The following pipeline with theoraenc multipass-mode=first-pass caught
SIGSEGV. Encoding with theoraenc single-pass works fine. Multipass
encoding with vp8enc also works.
Reencoding to theora in multipass-mode with other video files in
different formats (avi, flv) also doesn't work. A file Multipass.txt
with 0 bytes is created in the home directory.
I use aptosid, but gstreamer is not part of the distribution.

thanks for reporting this. I fixed this upstream now and the fix will be
included in the next upstream release, 1.0.8.

Forgot to mention that, to be able to use two-pass encoding you must set
a bitrate on theoraenc. Otherwise it will just error out.
