Lincoln. He said we should get used to having bears in our town. The likelihood
is that we will see more.
He said to take down your bird feeders and bring in your trash.
Regarding dogs, he said there is more risk that your dog will be attacked by a
coyote than by a bear. However, he said if you have a dog that wanders or does
not come to you when called,  or who is aggressive,  he suggests keeping it on
a leash.
He also said there is no need to notify them of the current location because
they have no plans to move the bear.
I hope this is helpful.

time of our lives (which we did!). I am gauging interest to see who might be
interested in finding out more. Kaz is going to show some images and video shot
in the park and at his camp plus talk about what to look for if you are going
to visit one of the great game parks. There will be no sales pitch and no

[LincolnTalk] Speed limit and police presence on Trapelo Road
Good evening Lincoln Talk,

I was hoping to engage the community regarding the speed limit and police
presence on Trapelo Road. We were taking the family today to dinner, and like
many days, there was a police presence taking speed limits by Lexington Road
coming downhill where the speed is difficult to control. We are conscious of
this these days, but my overarching feeling is that they are typically pulling
over Lincoln residents where the risk of accident or untoward event is quite
limited.

Appreciate any input from the community.

Happy holidays to all.

Also if the pond is not deep enough (ours is 4.5’ deep) then heron will be able

With a shallow pond it also makes it much easier for raptors to hunt them.

A couple of koi notes (from experience):
   - They can slowly grow quite large (up to 3')

freezing in the winter; either a pond heater has to be added or the koi brought
indoors
   - koi are relatively 'dirty' fish for their size; some kind of filtration is
often needed
One interesting fact is that koi kept in ideal conditions can outlive their

Pies can be ordered from October 15-November 10 through our website

Pies can also be purchased as a gift for LSRHS faculty and staff and/or for

She finds it “remarkable” that the CCBC didn’t mention the ACS survey.
Remarkable, indeed, because the FAQ does mention the ACS survey, both when it
refers to the population estimates that the Census Bureau provides every year,
and when it cites the current estimate (2022) that Lincoln’s population is
6,855.
Further, Karla Gravis suggests that the CCBC has used the ACS numbers for other
towns for its benchmarking exercise.  This is incorrect.  The CCBC has used the
Town Census numbers for every town, to ensure full comparability.
Karla Gravis also suggests that people continue to be listed on the Town Census
for Lincoln even if they register in other towns or if they die.  This is not
accurate.  People will be removed from the Town Census for either of those
reasons (or when the RMV informs the town of a new address on a driver’s
license).  It takes longer to remove people from the Town Census if they move
without updating their voter registration or their driver’s license, so we
can’t assume that the Town Census is absolutely accurate, but there are still
reasons to believe that it is more accurate than the estimate provided by the
U.S. Census Bureau.

I know some people will roll their eyes at me, but I think we need to set the
record straight when talking about population numbers.
In the email below, it is said: "There are two primary sources for information
about who lives in Lincoln: the decennial U.S. census, and the annual Town
census." This is an inaccurate statement. There is a third source: the ACS
survey conducted by the US Census Bureau. There is a good reason to to use the
ACS: the decennial survey does NOT provide a count of residents over 60.
It is remarkable the CCBC fails to mention this third source given that it is
precisely this source that the CCBC uses for all TEN towns in their
benchmarking exercise except for Lincoln. The CCBC also used the ACS as their
source for Lincoln in the November 2022 Special Town Meeting presentation.
The email below also states: "[...] for comparisons with other towns, the CCBC
has opted to use the Town numbers rather than the federal numbers." A
reasonable person would assume that if the goal is to compare with other towns,
we should use the same source for all towns, not a different one just for
Lincoln. The practice in Lincoln for town counts has been to keep people on the
roll even if they do not return the form (they could have moved, passed away or
registered in other towns where they also have a home). There is a good reason
for keeping them on the roll from a voter perspective, as we want to make sure
we enable everyone to vote, but it does render the town count data unreliable
for statistical and comparison purposes. This practice will tend to inflate the
data. Towns do not report such counts publicly, therefore comparisons on this
basis cannot be established.
We need to be using the same source for each and every town in a comparison
exercise, and not switch to a different source just for Lincoln. This is
particularly true when the difference between town counts and the US Census is
40%. I understand the CCBC may not like the comparison to Harvard, which has
approximately the same senior population as we do, yet they spent less than $3M
on their Senior Center, or to Wayland, which has almost three times our total
and senior population, yet they are spending $12M on their community center.

COMMUNITY CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE:
FAQ

The vision: what is a Community Center, and why would Lincoln want to build one?
A Community Center not only reflects the community at whose heart it sits, it
strengthens that community. A Community Center is a year-round,
intergenerational gathering place and activity center. A Community Center is a
locus for a wide variety of activities – health and fitness, social services,
learning, eating, socializing, creating, playing, participating. A Community
Center enriches the community by fostering organizational collaboration and by
housing an array of programs, for all ages.

At its heart, the Community Center is a home for the Lincoln Council on Aging &
Human Services and the Parks & Recreation Department, both of which do much
more than most people realize, and both of which run constrained programs in
their current homes. The Community Center also provides a

If we look at Option 1 (100% design),construction of the community center will
overlap with the location of Pod C(graph below - the blue square is my
approximation of where Pod C sits based onCCBC docs). This means that LEAP
would probably be part of an active construction site!In the 75% and 50%
designs, LEAP would be right next to the constructionsite.

I am concerned about having childrenso close to an active construction site,
with all the potential for safetyhazards as well as exposure to toxic
construction materials. Not sure how LEAPaccess to the septic system will be
impacted during construction. I have toassume that construction will last at
least 12 months if not more.

In the most recent CCBC meeting, thearchitects estimated that the LEAP portion
of the project adds ~$3.4M to thecost. We owe it to our community to at least
consider the possibility of savingmoney for the town while ensuring the best
for our children.

Our net-zero brand-new school offers adequate space and access to new
playgrounds, and since the LEAP program runs after regular school hours,
there's no scheduling conflict. We would be making the transition for kids
attending the program much easier. The math team already meets in a hub once a

Artinian Jewelry in Concord proper:

The woman who owns/runs the shop has pierced ears for decades and used to be a
registered nurse.
She pierced my daughters ears when she was 9 and she pierced my ears as well.
I don’t know if she can do the needle method but I imagine that might be more
painful?
I prefer the gun and find it almost painless.

Facebook Marketplace

You will often find that people in need as well as organizations or students in

| Help us Meet the Surging Demand for Help |

|
| | |
| | |

We are experiencing a surge in referrals for families who are in great need of
furniture and household items. In July alone we provided essential furniture
and household items for 249 homes, serving 367 adults and 299 children. They
are families who lack the resources to buy items they need, even in second-hand
markets.
Please help us keep up with the high current demand for beds, couches, and
kitchen/dining tables. The effort you make to donate your items will make an
enormous difference in the quality of life for those who receive them.
In an effort to make donating easier:
EXTENDED DROP-OFF HOURS: We are extending our Saturday drop-off hours until 2pm
through September (closed Labor Day weekend).
COUCHES-ONLY DRIVE: We are holding a one-day Couches Only Drive in Acton and
Concord. Our goal is to pick up 11 couches on September 11. We will only have
room for couches that day, but you may drop off other items during our drop-off
hours or connect with ReSupply to schedule a pick up.
Not in Acton or Concord? Consider scheduling a pick up through our partner
ReSupply.
We know that getting bigger items to us can pose a challenge. At this time, our
pickups are very limited. We only have the capacity to pick up a fraction of
the furniture required to meet the current need. We are calling on the
collective creativity of the community to help us find ways of getting the
furniture our clients need out of storage and into our showroom.

   - Consider renting a truck on your own or with your friends or neighbors to
bring in furniture.

   - Host a furniture drive with your social, faith, or community group; email
i...@householdgoods.org for more

Re: [LincolnTalk] Kids swimming lessons

2023-05-15 Thread Joanna Owen Schmergel via Lincoln
For little kids, Little Flippers in Natick does an excellent job year round.
The water is very warm too so no meltdowns ;)
For older kids year round we have been very happy with the Waltham YMCA:)
We did not have good luck having an instructor come to the pool at our house
when the kids were very little. Because we were also home and because it lacked
the positive peer pressure of other kids it was a disaster, lol

[LincolnTalk] SK: seeking a set or collection of 8 map or fabric weights

2023-02-16 Thread Joanna Owen Schmergel via Lincoln
Hi there,
The Boston Bridges Initiative, a 501(c)3 supporting all METCO groups, is
seeking a donation of a set, or collection of 8 map or fabric weights.
We need them for Downsize for Diversity ART in order to lay out and photograph
a large collection of original 1968 posters we just received without damaging
them.
If you have any to donate please call, email or text me at (617) 645-9059
Thanks:)

I value the discussion and debate in the LT community, and appreciate the
sentiments expressed around that. At the same time, I think virtual forums can
allow us to be more hurtful and lacking in empathy than we would be in other
in-person discussions, and I think we have to guard against that. Statements
that are personally hurtful should not be allowed here.

In that vein, I think calling out any Boston resident parent of our school
community as "not a Lincoln parent" is hurtful, especially in the context of
this person making such a generous commitment to our shared school community.
We know our Boston resident students and families experience less belonging in
our school and town communities, and this impacts their daily experiences and
outcomes. These sorts of statements move us in the wrong direction.

Yes, every parent brings their own perspective. And, I think we should all
recognize that for many, many years in our decision-making, the Boston resident
community has been under-represented. And, that this is a community that it is
particularly important to design for, in the context of the data we have on
belonging in our district.

I know many of us are grappling with how to reckon with the ongoing structural
racism and other forms of institutionalized privilege around us. Beginning to
over-represent those that have been historically underrepresented seems like a
great way to start.

I'm a bit shocked why we didn't have at least a couple of Lincoln resident

Once the Superintendent gave notice that she is retiring, the scope of her work
responsibilities automatically changed.   The document you linked to never
considered the unusual conditions of Superintendent responsibilities during the
period after giving notice until a new Superintendent comes on board.  I feel
strongly that It is not fair to ask a new Superintendent to make important
decisions before she is a full time employee of the town.

Dear School Committee Members and Lincoln Talk,

If you agree with my email below, please forward this email to the
schoolc...@lincnet.org with your agreement that we should hold off on hiring a
new Middle School principal.

I believe we are about to make a big mistake. In our hurry to find a new
Principal for the Middle School, the School Committee has forgotten about the
importance of our new Superintendent getting the opportunity to build his/her
own team. As many of you know, our Middle School principal Sharon Hobbs is
retiring at the end of this school year. Our current plan is to have our
retiring Superintendent run point on the search, selecting candidates and
conducting interviews before we have even had a chance to select our new
Superintendent. The retiring Superintendent will be assisted by a Committee
that shockingly does not include a single Lincoln parent or resident-at-large.
Our incoming Superintendent will only have a token opportunity to bless the
candidate selected by the current Administration team.

Given the immense importance of getting this candidate right and ensuring that
our new Superintendent is set for success, I strongly encourage the School
Committee to put this process on hold. Our new Superintendent should have an
opportunity to become acquainted with our school to properly determine the
specific skills required for the job before beginning this process. At a future
time, our new Superintendent should have the opportunity to lead this process
and have a say on the Search Committee members and the candidates selected.
Said Committee should make a real effort to get a strong contingent of Lincoln
parents and residents representing a broad spectrum of views. Our new
Superintendent might decide that the school would be better served by placing
an interim Principal and in my opinion that would be fine. We will be better
off waiting for the right person who can work together effectively with our new
Superintendent than rushing to make a subpar decision that impairs our school.

Best,

Peter Buchthal

Thank you so much for putting this together Paul. I appreciate how clearly
you've laid it all out.

And thank you to Andy for crunching the numbers independently and arriving at a
remarkably accurate number. I appreciate how much effort it takes to do that
analysis, time which I personally was not willing to spend.
I just want to say that I don't really care exactly how we stack up against
neighboring towns. There are myriad ways Lincoln is different from other towns
(our much vaunted rural character, for example), and if we're not looking at
all the ways Lincoln is different or similar to other towns, then I don't think
it's a great use of our time to try to nitpick the school budget comparison.

I am extremely happy with the schools. My children are receiving an excellent
education. They are more advanced, academically, than I was at the same age,
and the teachers and staff have been responsive and supportive of any perceived
hiccups in the road. From another angle, I was concerned that we would not be
able to fill our open superintendent position, given how many educators are
leaving the profession across the country. Instead we have four excellent
candidates. I take that as an indication that Lincoln is providing a high
quality educational environment, not just for the children (which I observe
directly), but also for the staff, which is equally important.

Thanks again to all who were willing to take the time to provide accurate,
current data for all of us.

Best,Virginia

As I did In November 2022 re LincolnPopulation & Comparative Taxes, I’d like to
clarify some informationon Lincoln Talk, specifically as it relates to the
Lincoln Public School expenditures. This is a complicatedarea so apologies for
the length / detail. Quick summary up-front for thoseless interested in the
full detail. Note these are my individual views and donot necessarily reflect
those of the Town Finance Committee.

Summary

-   Lincoln CampusK-8 has a FY23 Operating Budget per Enrolled Student of
~$25.4K.

-   This is 6%higher than comparable districts (Carlisle, Dover, Sherborn)
and 11% higher ifyou include Concord and Sudbury

-   Thelargest drivers of this 11% higher expense vs. peer towns appears to
be school sizeand teacher tenure

-   Enrolledstudents, not resident students, is the appropriate denominator
/ metric as thatis how we run our schools

-   Non-allocatedcosts (e.g., pensions & insurance) have generally grown
with inflation inthe last 10 years

Lincoln Public School Expenditures

The SchoolCommittee and Administration regularly report on School Expenditures
as part ofthe annual budget process, including at Annual Town Meeting. For
FY23, theOperating Budget for Lincoln Campus was $14.2M, 89% of which is
covered byLincoln Town Appropriations, and this funds the education of ~558
enrolledstudents, which equates to ~$25.4K per student. Hanscom Campus had an
OperatingBudget of $18.0M, 95% of which is covered by the Department of
DefenseContract, and this funds the education of an estimated 541 students,
whichequates to $33.3K per student. Combining Lincoln and Hanscom Campus,
Lincolnhas a FY23 Operating Budget of $32.2M and 1,099 enrolled students for
~$29.3kper student.

ComparativeExpenditures

While municipal financial comparisons can be imprecise, there is some comparison
data out there. Carlisle School Committee provides a district comparison on an
annual basis that provides some useful comparisons of liketowns. For FY20 (the
most recent comparison they provide), the report shows theaverage per pupil
cost for K-6/8 across Carlisle, Concord, Dover, Sherborn, andSudbury is $18.7K.

Lincoln is reported to be $23.9K forFY20 (but this includes both Lincoln Campus
and Hanscom or 1K+ students). If weadjust for the relative expenditures of

[LincolnTalk] Donate original art and sculpture to the Boston Bridges Initiative and Downsize for Diversity!!

2022-12-31 Thread Joanna Owen Schmergel via Lincoln

Hi Folks!

Happy New Year!

The Downsize for Diversity ART (Anti-Racist Together) program was originally
started by the Lincoln METCO Coordinating Committee, MCC, a 501(c)(3) here in
Lincoln.

Since 2017, this program has raised $170,000 in net sales for the MCC!

This success was overwhelmingly due to the passion, generosity, and commitment
to the MCC, and to the METCO program,  of the people in Lincoln as well as 35
other towns in Greater Boston.

Starting this month, Downsize for Diversity ART is going to be fundraising
(Continuing to collect your art donations!) through the Boston Bridges
Initiative, a 501(c) (3), begun here in MA, to facilitate cultural exchange and
promote meaningful social interaction between city and suburban families. The
Boston Bridges Initiative helps support programs such as Friends of METCO
groups, METCO departments, and other like organizations in Massachusetts, to
include the MCC here in Lincoln!

BBI’s Mission:

Facilitate cultural exchange and promote meaningful social interaction between
city and suburban families.

BBI’s Vision:

Empower children of today to build a better tomorrow

Our Intention:

Build culturally diverse lasting friendships

The Focus:

Support programs for k-12 families

Our Starting Point:

METCO district partners:

- Lincoln

- Bedford

- Wayland

- Wellesley

- Weston

- Newton

- Manchester by the Sea

More communities coming soon!!

How does Downsize for Diversity ART (Anti-Racist Together) work?

Generous artists and donors across Massachusetts and New England donate
original works of art and sculpture to the Boston Bridges Initiative, a
501(c)(3) based in Massachusetts.

So Easy!

We come to you in our big truck and pick up all of your original artwork
donations and give you an itemized, signed 501(c)3 tax receipt on the spot!

The Boston Bridges Initiative then sells these artworks locally and all
proceeds will be contributed to the Boston Bridges Initiative to support their
work supporting METCO and other like organizations throughout the year.

Call, text, or email Joanna Schmergel anytime to schedule a pick up at
