[Paraview] PV4.1.0 multiple rulers

2018-01-14 Thread Stephen Wornom
I have a slice plane with 2 cylinders separated.

I use rule to measure the length of the re-circulation zone after each
cylinder.
Independently, the ruler shows the distance. When I save the jpg I would like
to see both distances on the figure. At the moment I can only see one not both.
Is there away to see both?
Hope my question is clear,
Stephen

Forgot to mention that the mesh is 3D x,y,z.
rad =sqrt( x**2+y**2) thus varies with the z-coordinate.

The geometry is a cylinder.
Using the calculator I do

I would like to extract the cylinder surface which is rad = 0.1
I click on threshold then information to see rad 0.1

Re: [Paraview] post-process of CFL3D result with surfaces in paraview?

2017-12-02 Thread Stephen Wornom
I have a different code but had the same problem that I resolved by adding an
additional variable which sets value 0 at interior points and a different
values for each surface, for example, -3 for the wing surface points. Then I
use "extract" to visualize the different surfaces.
Hope this helps,

2016-06-29 Thread Stephen Wornom
Thanks Samuel,
The clip function does what I want.
The steps that I used are:
1-select extract surface
2-select conductivity
3-clip (to remove the x-right face)
4-clip (to remove the x-left face)
5-clip (to remove the y-top face)
6-clip (to remove the y-bottom face)
7-slice (to get the 2D circle)

Does not ParaView's Extract Surface filter give what you are looking to obtain?

The result of the Extract Surface filter can also be trimmed visa the Clip

[Paraview] PV 4.10 plot over line using mesh coordinates

2015-07-21 Thread Stephen Wornom
One of the inputs to Plot over line is the number of points (equally
spaced, I assumed).
The solution is interpolated to the points. This poses a problem for
highly stretched meshes like the normal coordinate in a boundary layer.

I would like to plot over line using the actual mesh values and NOT the
interpolated values.

Is this possible in PV?

How do I extract a line using the filters? That would be useful.

Hope my questions are clear,

You may not even need to Slice it. You can
extract a slice simply using Extract Subset filter as well. Just
specify the extent accordingly.

Re: [Paraview] PV 4.1.0: save the data saves only 1/2 of a circle PROBLEM SOLVED - SAVE the csv file using the SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

2015-03-12 Thread Stephen Wornom
Recall that I have two cylinders.

1- extract a surface
2- connectivity
3- threshold
4 slice in the z-coordinate

This produces two circles in the x-y plane.
5- I save the data in a csv file using the default format.
6- To read the cvs file in fortran, I replace the commas by a blank.
7- I read the csv file in a fortran program and plot the values for y 0 (upper
circle) and y0 (lower circle)
8 Result is upper circle points ar missing.

Cause is csv file was written with the default notation which has reals and
integers which I then read as reals in the fortran code.

Re: [Paraview] PV 4.1.0: save the data saves only 1/2 of a circle

2015-03-12 Thread Stephen Wornom
I tried both PV 4.10 and PV 4.31 and get the same result.
- extract surface
- connectivity
- threshold (defines the surface of the cylinder)

information shows ymax= 0.5, ymin=-0.5 which is correct as the radius of the
circle is 0.5.
When I save data, the csv files has all of the y 0 values. For y0 most values
are missing.
For the csv file, ymin= 0.5 but ymax = 0.24.

There are actually two circles, could this pose a problem?

I really need to solve this problem of missing values.
Give me ideas to try, alternative ways to write the data (how do I write only
the values for the 1st cylinder to see if this is the problem?).
Thanks for your help,
Stephen

 Stephen,

The CSV writer should write out all the points. I tried repeating your
instructions with ParaView 4.3.1 using both the Cylinder source and the
disk_out_ref dataset to write out data for a hollow cylinder source to a
csv file and it looks like it works fine. I can only think of the most
 basic things to try:

 * Are you sure your cylinder is centered in the x-y plane? Maybe the
circle is actually sitting below the y axis. Check that with either the
cube axes or the information panel.
 * Is the connectivity/threshold filters really the best way to get a
circle from a cylinder. You might consider instead to use the slice filter
to get the circle. (I don't know why that would fix any I/O issues,
 though.)
 * Is there any chance you can try using the latest version of ParaView. I
don't recall any such problems with the CSV reader in 4.1, but you never
 know.

 Stephen,

I got your data and tried again. Once again I cannot replicate your error.
When I open up the csv file in Excel, I get the number of rows I expect
and the bounds of Y are what I expect. I tried both on a serial process
and using a parallel job (in case there was a problem with writing CSV in
parallel, which there has been in the past but has since been fixed).

When you sent the file to me, you mentioned some further instructions I
didn't understand about modifying the csv file and loading it indirectly
through an inp file. I don't know anything about the inp format (and there
appear to be three readers of different formats that expect that
extension), but perhaps the real problem is in the inp reader? Did you try
looking at the csv file directly in a text editor or spreadsheet program?

I will look at the inp file and see if how I read the csv file (recall that I
replace the commas with blanks) in fortran could be a problem.

I forgot to mention that I am running on my linux workstation the 64-bit binary
versions of PV 4.1.0 and 4.3.1 that I downloaded from paraview web site. Are
you using the binary or an installation from source on your workstation?.

It is strange that for a single cylinder I get the correct number of values
for the upper and lower parts of the cylinder.

The problem occurs when there two cylinders. I will look at the excel files and
if it is correct, maybe I can save it in text format that I can read into
gnuplot.
I have no experience with excel nor reading csv in gnuplot scripts.
Will keep you posted.

[Paraview] PV 4.1: animations of large data

2015-01-07 Thread Stephen Wornom
I create animation using PV with mpi. I can create 200 frames quickly,
no problem.

The problem is visualizing the frames. What I do currently is to create
a gif

convert *.jpg animation.gif
animate animation.gif

The problem is that the gif file is huge, takes a long time to load the
gif file.

1- Are there other visualization options that will be more rapid? I
would like to animate 1000 frames which is not possible using a mono gif
file.
2- The jpg s are 64-bit, is there a convert option to reduce the options
to 32-bit?

Thanks for your precious advice,
Stephen
p.s.
Some links to my animations are given below.

You should create directly a video file from paraview. The 4.1 version
installed on nef is able to create directly ogv files.

Thanks Nicolas. I tried ogv and it is much, much faster than using convert.

Also, is there anybody out there using Paraview in Remote Sensing applications?

[Paraview] PV 4.1.0 plot over line question

2014-06-12 Thread Stephen Wornom
My mesh is unstructured. I want the values along line in the
x-direction. The line crosses two cylinders.

PV proposes 100 values.
When I edit the .csv file that is created when I save data, I find 5
lines with nan. They are near where the cylinders break the line.

Any ideas as to not get the nans as they are in a critical region.
Hope my question is clear,

Re: [Paraview] Make animation from steady state result

2014-06-07 Thread Stephen Wornom

Thanks for passing this on. I am using PV 4.1.0, maybe it was written
for an earlier version of PV. I did step 2, but step 2a ( Change the
Contour By property to IntegrationTime), I do not see this option.

I downloaded the PV 4.1.0 binaries, could that be the problem?

Here's a more expanded list of steps outlining the solution David gave
in case you are not very familiar with the contour filter and
animation controls in ParaView.

1. Create the streamlines as you normally would.

2. Add a Contour filter to the streamline (third toolbar, second
button from the left).

2.a. Change the Contour By property to IntegrationTime.
2.b. Press Apply.
This little trick will create a point on each streamline at a
particular time in the particle advection simulation that created the
streamlines.

3. Open the Animation View (View - Animation View)
3.a. On the bottom row, select the contour filter in the first chooser
box and Isosurfaces in the second chooser box. Then hit the blue plus
button at the left.

3.b. Make sure Mode is set to Sequence and change No. Frames to 100.
3.c. Hit the play button in the VCR controls (green triangle in the
top toolbar). You will see the dots animate over the streamlines.

3.d. You can adjust the speed of the animation by changing the No. Frames.

4. If you want to see glyphs instead of dots, just add the glyph
filter to the output of the contour filter.

BTW, props to Jean Favre for originally posting this solution to the
ParaView mailing list (http://markmail.org/message/ms57z7jjubh2pzjg).

Make an isocontour of the streamlines' integrationTime variable.
Then in animation view, make a track for the isocontour value.

2014-05-03 Thread Stephen Wornom

Mohammad Mirzadeh wrote:
Hi I am at a critical point in deciding I/O format for my application.
So far my conclusion is to use parallel HDF5 for restart files as they
are quite flexible and portable across systems.

When it comes to visualization, however, i'm not quite sure. Up until
now I've been using pvtu along with vtu files and although they
generally work fine, one easily gets in trouble when running big
simulations on large number of processors as the number of files can
easily get out of control and even simplest utility commands (e.g. ls)
takes minutes to finish!

After many thinking I've come to a point to decide between two strategies:

1) Go with a single parallel HDF5 file that includes data for all
time-steps. This makes it all nice and portable except there are two
issues. i) It looks like doing MPI-IO might not be as efficient as
separate POSIX IO, especially on large number of processors. ii)
ParaView does not seem to be able to read HDF5 files in parallel

2) Go with the same pvtu+vtu strategy except take precautions to avoid
file explosions. I can think of two strategies here: i) use nested
folders to separate vtu files from pvtu and also each time step ii)
create an IO group communicator with much less processors that do the
actual IO.

My questions are 1) Is the second approach necessarily more efficient
than MPI-IO used in HDF5? and 2) Is there any plan to support parallel
IO for HDF5 files in paraview?

[Paraview] PV 4.1.0 computing 3D lift and drag coefficients wing-body-nacelle combination

2014-04-25 Thread Stephen Wornom

I do:
- select extract surface
- select connectivity
- threshhold (to say what surface)
I now have the surface of the wing and nacelle visible.

To compute the lift and drag, I need to generate surface normals. But
this filter is not active.

How do I generate surface normals?
Thanks,
Stephen

  Hi Stephen,

The uname -a command is showing that you have installed a 32 bit version
  of
ubuntu (it should have x86_64 for 64 bit). This is why the 64 bit
applications are not working. It is possible to run 32 bit applications on
  a
64 bit operating system (with compatibility libraries) but it is not
  possible the other way around.

Hi,

Running huge sets of data using mpi and pvserver of the paraview
binaries has been an issue for me, it`s pretty unstable and crashes often

Can you be more specific as to huge. How many cores are you using?
Stephen

If i build paraview from source with mpi support, it will be better in
that aspect?

Att,

There are three equal sized views but 4 windows. If I add a title using
source in the middle window, the width of the title is limited. Is
there an easy to delete the 4th window and have the three views spread
over the full width of the visualization area. That way I could put a
longer title.

Hope my question is clear.

[Paraview] parallel paraview

2013-11-28 Thread Stephen Wornom
I launch the paraview server on nef using 32 xeon cores. I am using the
64-bit PV.
The server is listening on nef066. Paraview 3.14.1 has been install from

Next I start paraview 3.14.1 (binary version) on my workstation.
When I connect I get this error message

Hello,

I have a question about AnnotateTimeFilter. I have a Data Set ( h5

If i first merge these files and then open them as a single file using

But, if I just open one of these h5 files containing just one time

the Annotate Time Filter doesn´t work correctly and just shows Time=0
The time info is written in the .pvd file, if you load the pvd file, the
Annotate Time Filter works correctly.

If you load only a pvtu file the Annotate Time Filtershows Time=0.
Hope this helps,

I am trying to get pictures opening just single files, but I want to
show the time correctly.

Is there anyway to be able to make AnnotateTimeFilter show times
correctly?

[Paraview] PV 4.01 animating slices

2013-07-17 Thread Stephen Wornom
I would like to animate x-slices of the same calculation (x= 0.1, ...)
as opposed to animating a slice from different time solutions.

In earlier versions one could specify how many slices desired and the
step size (x= 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, ...etc). Is this feature somewhere to be
found in PV 4.01?

Hope my questions is clear.

If I move the mouse, or right click on the screen the image sometimes comes

I don't believe it is a PV problem, maybe, but rather associated to my linux

Re: [Paraview] PV 3.14.1 and 4.01 Calculator error

2013-07-02 Thread Stephen Wornom

Utkarsh Ayachit wrote:

You are correct, my error.

use * for multiply or ^ for power. Also what's the Function
you're typing in the Calculator. I ask since the errors says see
position 15 but K**2 doesn't have 15 characters.

I have a 64-bit linux machine so I downloaded the 64-bit version of 4.01.
However, I write my PV files are 32-bits (or at least the files say
32-bit), could that be a source of confusion for the 64-bit PV?
Maybe this was done when we had bot 32-bit and 64-bit machines. I will
write 64-bit hereafter to avoid any problem.

_*2nd-Point*_: when using the calculator with 4.01
If I want to calculate
0.09*Density*K^2/Epsilon
I enter
0.09 and select *
I get
*0.09 and not 0.09*
then I select the scalar Density
I get
Density0.09* and NOT
0.09*Density (or Density*0.09)
older version use left-to-right entries but 4.01 uses right-to-left entries
Hope this makes some sense.
Thanks,
Stephen

[Paraview] PV 3.10.0 animation avi playback

2012-10-07 Thread Stephen Wornom
I create an avi using mpi-PV with offscreen rendering. I note the following:
1-If the screensaver on my Linux Fedora 17 workstation is activated during the
rendering process (For example, I go away from my workstation), and I use for
playback
mplayer -sstep 1 file.avi
shows the progress bar in the middle of the screen during the playback (very
annoying).

2-If the screensaver is NOT activated during the rendering process,
mplayer -sstep 1 file.avi
does NOT the progress bar in the middle of the screem during the playback.

3- mplayer file.avi
does not show the progress bar but is unacceptably slow! Unfortunately, the
wall time to create the avi file is quite long and using offscreen rendering is
desired.

Question: Are there other faster playbacks tools other than mplayer -sstep 1
that would NOT show the progress bar?
Hope my question is clear.
Thanks in advance,

I have parallel unstructured data .pvd .pvtu and vtu data for each

Hi Sebastien,

The files were all time dependent data but some had a TimeRange but no
TimestepValues so I simply did:

TimestepValues = meshFine.TimestepValues
if len(TimestepValues) == 0:
  timerange = meshFine.GetProperty('TimeRange')
  steps = 100
TimestepValues = [timerange[1]*i/steps + timerange[0] for i in
range(steps)]

which works well enough. Hopefully this will help anyone else that
runs into the same issue.

Thank you again,

Extract Surface

This works for me (cylinder, sphere surfaces, ...etc)

Question:
I know that the final release will be PV-3.12.0 but what does the RC3
stands for in the release PV-3.12.0-RC3?

[Paraview] PV 3.12.0-RC3 error while loading shared libraries: libbz2.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

2011-11-04 Thread Stephen Wornom
I always download the 64-bit Paraview binary files. PV 3.10.1 worked
fine as did previous versions.

With PV-3.12.0 and PV-3.12.3 I get this error
 /home/swornom/ParaView-3.12.0-RC3-Linux-x86_64/lib/paraview-3.12/paraview:
error while loading shared libraries: libbz2.so.1.0: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory

Is this something easily corrected or must I make PV from the source
file? As I do not have root privileges I would like to avoid doing this.

Stephen
p.s.
I recently upgraded to Fedora 14, could this be the problem?

[Paraview] PV 3.10.1 cell data to point data

How does PV go from cell data to point data? Linear interpolation? or
2nd-order interpolation? on higher order than 2nd-order.

Thanks in advance,

Wow, not even a volume averaging? node value = sum (cell values * cell

where Normal is the surface normal vector

click on integrate variables computes the integral of P ds
I would like
Fx = integral of P nx ds
where nx ds is the surface area normal to the x-direction.
Hope my question is clear.

One way is to use the calculator filter to multiply the pressure by
the normal to get force per unit area on the cylinder. Then you can
use the integrate variables filter to get the total force on it.

If you don't have normals on your cylinder, you can use the generate
surface normals filter but that only works for polydata. The extract
surface should get you from any other data set to the polydata you want.

I have cell normals (vector) next I do
cell data to point data
extract surface
when I do calculator, the cell normal vector is not in the list. How do
I get the cell normal vector in the calculator list?

Thanks for your help,
Stephen

Re: [Paraview] PV 3.10.1 using python to slice and integrate variable

Thanks Pat,
Worked correctly (We saved the .py script for reference)
with the following exception.
The integrate variables opens a spread sheet with the different values.
We then do save data to save the spreadsheet.
Stop trace
*But* the trace does not contain the save spread sheet commands.
Therefore we do not see how to generalize the trace.py (add a loop over
theta 0 - 180).

Almost there, what do you suggest?
Many thanks for your help.

We are using PV to analyze flow around a sphere.

1- We extract the surface of the sphere from the mean flow solution.
2- We make a slice in x (say at the center x=0)
3- Then click integrate variables. Result: We get the integrated
values for the circle at x=0.
4- We would like to create a python script do automate this for
say 60 slices.

Would someone share a python script that we could adapt to do
this? (We have zero experience with python).
We would be greatly appreciative!
