XMPP is generally better, since it has been around for about 20 years and so is
a lot more solid (fewer bugs, more (lightweight) clients, etc.). Matrix is
only 5 years old and so has fewer clients and bridges available.

> Nick, for XMPP (with OMEMO) on iOS you can use https://chatsecure.org/

I would currently recommend against ChatSecure since their OMEMO support is
incomplete (see https://omemo.top/ for details) and their client has some other
serious issues that have been open for multiple years, such as
https://github.com/ChatSecure/ChatSecure-iOS/issues/844 .

My personal suggestion would be Siskin IM, since it has complete OMEMO support
and does not suffer from bugs like the one for ChatSecure above. You can find
out more here:

  https://siskin.im/

I don't have any particular relation to either project, except that I run a
service which uses XMPP, so I have interacted with these projects more than
most.

I did not know about that. Can you elaborate? I
was told the pinephone
can start on free software, though if you want the
modem and the
wifi to work then non free software is required.
Else I would not
have directed replicant to the pinephone.
Has replicant rejected the pinephone?

depends how simple the hardware is. We could write free firmware if
there is no signature checking.

I also mentioned the non-free firmware for WIFI, but I tell him that the
display firmware would make a port of Replicant to it impossible.

Hi Andrés,

Could you also let him know about the problem with the non-free firmware
for the WiFi chip? Perhaps, on a later version of the phone, they can do
something similar to what Purism did with the firmware for the RAM
controller: load the firmware from a separate flash chip, which would
not require the main CPU (Replicant) to handle it.

Regards,
David

I have been in contact with Lukasz. He said that the September batch had
been already allocated, so that they could arrange for a unit to be shipped
to us in either late October or November. I have already talked with him
about the problem that would be for Replicant a display that requires
uploading a non-free blob.

Ho Joonas,
I am not sure where you want to integrate this description but I give a shot:
---
Offline Calendar is an app allowing to create several calendars without needing
networ under GPLv3 license.
