[PestList] Re: beetle ID

2022-06-22 Thread Louis N Sorkin
Looks like black carpet beetle rather than black larder beetle. Dermestes ater
has a wider posterior curvature of the pronotum than either Attagenus brunneus
or Attagenus unicolor. Also head, antennae and eyes differ.

Hi all!

I’m hoping for some assistance with this beetle ID. Is it a black larder beetle?

Best wishes,

Abbie

[PestList] Webinar with Matt Mickletz on pest management in museums

2022-06-22 Thread Pat Kelley
Hello PestList,

As a reminder to everyone on this list, MuseumPests own Co-Chair, Matt
Mickletz, will be the special guest for a free webinar on all things RE: museum
pest management at noon EST this Friday, June 24. In a podcast type format, we
will be asking Matt about his path and experiences with MuseumPests, IPM and
all other things regarding his program and visions. I am excited to hear his
responses and tips on IPM. Here is a link for that free registration:

RE: [EXTERNAL] [PestList] Monitoring figures

2022-06-22 Thread 'Bacharach, Joan' via MuseumPests
Hello Alexandra;

Please do take a look at the "action thresholds" for different museum pests in
the US National Park Service Museum Handbook, Part I, Chapter 5: Biological
Infestations at https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/MHI/CHAP5.pdf

The chapter includes sample actions plans, information on inspection,
monitoring, control actions, identification of museum pests, as well as a
sample IPM plan and other sample forms that may be of use.

Best

Good afternoon list,

I hope you're all well.

I am currently writing an IPM instructions document for our institution. One of
the questions that often comes up is at what point do you have enough pests to
qualify for interventive treatment? Whilst attempting to get to zero pests is
lovely I'm not sure that's something that can be realistically achieved in most
institutions.

So, if for example you have a catch of silverfish in one of your traps, how
many would one catch before saying you have too many and need to put down some
pesticide? 5/10/20? Considering the blunder traps are only a small
representation of floor space in the store if you have say 10 silverfish in the
traps I assume that the amount of silverfish in the store overall is much
greater.

Does anyone have a hard cut off line for what is a reasonable amount of pest
activity or a "manageable" amount? Or if you just have some thoughts on the
topic that would be great!

Thank you so much,

Alexandra Wade
