This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 299635: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=299635 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems ---BeginMessage--- Package: tomcat4 Version: 4.1.31-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch It would be great to have the init.d script to actually get the NAME variable from the file name instead of being hardcoded into the script. Setting NAME=`basename $0` should do the trick. It is useful to manage different instances of tomcat. This way I can create a symbolic link to the script to force it to use another NAME, which in turn forces the use of another CATALINA_HOME and default file (/etc/default/NAME). Into the latter file there is a redefinition of CATALINA_BASE too. Using this trick, I'm able to create a new set of directory links to the packaged tomcat dirs and new directories containing the new instance's webapps. This approach would let me upgrade the tomcat4 package smoothly without change every single instance configured in the system. Please consider also changing the definition of CATALINA-BASE from CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/tomcat4 to CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/$NAME even this one is not necessary because it can be ovverriden from /etc/default/$NAME file. I even created a context configuration file in /var/lib/tomcat5/conf/Catalina/localhost/, but I keep getting the same error: INFO: Missing application web.xml, using defaults only StandardEngine[Catalina].StandardHost[localhost].StandardContext[/sps-ar] Obviously, the web.xml is still there. Bug#437136: tomcat5 (5.0.30) is not compatible with system installed ant 1.6.5
Package: tomcat5 Version: 5.0.30-12 Apache ships tomcat 5.0.30 with ant 1.6.2, while Debian Etch has ant 1.6.5 installed system wide. On two different Etch installs, I had the following problem occuring when accessing JSP files that needed to be compiled: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP org.apache.jasper.JspCompilationContext.compile(JspCompilationContext.java:520) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.service(JspServletWrapper.java:295) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.serviceJspFile(JspServlet.java:292) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.service(JspServlet.java:236) javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:802) com.angkor.struts.filter.AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.doFilter(AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.java:109) root cause java.lang.NullPointerException java.util.Hashtable.put(Hashtable.java:394) org.apache.tools.ant.PropertyHelper.setProperty(PropertyHelper.java:335) org.apache.tools.ant.Project.setPropertyInternal(Project.java:460) org.apache.tools.ant.Project.setSystemProperties(Project.java:800) org.apache.tools.ant.Project.init(Project.java:261) org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler.getProject(Compiler.java:116) org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler.generateClass(Compiler.java:321) org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler.compile(Compiler.java:498) org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler.compile(Compiler.java:477) org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler.compile(Compiler.java:465) org.apache.jasper.JspCompilationContext.compile(JspCompilationContext.java:511) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.service(JspServletWrapper.java:295) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.serviceJspFile(JspServlet.java:292) org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.service(JspServlet.java:236) javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:802) com.angkor.struts.filter.AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.doFilter(AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.java:109) A restart of tomcat would normally fix the problem, but then other pages would start having this seemingly random problem. Downgrading to ant 1.6.2 from oldstable fixed the problem completely. This looks like a bug in either Ant or Tomcat. I would suspect Ant, since the problem is that a NULL key is inserted into a Map inside the ant code base, which should be checked for. ___ pkg-java-maintainers mailing list pkg-java-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-java-maintainers
tomcat5 REMOVED from testing

Bug#388457: tomcat5 don't find the ejc.jar
Hi. I don't see any reason why this is a serious bug, neither a bug at all, apart from preventing Tomcat entering etch. Like other libraries, it is the local administrator's responsibility to set the CLASSPATH accordingly or, in Tomcat's case, use the common and shared directories, as you already know. Please close this bug or downgrade the severity. See section 2.12 of Debian Policy[0] for more information. [0] - http://www.us.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-sections I understand, and thanks for the link to the documentation. Would it be possible to have for example a tomcat55 package in non-free then? The problem is that tomcat5 is a bit outdated and very unmantained from upstream (since many, many months). For example we are unable to use some kind of features due to very old bugs like the one reported here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=355240 Rendering the package mostly useless (for us, at least). Bug#337270: tomcat5: Suggest java-gcj-compat-dev
Hi David, David N. Welton wrote: Wolfgang Baer wrote: So I assume before installing java-gcj-compat-dev you had only kaffe installed ? Or also a non-free runtime providing java2-runtime ? I had kaffe. Can you say what did not work correctly before ? What is in the various tomcat logs (/var/log/tomcat5/*) ? The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly This environment variable is needed to run this program NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE OK. This explains it and I think I got it now. I assume - beside kaffe - you also had java-gcj-compat (not the -dev package) installed before. The JDK_DIRS variable in tomcat5 init script has the java-gcj-compat directory before the kaffe directory. As you had installed kaffe and java-gcj-compat on your system the tomcat5 installation found kaffe and the depends are satisfied. During startup when tomcat5 init script looks for a usable JDK directory it founds first /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj (as this is there throught java-gcj-compat) and takes it although not the -dev package is installed. So its a bug which is not solvable by dependencies alone. We will have to implement some more logic into the init script to test if only java-gcj-compat or the wanted java-gcj-compat-dev is installed if we find /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj directory. Please check if java-gcj-compat was also installed before so I know my analysis is correct.
