Bug#474740: sauerbraten: Hangs on the start on a dual-head system

 Package: sauerbraten
 Version: 0.0.20071227.dfsg-2
 Severity: normal

I recently upgraded my system to a dual-head configuration. The large
 virtual screen
(3584x1600) is mapped onto the left monitor which is 2560x1600, and onto the
 right monitor
which is 1152x864. Since I had done that lots of newly installed games from
 Debian
hung on start with the following symptoms: the right monitor goes black.
 Sauerbraten
was relatively fine: it started on the whole virtual screen, and I could go
 and change it
to windowed mode and play. However, when I have moved the ~/.sauerbraten
 directory in the
hope that it will make Sauerbraten save my configuration, the hanging and
 black screen
 at start resulted.

hi,

have you already tried starting sauerbraten directly in windowed mode
and/or turning of shader effects? please try to launch saurbraten by
sauerbraten -w640 -h480 -t -f. usually it should start in a small
window without any shader effects (see sauerbraten's manpage for details
about the parameters). if this helps out, we've at least found a
workaround.
and some obligatory questions: what kind of graphics card is in the
affected machine? which driver are you using for that card, and did you
install the driver from the packages shipped with debian and are they
really used in the xorg.conf configuration file?

hi,

have you had a look at the torus-trooper man-page? the command line

so torus-trooper is not limited to a special resolution, you

Bug#441765: broken ARG_PROGRAM compiler?

2007-09-11 Thread Bruno Kleinert
hi,

since the engine runs on the intel card without vertex shader programs
it might be a bug in the intel shader program compiler. but also i
found this in the sauerbraten documentation:
(from /usr/share/doc/sauerbraten-data/docs/static_wiki/Performance
Guide.html):

Shaders
[...]
Note that if your card doesn't support them, they will be turned off
automatically already. [...]

maybe sauerbraten doesn't detect this correctly, because i'm in doubt
if the intel cards really support alle kinds of shader programs. could
you please paste the output of glxinfo | grep ARB? (glxinfo can be

hi,

it's nice to see people being interested in extending trigger! YAY!

some weeks ago i talked to stefan potyra who's in the 'uploaders' field
of the trigger package. he told me that trigger upstream isn't active
anymore, but stefan has access to the trigger subversion (or was it
cvs?) repository! since i also made 3 maps for trigger, which i
consider good enough to be included withing the trigger upstream
repository i asked him to include them, but he was too busy at that
time.

so i think we should manage to get good trigger maps into trigger and
perhaps make stefan do a new relase ;) in this case i'd suggest to have
all maps covered by the gpl, since all other trigger game content is
covered by the gpl and i prefer to avoid yes, but... situations ;)

if things go wrong or it turns out this is a bad idea we still can fall
back and create a maps addon package for trigger.

sorry, i forgot to suggest to run sauerbraten in windowed-mode for that
test. it's done that way:

cd /usr/lib/games/sauerbraten
gdb ./sauer_client

then, at the gdb prompt type
run -t

this should start sauerbraten in a window. if the window captures your
mouse pointer, you should still be able to alt+tab through the
windows (maybe you're running a different window manager, which has
different keyboard shortcuts to change focus). then you can press
enter every time gdb will ask you to do so.
i hope this does the trick!

meanwhile, i had another idea, what you could try! please run
sauerbraten from a shell by that command:

sauerbraten -t -f

this *should* start off sauerbraten in windowed-mode (-t) and disable
all shader effects (-f). i tested it on my (amd64) machine - works.

i suggest to test this, because in the output you pasted before i
noticed you're running the r300 open source ati driver, which is known
to be a bit buggy for some games. if disabling all shader effects does
the trick for you to avoid the crash, it may be a bug in the r300

 Hello,

How about we add Game-related tools or something like that to the
Debian menu policy? There are a lot of such tools which do not fit
into the usual game categories, but spreading them over the apps
categories also seems like a bad option.

Two examples where such a tools section would be needed are level
editors and GGZ core clients for networking. A player would certainly
expect those under Games/ instead of under Apps/editors and
 Apps/networking.

Such a change would have to be discussed on debian-devel, but
gathering some pro/con voices here seems fitting.

hi josef,

first of all, i consider the debian menu system as deprecated since
freedesktop.org released the desktop menu standard draft [1]. i looked
through their menu categories, and they also don't have a subcategory
for game-related menu entries. so i think things should be discussed
with freedesktop first.

on the other hand, is it really worth to extend the menu categories?
sure, all game-related tools/helper applications/etc. would fit under a
menu sub-entry like game related tools, but in my eyes they do fit
well into the existing categories!

a map editor is still a software development tool, a network game
server scanner is still a network application - so i'm not sure if it's
worth adding an extra category for such applications. this might lead
to ambigous situations, because (don't take this too serious, please!)
gimp should also appear below game related tools as it can be used to
paint textures for games.

but i'm with you, if you say placing a level editor below games is
wrong. such an entry belongs elsewhere, i'd suggest it belonging to
software development.

@marco: have you tried to rename the directory .supertuxkart in your

supertuxkart to create a new .supertuxkart in your home. if there was

in your supplied files i noticed, that you're using the open source
radeon driver for your graphics card. i'm sorry to tell you, but this
driver is known to be buggy for nexuiz.

if your graphics hardware is supported by ati's closed source driver
fglrx, could you please try nexuiz with this driver and check if the
problems still exists?

i only have nvidia crads around driven by nvidia's closed source driver
and cannot reproduce the error - neither on i386 nor on amd64.

regards - fuddl
