Bug#438676: hex-a-hop: Switch to po4a for man page translation
Hello Jens, On Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 03:41:02AM +0200, Jens Seidel wrote: first of all sorry for ignoring your patch so long. On Sat, Aug 18, 2007 at 11:24:04PM +0200, Helge Kreutzmann wrote: Well, 5 days is not so long (I've bug report being ignored (even with patch) for over one year!) 1. Add the following line in your debian/rules, where X1, X2, X3, .. are all languages you've received man page translations for: po4a-updatepo -f man -m hex-a-hop.6 -p hex-a-hop.X1.po -p hex-a-hop.X2.po -p hex-a-hop.X3.po This call will synchronise the various .po files with the original (there is no .pot file involved!). I do not like the fact that still another PO/POT file is involved. Wouldn't it be easier for translators to have only one PO/POT file? This way it is also possible to reuse common translations and to check for consistency in the program and manual page. Fine with me, but as I am not a debconf wizard, I am afraid, I can't help you with this non-standard use case. So far, man pages have been dealt differently than debconf or program messages. Could it be that it is impossible to handle this with one POT file? Shouln't we file a few wishlist bugs against po4a, gettext, ...? I don't know, feel free to submit a wishlist bug. 3. For each language you've received translations for, add the following line in your debian/rules: po4a-translate -f man -m hex-a-hop.6 -p hex-a-hop.Xi.po -a hex-a-hop.Xi.add -l hex-a-hop.Xi.6 This should work even if hex-a-hop.Xi.po contains more messages (includes the master PO file), right? Yes, this should work even then. 4. Add the following note where other people can find it, e.g. README.Debian: Note to translators: Do you really think this belongs to README.Debian? It is an internal detail (we also do not install the POT file in binaries -- only in source). If we use only a single PO file we do not need to explain anything, right? Please note I said e.g.. And yes, a single PO file would suffice, though I still suggest adding a note that a man page is involved as well. 6. Once you received hex-a-hop.vi.po, hex-a-hop.de.po, hex-a-hop.de.add and possibly hex-a-hop.vi.add, copy them to debian/. Hey, what about Russian, Bulgarian, Dutch and Spanish :-? No prejudice against any langauge, I just used an example at the time this transition was made (and especially the vi translator requested this change on a public maling list). Helge, can you test it and update de.po? Thanks. My observations (please tell me if you want bug reports): 1.Because of the problem mentioned earlier (\- invalid?) the German man page was not build, but I only noticed it because I was looking for it. Maybe include a check, that all languages who build once are present in each new version and fail otherwise? 2. The German man page addendum is missing. Please include it. If needed, I can resend it, of course. 3. The mouse cursor is missing inside hex-a-hop. This renders the navigation awkward. I double checked, in 0.0.20070315-3 this was not the case, so this is clearly a regression. 4. When launching the game from an xterm, I get the new messages: Warning: don't know window with for message: Warning: don't know window with for message: Spiel fortfahren 1 (89% komplett) Maybe this is related to 3. 5. Trying to scroll on the map kills the game (segfault) and the following message is printed: Writing binary file save1.dat (/home/helge/.hex-a-hop/save1.dat) *** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x0061ec00 *** Abgebrochen As this has happended *never* before to me, this is a huge regression, so I revert now to -3 for playing again. Of course, releasing with 3. and 5. will cause (at least important in the latter case) bug reports. Should we replace the - by \(hy as suggested by the documentation? If so, this should happend rather soonish, as some non-latin languages might need to translate this as well. Yep, I fixed this once. I also compared the old and new manpage. They are identical (except comments). Yes, I also compared all strings, and the only difference I saw where line breaks (which are of course only in source). If you need more information or extra help for the other issues I reported please tell me, though looking at my time table, I am probably rather tight this weekend. Bug#438676: hex-a-hop: Switch to po4a for man page translation
Package: hex-a-hop Version: 0.0.20070315-3 Severity: wishlist Tags: l10n patch As promised. Actually, its quite simple. 1. 2. Remove existing translations (currently only German). Do *not* send me any file, simply inform me (best before upload) about the switch, and I provide you a hex-a-hop.de.po (see also below). 3. For each language you've received translations for, add the following line in your debian/rules: po4a-translate -f man -m hex-a-hop.6 -p hex-a-hop.Xi.po -a hex-a-hop.Xi.add -l hex-a-hop.Xi.6 where Xi is the two letter language code. This call will build the actual localized man pages. Using some make file trickery, you might get this call down to two lines, one for languages with, one for languages without an addendum. The addendum is a locale dependent paragraph, typically stating the translator and his copyright. 4. Add the following note where other people can find it, e.g. README.Debian: Note to translators: There are three parts to translate for hex-a-hop. Please obtain the current source (apt-get source hex-a-hop) and change into hex-a-hop/debian. a) The programm messages. Run: make -f i18n/Makefile hex-a-hop.pot and copy hex-a-hop.pot to your language, e.g. vi.po. Translate it as usual. b) The man page. Run: po4a-updatepo -f man -m hex-a-hop.6 -p hex-a-hop.X1.po where you replace X1 with your language code, e.g. vi. Translate it as usual. If you want to add an extra paragraph, e.g. describing your copyright for the translation or other language dependent information, create a file named hex-a-hop.X1.add. The first line of this file must read: PO4A-HEADER:mode=after;position=AUTHOR;beginboundary=\.SH Please *only* replace the word AUTHOR by the translation of this word to your language. For more details read po4a(7). c) The desktop file: Simply tell us the translation for Puzzle game based on hexagonal tiles Afterwards send us X1.po, hex-a-hop.X1.po and the translation of the string from c) using reportbug(1). Of course, we also accept partial translations, e.g. a) OR b) OR c). We will include your translation in the next release of hex-a-hop. 5. Send hex-a-hop.vi.po to Clytie (of course without any vi string, just generated as stated in 4 b)) and inform me that you switch to po4a. 6. Once you received hex-a-hop.vi.po, hex-a-hop.de.po, hex-a-hop.de.add and possibly hex-a-hop.vi.add, copy them to debian/. 7. Add po4a to your build-depends in debian/control 8. Add the appropriate changelog entry(s) 9. Rebuild the package A. Upload the package B.
