[sane-devel] Using an Officejet 7310 with its ethernet connection?
Is there any way to use my officejet 7310 with sane as a driver. The officejet is connected via its ethernet port, so it is not directly connected via USB. I have seen references to the HPOJ backend and to the jetdirect system. I am using the HP jetdirect interface for printing without problems, but scanning is a different issue. So far I tried to add the Officejet's IP address to net.conf, changed dll.conf to reference net, but otherwise I don't quite see what I can do to get sane to reach across the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sunil

According to the product specifications, this sounds like a REALLY nice AIO! However, it seems that it supports connecting to a USB port and that would probably be the best method. The only other scanners that I could find that have had a workaround for scanning via an ethernet connection to a SCSI generic device would be a section of the Sharp series. An article explaining the process along with links (and likely source code) can be found here: http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl5_sane-sharp.htm I'm not sure if this will work as HP != Sharp and so the code is likely to be different, but I would definately try hooking it up to the USB port first and get it working right there, and then trying the ethernet out. Good luck! I'm afraid that no scanner supported by the the sane-sharp backend provides any ethernet interface, neither does the backend its provide any networking support. But the backend can be used like every other Sane backend by the saned daemon and its counterpart, the net backend. Abel

Good luck! Thank you so much for the link and the information. I looked but did not see references to the method for accessing the sharp over the network. I'll keep digging about it. The USB route is an option, but one I'd rather not exercise. I like the idea of keeping the machine independently on the network and thus not having it rely upon a machine being up and running. Also, it is working great with the other options (i.e. printing) over the network. Frankly it also works great as a scanner with the HP supplied windows software. My concern is I'd rather use Sane than Twain and I'd rather use my favourite programs such as Xsane on both Windows and linux platforms. I've got to believe (and thought I saw someplace) references to other Officejets that are connected over a network and accessible in sane... Sunil
[sane-devel] Re: [hpoj-devel] Connecting to an HP Officejet 7310 over ethernet with sane and HPOJ
Install hpoj. Run #ptal-init setup. In there you can specify the ip address of your device. Also, be sure to uncomment #hpoj in /etc/sane/conf.dll Cory hp linux printing team Cory-- Fantastic-- thank you so much, looks like things are working like a charm! This is really a great product, and the fact it works with sane makes it that much better! Sunil
[sane-devel] hpoj officejet 7310 issue: using auto mode
Hi. (1) Wondering if there is any quick fix for a problem I am having or if it is in fact a bug: When setting auto mode in either Xsane or using scanimage with the hpoj backend for the 7310, I noticed that if I load a few sheets in the ADF the program correct understands there are pages coming from teh ADF. However, once the ADF is depleted, the scanner continues to keep communicating with sane and simply scanning continuously the flatbed instead. This is odd. I have tested the HP windows program on my WinXP machine, and this behavior is not exhibited. (2) How can you set the brightness and contrast using the hpoj backend? I have looked for both settings, but though I see a contrast setting, it indicates as being inactive? Again, I love the fact that the latest network officejets are supported by HPOJ and thus by sane. Really great stuff. Sunil
