libavcodec is more or less the default codec of mencoder, which is the
encoding-brother of mplayer. so, this is pretty standard - i think
your download has a problem or your mplayer version is crippled (no
installed/activiated modules).

It worked fine for me --kubuntu 7.10, automatically ran the mplayer
plugin for mozilla firefox.  Nice to have a system which just works!

I used mplayer on Gentoo to view the video and this is the codec it is using:

Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)

I think the decoder can be obtained here:

Unfortunately, QuickTime is not forthcoming with information needed  
to figure it out (maybe because the actual format embedded in the  
container format is not easy for it to figure out; just a guess).

By accident, I discovered that Chroma will play this one (check the  
download page on Apple's website).
