If you consider it more important than have me do tidying for that

 Thanks for replying and trying.

For what it's worth, DebConf10 videoteam is using the experimental
ffmpeg packages backported to a squeeze snapshot. dvswitch and
ffmpeg2theora both use ffmpeg libraries. Everything is working well. So,
it might be feasible to provide backports more broadly.

Far from ideal, but, at least it's an option.

for a limited set of packages, that's indeed an option. However, we
*will* break other packages with that, that's why I don't think
backports.org would be a solution for that, unless we do the full
transition.

message to ~/.xsession-errors:

[fvwm][scanForPixmap]: WARNING Couldn't load image from
/usr/share/vlc/vlc.xpm

menu-file of vlc is /usr/share/menu/vlc and it looks like this:

?package(vlc):command=/usr/bin/qvlc hotkey=V needs=X11 \
  section=Applications/Video title=VLC media player \
  icon=/usr/share/vlc/vlc.xpm hints=Video

In reality that file called /usr/share/vlc/vlc.xpm do not exist. And
packages.debian.org can not find any package that has that file in
that directory. If I give command locate vlc.xpm, it finds these:

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/vlc.xpm
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/vlc.xpm

Bug#399292: mplayer: MPlayer rc1 can't be properly scaled by WM on start

2010-08-05 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Hi Arren,

I'm in the process of cleaning up old bugreports. This is a really old
one, and I need to apologize for not coming to this earlier.

On Sat, Nov 18, 2006 at 20:52:18 (EST), Arren Lex wrote:

 I have my window manager (kwin) set up to automatically maximise
 mplayer-xv windows. This worked great up to mplayer1.0pre8. I
 installed mplayer-rc1 and now the resizing doesn't work -- the window
 snaps back to the movie size. What might have caused this? I can still
 resize the window manually afterward.

 I should add that mplayer with other video drivers (gl, gl2, x11..)
 always had this problem: the windows snapped back to movie size. Xv
 was the only one that worked, until recently.

 /proc/cpuinfo lists 'sse', 'mmx', and '3dnow' in the flags; don't know
 if that's relevant. Using open-source radeon driver.

 P.S. no, I don't want to use fullscreen instead. I like having a
 taskbar visible, and the ability to resize the window at need. It's
 not nearly as convenient.

Does adding -zoom help here? From the manpage:

-zoom
Allow software scaling, where available. This will allow
scaling with output drivers (like x11, fbdev) that do not sup-
port hardware scaling where MPlayer disables scaling by default
for performance reasons.

That should fix it for all drivers but xv. If this problem is only with
xv, then this needs to be fixed in the radeon drivers.

Hi!

At least on my update-to-date amd64 Debian unstable system, vocproc
cannot be loaded.

I noticed that it's not working as an ardour plugin and hence tried to
start it in lv2rack, but it won't show up.

At least we have a decent error message:

Bug#442181: playing video with -vo xvidix using radeon 9200 almost always shows green screen

Hi there,

I'm in the process of cleaning up old bugreports. This is a really old
one, and I need to apologize for not coming to this earlier.

 For a long time I've used mplayer's xvidix output, which has never had
 a problem playing videos with my dedicated Radeon 9200. Recently
 mplayer's behavior has been to show only a green screen until a lot of
 seemingly random alt-tabbing, pausing, rewinding, and so forth on my
 part gets the video to finally show up. Sometimes, portions of the
 video show up on the left, and the rest is a stripe of green, but
 usually it's the whole window. It may be due to upgrading Xorg but I'm
 not sure since mplayer is the only program I use that has it.

Does this still happen with current lenny or squeeze? I have to admit
that I have no idea about vidix other than it needs special
hardware. I'm therefore tagging this bug 'help'.

 Can you please retry on schroeder? -11 indicates a segmentation fault,

I believe this has to be asked on debian-sp...@buildd.debian.org.

Dear buildd maintainers, could you retry csound on schroeder?

Nope, but it can be retried until the appropriate buildd picks

That's a porter list.

 Nope, this should be sp...@buildd.debian.org

Indeed, that's buildd admin(s).

Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc3+svn20090405-1
Severity: normal

Since a recent update, subtitles in mplayer do not work anymore.
When I try to play a movie with subtitles (wether with autodetected subtitles
or explicitly set with -sub), they don't show up anymore, with the following
message :

New_Face failed. Maybe the font path is wrong.
Please supply the text font file (~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf).
subtitle font: load_sub_face failed.

Furthermore, their are no more time or any text displayed when asking for
playing time progress for example (with the 'o' key).

Searching on the web, a lot of people suggest providing a font with the above
name, but mplayer used to work for a long time without this. It should use the
'default' font of the system, or anything that suits it.

It would be helpful if there was some documentation included on how to build the
unstripped ffmpeg libraries.

I read a note found in bug #508524, but it was not entirely correct, at least
for version 0.svn20080303. The correct steps I found were,

$ apt-get build-dep ffmpeg-debian
$ apt-get source ffmpeg-debian
$ cd ffmpeg-debian_0.svn20090303
$ fakeroot debian/rules get-orig-source
$ sed -i '1s/ffmpeg-debian/ffmpeg/' debian/changelog
$ fakeroot debian/rules debian/control
$ cd ..
$ tar xzf ffmpeg_0.svn20090303.orig.tar.gz
$ cd ffmpeg
$ cp -r ../ffmpeg-debian_0.svn20090303/debian .
$ {debuild,dpkg-buildpackage} args ...

I'm trying the Lenny and I have found that ffmpeg, in attemp to encode a
file, claims an error:

Unknown encoder 'mpeg4'

Similar with mpeg2video, h264 etc. These worked well with etch. A quick
glance has shown that there has been similar problem with ubuntu recently
(Bug 254201). Is it going to be fixed until stable release of Lenny? This
renders the Lenny quite useless for me.

Alioth.

I absolutely share and appreciate your opinion with regard to Debian
and its derivatives.

If you consider it more important than have me do tidying for that
particular package, then sure - go ahead...

But I must say that I disapprove this We play my rules or else...
attitude (which reminds me a bit of the to-CDBS-or-not-to-CDBS
discussion we had some weeks ago),

Yeah, they are similar in approach: I am very well aware that I have
strong opinions on tight packaging while not wanting to impose those on
others, so I make it clear what are my strong opinions but at the same
time make it clear that if those are not sane to adopt as general
principles for the team then I will simply go out of the way of the
common team style of packaging.

That honestly is not meant as a threat. It is meant as an offer to not
have long tedious discussions about minor (to others than me) issues.

...but sure it might be experienced as such anyway. Imagine if I were
vegan and you were food lovers, and I wanted to hang out with you. I
would then leave the party every time the menu was meat (or mostly meat
with the non-meat part not very interesting), and even though not meant
as a thread or wanting to turn you all into vegans, it might still be
felt a bit like that that I only want to hang out with you those times
you happen to eat the kind of food that I enjoy too.

because I believe this is not how team maintenance works. You are
perfectly right and ubuntuisms should be maintained in a separate
branch, but c'mon, this is about 10 bytes in a Recommends field. Please
don't be so stubborn. ;)

Size in not important to me. Principle of drawing a line is important.

I can elaborate on why, if you insist, but if not I will refrain from
doing so to help avoid stirring a long tedious discussion about an issue
which I suspect is considered minor to most in this team.

For this concrete issue, I have now learned that it really is not
trivial to Ubuntu to build from a different Alioth branch, as I thought.
So I will have a look at using the vendor tag approach.

I do *not* want to harrass or punish Ubuntu for needing different
packaging than Debian. I just want to draw a clear line on what is
Debian and what is derived.

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

 Well then the package is broken, or some message saying what to try next
 should be given.

 The reason may be documented in /usr/share/doc/ffmpeg/README.Debian.gz
 but it is very hard to tell.

the correct fix is to fix the debian packages.

 OK, probably the message should be **codec disabled for legal reasons by
 Debian.
 Try putting debian-multimedia... on top of your /etc/apt/sources.list... and
 do apt-get update, then reinstall their version of this package**

I cannot recommend that repository.

btw, we are currently working on getting the lame package in main. once
it is there, I'll enable mp3 support

 P.S., does this really turn 8 kb/s into 64 kb/s? Is that a good thing to do?

 Well I tried -ab 8k and found out that the Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 22050 Hz,
 2 channels, s16, 8 kb/s
 must be wrong. ffprobe gives the same wrong answer.

I don't follow. I'd need example files and full output to comment on
that. BTW, best file the bug upstream: http://ffmpeg.org/bugreports.html

 P.S.S., the man page,

-ac channels
Set the number of audio channels (default = 1).

 is wrong. As you see above two channels were the output, even without
 this option.

I think this was recently fixed upstream, not sure if it made it for
0.6, but will definitly be fixed in 0.7

Bug#591832: mplayer: hangs on playing ogv (vp3) video with Invalid frame duration value

2010-08-05 Thread Helmut Grohne
Package: mplayer
Version: 2:1.0~rc3++final.dfsg1-1
Severity: normal

The video I tried is located at
http://www.joachim-breitner.de.nyud.net/various/ipatch-demo.ogv.
sha1 hash is 33ca95d06124cb2b2be0f6e9e191ad3016716cde.

Playing with mplayer is fine for some time, but hangs later. The
following output messages was emitted immediately before the hang:

Invalid frame duration value (65.600/0.000 = -65.600). Defaulting to 0.067 sec.

mplayer did not react to key presses and did no redraws anymore.

Is this reproducible at all?

Helmut

Checking for NULL after dereferencing makes no sense, even if the
dereferencing is inside an assert.
Apart from that, pt and child are not _input_ data, they are
MPlayer-internal data, it is very likely the validation
should happen far earlier.

 Checking for NULL after dereferencing makes no sense, even if the
 dereferencing is inside an assert.

Good catch, this part needs to be moved before the #ifdef and the
assert removed. If you like, find attached a revised version.

 Apart from that, pt and child are not _input_ data, they are
 MPlayer-internal data, it is very likely the validation
 should happen far earlier.

Depends. There are two calls to play_tree_set_child in playtreeparser.c.
Of course, you could check for non-NULL pointers before calling them.
Twice the code.

Either one should work.

new packages: libraries for the 'puredata' package

2010-08-05 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

So I've been maintaining a set of packages outside of Debian for a whole
bunch of libraries for the Pd (aka Pure Data) programming langauge. Its
been in Debian for a long time in the 'puredata' package. I've talked
with pabs, siretart and perhaps others at DebConf about them, and I
think it makes sense to have them as part of the pkg-multimedia team.

I also want to become a DM, and working with pkg-multimedia as well as
these packages will hopefully serve to fulfill that process. I've filed
ITPs on them, and will start uploading them to mentors.debian.net (they
are already on Launchpad).

https://launchpad.net/~eighthave/+archive/libdirs/+packages

The ITPs in question are all the ITP packages starting with pd- (FYI:
the 'puredata' package provides 'pd', and there are other variants of
Pure Data which also provide 'pd', but aren't in Debian yet. That's why
the libraries start with pd-):

http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/being_packaged

I am thinking the next step is to take one package all the way thru the
mentors.debian.net process and get that all smoothed out, then work on
the rest.

Hmm, this is weird. Csound used to build just fine. Looks like:

1. Scons is broken (unlikely to cause a glibc error, it's a pyhton
script), or
2. Python is broken, or
3. Host/kernel/libc are broken.

Sparc people, any ideas on how to proceed to debug this?

 + /* Roughly validate input data. Both, pt and child are going to be
 + * dereferenced, hence assure they're not NULL.
 +   */
 +  if (NULL == pt || NULL == child) {
 +  return;
 +  }
 +
//DEBUG_FF: Where are the children freed?
// Attention in using this function!
for(iter = pt-child ; iter != NULL ; iter = iter-next)

 Think I replied to the wrong place first: I think this is the wrong
 place, at least it must be before the asserts.

I've analyzed the stacktrace more, and I think there is a bug in
parse_pls() in playtreeparser.c. In case there is no (valid) entry, the
for loop in line 344 is executed 0 times. This leads to leaving the
variable 'list' to '0', which in turn causes the crash. For this reason,
I'm proposing this patch:

Index: playtreeparser.c
===
--- playtreeparser.c(revision 31930)
+++ playtreeparser.c(working copy)
@@ -368,6 +368,7 @@
   free(entries);

   entry = play_tree_new();
+  if (list)
   play_tree_set_child(entry,list);
   return entry;
 }

However, I still think Adrians Patch isn't bad and in this case would
have had the exact same behavior. If perhaps other parsers have a
similar problems, Adi's patch would be more safe.

So which one of the two patches do you prefer?

Awesome.

I also want to become a DM, and working with pkg-multimedia

Even more awesome! :-)

I am thinking the next step is to take one package all the way thru the
mentors.debian.net process and get that all smoothed out, then work on
the rest.

Just join our team.

The Debian sponsoring/mentoring system is for lonely riders, not teams.

In other words: You need no mentor or sponsoring when working with us.

Are you already subscribed to this mailinglist? Can I drop you as

 Hmm, this is weird. Csound used to build just fine. Looks like:

I took the freedom and successfully built the package on my sparc
machine inside pbuilder. Everything went smoothly, right from the
beginning.

If interested, grab the package here:

   http://cluster.inf-ra.uni-jena.de/~adi/sparc/

It's signed with my key, one might want to resign it and upload the
sparc architecture files only.
