[OGD] Euchile citrina

2004-06-16 Thread Jorge Melendez
Hi
Encyclia (now Euchile) citrina is a complex of at least three sp. Mexican
taxonomists are now studying this complex. The most common form in
cultivation is E. karwinskii.
Jorge
I'm new to this impassioned list and have a question. Hopefully one of
you
will have an answer.
I have two Encyclia citrinas in bloom, one with a yellow (lemon) lip which
becomes gold and ruffled at the apex. The other, awarded an AM several
years
ago, has a white border on the ruffled lip. Is it usual to have two color
forms? Thanks, Sue Golan

[OGD] Coryanthes maduroana

2004-06-16 Thread K Barrett
In the latest Lankesteriana it looks like Gerlach uses scent to separate
Coryanthes maduroana from C. mastersiana. Admitedly, my high school Spanish
isn't up to the task of understanding the whole article. Can someone with
more Spanish than me tell me if that is that what he's saying? Or is he
merely commenting that C. maduroana's scent is more chemically complex than
other Coryanthes, like C. mastersiana's. Page 70-72, April 2004
Lankersteriana, Vol 4, no. 1.

And also, is scent a legitimate identifier, taxonomically speaking? If one
was to key out a species would one come across that one species has a scent
and the others do not?

[OGD] Cygon ?

2004-06-16 Thread Stitzelweller
I am trying to purchase Cygon. I want to eliminate a Florida Red Scale
problem. Today, I was told Cygon was taken off the market after September 11.
I have also been told that it is unavailable in Florida.

Anyone know the truth? Is it available in the USA? If so, where?

Re [OGD] Lost or held up orchid shippment from Australia

2004-06-16 Thread Kelvin - Sebastian Chuay Siew Yong
 Hi there,

You're not the only one facing problems sending stuff to USA.

Some of the courier services at my place are so afraid of all these
delays that they stopped any parcels containing live plants despite having
proper certification and packed according to the requirements.

Can you believe it - UPS, FEDEX, DHL, TNT accept parcels of plants from
US to enter Singapore and they refuse to accept any live plant shippments
from Singapore...

I would like advice on which courier services accept live plant
shippments to USA from Singapore as well. It is ridiculous to send small
hobbyist quanities by air-freight where shippments are charged at least for
45kgs of plants...

That is one reason why the Orchid Place can't ship to USA at reasonable
prices to hobbyists currently - the shipping cost rung up 2-3 times the cost
of the plants?!

 Cheers

Subject: [OGD] Lost or held up orchid shippment from Australia

  Hello All

Wayne Turville from the Australian Orchid Nursery

We have recently sent two consignments of Australian Orchids in to the
 USA.
One went in to Jamaica ,N.Y and the other to Hawthorne California .
The New York one has arrived at its new owners after 14 days in transit
 But
the Californian one has disappeared after arriving at the USDA in
 Hawthorne.
The owner of the Californian order was rung on the telephone and asked
to
 come
and pay $70.00 extra for a general permit even though it was a hobby
  consignment.
He was told the order could not be given to him after paying this fee
as
 it
remained the property of USA Postal service until it arrived with him.
All orders had immaculate and correct paperwork CITES and Phtytosanitary
  forms.
I have now been told by other USA customers that when importing into the
 USA
to use any port of entry except Hawthorne as its a nightmare to deal
with.
My problem is that being on the other side of the world and with no
email
address to follow through to the USDA my orchids are out there somewhere
 but
not with their new owner.18 days really is a long time.
With time delays its not easy to ring and who wants to call a government
 body
and be put on hold or work through the phone menus from 8000 miles away.
Do I tell my customers not to send me green yellow stickers directed to
Hawthorne or do I just give up as its all too hard as have my
 competitors.
We have spent twelve months and hundreds of hours getting all our
permits
 and
  licences in place
We want to have reliable safe mail order with the USA but its got to be
  smoother than this.
Sorry about my beef but there is no other forum to air my problems
