bowl, eclipse-watching, and the Masters golf tournament.

The private jet lobby claims that “sustainable aviation fuels” will reduce
its carbon footprint, which the developer’s proposal also mentions. But
while there is a tiny nugget of possibility for alternative sources of
fuel, there is currently no realistic or scalable alternative to
kerosene-based fuels that would meet current aviation needs, let alone
projections for future growth.

Statewide opposition to the project is growing — and some policy makers are
getting the message. “I know the destruction you folks intend to wreak on
Massachusetts and I resent it,” said state Senator Mike Barrett, who
represents the four towns where Hanscom is located.

“Please don’t erect these bogus environmental rationales for something that
has nothing whatsoever to do with relieving the crisis that faces us in
terms of climate,” Barrett said at the developers’ public hearing. “Just be
honest about it. This is all about becoming a little richer yourselves by
helping people even richer than you.”

The private jet lobby represents the most wealthy and powerful people on
the planet, so they’re used to getting their way. But don’t let their
lawyers and PR firms cloud your common sense.

The hard truth is you can’t eat three banana splits a day, sit on the
couch, and lose 50 lbs. And you can’t build a massive private jet facility
and save the planet.

*Chuck Collins directs the Program on Inequality and co-edits
Inequality.org at the Institute for Policy Studies. He’s a coauthor of the
IPS reports “High Flyers 2023: How Ultra-Rich Private Jet Travel Costs the
Rest of Us and Burns Up the Planet” and “Hanscom High Flyers: Private Jet
Excess Doesn’t Justify Airport Expansion.”*

Re: [LincolnTalk] Community Center and Last night at Twisted Tree DeCordova

2023-10-09 Thread Anne Sobol
Ruth Ann, that was certainly not my point!

First off, I was writing to describe a pleasant social occasion in hopes of
encouraging Twisted Tree and DeCordova to repeat such an opportunity. I also
hoped that people my age who read the post would think it sounded like fun &
might come to another such evening event.

In addition I was trying to say that when I have heard people talk about
opportunities for intergenerational contact as something to be gained from
co-locating COA and programs for kids in what is being proposed at Hartwell, I
haven’t been able to imagine what they were talking about.

Huhm, I’d be down there in the community space at new Comm Center Hartwell
hoping to bump into someone to talk to and young people would be picking up
their kids after work/school, heading home for dinner & family time, and they’d
stop & talk with this older woman lurking in the hall? I doubt it.

The was something relaxed & convivial about what happened at Twisted Tree
DeCordova. Was it that alcohol was an option? I didn’t have an alcoholic drink,
but others did. The event took place after work, early evening, kids invited, a
facility that engages the kids, parents keeping an eye on them, but not
required to be overly involved, drinks, deliberately going out somewhere for
purpose of making contact.

I went hoping to hang out with some people more or less my own age who had
chosen to go out in the early evening to connect. Didn’t really find them there
but maybe by describing my positive experience others would be encouraged to
come another time. And I was happily surprised to find myself enjoying an
intergenerational occasion.

I go to lots of Lincoln events including at COA. I’m a widow & new in town, I’m
hoping to make friends. Pricked by your response, I’ll try to go to more! I
hope this is clarifying!

[LincolnTalk] Community Center and Last night at Twisted Tree DeCordova

2023-10-07 Thread Anne Sobol
The Twisted Tree at DeCordova was open last night from 5-9. I arrived at 6
and was disappointed not to see anyone in my age group (over 75), but I
bought an interesting non-alcoholic drink and went out on the terrace to
mingle with the young adults and their beautiful, active children. A woman
with a lovely little daughter said she'd met me at the dump (how Lincoln!),
and we commenced to talk about how we had both grown up in Lincoln (I in
the '50's, she I think she said in the '90's). We both had lived in
California when Covid hit in 2020, and ended up moving back to Lincoln. She
told me about her work and we discussed how we found Lincoln after living
in California. She asked me for my contact info and we agreed to get
together for coffee in the future.

I went into the shop to get a plastic cup for the remains of my drink, and
struck up conversation with a man and his wife, both more or less my age,
who were waiting in line (the only other people my age I saw while I was
there, they in the company of their family and small children). He was into
the Hanscom expansion opposition, and we had an animated conversation until
I felt I had to leave to get ready for a trip in the morning. We exchanged
info about where we lived and they invited me to stop by.

When people ask me what I want in a Community Center, I say a place to meet
people without a specific date. This is what I got at the Twisted Tree
DeCordova last night. I haven't related to the often-mentioned notion of
intergenerational mixing in the context of a Community Center, but I
enjoyed last night mixing with younger people and their children.

[LincolnTalk] Statehouse Rally next Monday, petition to Governor re Hanscom

2023-09-25 Thread Anne Sobol
Dear Climate Supporters,

Public opposition to the expansion of private jet facilities at Hanscom has
been growing steadily, and our elected officials are paying attention.

Our Coalition opposing the project, Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom
or Anywhere, now includes more than 40 organizations including Mothers Out
Front Lincoln, St. Anne's Lincoln Climate Justice Ministry, and the Lincoln
Democratic Town Committee. More than 10,000 residents of Massachusetts have
signed the petition to the Governor asking her to use her influence with
Massport to cancel the project.

On *Monday, October 2, at 11:00 a.m.,* we will rally in front of the State
House to urge Governor Healey to keep her campaign promise to exercise *bold
climate leadership*. After the outside portion of the rally, where we will
hear remarks from Senator Barrett and others, we will proceed into the
building to a brief event in front of her office where we will present the
petition to the Governor or her representatives.

*Signing the petition is important, but attending the rally is a
particularly meaningful way to demonstrate your opposition to the hangers.*

To see more information at the SPJE website, and to sign up to come to the
rally, please click here.

If you have not already signed our petition, please click here.

Thank you for your support for our campaign,

Re: [LincolnTalk] Disappointed

2023-02-22 Thread Anne Sobol
This is the comment I submitted to MEPA:

The record submitted provides no documentation for the need for what
appears to be a speculative commercial project.

The expansion of private jet traffic at Hanscom is inconsistent with our
local efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels and to protect the
environment.

The expansion of emissions-heavy, private jet traffic will despoil wildlife
and natural habitat in the Great Meadows National Wildlife Preserve and the
Minute Man National Historical Park. It also endangers human beings
enjoying these preserves.

A fuel tank farm will endanger the residential neighborhood around the
proposed project.

Whose interests does MassPort represent? Its own financial interests at
the expense of local Massachusetts citizens? The interests of speculative
commercial businesses at the expense of local Massachusetts citizens, their
families, and their children?

The MassPort website states that MassPort “is dedicated to the vibrant
neighborhoods around us.” If that is true, MassPort should not be
promoting the expansion of the private jet facility at Hanscom.

Expanding facilities for private jet usage is inconsistent with the goals
set forth by MassPort in its Climate Action Plan: Net Zero by 2031.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Need for public electric car charging

2022-09-30 Thread Anne Sobol
I don't agree. I would like to explore the possibility of some public
chargers in Lincoln. (I have my own charger in my garage here.)

When I stayed with my friends in Westford after moving from California with
my Chevy Bolt in late 2020, charging was a problem. It's not so simple as
you make it sound to just plug into any old socket in someone's garage,
I'll spare you the details. Subsequently Westford undertook to install
several public chargers in the center of town, and that is great. When I
visit my sister in Mattapoisett, I no longer have to drive down to New
Bedford and sit on the wharf while my car charges. The town hall in Marion
next door to Mattapoisett has two free chargers, and when I visit my
sister, we drive over to Marion, plug my car in overnight, and pick it up
in the morning. I think I understand that Marion made a deal to change its
town vehicles to electric and somehow scored the chargers for free.

I'd like to look into this for Lincoln. My friend Ellen in Westford can
put me in touch with the people there who handled the issue in Westford. I
understand how difficult this may be, but I envision a few chargers in
Lincoln Station and perhaps at the Library. What do you say?

[LincolnTalk] Technical assistance

2022-07-18 Thread Anne Sobol
Hi,

I hope this email is going just to those who run Lincoln Talk. I have
forgotten, or never understood to begin with, how you communicate directly
with Lincoln Talk management. I would like to tell my neighbor, who bought
in March 2021 and is renovating house next to mine, how to enroll in
Lincoln Talk and learn more about the town.

Please advise. My phone number is (504) 812-2534, if communicating by
phone easiest.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Purchase of solar panels

2022-07-16 Thread Anne Sobol
I bought my solar panels from Boston Solar. The process was smooth, took
two months first contact to panels installed. The panels are producing
lots and lots of power, and substantial credits are all I see on my
Eversource bills, they should come in handy when my heat pump works to heat
my house this winter. You should know Boston Solar provides $500 to
persons referring customers to them. My friend who referred me to BS has
yet to receive his $, but I'm on the case.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Car battery charger suggestions for an electric car (not a Tesla)

2022-05-19 Thread Anne Sobol
When I bought my Chevy Bolt in California in fall 2018, I bought a Juice
Box charger and had it installed on a wooden post (no garage). As I
recall, the Box was free from Sonoma Clean Power, but the electrician
charged me a fortune to run a line underground out to the post. The Box
was great.

When I moved into my house in Lincoln in August 2021, one of the first
things I did was have another Juice Box installed in my garage. The
charger cost $625.81, and the electrician charged me $872 to install
the Box on a 220V socket.

The Enel X (the Company that makes the Juice Box) site says: The U.S.
Federal Tax Credit gives individuals 30% off a JuiceBox home charging
station plus installation costs (up to $1,000). You must purchase and
install the JuiceBox by December 31, 2021 as well as claim the credit on
your federal tax return.

With my replacement batteries from GM (due to the recall), my Bolt when
fully charged is showing a range of 300 miles.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Bemis Lecture

2022-05-04 Thread Anne Sobol
I'm afraid I haven't been following this closely enough. Why is it that
Bemis Hall can't just tell the guy to forget it, the Hall's not available?
If there's a deposit, return it. Is Bemis Hall considered part of the
government of Lincoln such that First Amendment issues preclude telling him
to take a hike? I think I read that he was not forthcoming when the Hall
was engaged. I mean, would Trump have a right to come and speak his lies
at Bemis Hall?

that includes the discontinued Chevy Volt hybrid.

[LincolnTalk] EV's in my experience

2022-03-23 Thread Anne Sobol
I bought a 2019 Chevy Bolt in September 2018 in California where I then
lived. (I had a perfectly good 13-year old Toyota Prius which I sold to a
friend.) I couldn't resist the subsidies. The list price of the car was
about $40,000, but federal, State of California, Sonoma (County) Clean
Power, & Chevrolet ended up kicking in $16,500, so the bottom line was
about $23,500.

It was a drag when shortly thereafter Chevrolet started saying one had to
dial back on the amount the car could be charged while they figured out
what the problem was with the batteries. One of the selling points of Bolt
was that it had the reputation of charging for 238 miles.

I have accepted the numbers that Chevy sold 140,000 Bolts, and four
burned. Once my car got to Mass. in December 2020, the charging capacity
was very much reduced because of the cold (batteries don't like cold).
(The car got to Mass. on a car shipping tractor trailer.) I then had a
long frustrating period while Chevrolet kept saying they would solve the
battery problem, but didn't. I was living in an apartment in West Concord
while I hunted for a house to buy, and was using Colonial Chevrolet in
Acton for service (which means for a Bolt getting the tires rotated). I
finally figured out that Colonial had only done one replacement of
batteries, that they only had one mechanic trained on Bolts, and he was the
same guy that did all the other hightech service work for Colonial. Then I
learned from a friend who also owns a Bolt of similar vintage about a guy
who works at the State level for Chevrolet, a fixer guy who really wants to
help people get their new batteries. A few weeks later this winter, my
batteries were replaced at a Chevrolet dealership in Framingham. Brand new
batteries, reportedly better batteries, and supposedly at a point I will
get warranty documents extending my warranty. As spring is coming on, and
it's not so cold, I'm charging to about "250 miles."

I figured out that in February, last month, the electricity to run my Bolt
cost a little over $40. You could check my math!

I read a news email from Bloomberg to follow the EV market: here's a link
to one from March 8:

If this link doesn't do it, the newsletter is called Bloomberg Hyperdrive.

The Bolt has incredible torque which I resist showing off when I move
forward from lights on Rt. 2. It's fun, four electric motors on each of
the four wheels. It has a "gear" called L which is all I ever use, when
you pull your foot off the accelerator the car slows down, just like a golf
cart, so I never use the brake.

Now that I have my new batteries, I recommend this electric car, but I've
read that Chevrolet may phase out the Bolt when it brings out the Chevy
Equinox.

I guess I should let the LFD know that I have an EV.
