Request to close ticket 4912 and some thoughts on the development of QQ protocol
Dear pidgin developers and QQ protocol users, This ticket [1] was opened 2 years ago. Fortunately, the issue was fixed in the (partially) implemented QQ 2008 protocol. I believe it's time to close it. The QQ protocol is supposedly being developed by the OpenQ team, but apparently, they haven't shown the public their effort since Jan. 17th [2]. The user contributed patch was ignored, which was submitted to their Google group list [3]. A separated ticket tracker is there, with 5 tickets, none of which has been resolved [4]. If a visit to this link is paid [5], you would see that there are so many tickets opened in the official channel but with little or no attention. One may conclude the failure of the developers, or/and the mode of assigning the development to a loose managed team. I would not recommend any discussion on this, but rather, I'd like to call the community to have a look into this issue, and if possible, start working by taking care of the unclosed tickets and the completion of 2008 protocol. So what should I do now? Waiting for next version of Pidgin? You will need to obtain a detailed protocol specification, with no non-disclosure restrictions, from the people who operate the QQ service, or you will need to find technically minded users of the service who are able to reverse engineer the changes. What is the business model of QQ's operators? Some business models are incompatible with open source clients, which would guarantee that they wouldn't cooperate. In practice, you will probably then need to find open source programmers in China to update the relevant parts of Pidgin. The US and European developers are unlikely to have a great interest in subscribing to QQ to reverse engineer it, and, in the unlikely event that documentation is provided, are unlikely to be able to read it. All Pidgin development is done by volunteers, and anyone can volunteer, as long as they have the necessary skills and the legal right to copyright their own computer software (people who work as professional computer programmers, in many countries, cannot own what they write, even if they do it in their spare time!). I would suggest searching for Chinese language open source developer forums and posting there. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. QQ messages are displayed as (NULL)
Hello, First of all, I have searched a lot for this bug and it seems a LOT of other people are experiencing it as well. The weird thing is that they were all marked as closed or fixed since version 2.5.0 (the tickets). And people have been complaining since that version that it doesn't work anymore. All the messages in QQ that are sent to me, and even the nicknames and other profile information, are displayed as (NULL). However the issue seems to be related to the GTK libraries -- specifically, ANY version after 2.12.1-rev-b is unstable with QQ and makes the messages display as (NULL). Why I am shocked is that if you downgrade to version 2.12.1-rev-b it works fine. (latest pidgin version 2.5.4 works with a downgraded GTK version! but it has some crashes or GUI problems...) Clearly, this is a problem that is not noticed. How come? GTK has been updated this year (2009) and it still has that 'bug'. I'm disappointed totally. Why do mods keep closing these tickets? It is not fixed, not even in the latest GTK version (in 2009!) to my disappointment. Please make a patch or something to make it work, or at least take this into account :( Thanks. ___ Support mailing list Support@pidgin.im http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

There were some patches that fixed the problem that you described above, but it seems that QQ protocol now has new login system that is causing trouble for Pidgin. Assuming everything I just wrote is true, you can only keep your fingers crossed and wait for new version of Pidgin. -- You received this question notification because you are a member of Pidgin Support, which is an answer contact for pidgin in ubuntu. ___ Support mailing list Support@pidgin.im http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

Problems in QQ login in 64bit Ubuntu
Dear Sir or Madam, I am a true-hearted user of Pidgin. Thank you very much for your contributions. Recently, I compiled and installed Pidgin 2.3.1 on my laptop with Ubuntu-gusty-64bit, because I knew that some improvements had been made to support QQ. I tried to login my qq, but the program suggested Login failed, no reply, however, at the same time I could login my gtalk and msn without any trouble. But the most strange thing is, when I installed the i386 version of pidgin 2.3.1 with lots of 32bit libraries implemented, I can easily login my QQ, but meanwhile, gtalk and msn failed. So I am wonder if there is any deadly difference between 32bit Pidgin 2.3.1 and 64bit one in QQ supporting. I hope you can help me with my problem. Looking forwards to your reply. Re: QQ Login Problem
On Mon, 22 Oct 2007 22:00:12 +0100, Florian Ehinger wrote Hello I have problems login to qq using pidgin. I have read that there has been a bug which should be fixed by now. But I still have this problem with 2.2.1. The error message is that the password is wrong, but I am really sure that it is correct! I checked it several times and it worked for example with lumaqq. Does anybody know sth about this topic? Thanks Florian That bug has not been fixed yet.
