Bug#327132: tomcat5: Sun java5 available in Debian
On Wed, 2006-05-17 at 22:48 -0500, Barry Hawkins wrote: [...] Hello, now that sun-java5-jdk is available in Debian (also if in non-free) it would be very nice to have tomcat 5.5.x packaged :) [...] Thanks for the update regarding the news about Sun Java 5 in non-free. We have always had access to the Sun Java 5 JDK via java-package, but its presence in non-free does not mean we would knock tomcat5 out of main in order to quickly bump up the version in our Tomcat packaging. See section 2.12 of Debian Policy[0] for more information. [0] - http://www.us.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-sections I understand, and thanks for the link to the documentation. Would it be possible to have for example a tomcat55 package in non-free then? The problem is that tomcat5 is a bit outdated and very unmantained from upstream (since many, many months). For example we are unable to use some kind of features due to very old bugs like the one reported here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=355240 Rendering the package mostly useless (for us, at least). Bug#356067: marked as done (Configuration option not to start jetty and/or package split)
Your message dated Thu, 18 May 2006 12:40:35 +0200 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Startup of jetty can be controled by the init scripts has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: jetty Version: 5.1.5rc1-6 Severity: wishlist Hi, It would be nice to be able not to start Jetty. I installed the package to get Jetty's jars (org.mortbay.jetty.jar, jetty.jar), and I'm not interested in the default Debian daemon. This is to embed jetty in another application. A configuration option in /etc/default/jetty, potentially handled via debconf, would be nice. However, it might be more sensible to create some libjetty*-java packages, reflecting one of the uses of Jetty: embedding a server in other applications. I suppose the HTTP part and the WebApp part should be split in different packages too. If you're not fixing for now, then don't tag it wontfix, tag it help. A package split isn't required, I propose a NO_START flag, or whatever you prefer as a name for the flag. Please consider the attached patch which also fixes the following bug when the package is removed and not purged: bee# /etc/init.d/jetty start Starting Jetty servlet engine: mesg: /dev/pts/0: Operation not permitted -su: /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-sun/bin/java -Xmx256m -Djava.awt.headless=true-Djava.io.tmpdir=/var/cache/jetty -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib -DSTART=/etc/jetty/start.config -Djetty.home=/usr/share/jetty -jar /usr/share/jetty/lib/start.jar /etc/jetty/jetty.xml /var/log/jetty/out.log 21 echo $!: No such file or directory With update-rc.d the startup of jetty can be controled like any other daemon. And still, on my system: /etc/default/apache2: NO_START=1 /etc/default/bittorrent: START_BTTRACK=0 /etc/default/bluetooth: HIDD_ENABLED=0, DUND_ENABLED=0, PAND_ENABLED=0 /etc/default/bootlogd: BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=No /etc/default/dbus: ENABLED=1 /etc/default/distcc: STARTDISTCC=false /etc/default/fetchmail: START_DAEMON=no /etc/default/hddtemp: RUN_DAEMON=false /etc/default/irda-utils: ENABLE=true ...
