i think the canon n650u lide scanner uses the plustek backend if it is of
  any use?

if i remove my webcam i just get 'no devices detected' but lsusb lists it.

[sane-devel] Canon LIDE 650U not recog. Fixed, but new problem

2009-06-29 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
hello i found out that i had forgot to log completely out after adding to
group scanner, scanimage -L worked as root

it works now

I apologize for wasting your time :)

I had the feeling it was something simple, hehe..

I did however try to chmod 777 /dev/usbdev* because i am not used to libusb :)

michael at mws:~% scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname Philips 740 webcam virtual device
device `plustek:libusb:001:038' is a Canon CanoScan N650U/N656U flatbed
scanner

unfortunately the scanner does not work (it used to with another kernel and
computer, with debian etch - now it is lenny)

the problem:
when scanning and the head is about to reposition itself after the scan
it makes some loud noise as though it is about to destroy itself (but the
scanner head is only at the border of the small 10x5cm document).
Sounds like the head moves in the wrong direction
(as though it tries to instruct it to move back while
it is moving forth)

the problem is reproducible if i try to scan before the head has repositioned
itself back after acquiring preview, then the scanner head stops and the scanner
makes a very loud noise as though it tries to move the scanner head forth
while it is being moved back into place.

will try to see if upgrading sane to testing or unstable fixes it, i hope so
(as the scanner has been working before with libusb).

2009-06-29 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
It might be a semidefect scanner

when it gets stuck i can only get it to move back if i shake it a bit, else it
just
keeps being stuck somewhere when i press scan before the head is in position.

if i wait patiently and never press scan before the head has come back to the
start it seems to work now.

so I guess the problem has solved itself, thanks for any help offered.

[sane-devel] vertical lines how can i help

2008-09-21 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
i posted earlier that i got vertical lines when scanning and not in windows
with canons driver on a canoscan n650u lide scanner.

how can i help debug this problem/ is there any windows software i can use to
get to what the windows driver is doing which sane apperently isnt

it seems to be compensating for bad optics in the scanner, it doesnt like
reflective images, it scans everything else ok.

thanks
Michael Ole Olsen

[sane-devel] vertical lines along image when scanning and not in windows

2008-09-17 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
i am using a canon canoscan lide 650u

i get vertical lines when scanning using xsane from debian etch, i also tried
never xsane (testing) without better results

the problem doesn't happen in windows with canons driver

http://shell2.eushells.com/~dh/naff.png

it is much more visible at higher dpi and resolutions, seems that you can see
the scanning cable and head-sliding pipe reflected in the image somehow.

i tried calibrating and all settings available in xsane, the problem doesn't
happen with my scanjet 6300c which is also usb.

any ideas what can be the cause?

if you need usb driver output from windows i can perhaps supply you with it(i
got vmware running)

thanks,

Michael Ole Olsen

[sane-devel] A few small problems with xsane

2008-04-19 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
I got 3 issues while using xsane with my HP Scanjet 6300C:
- Scanner button not working
- No lamp turn-off
- Scanner head moves forth/back while scanning and seems to be calibrating each
time before scan (delay before scan=5-8seconds)

I'm currently testing it on debian/testing.

I cannot get xsane to switch off the scanner lamp automatically, it only works
when you manually press the turn off lamp button in advanced settings for the
scanner.

if i just close xsane it never gets turned off, and im worried that it will
eventually overheat the scanner's CCD sensor or just reduce the lamp lifetime,
which isn't that long.

the only thing which seems to work is rmmod'ing the usb module or unplugging it.

also the scan buttons on the scanner doesn't work

what could be the issue?, I am using libusb and no scanner modules loaded/in
kernel.

I tried various backends and xsane versions (mostly etch and testing) with no
results.

also I am having problems with the scanner stopping while scanning, even on
lowest speeds for 175dpi and above.

is it not possible to set scan speed slower than Slow in advanced settings
dialog? i.e. set it manually using an integer value parameter to sane-backend.

if I reduce the dpi, it scans without stopping, but I need to scan at 320dpi.

Thanks,
Michael Ole Olsen

[sane-devel] HP ScanJet 6300C head moving back/forth during scan 200dpi

2008-04-14 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
Hello, I am having problem using my HP ScanJet 6300C with libusb and
xsane+sane backend from debian testing. I have also tried debian etch
version on another computer with same issues, and I even tried
downgrading my sane backend (then it went completely insane and almost
broke the scanner). Right now im testing on a cometely fresh install of
Debian/testing.

There are no scanner modules loaded/in kernel and the kernel is PREEMPT 2.6.23.9

When I do a scan, it waits about 6-8 seconds before scanning (just like
it is calibrating), then it moves the scanner head back and forth while
scanning (only when i get over approx. 200dpi)

I did read somewhere on this mailinglist, that it had to do with USB
bandwidth, so the scanner must wait at above 200dpi for the transfer of
data to complete over USB.

I'm using it with a high-speed USB 2.0 hub, so i dont see how there
could be any kind of transfer-bottleneck.

I tried adding 'option enable-image-buffering' to top of
/etc/sane.d/hp.conf just like man sane-hp says to make it global, with
no results.

I tried enabling debugging a few times, the output didn't seem useable,
but I can post it if needed.

I have had the same issues with a plustek scanner (Canon LIDE 30) and libusb:
grinding
noise and scanner head moving forth and back while scan 200dpi.

[sane-devel] HP ScanJet 6300C head moving back/forth during scan 200dpi

2008-04-14 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
Hello again

It's a USB-2.0 machine (the hub is integrated on the motherboard,
ASUS A7N8X deluxe), and I have had no other issues with the usb hub
running fullspeed; I get fine transfer speed to my camera with gphoto2
and to my usb-sticks.

No problems under Windows and also no problems when using the scanner with
scsi or scanner-server (rj45), so the scanner isn't wrecked.

I cannot use the SCSI feature on this computer though - and I don't have
the scanner server here, that's why I want to use it with USB.

I did read somewhere on this mailinglist, that it had to do with USB
bandwidth, so the scanner must wait at above 200dpi for the transfer of
   data to complete over USB.

I'm using it with a high-speed USB 2.0 hub, so i dont see how there
could be any kind of transfer-bottleneck.

it's a usb 1.0 machine? does it do this on windows?

[sane-devel] HP ScanJet 6300C head moving back/forth during scan 200dpi

2008-04-14 Thread Michael Ole Olsen
I think you may be right that the scanner is USB-1.1 , I have
unfortunately only tested with scsi under windows and I dont have access
to a Windows machine currently.

What I could find out on google it seems to be usb-1.1 but im not 100%
sure.

I tried setting the scanning speed to low in xsane but the speed is the
same as with normal speed still when scanning, i would think that this could
fix the going
back and forth of the scanning head because of the scanners potential
usb-1.1 bottleneck ?

[sane-devel] HP ScanJet 6300C head moving back/forth during scan 200dpi

2008-04-14 Thread Michael Ole Olsen

I found that I can scan at maximum of 160dpi at Slow scan speed.

If there was a possible way to change scan speed to slower than slow,
i.e. set some integer value for scanspeed, im
sure it would make the scanner stop moving the head back and forth while
scanning.

if i set it to high scan speed it moves forth and back very often, and
not so often at slow speed - tested with 200dpi

is it possible to set scan speed with some argument to sane backend or
such with hp libusb driver?

I tried adding 'option enable-image-buffering' to top of
/etc/sane.d/hp.conf just like man sane-hp says to make it global, with
 no results.

I tried enabling debugging a few times, the output didn't seem useable,
but I can post it if needed.

I have had the same issues with a plustek scanner (Canon LIDE 30) and libusb:
 grinding
noise and scanner head moving forth and back while scan 200dpi.

Can anybody help me sort this out?
