RE: [newbie] fix sis900 networkcard to 10 mbit

2003-07-10 Thread Rob van Dam

I tried to put mii-tool in ifup. That doesn't work. I think because
mii-tool need some time to initialize.

When I do a mii-tool --advertise=10baseT-FD,10baseT-HD mii-tool I
get a no-link output.

When I wait a second and rerun mii-tool everything is o.k.

Rob

Try putting your mii-tool command in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup
round about line 329 just before DHCP is configured.

RE: [newbie] fix sis900 networkcard to 10 mbit

2003-07-08 Thread Rob van Dam
Thanks for all reactions. I finally got my internet working.

I have to run mii-tool --advertise=10baseT-FD,10baseT-HD

After that I have to run dhclient, every time I boot up my computer.

Is there a more elegant way to do this automatically? Or is there some
misconfiguration (because I have to do this every time)

When I run network setting in the Mandrake control center, I have to
rerun mii-tool.

I tried several settings with mii-tool. Mii-tool only works when I click
on make connection in the Mandrake control center, in the time
Mandrake is attempting to connect to internet.

When I run mii-tool other times I get the message no link

I managed one time to establish a connection with mii-tool
--force=10BaseT-FD etho once. During this time I was also able to ping
the ADSL modem (switch). The connection was gone after a short time.

When I run ifconfig I get information about eth0 and eth0:9

The reason I ask, is that I have a MB with a Sis900 ethernet that
wouldn't work correctly with my 10mb hub. It turns out, though, that in
my CMOS, it was set to 100mb. I changed it there and things have worked
like a charm ever since. If it's not a CMOS thing for you, I know we've
had problems at work with other ethernet adapters where duplexing was a
problem. Evidently, we had cards trying to connect to switches in the
wrong duplex mode, I believe it was a problem with the switches,
although I don't remember all of the details. Finally, we've also had
some marginal network cables that worked fine at 10mb or 100mb, but
never auto-detect. Once replaced, things worked fine.

Just some thoughts, although the simplest thing would be to not
auto-detect and manually set it.

When I do a modprobe, the driver is loaded without any warning. The lights
on de switch keep on blinking though. And starting the network
(/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start) takes a very long time.

I had the same problem in Windows and the only solution was to turn auto
detection off.

My only problem is how to do this in Linux.

I tried ethtool, but I got the error message this function not

I also tried to add this to modules.conf (I found this in internet)

 That also didn't work.

I prefer adjusting modules.conf because the change are applied
 automatically on boot.

Does anybody know what option I exactly need to add to modules.conf?

Re: [newbie] fix sis900 networkcard to 10 mbit

2003-07-07 Thread Derek Jennings

It may help to disable network hotplugging. Hotplugging will attempt to
up/down the interface depending on whether it sees keep alive polls.

To disable hotplugging edit /etc/ifplugd/ifplugd.conf and remove the interface
from the INTERFACES= line. Then
service network restart

Also if you do
modinfo sis900
you will see a list of module options. It looks as if the sis900 driver does
not have an option to select 10Mbps or half duplex.

You might learn more on the sis support pages. I know they have a forum.

you might need to contact the ISP by phone and have them enable your
connection to see the ADSL modem, and have the modem give a correct IP
via dhcp.

Is it possible to configure the switch itself? Usually, the Sis900 just works without
needing to set any options. Where did you find the 0x40 option to set? Also, you
don't have something like zeroconf enabled do you? What happens if you hard code an

Another thought - what happens if you do a mii-tool -V -F 100baseTx-HD (or -FD)?
That should turn off auto negotioniation.

Two ways
1/ Install net-tools RPM then use mii-tool .
See man mii-tool.
You will need to insert the command somewhere in your boot up (e.g.
/etc/rc.local )

2/ Set a module option in /etc/modules.conf
For advice see http://www.scyld.com/network/

You should be able to do it with using the utility ethtool - or by
changing the options for the card's module in the /etc/modules.conf
