Bug#458606: /usr/bin/eclipse: sudo apt-get --purge remove libswt3.2-gtk-* reinstall worked for me.
severity 458606 normal thanks On Wed, Jan 02, 2008 at 11:03:49AM +0800, Jivan Amara wrote: Package: eclipse Version: 3.2.1-6 Severity: grave File: /usr/bin/eclipse Justification: renders package unusable This bug started for me after installing and removing two UML editors that interface with Eclipse: Omondo, and Poseidon, using their own installers rather than apt. I suspect these packages have caused the problem in my case. I still think there is an issue with the Eclipse apt package or dependencies though, as uninstalling the package (and other eclipse packages) and reinstalling it did not resolve the issue. Following that attempt, I uninstalled all eclipse packages again, and manually purged all remaining eclipse files from my system. The subsequent install was still broken. After that I found the tip listed in the subject above, and this worked for me to get back to Eclipse. If this is terribly pressing, I'd be willing to set aside an hour to try installing and removing the packages listed again to see if I can recreate the problem. It is really unlikely that purging and reinstalling libswt3.2-gtk-java, libswt3.2-gtk-jni or libswt3.2-gtk-gcj has fixed anything on your system as they all have no conffiles attached to them. It must be some related package. Its hard to say as you dont quoted the original error message. Can you please recheck this? I downgrade this bug to severity normal for now, as it is not reproducible to me and its not a bug (at least not RC) when some installer (Omondo or Poseidon) changes under apts feet.
