1. Are you sure the password is correct?

2. Have you seen

3. What is your operating system, distribution, their versions, etc.?

4. Is there anything in the debug logs? (Help -> Debug Window)

Pidgin is not en email client, so cannot connect to gmail.  If you meant 
Google Talk, see  
however beware that these XMPP interfaces are constantly at threat by 
moves to completely proprietary interfaces, such as Hangouts.
