liboss4-salsa*: please add six snd_{midi,seq}_* functions

2018-04-12 Thread Thorsten Glaser
retitle 870787 liboss4-salsa*: please add six snd_{midi,seq}_* functions
affects 870787 src:portmidi
thanks

Hello again,

we also need the following symbols in oss-salsa:

• snd_midi_event_encode_byte
• snd_midi_event_free
• snd_midi_event_new
• snd_seq_delete_port
• snd_seq_disconnect_from

These are required to build src:portmidi, which is a new
dependency of src:musescore, and thus extending the scope
of this bugreport instead of creating a new one. Just to
remind, we also need this:

• snd_seq_event_length

Please d̲o̲ provide this!

Small side note: perhaps, given enough functions in oss-salsa,
portaudio19 could also use it, achieving feature parity. (Which
is why I Cc’d its maintainers as well.)

Thanks in advance,

No, first and foremost because we don't do this in sid/testing,
but also because fluidr3mono isn't going to go away.

While musescore-general is a fork off it, fluidr3mono will
still have its use cases, especially as the former is expected
to kinda explode in size, so users of systems with less RAM
will need to use the latter.

I was more thinking of "we don't really need to backport this"
but turns out we do, but it's not a problem (more of a consideration
of mirror space and laziness). But thanks anyway.

Anyway, fluidr3mono is now in backports-NEW too.

MuseScore (and soundfonts) backporting plans

2018-04-04 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi everyone (especially Fabian and Toddy),

now that MuseScore 2.2.1 has entered unstable, I would like to
share my plans for how to deal with backports.

musescore-sftools (needed to compile soundfonts) is currently
in backports-NEW for stretch-backports.

fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont is in good and usable shape in testing,
but not currently in backports; stretch-backports *unfortunately*
ships a version in where it is built by src:musescore.

musescore-general-soundfont is currently in NEW.

My plans for stretch-backports are as follows:

once musescore-sftools is in stretch-backports and musescore-general-soundfont
in testing, I’d like to backport musescore-general-soundfont and musescore.

I had not planned to backport fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont also, but given that
it already entered stretch-backports by means of src:musescore there might
be demand for the binary package to not vanish. Perhaps I should just upload
it right now so it can enter backports-NEW already…

… benefit of that is: the new musescore backport would not need backports-NEW
but the soundfonts would; fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont could be uploaded already.

For jessie-backports-sloppy, things are *much* more tricky due to the
too-old Qt5 it has. I am still pondering and seeing whether it will
be possible at all.

JFYI,

Bug#871920: musescore-common: please split out the FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3 sound font into a separate package

2018-03-14 Thread Thorsten Glaser
tl;dr: I’m working on *all* MuseScore soundfont issues.

Hi Fabian,

turns out I was right and it happened.

First, I realised that SF3 cannot be “source” because it’s
compressed using a lossy algorithm, which is why I packaged
the soundfont separately. (As a side effect, I raised the
Vorbis quality of the SF3 in Debian a bit because of user
reports of audible artefacts in the one shipped by MuseScore.)

Second, as of today, MuseScore 2.2 and up will use their new
soundfont MS_General, although FluidR3Mono_GM v3.212 is con‐
sidered identical to MS_General v0.0. (They fucked up though
and don’t have the SF2 for v3.212 so we’ll just stick to the
v3.215 I already uploaded.)

I will now do the following:

• make fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont ship a symlink
  MS_General.sf3@ -> FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3
• make the upcoming uploads of musescore depend on a high
enough version of fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont as alternative
  to the MS_General soundfont
• package MS_General separately once it reaches a stable release
(it’s currently being issued as alpha test versions)
• keep fluidr3mono-gm-soundfont in the archive
• continue advising the MuseScore team upstream about
legal issues (I’ve already reached some successes with that)

In short: I’m on it and have everything I need.

bye,
//mirabilos

2018-03-04 Thread Thorsten Glaser
retitle 842926 musescore: Segment violation when Musescore opens with wizard
(start center) active
thanks

Hi,

does this still occur?

If so, I have a hunch that this will be fixed
in 2.2~pre20180302+dfsg1-1 (which will be uploaded
after ftpmaster process the other two NEW packages).

If not, please close the bug ;-)

Thanks,

Please see https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/3498 [1] which removes

Bug#884138: ffmpeg: scientific notation used for speed in progress bar

2017-12-12 Thread Thorsten Glaser
James Cowgill dixit:

>I guess you want to change it to "%5.4gx" or something else? The point
>where we change from normal to scientific notation is fairly arbitrary.

I guess I'd expect to never see scientific notation for
speed/progress indicators (the numbers switch very quickly,
and length is an easy indication of change).

rsync recently changed their formatting to include
thousands separators for their speed and size indicators
(which, of course, broke piping the output into sed,
easy to fix by putting a "| tr -d ," before it).

I'm not sure this would improve the situation here
(to use a custom formatting routine with thousands
separators, instead of printf) or not. I'd say that
that is upstream's call.

Bug#884138: ffmpeg: scientific notation used for speed in progress bar

2017-12-11 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Package: ffmpeg
Version: 7:3.4-4+b2
Severity: wishlist

size=   71457kB time=01:10:25.91 bitrate= 138.5kbits/s speed=1.4e+03x

I guess my computer is just too fast for that task ☺ Command was:
for x in *.mp4; do ffmpeg -i "$x" -vn -sn -c:a copy ./"${x%.mp4}.wma"; done
So basically just switching containers (WMA is the only one that is
streamable by “ssh otherbox cat foo | mplayer -”, neither M4A nor
MPEG-TS are) and ditching all but the audio track.

I see what you mean. This is a part from the previous package
I did not change, and I guess the previous packager just added
the licence bodies from OSI or so.

Is this a problem? I don’t normally use DEP-5 myself; what’s
recommended there? I can include any suggested improvements
in the next upload then.

Thank you for pointing this out,

Yes, as you argued later on in your eMail.

They could switch to a different one, is what I meant.

No, I got a .dsc from Toby way before it entered Debian, which worked
with only the most minor tweaks (it *was* intended for his PPA), and
the soundfont slowed getting it uploaded to Debian by quite a bit.

I hope I’ll be able to speed things up in the future now, though. I
was a new to-be-a-user-soon back then only learning of its existence
by a workshop a fellow choir member gave.

Bug#871920: musescore-common: please split out the FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3 sound font into a separate package

2017-10-09 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi Fabian,

> in the SF3 format that musescore introduced. It is thus appropriate to
> split out the FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3 sound font that comes bundled with
> musescore into its own package, install it into /usr/share/sounds/sf3/

as far as I’m informed, the soundfont is not an “API” of MuseScore,
i.e. it can, and possibly will, change without notice.

Sure, we can split it off, and it’ll be versioned with the version
of the corresponding MuseScore package, but that’ll be all of it,
unless someone actively maintains the soundfont.

Furthermore, MuseScore may cease shipping this, or ship an
incompatible version, in the future. I *really* wish to avoid
a repeat of #768524 where we could not upgrade MuseScore because
something used the old soundfont.

So, what’s it going to be?

I guess this is really a question to the entire team, to which
I’m new, because I’m trying to get more involved with MuseScore,
having that is, obviously, my priority (mostly because I use it
and might be able to help them fix some bugs).

If nobody else cares, I’d put this as WONTFIX.

If Fabian insists, but nobody else cares, I’d be willing enough
to split the package off but with absolutely no guarantees of
it not going away (although probably with a grace period in which
the new version would sit in experimental, so downstream packages’
maintainers could adjust).

If anyone cares about it and would maintain the soundfont split
off if necessary, do share.

bye,

Hi Fabian,

>if you had to go through NEW anyway, why didn't you consider to

I think you’re confused ;-)

This is backports-NEW, not unstable-NEW. I uploaded 2.1 to
stretch-backports as discussed in the MuseScore IRC channel,
and tvaz agreed I can comaintain this.

>separate the SF3 soundfont out into a separate package as I requested
>in #871920?

Because that’s something that can only be done in an update
in sid or experimental. (I’d also have to research a few things
for that, given that I’m new at MuseScore maintenance, and my
focus is a number of bugfixes at the moment, asides from ensuring
our users get updates in reasonable time so upstream can cease
endorsing AppStream images.)

Yes, it is, thanks. I fought with that while packaging 2.1,
which is in experimental.

We’ll likely upload 2.1 to unstable RSN. I am still waiting
on user feedback, and feedback from the proper maintainers
(so I maybe can make it a Team Upload instead of NMU), but
I can do it this week.

Bug#861776: musescore: version 2.1 released

2017-05-03 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Source: musescore
Severity: normal

Hi,

as I already pointed out to tvaz in IRC (no idea if Toby is in IRC):
MuseScore 2.1 got released recently, and having it in experimental
would be great (not in unstable due to the freeze), especially as
they managed to make the data format compatible in both directions
(with a select very few exceptions), meaning downgrades don’t lose
users’ data.

I could help, too. While I don’t really speak C++ nor have much Qt
experience, I know my packaging, and I’ve been wanting to get more
involved with MuseScore anyway, so if you wish for me to try to
prepare an updated package or even upload it to experimental, just
tell me.

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

the version in the packaging repository allegedly fixes the
problem with the new Qt version. If it works as-is, can an
NMU be done to get people able to dist-upgrade their sid
systems at least, even if the version in the packaging git
is UNRELEASED?

I’m considering building it as 2.0.3+dfsg1-0.1 locally (on
x32) and testing that it at least works for basic functions,
but I need a willing sponsor. Otherwise, if someone else
does it, that’d be just fine with me as well.

Bug#797169: mjpegtools: FTBFS with x32 because of unused SIMD code remains

2015-08-28 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Source: mjpegtools
Version: 1:2.1.0+debian-3
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hi,

your package configures with --disable-simd-accel but the upstream
code fails to fully disable all related functions, leading to some
asm code still being compiled, which fails on x32 due to its model.

The attached patch fully disables the (unused anyway!) code making
it buildable on x32. I tested on i386, where it still builds, too.

Please apply and forward upstream. Thanks!

mplayer on x32: working❣

2015-07-27 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi everyone,

I just installed mplayer on my Debian/x32 desktop and can
confirm it’s working fine. Thanks a lot for bringing it back!

Some observations:

• the default -ao alsa does not work because it uses an ioctl
that appears to be broken on x32 (and possibly some MIPS
variants), as ioctls are not yet triarch’d (fallback to
  -ao sdl:aalib also fails)

  ⇒ fix:
tglase@tglase:~ $ cat .mplayer/config
ao=oss

  This works perfectly.

Can we address this somehow on the userland side until the
kernel is fixed? Maybe make OSS default on x32 or, better,
adding OSS as fallback to try when ALSA fails?

• there were some performance concerns because we disabled
asm code in many codecs on x32; I just displayed a 480x360
MP4 youtube video, either in window or on 1280x1024 fullscreen,
with about 5% constant CPU usage (AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor
at 3.4 GHz), which I think is okay

Bug#793754: libass: FTBFS on x32 because it tries to use amd64-specific asm

2015-07-27 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Source: libass
Version: 0.12.3-1
Severity: important
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the past)

Recent versions of libass install yasm on [any-amd64], which is an
architecture wildcard that does include x32 (because it matches on
the CPU architecture, not the Debian architecture, which surprised
me initially too).

The attached patch fixes libass by expanding the wildcard to those
desired [amd64 kfreebsd-amd64] and - just to be sure - adds an ex-
plicit Build-Conflicts on yasm [x32] (passing --disable-asm to the
configure invocation would probably also work).

Please apply!

Bug#792272: x265: FTBFS on x32

2015-07-19 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Sebastian Ramacher dixit:

If you want to port the asm code to x32, please submit your work upstream. I
don't intend to carry patches for the asm code in a package where the asm code
changes a lot with every release:

OK, completely understandable.

But, for now, just getting x265 compiled on x32 withOUT asm is the goal.

Bug#752103: using build profiles breaks debian-ports

2015-07-17 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi *,

using build profiles breaks debian-ports architectures, all of them:

http://buildd.debian-ports.org/status/package.php?p=x264

│Dependency installability problem for [33]x264 on alpha, hppa, m68k, sh4,
sparc64 and x32:
│
│x264 build-depends on missing:
│- empty-dependency-after-parsing

wdiff shows:

Build-Depends: […] libgpac-dev (= ⌦0.5.0+svn4288~),⌫ ▶0.5.0+svn4288~)
!stage1,◀ […]

So this means that because someone added the build profiles thing,
wanna-build (or something else in the component stack) on dpo can
no longer calculate B-D installability for those packages, which
sorta defeats the purpose of adding it.

2015-06-11 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Source: libffado
Version: 2.2.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #778777

Hi,

I just wondered about this and forgot to see beforehand whether a
bugreport already existed, so my patch differs. It’s shorter, less
intrusive and more in the spirit of the original code though, I
think, so I’m attaching it.

I’ve built this and uploaded it to unreleased, so please apply and
forward upstream.

Re: antlr3 on slow machines

2015-02-24 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Emmanuel Bourg dixit:

This issue only affects non arch all packages depending on antlr, I
don't think there are many of them and fixing the issue with an extra
command line parameter is trivial.

Hmm.

udd= SELECT source, version, architecture FROM sources WHERE release='sid' AND
build_depends LIKE '%antlr3%';
source |version| architecture
---+---+--
 sqljet| 1.1.10-1 | all
 openjfx | 8u20-b26-3| any all
 netbeans | 7.0.1+dfsg1-5 | all
 logol | 1.7.0-2 | any all
 logol | 1.6.9-3 | any all
 libnb-platform18-java | 7.4+dfsg1-2 | all
 herold| 6.1.0-1 | all
 forked-daapd | 22.0-2| any
 forked-daapd | 22.0-1| any
 eclipselink | 2.5.1-2 | all
 belle-sip | 1.3.0-1.1 | any
(11 rows)

Unsure if the query is really “enough” (IMHO B-D should be
split off into their own table so we can do exact package
name matches), but if it is, and if the “architecture”
column is what I think it is, we have:

• openjfx
• logol
• forked-daapd
• belle-sip

That’s indeed not much for the respective maintainers to fix.

Debian-Multimedia, can you do that for your packages, so we
see whether the fix indeed works?

Thanks,

patch for x32 for libpostproc

2014-09-03 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi *,

please see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.ffmpeg.devel/182554
for a patch I forwarded upstream, which allows us to build libpostproc
on Debian/x32.

As I said there, we’ll need to run-time test the built package, but at
least we got strigi ⇒ subversion ⇒ git building again (which was the
higher goal at the moment).

If there’s a standalone test for libpostproc, please point me to it,
so I can test it.

debdiff against:
http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian-ports/20140903T014453Z/pool-x32/main/libp/libpostproc/libpostproc_0.git20120821-4+x32.1.dsc

Hm, there’s a powerpcspe patch too…

Oh, and: s/upsream/upstream/ in debian/control.

Re: Reintroducing FFmpeg to Debian

2014-07-28 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Andreas Cadhalpun wrote:

  * Do you intend to replace Libav by FFmpeg in Debian?
No, there is no need to replace anything as long as it is maintained.
Currently the main goal is to give multimedia maintainers a choice
between the two sets of libraries to link against, and our users the
choice to use the 'ffmpeg' utility. That is possible, because the
packages are co-installable. (Only the *-dev packages conflict.)

Hm, I wonder if this will work, see the JPEG discussion.

But I'd *love* to see ffmpeg replace libav and to get
my mplayer back, which is currently on hold.

IOhannes zmölnig dixit:

Well, your puredata is from before stable... With the current build

as a matter of fact, i'm not entirely sure about this.

Mh. I’m just building to catch up, m68k had five thousand and then
some packages in Needs-Build one month ago (less than 2800 right
now). Then, those versioned Build-Depends are really helpful, as,
which is in my eyes a bug, wanna-build does not order the queue
by B-D actuality for such cases (at all), as long as a dependency
exists and is installable.

configure is supposed to check both the new and the old header, but
unfortunately stops checking after the check for the new header location
 failed
(due to the upstream bug i mentioned).

Mh. Then either fix that or bump the B-D version ;-)

So I did in fact spot a problem with it. Well, it’s no longer a
problem for me, as I mentioned that I just built the other package
first, but glad to be useful ;-)

pd-zexy: broken Build-Depends

2013-01-17 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi,

pd-zexy has alternative Build-Depends, however, they don’t work:

[…]
 pbuilder-satisfydepends-dummy : Depends: puredata-core which is a virtual
package. or
puredata ( 0.43) but it is not going
to be installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

  Install the following packages:
[…]
8) puredata [0.41.4-1 (unstable)]
[…]
checking pd/m_pd.h usability... no
checking pd/m_pd.h presence... no
checking for pd/m_pd.h... no
configure: error: m_pd.h is desperately needed!
install pd and/or use
--with-pd=/path/to/pd/
make: *** [debian/stamp-autotools] Error 1
dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build-arch gave error exit status 2

I think dropping the alternative on puredata is way to go.
I’ll just build its newer version, but due to the existence
of the alternative B-D, wanna-build considers pd-zexy to be
eligible for building.

Hmh. Strictly speaking, you need to version the B-D then.

I'm not sure complicating the build-depends line for oldstable is worthwile.

By policy, you’d normally have to, but since this is an
easily solved one-time issue, I refrain from calling it ;)
But maybe in the future, keep things like this in mind,
or something.

I think you should just remove the current version of puredata from
m68k in the meanwhile (all rbuilddeps are likely to fail).

Actually, I just built puredata, and in the meanwhile,
pd-zexy also built. I just wanted to inform you of it.

So, nothing that “must” be done any more, from my PoV,
just an informative posting.

This is a known problem with ia32-libs. Don't use it, use multiarch

Hm, this doesn’t work for stuff that directly depends on ia32-libs.
But I guess it would be best for ia32-libs to use an alternative
dependency here. (Still, why do these two conflict with each other?
That was why waldi suggested to me to report that.)

Bug#680225: libjack-jackd2-0 conflicts with libjack0

2012-07-04 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Package: libjack-jackd2-0
Severity: important
Justification: release goal Multi-Arch

Hi,

libjack-jackd2-0 conflicts with libjack0, which is a bit
unfortunate, as some things depend on either; waldi suggested
to either take over the binary package if it’s the same lib,
or use a different library name / ABI name and not conflict.

ia32-libs wants libjack0

gstreamer0.10-plugins-good wants libjack-jackd2-0
and is wanted by opera at least (on a coworker’s PC)

Regarding '--diffstat', although diffstat's histograms actually introduce
unnecessary rubbish with small patches, I find those headers showing
statistics very handy when reviewing large patches involving multiple files.

Like I said, that’s probably a personal preference that should be
talked about inside the team. I’ll crawl back under my stone now
that I’ve got a bootstrap-libav on my Atari VMs…

So, I'd suggest adding '--diffstat' only to patchset worthing it and avoid it
when dealing with small, minimalistic or single file patches.

If that can be done, sure. Maybe quilt can be patched to get
parameters like --diffstat-if-exists and --diffstat-if-at-least=$number
to support that workflow. I’ll leave it to you all.

Very good, I suppose we can adopt it as is and I think we don't need any
kind of licensing, a small Originally written by note is enough, isn't it?

Actually, this was originally written by the people on this list,
the Maintainer’s Guide and the Perl people. I just put it together
and used the ingenious while-not-as-a-loop construct to make it
legible. So just take it and do what you want ☺ my benefit is that
I’ve now also got a .quiltrc; I’m relatively new to this tool. (And
it needs to get ported to MirBSD and then, maybe, bashisms removed.)

Alessio Treglia dixit:

Hi all,

Ciao Alessio ;-) and greetings from your favourite croatian restaurant ☺

good idea, Fabian!

I also found the ideas and thread upon which I happened by accident
intriguing but the official implementation scary (considering I write
a shell, not surprising) and did it more cleanly.

I'd like to add --diffstat and --strip-trailing-whitespace to
QUILT_REFRESH_ARGS and set QUILT_DIFF_OPTS=--show-c-function. I find
the latter and --diffstat particularly helpful.

I’ve not added --diffstat to mine out of personal preference, I found
them to be spam and uninteresting, but you can clear that within your
team. I’ve also not added --strip-trailing-whitespace because the docs
didn’t make it clear whether it strips trailing whitespace only in the
rest of the file (good!) or also in the patched files’ “+” parts which,
while I’d prefer it, is actually harmful (there are files that require
trailing whitespace in their syntax, and I’d rather not break those by
accident; while they are few, debugging this is usually a real PITA).

I’ve attached the ~/.quiltrc file resulting from this thread, the Perl
and Maintainer’s Guide suggestions, in “clean” POSIX shell (nothing
that requires any bashisms, dashisms or Korn Shell features in there,
although I hard-coded /bin/readlink for Debian where this path is part
of the Essential coreutils, because some shells might have a readlink
builtin that doesn’t implement the ‘-e’ GNU extension). QUILT_PATCHES
ought to be an absolute path IMHO but this is what we got.

This ~/.quiltrc file does not contain enough copyrightable work to
fall under copyright law and thus does not need a copyright licence,
but if you’d prefer one, take any licence that has ever been OSI
approved.

 general.

Yes.

Thorsten, that's three circular build-dependencies. Which one is the fourth
 one
that you mentioned in your report?

frei0r, via some corners, too.

Anyway, all of these codecs are optional. So if you comment out the B-Ds on
 libx264-dev, libopencv-dev and libcv-dev in debian/control and remove the
--enable-libopencv line in debian/confflags, libav should build just fine
 and
be available for bootstrapping of other packages.

OK, thanks. That’s what I figured, but you know the build system
best, and asking rarely hurts.

Reinhard Tartler dixit:

Well, I take that as another reason to use the cond_enable macro in
debian/confflags for these libraries, because this way you do not even
have to edit any file, but can just bootstrap with 'dpkg-buildpackage
-d -b'.

That would be really cool. On the other hand, that may introduce
subtle breakage in normal operation, so many packages protect
something like that by using DEB_STAGE (if it’s set, gcc even has
DEB_STAGE=stage{1,2} checks as it needs them, then the relaxed
rules apply, otherwise the dependencies are strictly enforced).

Fabian Greffrath dixit:

Maybe we should leave a note in README.Debian or README.source stating that
there are known circular build-dependencies that complicate bootstrapping, but
that the affected codecs are strictly optional to libav and the circles could
get forced open by simply leaving them out of libav's Build-Depends.

And that would dot the i ;-)

Bootstrapping libav on a new architecture

2012-06-18 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Hi,

m68k currently has no libpostproc-dev and friends, built from src:libav.
How do you recommend to bootstrap this, considering several (at least
four) build dependencies of libav, all codecs or something like that,
build-depend on libav’s binaries again? Can libav be built without any
of those plugins at first, to get the B-D of the full libav (as shipped
in Debian sid/main) built?

Thanks in advance,
