[sane-devel] Any further with canoscan LiDE 500F?
Hi Jeff, Looking through the archives I see a number of postings on developing a driver for the Canon Canoscan LiDE 500F. How far did you get? Unfortunately, I have not even got started, since I have very little time and some other projects in need of attention. Currently, I am using the scanner under Mac OS X. But I am still interested in a working sane backend, so maybe we should collaborate on this? Michael

Quoting Jeff Shrowder shrow...@uniting.com.au: I've used SnoopPro to log the traffic over the usb and got this enormous log :-) but where to from here? I can do 'lots of staring at usb logs' - there's plenty to stare at :-) What am I looking for? Jeff A comparison of log data with canon LiDE35/50 should show how the frontend is loaded for image acquisition. The chip uses remains unknown at this point. A comparison shouls also show whether the image transport is similar to genesys GL841. A small image sould be enough to tell. regards, Gerald

In my first couple of posts to the sane-dev-list - which you may not have seen - I expressed interest in working with others on such a project because I'm not a progammer. I can't really count a brief engagement with COBOL and an IBM 1401 main-frame in the 1960's and lots BASIC on several Z80-based machines in the 1980's :-) Anyway, I've had my canoscan LiDE 500F for just a week (the trusty Mustek finally croaked). It's plugged into a redundant dual-boot win98/RH9 box which is networked to another couple of Linux boxes I use every day. That's my present solution to my need for an operational scanner. I've used SnoopPro to log the traffic over the usb and got this enormous log :-) but where to from here? I can do 'lots of staring at usb logs' - there's plenty to stare at :-) What am I looking for? I didn't do any further work, apart from those postings. I don't know if Michael made any progress. If you are willing to add code for the Canon Canoscan LiDE 500F, I am able to help you with some of the driver related aspects. You still need to figure out the scanner specifics, like how to switch between full ccd resolution and half(to name something more obscure). This involves hours of experiments, good guesses, and a lot staring at usb logs. Regards, Pierre

So, what do I need to log the data moving over the USB bus? Jeff Hi Jeff Search the mail archive list for usbsnoopy. The search should yield a site where that program for use on windows can be obtained, and there should be examples in the list that have answers on how to use it as well. The most recent emails that I remember were by Stef Voltz in response to requests from other searchers. usbsnoopy questions are asked fairly frequently, so the answers should be available as far as using the program is concerned. The problems encountered with newer hardware might not be available yet, so do ask if you do not find. best regards, Gerald

What is the current situation? I'm not so sure I can help with developing that support (I'm no programmer) but I am interested in getting this model supported. Is there any other way I can help? Jeff Shrowder Hi Jeff, canon-LiDE 80, canon-LiDE 500F Source of information: http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs.html backend: genesys-gl841 image acquisition: LiDE 80: Holtek HT82V36 (16-bit Analog/Digital converter for ccd and cis images) LiDE 500F: ? There is some information on the Holtek chip. Possibly more documentation on the chips would be needed to develop from specifications. Another method of developing sane support is to work from logs taken from a working OS, by inspecting data as it travels over the USB bus. - No such logs have been made available - No developer has declared intent to integrate these scanners into sane. Beyond the image acquisition the development effort might be minimal, as canon's vendor-specific protocol for Lide 35 and 50 are known, and the genesys code already has support for CIS images. Someone would need to have such a scanner available, and carry the development forward. best regards, Gerald Gerald, Since I last posted my old Mustek has croaked it and I've actually taken the plunge and bought the 500F (can't live/work without a scanner grin) and have it plugged into my dual-boot box (Win98/RH9) on my home network. So, what do I need to log the data moving over the USB bus? Cheers, Jeff

I'm not so sure I can help with developing that support (I'm no programmer) but I am interested in getting this model supported. Is there any other way I can help? I haven't bought one of these scanners yet - but I'd like to when my present 5 year old, and much worked, mustek finally croaks - which may not be all that far away :-) Jeff Shrowder
