Hi there,

Based on the timing of your email, are you talking about the recent closure
of the Google GTalk servers? If so, you'll want to move over to the
googlechat plugin.

Otherwise, if not, are you able to share what service/server you're trying
to connect to that's failing - or maybe what the error message youre
getting in Pidgin?

Just a little correction: as is the nature of a free software not backed by a
company. If some company decided to throw resources into pidgin, I think stuff
would get implemented much quicker (depending on goals of the company too
though).

This was intended to be in Pidgin version 3 but as is the nature of
Free Software it didn't happen as developers didn't continue with this
work.

Naturally all the Pidgin source code is out there and if someone wants
it enough they could implement it themselves or even pay someone else
to do it for them.

I would say because video is an advanced telephony application, not an
instant text messaging one.

Also, like most open source software, the number of developers
interested in Windows is rather low. Pidgin works on Windows mainly
because its graphical widgets library does, not because it is the main
target platform.

Oh, gosh… Sorry, I've just migrated to KMail, but of course not even once I
tried to it worked correctly. I did write an answer, but this time stupid KMail
didn't get it from the external editor, and sent an empty mail.

Oh well, on to the topic — I'm not a pidgin dev, but I'm pretty sure the answer
would be: because nobody implemented. I'm also pretty sure that if you want to
take a stab at implementing it, your patches would be more than welcome.

Well, given somebody gonna contribute the code, skype plugin is one possible

Many protocols support video. For example: Skype, Whatsapp, Hangouts, Jingle,

Maybe somebody who corresponded with him could ask him about the change?

Contact your instant messaging service provider. Pidgin is a program

my question goes into how to use it

First, please reply all when emailing this list so that your responses go
the entire list.

Secondly, the Bonjour protocol (or more properly known as ZeroConfig) is
already supported in Pidgin, so when you say I would love to see more
features on this IM it leads me to believe that you don't know that it is
already supported. But please be aware that Bonjour does a lot more than
chat. For example, Pidgin won't help you find a Bonjour-supported printer,
or find AirPlay devices on your network. :)

Here is the wikipedia article on ZeroConfig:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-configuration_networking

From an implementation perspective, your network complexity can make or
break a Bonjour roll-out. This is because of the way discovery works.
Unless you have an mDNS reflector, running Bonjour from different subnets
can have problems. http://linux.die.net/man/5/avahi-daemon.conf

From a Linux-desktop perspective, install avahi-discover and it should work
automatically.

I do believe there is a lack of documentation on this topic, but from a
functionality perspective, it already works very well!

Below is a screenshot of Windows 8 talking to Ubuntu 12.04 using the
Bonjour protocol.

- How do I create an account.
- What do I need to be running t make the account work (you said to
install avahi-discover) but I think this is more complex than flipping
a switch on the preferences. IE seems this is a gtk app and I use KDE.
- What is the process to discover users, is there a 'scan' tool or
does users just show up on my buddy list.
- I see that the users show up on a bonjour group. Is this the default?

Below is a screenshot of Windows 8 talking to Ubuntu 12.04 using the

That is normally considered a bad idea, although this list might be an
exception http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html. I have
certainly made private replies on list on ones set to reply to list.
It also doesn't necessarily work. I forced it on a reply I made and the
OP still replied to me.

Another thing that is normally bad practice, but can be essential on
this list, is to CC the OP.

What makes this list special is that most people posting to it have
never used a mailing list before, and they are nearly all unsubscribed.
Many think they are talking to some Pidgin support contact centre. As
a result, they don't see replies that are not CCed to them and they
think that anyone answering is their personal support person.

Re: Hello World, how to use bonjour

2014-11-03 Thread Tres Finocchiaro

This is my point. A more specific questions goes on the lines of:
 - How do I create an account.

You don't. Adium's tutorial
ftp://ftp.cs.stanford.edu/pub/Mac/Adium.app/Contents/Resources/AdiumHelp/pgs/Account-Bonjour.htmlis
a bit better in this regard (the software differs slightly, but same idea)

 - What do I need to be running t make the account work (you said to
install avahi-discover) but I think this is more complex than flipping
a switch on the preferences. IE seems this is a gtk app and I use KDE.

Pidgin already requires GTK and avahi-discover uses GTK w/ what appears to
be a python-gtk GUI. I'm not sure if there is a gui-less version, you'll
have to contact the avahi list, but as a KDE user I doubt this is the first
GTK app you've installed.

 - What is the process to discover users, is there a 'scan' tool or does
users just show up on my buddy list.

They just show up. It's part of the protocol. You can use the command
line tool avahi-discover as well, if you are ok with installing it.

 - I see that the users show up on a bonjour group. Is this the default?

Yes.

If you read carefully you could see that I already knew all that. I was
asking for Pidgin Bonjour documentation and not Bonjour documentation.
Which is why I was addressing this mailing list.

And I stated that documentation is lacking in this regard. Do you normally
criticize those that help you? :)

Pidgin is open source software developed by many volunteers over the
course of 15 years. Some of us operate a 501(c)(3) non-profit related
to Instant Messaging, but that's tangental. It's inaccurate to refer
to Pidgin as a company.

Can I suggest reading:

Aside from that, asking questions on this mailing list is probably the

@Alex,

You will need to contact your internal IT department, or in the case you
are using a 3rd party service (such as AIM, Google, Yahoo) you would then
need to escalate the issue with the appropriate account support process
(often through a website).

This support address is for help with the Pidgin software. We do not have
access to your accounts or your passwords.

If Pidgin came with your computer, please contact the representative that
set it up for you, they will be able to help.

The current release of Pidgin is 2.10.6, but there are no security

2.10.5, which is the last version that had a security fix included it in.

If you are using a version of Fedora earlier than 16 your OS is not
being updated at all for any reason, security or otherwise, and you
should upgrade to a newer version of Fedora.

If you are not receiving updates to Pidgin and are running Fedora 16 or
newer, there is something wrong with your repository configuration.

Why are you using a development version? Development versions can be
expected to be buggy.

You need to provide the debug log contents, and, unless you are using
this version specifically to find bugs, you should be using the latest
released version.

If this is the only version that Ubuntu provide, you should ask them for
support.

The message actually has a frowning face icon and says:

No such nick or channel
irc1.smashthestack.org

Why do you believe that the server should know about the resource you
are referencing?

Without further information, this looks like user error or a problem
with the IRC server that you are using.

The technical cause of this message is that the server returned a 401 or
406 response.

From http://irchelp.org/irchelp/rfc/chapter6.html#c6_1

401
ERR_NOSUCHNICK
nickname :No such nick/channel
- Used to indicate the nickname parameter supplied to a command
  is currently unused.

406
ERR_WASNOSUCHNICK
nickname :There was no such nickname
- Returned by WHOWAS to indicate there is no history information
  for that nickname.

Assuming pidgin is substituting the correct information into the
message, and the server is providing it correctly, my guess would be
that you have entered a server address when you should have entered a
nickname.

The pidgin debug log may tell you which command failed, if it was a 401
response.

PS Please do not try to force replies off the mailing list (you had a

2010-03-06 Thread Ethan Blanton
David Woolley spake unto us the following wisdom:
PS Please do not try to force replies off the mailing list (you had a
 Reply-To header set).

Please don't list police things like this. Setting a Reply-To header
when sending to a mailing list (or when sending anywhere, for that
matter), is a perfectly normal thing to do. This should not mess up
your mailer; reply, list reply, and group reply should all work the
same regardless of whether or not the sender set a Reply-To. If they
do not, it is *your* problem, and not the sender's.

I'm noticing a number of dubious list etiquette posts lately (not just
from David, and this isn't to single him out -- his just happened to
be the email I replied to). If you are not a Pidgin developer or
otherwise affiliated with the project, please refrain from correcting
general netiquette behaviors on this list. When an individual user
makes such a correction, it makes it look like the Pidgin project is
making the correction, as most list readers don't know who is
affiliated and who is not.

Post-specific things like please reply to the list instead of
directly to me are fine, of course.

Ethan
