[LincolnTalk] Small Party Caterer?

2024-06-06 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear Neighbors,

I need to find a caterer for a small party - 15 to 20 people. Lots of
caterers have a 30 person minimum for full service. Looking for prep,
cooking, serving, clean-up.

Thanks,

[LincolnTalk] Ode to the Swap Shed

2023-11-25 Thread John and Margit Griffith
First Opportunity: I understand the proper name for the place where we
exchange all manner of useful items is the "Swap Shed" - which, I have
heard, had been the "Swap Table" until the first move to the new (now
demolished) shed. However, before I learned its name, I referred to it as
the "Share Shack" - and this is how my family and friends know where I get
all my good stuff.

I once referred to it as the Lincoln Carriage House of Crap... when I was
trying to be fancy. What other names could we conjure for this wonderful
place of wonders?

Second Opportunity: A Swap Shed poetry slam. Haiku to sonnet, limerick to
lyric - give it all you've got. I'll choose a winner - who will receive a
fabulous prize, gleaned from... you guessed it... the Share Shack!

I'll go first...

Place of hidden gems
  You hold the townsfolks' treasures
Is today my day?

Your Turn!

[LincolnTalk] Update: Bikes and Skis

2023-11-25 Thread John and Margit Griffith
The two bikes and the smaller snowboard are taken. The larger snowboard
(older youth/small adult) is still against the fence.

Very glad to see a few pairs of skis depart from the transfer station! I
have a mind to get creative... will post a new email "Ode to the Swap Shed"
to inspire other Lincoln creatives and delight (or not) our neighbors...
see next email for details.

[LincolnTalk] Free: Bikes and Skis

2023-11-25 Thread John and Margit Griffith
We had a satisfying barn clean-out. On the way to the transfer station
today... old skis - some are 8-10 years old (better than your vintage pair?
still have some life?), some are from the 90's (making one of those ski
Adirondack chairs?). They will be leaning against the metal bin in about
30 minutes.

We have two snowboards in great condition (one is for youth, one
older-youth) and two adult bikes... and older mountain-style bike and a
hybrid (road/mountain) bike - both need just a little work to be rideable.
We're holding them here for a week... if they're not gone from the driveway
by next dump day, we'll bring them to the metal bin and hope someone
scoops them from there.

Bikes and boards at 9 Oak Knoll Road - leaning against the fence.

[LincolnTalk] Community Sing at LS in May!

2023-04-07 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dearest L-S Community Members and Singers,

Our annual L-S Community Sing is coming up in May. We are working to
"revive" the tradition, and are happy to welcome any community members,
parents, alumni, or friends who sing and wish to join us for the Rutter
Gloria with Choir, soloists, brass octet and percussion!

This L-S choral tradition dates back to about 1993, spanning many singers
and choral directors. Chamber Singers will be singing "The Road Home" and
will invite any Chamber Singers alumni to come up and sing with us (a
tradition dating back to 2012). Masks will be optional for singers.

Mon. May 15 - Dress rehearsal - 7:00-8:30 pm in the L-S auditorium (might
not be quite that long)
Thurs. May 18 - Community Sing Concert - call for singers at 6:30 pm,
concert starts at 7:30 pm.

The piece - John Rutter's "Gloria". It is about 17 minutes long and we
have scores and practice files available for the music and for the text (we
did the piece about 7-8 years ago). If you like, you can stop by block 7
to sing with the Choir--contact me for details.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M6eSr221Vc=PLXpQCRhZw2lY6k8_3luTDUy6x7CWp9-40

Please do forward this message and info to others who might be interested,
including area church choirs and temple choirs. Anyone who wants to come
is welcome:
Anyone who is interested, please send me an email to let me know so I can
make sure we have enough scores available!

Dear LincolnTalk,

The moderators have made it abundantly clear over several years of Town
Meetings and voting cycles... TAKE CONVERSATIONS OFFLINE! If you are in a
debate with someone and are going back and forth... time to take it offline.

You may not believe it, but the general consumership of LincolnTalk

BE ON NOTICE: posts to LincolnTalk addressed to individuals will be

[LincolnTalk] Reminder/Warning

2023-02-03 Thread John and Margit Griffith
The moderators regularly get emails from people saying, "I just posted
something to the whole list by mistake, can you remove it?"

We can't.

Right now, I am typing an email. This is an email. Just like any other
email, once you send it, it's gone. You can't pull it back.

It might help to think of LincolnTalk as an email address book. We host
the address book and you send the emails using the address book. Once you
hit "send", it goes directly into people's email inboxes.

Please be careful. Please be intentional.

Some email providers allow you to recall an email... if it hasn't been
opened. I'm not sure if this will work with LincolnTalk, but you can try it.

If you want a little extra security, many email hosting services give you
an option to set up a wait-time between the time you hit the "send" button
and when the email actually sends. This gives you some seconds or a minute
to make a correction.

Yours Supportively,
Margit

[LincolnTalk] Food Pantry - kindly reminder

2022-09-23 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear LincolnTalk,

The Lincoln Food Pantry is in great need of non-perishable food items.
There are donation bins right at Donelans and bins behind the rectory of St
Joseph's Church on Lincoln Road (pull into the driveway shared with Ryan
Estates, pull in behind the house on the right, bins are on the back porch).

Food insecurity continues to be an issue for many individuals and families.

[LincolnTalk] Quilting Fabric Available

Re: [LincolnTalk] Assisted living places in Cambridge

2022-07-28 Thread John and Margit Griffith
I now work at The Cambridge Homes (next to Mt. Auburn Hospital). The
residents are very happy with their choice of home and it's a terrific
place to work. There are staff who have been there over 20 years. I'm
only three months in and am very happy.

Please call me at work 617-876-0369 x112 if you'd like to chat. I'm not
an expert yet, but happy to say what I can and find the answers to anything
I don't know... yet.

2022-06-25 Thread John and Margit Griffith
$40 - six Sundays (virtual via Zoom) - wonderfully quirky offerings...
there's truly something for everyone.

Are you interested in taking classes like Introduction to Criminology, Making
Books and Book-ish Structures, Optimization in Graph Theory and so much
more? Do you want to make new friends through six weekends of exciting
classes taught by MIT students and community members? Longing for knowledge
like a Hungry Squirrel Scrutinizing Pinecones?

Registration for Summer HSSP 2022 closes this Sunday June 26 at 11:59 PM EDT.
This is your last chance to register for the Summer HSSP class lottery
! New classes have also been added
to the class catalog since registration opened!

Summer HSSP 2022 is a virtual six-weekend program for middle and high
schoolers, open to rising 7th graders through recently graduated 12th
graders. It will run on Saturdays from 1 to 4 PM EDT, beginning on July 9
and ending on August 13.

Classes will be assigned by lottery, and all class preferences submitted by
the deadline (June 26th) will be treated equally. Soon after that, you’ll
be able to view your lottery results and add or drop classes. During this
phase, students who missed out on the lottery can also enroll!

Free plushies?

Want to get cute, squirrel-themed Summer HSSP plushies? Get two of your
friends to enroll in Summer HSSP! Ask your friends to fill out the referral
form linked in the student registration page when they register – they just
need to write your name and ESP username in the form.

Cost

The total cost of attending Summer HSSP is $40, which includes all six
Saturdays of classes, regardless of how many classes you are taking.
Financial limitations should not prevent anyone from participating, so we
also offer generous need-based financial aid.

Other logistics

Due to MIT’s COVID-19 policies, Summer HSSP will happen virtually this year
through Zoom. We will communicate with HSSP students primarily through
email in the weeks leading up to Summer HSSP, so make sure you regularly
check the email address linked to your student account. Since Summer HSSP
won’t take place on MIT’s campus, you can attend from anywhere in the world!

We hope to see you this summer! Go to esp.mit.edu/learnsquirrel2022 or
email us at summer-h...@mit.edu if you have any questions about the program.

Best,

Kate and Vivian

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln League of Women Voters?

2022-06-25 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear Neighbors,

There used to be an active LWV in Lincoln, but it dissolved and was
incorporated into neighboring town/s' chapter/s. I think... if I'm
remembering correctly?

Perhaps it's time for women to become more actively focused and engaged in
politics? I'm not sure if reviving a Lincoln chapter of LWV is the proper
action, but I just can't sit by and do nothing; LWV is a place to begin.
You can read more here: https://www.lwv.org

Is anyone interested in exploring this with me?

[LincolnTalk] From the Moderators - ENOUGH!

2022-05-06 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear LincolnTalk Neighbors,

Let us remember that we are neighbors. Let us remember to be neighborly.

And let me tell you the moderator's motivation for LincolnTalk - which will
help you understand our goals and perspectives and which may inform your
actions moving forward.

Imagine a public bulletin board. Maybe you see this outside Town Office,
maybe you see this down outside Donelan's. You get the idea... it's a
community bulletin board where people can post things for sale, lost items,
services offered, etc.

Now picture a public square where people can bring boxes (ie soapboxes) to
stand on. Those within hearing will hear, those who are interested will
stop, those with opposing views can offer responses.

*LINCOLNTALK IS INTENDED AS A COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD. That was and is
our motivation. We tolerate soapbox moments as a community service. This
continues to be violated...*

Back and forth. Back and forth. This side, that side. You haven't heard my
voice yet. I need to have the last word. ENOUGH! We are exhausted having
to remind people of this every single time a new topic or discussion comes
up.

Richard Pannetta has kindly offered a platform for continued and in depth
political discourse. HIs motivation is soapbox... do not post your lost cat
there (unless your cat votes differently than you and you suspect that's
why it ran away). Richard, will you please post that link again?

Specifically to this moment... STOP POSTING ABOUT BEMIS. Right now.
Enough is enough. If there are continued posts, we will put everyone on
moderation. When the moderators have a free moment during the day, that's
when posts will be cleared - we have extremely busy lives and will take
care of this when we can.

Yours,
Margit (for the Moderators)

[LincolnTalk] Here's a Solution...

2022-04-01 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Put your money and your time where your passions are. Create a
"LincolnPolititalk" list.

All those who love these debates and want them to run free can join that
list for in-depth and un-moderated op-eds and extended debates. We have
heard from several people who seem to have the time to give to this
endeavor, and we encourage you to consider offering this service to the
town.

The LincolnTalk moderators are busy here. The friendly "town-wide picket
fence" is our focus.

Many years ago, the ArlingtonList (which inspired LincolnTalk) had many of
the same concerns... the "neighborly" and more mundane posts were getting
swallowed in political debates and dissertations. To my knowledge, but
it's been a while... there is the ArligntonList, ArlingtonParentList, and a
political list. I believe one or all might have migrated to Facebook... I
know the ArlingtonParent List has.

Make sure you let us know if you create such a space. We will be delighted
to share your invitation to join with folks on LincolnTalk.

Otherwise, I think this topic has been exhausted. I know the Moderators
are.

[LincolnTalk] Moderator Response: Please Reconsider

2022-03-31 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear Neighbors,

In the history of LincolnTalk, there has never been a single person
banned. Never. Ever. Not one single person banned Kicked off.
Disbarred. Excommunicated. Rejected.

When people violate list policies and disregard warnings (or several
warnings), they are put on moderation. This means the Moderators review
their posts and suggest edits when they continue to violate list policies.
If their posts are appropriate, they are sent right through.

Since we don't publicize when a member has been put on moderation, nobody
can say they have been singled out. As it happens, several people were
warned and/or put on moderation at the end of last week and over the
weekend.

People must also understand that this is a volunteer service and the people
moderating have jobs and families. Sometimes emails slip through or
sometimes things remain in the "holding pen" when we are sleeping, eating,
spending time with our families or attending to work. We are up front
about all of this in the welcome and policies on the website you all went
to in order to become a member.

It is a policy that, if you have something you'd like to say to the
moderators, you can send an email directly to us. Posting to the list
means you are not serious, but are looking for a bully pulpit. You're
looking for an audience, not a solution and a reminder of list policies is
all you're going to get.

So here's your reminder... Go have a review of the policies.

[LincolnTalk] Policy Reminders

2022-03-28 Thread John and Margit Griffith
Dear Neighbors,

Over the years, the overwhelming majority of LincolnTalk members have
expressed frustration over prolonged email exchanges between two (or a few)
people. Other posts get lost in the back-and-forth debating. We know this
doesn't make everyone happy, but it makes the vast majority of
LincolnTalkers so; ergo...

...as stated on the website, the LincolnTalk policies on civility include
taking continued conversations offline - they are clear and are a direct
reflection of feedback the moderators have received.
https://www.lincolntalk.org/rules-and-policies

We support an exchange when someone posts an opinion, someone posts a
rebuttal, and the original poster clarifies... if there's more to be said,
it's time to take it offline. If you wish, the debating parties may agree
to invite others to their continued email exchange... "Dear LincolnTalk
Members, we intend to continue our discussion off-line per LT policies. If
you wish to continue to be included in our debate, please let one of us
know and we'll make sure you're included."

To be clear, for 99.9% of posts the moderators have ever held, the issue
has been about conduct more so than content. All sides of an issue are
welcome... in moderation (pun intended).

[LincolnTalk] Covid Perspective from Arlington Doctor

2022-01-19 Thread John and Margit Griffith
I've followed Robin on the Arlington Families Facebook group... she tells
it pretty straight.

Here's her latest:

Hi, I'm back as
Robin-Schoenthaler-the-Boston-cancer-doctor-who-writes-about-Covid. (nd
it’s okay with me if you want to share, either directly from my public FB
page or cut and paste from here.)

11,000 cases/day in the US in June

650,000 cases last Saturday

800,000 today (plus still a gabillion unreported at-home tests)

Today we are going to talk about KIDS.

I know many parents out there with little kids are living in Limbo Land and
feel neglected and constantly afraid and as if there’s no right answer, so
let’s talk about the kids under 12 and Covid.

Just a note: this isn’t about kids and school or kids and lunch or kids and
sports — this is just about the science we know and the science we are
working on.

Let us first keep in mind that a terribly small number of 5-11-year-olds in
the US have been vaccinated — under 20%. This is utterly heartbreaking
since it’s the unvaccinated 5-11 year-olds who mostly end up in the
hospital.

The very most important thing you can do to protect your 5-11 year olds is
to have them vaccinated — and all the adults around them as well.

Okay, let’s talk about what to expect if your kids get Covid.

First off, I find among all the horrifying headlines about rising rates in
children, it is crucial to remember: kids almost never die of Covid. It is
vanishingly rare. It is way lower than what we see with adults. It is lower
than the death rates with childhood cancer or accidents.

If numbers help you, then consider that out of about 9 million kids getting
Covid so far “only” about a thousand kids have died.

Now it is totally true that there is no “only” here and that every child
death is an unspeakable forever tragedy and every one is seared into our
hearts and brains for all of eternity. I know this. We know this.

But the reality is the chances of YOUR CHILD dying of Covid is in the teeny
tiny decimal points. I hope this helps you put that particular fear to the
side.

The chance of your child getting a serious illness with Covid is not zero,
but it is low. It is also probably lower with Omicron, although full data
is still coming in. It is WAY lower when your child is vaccinated.

Very few kids get super sick with Covid; for the majority it is a short
period of fussiness, fatigue and feeling lousy, or less. Only about 1% of
kids end up in the hospital. And, happily, this seems to be lower with
Omicron.

The impact of vaccines:

Brief science (feel free to skip ;-): It seems like what is happening with
Omicron for vaccinated kids (and adults) is that it escapes the vaccines
and lands in the nose and throat. How does it escape the vaccines? It
escapes either because we don’t have enough or good enough B-cell-produced
antibodies from our vaccines or the viruses outnumber or slip past the
antibodies we do have.

So the viruses go lodge in our nose/throat and we get some local symptoms
(sore throat, runny nose, sinus pain, sneezing, post-nasal drip) from
that. Or maybe we get a headache or fatigue or body aches, or a dry or
croupy cough, or occasionally there’s GI symptoms.

But then, fortunately, what we think happens next is that most of the time
our T cell immune system kicks in and essentially stops very many viruses
from going to our lungs. This is why vaccinated people— and our kids —
rarely get pneumonia or serious blood clots or awful breathing issues.

If your child is too young to be vaccinated:

People who are unvaccinated don’t have any B-cell-produced Covid antibodies
or a T-cell response. Also, if you are immunocompromised maybe you can’t
make any antibodies.

In both these cases, the viruses can reproduce like crazy in the
nose/throat and move to the lungs. This is part of how adults get so sick.

Fortunately disease moving to the lungs appears to be pretty uncommon with
little unvaccinated kids — they seem to get milder disease overall. When
Omicron, it tends to show up as croup or something called bronchiolitis
which can usually be treated at home or sometimes the ER — but mostly
doesn’t require hospitalization.

So most little unvaccinated kids with Omicron have mild illness and are
tended to at home. On occasion, like 1% of the time, they can end up in
the hospital which can be ugly and scary and super disruptive for everybody
involved. This usually happens when the virus goes to the lungs. Sometimes
it happens when a child has a lot of diarrhea or is too sick to eat or
drink and they get dehydrated.

How do you know when you need to take your little one to the doctor or ER?
To paraphrase one of my favorite pediatricians: “Covid advice is basically
identical to flu advice: Your child might want to take more naps, might
not want to eat or drink as much as usual. But when they’re awake, they
should feel well enough to play a quiet game, read a book, watch a show,
etc. Call me if the child:

—is not reasonably
