It would be great to have the init.d script to actually get the NAME
variable from the file name instead of being hardcoded into the script.
Setting NAME=`basename $0` should do the trick.
It is useful to manage different instances of tomcat.
This way I can create a symbolic link to the script to force it to use
another NAME, which in turn forces the use of another CATALINA_HOME and
default file (/etc/default/NAME). Into the latter file there is a
redefinition of CATALINA_BASE too. Using this trick, I'm able to create
a new set of directory links to the packaged tomcat dirs and new
directories containing the new instance's webapps. This approach would
let me upgrade the tomcat4 package smoothly without change every single
instance configured in the system.
Please consider also changing the definition of CATALINA-BASE from
CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/tomcat4 to CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/$NAME even this
one is not necessary because it can be ovverriden from
/etc/default/$NAME file.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

When viewing documentation through tomcat, we have a nicely colorued
servlet examples.
I found that RequestHeader example is different in documentation, and
different in real.

This documentation is by default on:
http://localhost:8180/servlets-examples/reqheaders.html
and file is in:
/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps/servlets-examples/reqheaders.html

and when you click the execute button, above the example, the result is a bit
different that expected.

The real source of this file is in:
/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps/servlets-examples/WEB-INF/classes/RequestHeaderExample.java

It seems that there are old exmamples in colorful html, and different in real
classes. Aren't they automaticly generated?

2009-12-07 Thread Niels Thykier
Hi

This bug has been reassigned from tomcat5 to tomcat6 - can you still
reproduce this problem in tomcat6?

I think the webapps have been renamed to examples but it still
possible that we no longer ship these.

After installation of tomcat5 it didn't run because of some su issue. I
figured out that the problem was due to one line in my /etc/pam.d/su
that goes:

auth requisite pam_wheel.so group=wheel debug

After commenting this out the su problem appeared no more, but tomcat5
complaint about bad permissions of /usr/sbin/rotatelogs, which was 0750
root:root. I had to change yet another thing in order to get tomcat5
simply initializing.

Now I don't know what to do with this /etc/pam.d/su because I wanted to
restrict access to su and yet, I want to allow tomcat5 existence.

BTW: This su thing was also killing me, while trying jetty from
unstable.

Daemonizing by using shell backgrounding alone leaves the daemon
processes exposed to SIGHUP. This can be a problem when the daemon is
started in an environment controlled by debconf.

Using nohup introduces no new dependencies and protects the java and
rotatelogs processes from being killed when debconf shuts down.

After installing tomcat, I found a lot of errors in the logs and I was
unable to deploy webapps. I found that everything under the following
directory was owned by the group 'nogroup':

/var/lib/tomcat5/work/Catalina/localhost

I changed the group ownership recursively under this directory and
everything worked fine.

I'm really not sure which package this applies to, since I'm using tomcat5 for
the first time and I might be confused.

When I'm using tomcat5 with kaffe, I put a link to my webapp's dir in
/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps, and Just Works (tm). But, it takes AGES, like a full
minute, to finish server startup (it's a fast machine).

When trying with java (I only changed JAVA_HOME in /etc/default/tomcat5).
Autodeploy doesn't work anymore. I even created a context configuration file in
/var/lib/tomcat5/conf/Catalina/localhost/, but I keep getting the same error:

INFO: Missing application web.xml, using defaults only
StandardEngine[Catalina].StandardHost[localhost].StandardContext[/sps-ar]

Obviously, the web.xml is still there.

Also worth noting, when using this JVM, server startup takes a tenth of the
time comparing with kaffe.

Apache ships tomcat 5.0.30 with ant 1.6.2, while Debian Etch has ant

On two different Etch installs, I had the following problem occuring

com.angkor.struts.filter.AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.doFilter(AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.java:109)

A restart of tomcat would normally fix the problem, but then other pages
would start having this seemingly random problem.

Downgrading to ant 1.6.2 from oldstable fixed the problem completely.

This looks like a bug in either Ant or Tomcat. I would suspect Ant,
since the problem is that a NULL key is inserted into a Map inside the
ant code base, which should be checked for.

I don't know anything about java or tomcat :(

I was hoping the java team could help to assign bugs that still apply to
tomcat6 and left the ones
that doesn't, so I can massively close them.

Thanks

Does this error occured when disabling the Angkor Struts Filter?

2007-08-10 Thread Cedric Veilleux
Package: tomcat5
Version: 5.0.30-12

Apache ships tomcat 5.0.30 with ant 1.6.2, while Debian Etch has ant
1.6.5 installed system wide.

On two different Etch installs, I had the following problem occuring
when accessing JSP files that needed to be compiled:

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

org.apache.jasper.JspCompilationContext.compile(JspCompilationContext.java:520)

javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:802)

com.angkor.struts.filter.AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.doFilter(AngkorVersionAndLanguageFilter.java:109)

A restart of tomcat would normally fix the problem, but then other pages
would start having this seemingly random problem.

Downgrading to ant 1.6.2 from oldstable fixed the problem completely.

This looks like a bug in either Ant or Tomcat. I would suspect Ant,
since the problem is that a NULL key is inserted into a Map inside the
ant code base, which should be checked for.

tomcat5 REMOVED from testing

2007-08-03 Thread Debian testing watch

Bug #425296: RM: tomcat5 -- RoM; superseded by tomcat5.5

The script that generates this mail tries to extract removal
reasons from comments in the britney hint files. Those comments
were not originally meant to be machine readable, so if the
reason for removing your package seems to be nonsense, it is
probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the

Ouch, that was caused by my upload of the new libjaxen-java. I will upload a

reason for removing your package seems to be nonsense, it is
probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the

Bug#388457: tomcat5 don't find the ejc.jar

2006-10-03 Thread Javier Serrano Polo
Hi.

I don't see any reason why this is a serious bug, neither a bug at all,
apart from preventing Tomcat entering etch.
Like other libraries, it is the local administrator's responsibility to
set the CLASSPATH accordingly or, in Tomcat's case, use the common and
shared directories, as you already know.

Please close this bug or downgrade the severity.
Thanks.

Bug#388130: tomcat5: dies if started under debconf

2006-09-18 Thread Darrin Thompson
Package: tomcat5
Version: 5.0.30-10
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Daemonizing by using shell backgrounding alone leaves the daemon
processes exposed to SIGHUP. This can be a problem when the daemon is
started in an environment controlled by debconf.

Using nohup introduces no new dependencies and protects the java and
rotatelogs processes from being killed when debconf shuts down.

Hi,

Could not start Tomcat 5 servlet engine because no Java Development Kit
(JDK) was found. Please download and install JDK 1.3 or higher and set
JAVA_HOME in /etc/default/tomcat5 to the JDK's installation directory.

Adding /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun to the JDK dirs tomcat starts up
without errors. Here is the patch:

apache-utils is now a virtual package, provided by apache2-utils.
Since virtual packages don't have any version, version dependency
should be removed.

Yes this would be the best way. Cause so it is posible that tomcat5 and
tomcat5.5 runs on the same Server with different users. But if you do
you must keep the people in mind that already has installed the package.

Thanks for help on this bug.

No Problem I need it here for some productiv webservices. If there is a
new package I can test it. But it must be runable under testing.

I think the better way would be to check at remove/purge if the other
package is installed, and if yes, not to remove the tomcat5 user. That
way we could even replace it with a (IMO) more sane tomcat users.

OK, I'll try to patch the postrm script

I installed the Debian package with apt-get install sun-java5-bin. I
realize now that this is a non-free package, so feel free to lower the
severity of this bug. Problems with non-free packages are not
necessarily RC.

 make-jpkg should put it
 into /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun, not under lib/jvm.
I don't know the Java policy, or the make-jpkg tool. Perhaps Matthias,
the maintainer of sun-java5-bin, can tell why lib/jvm is used? I have
added him as CC.

Shobhit,
I have replied to your ITP; tomcat5.5 is in experimental. The
Debian Developers Reference is a great (and essential) guide to getting
started; the specific secction on what to do before filing an ITP can be
found here:

http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-newpackage

While it only explicitly specifies checking the WNPP, the underlying
assumption is that one will have checked the distributions as well for a
pre-existing package. Best wishes in your endeavors and welcome aboard.

CVE-2006-3835: Apache Tomcat 5 before 5.5.17 allows remote attackers to

extension, as demonstrated by URLs ending with /;index.jsp and
 /;help.do.

The original report to full-disclosure [1] indicates that the 5.0.x
series is also affected. The reporter claims to have verified it with
5.0.28; I have not tried to reproduce it with Debian's 5.0.30.

I can't reproduce the attack with 5.0.30. I'll upgrade the 5.5 serie.

Thanks for your report.

Bug#374928: tomcat5: unable to deploy after installation

2006-06-21 Thread winston
Package: tomcat5
Version: 5.0.30-9
Severity: important

After installing tomcat, I found a lot of errors in the logs and I was
unable to deploy webapps. I found that everything under the following
directory was owned by the group 'nogroup':

/var/lib/tomcat5/work/Catalina/localhost

I changed the group ownership recursively under this directory and
everything worked fine.

tomcat5 startup - action fails, complaining script is missing

2006-05-30 Thread freeone3000

apt-file list tomcat5 shows the .policy scripts in the proper package.
However, on install, it fails to start, giving me this:

Starting Tomcat 5 servlet engine using Java from
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun: cat: /etc/tomcat5/policy.d/*.policy: No such
file or directory
invoke-rc.d: initscript tomcat5, action start failed.

Doesn't seem to be anything on the first few pages of google
describing this, and it should be in the package, according to
apt-file. Just a simple bug report. Thanks.

Bug#369270: tomcat5-webapps: working servlet examples are different than those in documentation

2006-05-28 Thread Emil Nowak
Package: tomcat5-webapps
Version: 5.0.30-9
Severity: minor

When viewing documentation through tomcat, we have a nicely colorued
servlet examples.
I found that RequestHeader example is different in documentation, and
different in real.

This documentation is by default on:
http://localhost:8180/servlets-examples/reqheaders.html
and file is in:
/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps/servlets-examples/reqheaders.html

and when you click the execute button, above the example, the result is a bit
different that expected.

The real source of this file is in:
/var/lib/tomcat5/webapps/servlets-examples/WEB-INF/classes/RequestHeaderExample.java

It seems that there are old exmamples in colorful html, and different in real
classes. Aren't they automaticly generated?

Thanks for the update regarding the news about Sun Java 5 in non-free.
We have always had access to the Sun Java 5 JDK via java-package, but its
presence in non-free does not mean we would knock tomcat5 out of main in
order to quickly bump up the version in our Tomcat packaging. See section
2.12 of Debian Policy[0] for more information.

 [0] - http://www.us.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-sections

I understand, and thanks for the link to the documentation.

Would it be possible to have for example a tomcat55 package in non-free
then?

The problem is that tomcat5 is a bit outdated and very unmantained from
upstream (since many, many months).
For example we are unable to use some kind of features due to very old
bugs like the one reported here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=355240

Rendering the package mostly useless (for us, at least).

Thanks,
Alex

Wolfgang Baer worked on tomcat5.5.x. It runs with j2re1.4 and it's
nearly ready. You can find it in svn. I don't had time to test it yet
but I'll work on it asap... T5.5 works with free jre's and should be
available in main.

Cheers,

That's a very bad idea IMHO too ;-)

Also I wonder why an application needs to

Maybe to read the dtd's?.. But I don't know JSF.

There are no missing permissions at all - Everything
required to run tomcat5 (with its bundled applications)
is there.

The setting of policies for web applications is in the
responsibility of the administrator. The package maintainers
cannot know what will be installed on tomcat in the end.

catalina wasn't able to deploy use a jsf aplication in
a war file.

I solved the problem adding this lines to
04webapps.policy.
How this stuff could be workarrounded ?

Seems you have already workaround it by adding your
needed stuff in 04webapps.policy. However I would suggest
using a per webapp file for the new permissions and let
the existing file only be used for the tomcat bundled policy.

 permission java.io.FilePermission
/var/lib/tomcat5/temp/-, read,write,delete;

 permission java.io.FilePermission
/var/lib/tomcat5/conf/Catalina/-,
read,write,delete;
 permission java.net.SocketPermission
java.sun.com:80, connect,resolve;

You didn't say what application you are trying to deploy.
However giving complete permissions to the configuration

Tomcat ought to suggest java-gcj-compat-dev so that it actually runs when
you install it. As it was, I had to read the /etc/default/tomcat5 file to
find the correct packages to install.

Hi David,

please explain why tomcat5 should suggest java-gcj-compat-dev. It already
(conditional) depends on it. The current depends line is enough to get a
working tomcat5 IMHO. It either pulls kaffe or java-gcj-compat-dev in.
During startup it will pickup the first available on the path.

Regards,
Wolfgang

Hrm... then something else isn't right, because it was not starting.
When I installed java-gcj-compat-dev, it started functioning correctly.

So I assume before installing java-gcj-compat-dev you had only kaffe
installed ? Or also a non-free runtime providing java2-runtime ?

Can you say what did not work correctly before ? What is in the
various tomcat logs (/var/log/tomcat5/*) ?

Wolfgang

OK. This explains it and I think I got it now.

I assume - beside kaffe - you also had java-gcj-compat (not the -dev
package) installed before. The JDK_DIRS variable in tomcat5 init script
has the java-gcj-compat directory before the kaffe directory.

As you had installed kaffe and java-gcj-compat on your system the tomcat5
installation found kaffe and the depends are satisfied. During startup
when tomcat5 init script looks for a usable JDK directory it founds first
/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj (as this is there throught java-gcj-compat) and takes
it although not the -dev package is installed.

So its a bug which is not solvable by dependencies alone. We will have
to implement some more logic into the init script to test if only
java-gcj-compat or the wanted java-gcj-compat-dev is installed if we
find /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj directory.

Please check if java-gcj-compat was also installed before so I know
my analysis is correct.

Thanks,
Wolfgang

Bug#336984: tomcat5: package description references tomcat4-webapps -- s/4/5/ ?

2005-11-01 Thread Vineet Kumar
Package: tomcat5
Version: 5.0.30-7
Severity: minor

The package description includes this text:

No documentation or web applications (webapps) are included here,
please install the tomcat4-webapps package if you want them.

The package metadata Suggests: tomcat5-webapps, and I guess that that's
what the description should say as well.

This example:

http://localhost:8180/jsp-examples/jsp2/jspx/svgexample.html

points to this other URL:

http://localhost:8080/jsp-examples/jsp2/jspx/textRotate.jspx?name=JSPX

The port is wrong. I think the correct way to fix is to change it to:

a href=/jsp-examples/jsp2/jspx/textRotate.jspx?name=JSPX ... /a

... so it takes the correct basedir.

Thanks,
Pablo.
