Growing up in the U.S. in the 1960's made one either blissfully ignorant of this, or very much upon the things. I even launched my own rockets, but the most dangerous payload was a walkie-talkie stripped of it's case and having the transmit button jammed so we could locate it. It went all of about 10 feet. :-) Nice. Bdale Garbi (former Debian leader and HP OpenSource CTO or somesuch) talked about his rocket-related and hobist satellite exploits on both occasions that I met him. But I was referring to the way the rocket launchers organize, not the rockets. 1. Those rockets are far too inaccurate to aim - two rockets fired from the same spot, direction, angle etc. (even ignoring atmospheric differences) will land at pretty wide circle of target. How wide? They are not cruise missles and can't be aimed to hit an office second from the left on the second floor of a 10 story building, but if you fire enough of them, you can aim them within a block or two. Do you know this for sure or are you just estimating? Don't forget that while the people in Gaza have things that are home made, they are far better than the fireworks rocket that was used in the news article. Hizbollah has Iranian made rockets which are a lot more consistent. 2. This still doesn't say how the Israeli users missing on a convenient service prevents the terrorists on the other side of the fence from finding out the location by simply opening up a map, as they already say that they do in the news item that you brought. Because combining things makes them simpler. You may be able to combine them sitting at your desk, but if you are in a field knowng that the IDF is already on their way, coordinating a strike with cell phones, with a spotter and someone at the control center on a computer, is a lot easier if they have one database to search instead of 2 or 3. I'm still not with you about why not having street names on Google Maps (while being able to get them on mapa.co.il, ynet maps, GPS software etc) will prevent or even hinder their attacks, while at the same time people who live in Israel miss out on the greatest mapping tool I've seen. See above. Try it some time. Call a friend on your cell phone and as your are driving or riding on a bus, call out street names as you pass them. See how long it takes to use one database, two, three or four. Then go to mapa.co.il or ynet maps(?) or even MS's maps and get that in one place, so what's the excuse now? --Amos = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Link back open deleted files - a working solution
Can it link back a loopmounted filesystem? On 9/13/07, Amos Shapira [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi (and happy new year). I've had this idea ever since someone asked about this situation on this forum a few months ago: Considering that you have a long running process writing stuff into a large file, and you accidentally delete that file. You can still access the file's content through /proc/pid/fd/fd and that's basically the suggestion he was given (cp /proc... new file), but the limitations of this solution are: 1. It will loose any changes made to the deleted file after the copy. 2. It creates another copy of the data (could be a problem if there isn't enough space on any partition). My solution (available in http://sourceforge.net/projects/fdlink) is to enable the user to link back the deleted file to a new name on the same filesystem as the deleted file. The solution involves as small kernel module and a simple program which calls ioctl(2) on the special device created by that module. The idea is that if someone finds themselves in that situation they should be able to install that module and use it without having to reboot the system (and thus loosing the whole point of it). I have a couple of enhancement that I'm waiting to find time to implement: 1. Update the symlink content under fd/fd to point to the new file name. 2. Implement this as a system call and offer this to be included in 2.6 The module was tested under Debian 2.6.18 and later on x86_64. Any comments/suggestions/contributions are welcome. Re: XMLTV and Israel? (fwd)
Hi, I have a working xmltv setup here. It required some hacking into the downloader code for Israel. First of all, you should use tvtime which has xmltv support. Second, you need the tv_grab_il script attached. Third, you'll need a cron job something like this (here I download twice per week): 20 6 * * 0,3 cp /home/alon/media/TV/listings.xml /home/alon/media/TV/listings.xml.old /usr/local/bin/tv_grab_il | tv_sort /home/alon/media/TV/listings.xml Fourth, you need to configure tvtime to use your XMLTV file and correctly modify the ~/.tvtime/stationlist.xml file with XMLTV ids (I'm attaching my file). The data is obtained from parsing web pages from the Israeli portal walla (from tv.walla.co.il). First run Btv_grab_il --configure to decide which channels to download. There is a long list. You may want to select none when it asks you for which channels and manually edit the configuration file to uncomment the channels you wish to tape. Then run Btv_grab_il with no arguments to output the listing in XML format to the standard output. To view the hebrew, you will need to set your terminal to have a unicode font that supports hebrew. B--configure Prompt for which channels, and write the configuration file. B--config-file FILE Set the name of the configuration file, the default is B~/.xmltv/tv_grab_il.conf. This is the file written by B--configure and read when grabbing. B--output FILE write to FILE rather than standard output. B--days N grab N days. The default is 7 (there does not seem to be more information than this anyway on the server in general). B--offset N start N days in the future. The default is to start from today. B--quiet suppress the progress messages normally written to standard error. =head1 SEE ALSO Lxmltv(5). =head1 AUTHOR Written by Jason Friedman, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This program is based on tv_grab_sn, written by Stefan G:orling, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and maintained by Staffan Malmgren, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Patched by Alon Altman. Good luck! On Mon, 5 Feb 2007, Amichai Rotman wrote: Hi all, I would like to set up Freevo on my Ubuntu 6.10 box and make use of the TV guide feature. Record from TV (saa7134)
Hi, I would like to have a cron job to record a TV program using my saa7134 card. I have mencoder and ffmpeg installed (and may install other software as needed). I do not require high quality, but the recording must be feasible in real time and the A-V must be syncronized. A later compression thread my be run if needed. I'm running on an Intel P4 2.8Ghz with hyperthreading. What I am using up to now is: ffmpeg -f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -acodec mp3 -s 4cif -qscale 10 This gives very low quality, and starts to lose A-V sync after several minutes (due to lag, I guess). Bezeq-supplied ADSL routers exploitable
There is a wide-open hole in the Aztech/TNN ADSL modems supplied by Bezeq if used as a router (and even if not). To check if your modem is exploitable, try visiting: http://10.0.0.138/cgi-bin/script?system+echo+Exploitable If you see the word Exploitable - then your modem is exploitable. Any rouge website can gain full control of your modem, even if you have changed the default administrator password (which is Admin). This script on the modem allows an attacker to issue arbitrary commands to the Linux system on the modem, including flashing the firmware. This can be used to snoop passwords or otherwise abuse the connection. Just look at all the wonderful content you can find on the Internet that is available to the public. Artists create because they _need_ to create. I am an artist and have written some stories: [snipped] I'm pretty sure that's the case for other sorts of media. Actually, some forms of media are only created due to the expectation of financial gain, or at least the possibility of financial compensation. Take movies for example, or most software (even open source), and also music. Without a mechanism that ensures compensation to the funders of the meida (not the artists), there will be very little creation, simply because it costs too much. Copyrights used to be important to make sure creation was continued because at the time, media did not have an electronic representation and facilitated copying. You could not have duplicated a book in the same ease as today's cp or wget commands. Thus, writers who wanted to publish their books needed some sort of legal protection to make sure they can make a living out of selling these books. This is akin to the Hebrew term of Zkhuyuth Yotsrim or Originator rights. Quite the contrary. Copyright was initiated because the printing press made mass-distribution feasible, and thus the cost of a copy was very cheap. The purpose of copyright was to allow creations be mass-duplicated and still have a financial incentive for creating them. This worked well with limited time limited scope copyright, as the original copyright law was. This doesn't work with the copyright laws we have today. 2. I did not do anything wrong. Copying and re-distribution of copyrighted work is fully legitimate according to the First Sale Principle of copyright law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright#The_first-sale_doctrine Even if it is, obtaining the copy is very much illegal. Furthermore, Israel copyright law does not allow even the creation of backup copies, except on certified media, and of course prohibits this kind of distribution. See Well, sharing copyrighted mp3's and videos is legal. (at least legal according to absolute ethics - the law of the land may deviate from it). In any case, if it's not under Hamakor's agenda to protect such activities, I'm looking for an organization which does. Absolute Ethics does not exist. In any case, Hamakor as a legal orginization will not promote breaking the law. We may endorse CHANGING the existing law, but not breaking it at it exists now. On the downside, they don't support Mozilla, not even on Macintosh, except for trivial issues (surely nothing that'll involve the development team). This is their policy until they decide otherwise. This is worse than the policy I've heard more than a year ago, of only supporting Mozilla on Mac. It should be noted that they never fixed their site in response to any of my requests. On the upside, they know to group Mozilla with Netscape and Firefox -- they know they're the same thing, so there is some awareness (and maybe I'm not the only one calling them), even if this awareness is about stuff we don't support. He also could pinpoint other parts of the site which don't work with Mozilla properly. The later one, Asaf, said he'll forward my complaint in the Hatzaot Yeul report. Needed: Project manager for Ha'makor Bug Bounties
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Ha'makor wants to run a bug bounty project, where people pay money that accumulates to fund fixing bugs in free software. A suggested mechanism is detailed, followed a call for volunteers for the role of project manager, and a reference to the dedicated mailing list for this project. - Hi, I think Ha'makor should start a project of bug bounties. The main idea is that people put money to fix the bugs that most annoy them, and when the bug is fixed, all the accumulated money is given to the person or people who fixed it. 1. SUGGESTED BUG BOUNTY MECHANISM The mechanism I suggest for this bounty system, is that a person buys bug tokens for some amount that expire after, say, a year. They can then divide this money between bugs as they see fit, setting an expiration time for each bug. For example, I would pay 50 NIS for fixing bug 12345 until 1/1/2005, but I will pay an additional 50 NIS if it is fixed before 1/9/2004, and also I will pay 100 NIS for fixing but 23456 until 1/4/2005. If the date has passed the person can re-use the token for the same or other bugs, up until the expiration time of the token, when all funds come into the hands of Ha'makor. Instead of (or in conjunction with) expiring tokens, we can also put a, say, 10% levy on all tokens bought that comes into Ha'makor's pockets. The actual tokens could be sold by cheque, using payment slips, given free to members (say, a free 10 NIS 1-year token per year for members), and sold for cash in events such as APIII (you sell a piece of paper with a code for the site). A person who wants to see the bug can see the current total payoff per deadline on the website. For example, bug 12345 can have a bounty of 1200 NIS until 1/9/2004, 750 NIS until 1/1/2005 and 100 NIS until 1/5/2005. When a bug is fixed, a neutral body (Ha'makor board for example) decides if the bug is really fixed, who deserves the payoff, and if and how it should be divided. I suggest we limit payoffs to Israelis, as shipping money overseas may be problematic. This means that if a non-Israeli solves the bug, the money goes to Ha'makor. Any comments/suggestions on the above mechanism are welcome. Please send to the bounty mailing list: bounty AT projects.hamakor.org.il 2. WHAT DO WE NEED To make this dream come true we need someone to devote time and effort to manage and coordinate this project, a programmer or programmers to write the code behind the site, and someone to operate the project. All three could be the same person. Q: What are the tasks of the manager? A: The manager will need to a) Coordinate legal consultaion from our lawyer (Haim Ravia), including drafting the terms and conditions of the system, b) Verify accounting procedure for incoming and outgoing payments from our accountant. c) Find programmers to code the site and/or do it by him/herself. d) Make sure everything works well. Q: Who can be a manager? A: Anybody who thinks he or she can and has time to spend on running this project. Preferrably a member or friend of Ha'makor, and with some technical background. Should be enthusiastic about the idea, but otherwise why apply ;)? Q: How do I become a manager? A: E-mail the board of Ha'makor at board AT hamakor.org.il with your name, expertise, and amount of free time ;)... To make things clear, we are looking for volunteers, and we do not intend to pay any money to the manager(s) and maintainer(s) of this project. 3. Presumably, if someone asks to be removed, he is highly unlikely to ever buy something from you. Spamming him again will only cost you the (insignificant, but still) money, with almost no hope of seeing any back. I'm not sure what this means about the above logic. If you ignorethem, your email address is unconfirmed. If you reply to remove yourself from the list, you are confirming your email address exists and gets to a real person, which makes it much more valuable. How is that more valuable? The precise calculation should be something like this: a - The chances that an unconfirmed email reaches a real person. b - The chances that a random real person will actually buy stuff. c - The chances that someone who asked to be removed will buy stuff. In general, for it to be profitable to not honor removal requests, c must be greater than a*b. I suggest that this is not the case. a is somewhere in the 80%. b is somewhere in the 0.5% (according to my rather dim recollection of spam news. I'm not really sure about this one). Are you truely suggesting that someone who sent an email saying don't ever ever spam me again is more than 0.4% likely to buy something advertised in a future email (meaning - buying a product for every 250 spams received)? P.S. If anyone has better numbers, please let us know. The major reason spammers try to avoid filters and spam people who asked to be removed is twofold: 1. Many ISPs filter spam, so if you avoid an ISP's filters you might stand a chance to be the one of the two spams a specific person would get, which makes the probability of spam being read and goods bought much higher. 2. The ones who collect the addresses are not the ones who spam, and the collectors have an interest to sell as many addresses as possible and call them confirmed or even opt in. Regarding your numbers, the percentage of bad addresses in e-mail lists sold is significantly less than 80%. It's more in the 10% range, if you remove duplicates and incorrect addresses. Studies have shown that high percentages of the e-mail addresses sold are syntactically incorrect (i.e. bad TLD) or include NOSPAM etc. BTW: Why post on linux-il and not on [EMAIL PROTECTED] ? Re: Word of Mouth - spam? (OT)
See http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/wordofmouth.asp Alon Hi all, I'm sorry about the off topic posting. Every so often I get an onsolicited mail announcing that someone posted a report about me, or that someone is looking for information, on a site called Word of Mouth. The site is at http://www.wordofmouthconnection.com. The site baldly claims that this is not spam, and that the email was triggered to inform me that someone is searching for information, or is offering information, about me. Now here's the catch - the searches in that site are performed according to email address. There is someone that claims to know me well, using an address that I have only used once, for a specific purpose, and never with friends! What's more interesting is that every so often someone actually performs a search on that site for that very same (only rarely used) address! Not even spammers bother with this address any more. Google doesn't show any results when searching for it. Now I'm at a loss. Either someone is attempting a very strange sort of slander (why would someone look for me under that email?), or this is such a soficticated sort of spam, that I have not managed to figure out what it is (maybe they are selling commercials at the site for the confused people who want to walk in and find out what the !%([EMAIL PROTECTED]!() the email is about).
