Well, Google Talk/Google Chat was recently rebranded as "Google Hangouts" and I'm using Pidgin to speak using it without any major problems using Google's XMPP interface. Some other alternatives are: 1. XMPP - open source and standard and distributed. 2. Facebook - see https://github.com/dequis/purple-facebook . Works pretty well in Pidgin.
