[Translators-l] Translation Request for Interview Invite

deployment of a new feature on five Wikipedia projects. Those
Wikipedias are Catalan, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, and Norwegian.

[Translators-l] Translation help needed for technical improvements around Templates

find it a bit inconvenient as a translator. I wonder, is there any better 
channel to segment the translation original into smaller chunk by any tool, 
before announcing translation request?

I find Translation originals tend to be in too big chunks in past two months, 
regardless of which WMF team issues. Noting it is the start of a new fiscal 
year/ projects/ final Movement Strategy phase, more requests come in to 
internationalize documents on mailing lists/announcements. Hats off to those 
who have completed those requested tasks!

translation original needs not to be based on context, but rather on word 
count: 
* less than five sentences each  please.

We could also make the main page translatable itself: the {{Main
page|en}} transclusion would be translatable.

Or we could have a single ‘Main page’ page, with no subpages for
translation, and use a code that includes the correct template e.g.
{{Main page|{{CURRENTLANGUAGE or {{Special:MyLanguage/Template:Main
page}}.

Please don’t be so poor when giving technical solutions — :).

That's already the case in MediaWiki.org because 
$wgTranslatePageTranslationULS is true.



The problem is that [[Main page]] is not a translatable page, 
[[Template:Main page]] is. The easy solution is to move the template and 
avoid transclusion.

OK… Well, to my mind it might not be clear enough, but I won’t take the
responsibility to ask for another design. I’d say it would be cool
however if changing the language at the top would also try to go to
localized version of the current page.

The logo links to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki .
If you want https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/MediaWiki
 you'd need to edit https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mainpage I
think.

of the page, but the ‘Home’ link just below links to the localized
version. Couldn’t the logo link be fixed?

Because of this it took time to me to find how to see the page in my
language. Shouldn’t there be a  tag at the beginning of the
page (more likely on the template)?

Thanks for explaining the history behind this and ! I was not aware of
the old manual subpage-translation system and this finally allows me to
understand why there are so many subpages!

Alright, when I'm going to do that later this week this would mean that
we'll have a time with less translations on the front page.

Overall, this is going to be quite complicated because of how the main
page currently works on mw.o (via all the sub-templates listed at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Main_page_templates ).
IIUC, It is currently using the (ancient) manual subpage-translation
system rather than the newer  extension system. I.e. You
could update https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Main_page/users_text
fairly easily if we want to keep using this old system, but AFAICT
none of the translations of that section would have any indication
that the source had changed (beyond watchlist/RC).

If we want to keep using this old system, then I think the most
practical order to do the update in would be
1. Update https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Main_page and
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Main_page/styles.css so that
it contains the new structure (but using the same 5 pre-existing
content sources (intro/using/developing/admin/news).
2. Create the new content source block (help), using the same subtemplate system

Over the last months we've worked on a new frontpage for mediawiki.org
which will replace the current https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki
 soon (probably next week).

You can find the new version at

As this is the front page and highly visible, it would be great if you
could help translating it to your language!

I admit that I do not know the best practices for the translation process.
Can the proposal page already be marked for translation and can I then
easily "move" these translations, once I copy (not: move) the content
of the English version into https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki ?
Or does translation have to wait until the proposal has been moved?

Thanks for commenting. I too have some trust in WMF research, but my focus
here is on WMF courtesy to the community. Speaking only for myself, I don't
appreciate short notice from WMF when I think there is no compelling reason
for WMF to rush the community into responding to a WMF decision. Also,
giving the community more notice allows people to plan and organize their
schedules further in advance rather than making people feel that they
should drop an already planned activity in order to respond to a short
notice decision or request from WMF.

WMF has adequate financial resources to hire professional translators for
short notice requests of a few sentences, and the community is not
obligated to fulfill WMF's every desire with volunteer time, especially not
on short notice and when WMF can easily hire contractors to do the work.
The time of skilled good-faith volunteers is very valuable, and I want to
insulate good-faith volunteers from becoming frustrated or feeling overused
by WMF.

I think that you are being nice by agreeing to accept short notice
requests, but I think that in general WMF should avoid making short notice
requests or decisions that affect others, especially volunteers. Sometimes
short notice is difficult to avoid, and I don't want to set unrealistic
expectatations, but for this request I see no compelling reason for short
notice. A wise person once wrote, "Your failure to plan does not constitute
my emergency."

Wikimedia in its ability to study the involvement of the various
communities in the movement and to hear from them, to fight against
imbalances and monopolies. Therefore I think that if the WMF staff think
they will be more efficient by giving short notice requests to
translators, they should feel free to do it. In any case, there will
still be missing translations.

Hi Elana,

I continue to think that a rush here is not needed. The strategy process is
a long term one, and different from something like a response to a security
incident where a short turnaround may be highly desirable. I would like the
strategy process to proceed at a reasonable pace, and I think that a
request for translations into all of the languages that you mentioned in
seven days would be okay.

A high level of expertise is not the same as a high level of availabiliy.

In general, I don't take it very well when WMF makes short notice requests
to volunteers without a compelling reason.

I want to keep the strategy process moving forward, but I also want WMF to
be respectful of volunteers' time. I think that a 24 hour turnaround here
is unnecessary. I can't stop WMF from making short notice requests for
volunteers' time, and likely some volunteers will generously respond in
that timeframe, but I think that short notice requests should generally be
avoided as a matter of courtesy even if they are realistic. Volunteers will
be plenty active during WMF's holidays. If WMF wants to have translations
done before WMF holidays then I think that WMF should make the request
further in advance.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, we want to do our best to get the job posting 
to the community as quickly as possible in order to maximize the amount of time 
potential applicants have to give it consideration. We are shooting for 
approximately 24 hours, but may re-evaluate depending on the translations we 
receive.

We took multiple factors into account when making this determination: the short 
length of the translation (one paragraph), the high level of expertise in the 
translator community, and the fact that many in the community may be beginning 
their holidays next week. Furthermore, based on past experience, we know that a 
little over 24 hours is generally sufficient. Again, we may revisit this 
depending on progress.

However, I have a concern. Volunteers in many languages, in my experience,
don't simply appear within 24 hours when someone wants a non-urgent
translation, and I think that as a matter of courtesy WMF should give more
than 24 hours' notice for a request of this nature. I think that 7 days
might be realistic. Is there a reason for such short notice, and is there a
reason that WMF cannot wait longer than 24 hours for a translation before
posting this message to village pumps if a volunteer does not provide one
within 24 hours?

These are templates that are used in wikis in some languages to show that
there issues with the page, such as:
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Unreferenced
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Notability

... and others.

This question makes me think, however: Why are they called "page issues"?
Where did the particular term "page issues" come from? Was it coined by the
developers of MobileFrontend, or by editors on some wikis?

On the English Wikipedia they are called "message boxes" or "article
messages". In French they are called "bandeau d'article" (that's "article
bands"; bands means "stripes"). In Hebrew they are called "Templates that
ask changes in the article" (תבניות הדורשות שינויים בערך).

And this points to me an even deeper problem: How can this be discussed
well across the different language communities if the naming and the
implementation of this is so different in each language? Note that I'm not
saying that this cannot be discussed, but that discussing this must be done
carefully and without assuming that the way in which something is done in
one language is identical to how it's done in other language.

I'm also not saying that it's *good* that it's done differently in
different languages. Quite possibly, these warning templates could be
converted into an actual extension that stores metadata of this kind about
the article—unreferenced, notability, style, perhaps also "stub".
Customizations for each language should probably be possible, but a basic
set of "page issues" could be made that covers most languages' and sites'
common needs. When we have this as an extension, MobileFronted will be able
to read this information meaningfully, understand its intent, and present
it accordingly.

This is the discussion that we really should be having, instead of hacking
MobileFrontend around the current local templates in each wiki.

To export for offline translation
1) On Special:Translate, click the "Export" tab (next to the
search box in Vector skin)
2) Select Off-line export format and click Fetch

You will get a Gettext po file which is supported by many offline
translation tools.

To import offline translations
1) Go to Special:ImportTranslations
2) Choose your translated file and click upload
3) Review the changes and click execute
4) Check your contribution history to confirm that import happened

The po file for import must be well-formed and the special
X-Language-Code and X-Message-Group headers must be intact. Let me
know if there are issues with this workflow.

mobile apps. This feature would allow users of the apps to create

easier to find deleted pages at Special:Undelete. We'd like to deploy this
feature to all wikis in the near future. We have a short message to send
out to Admin notice boards. We desire to do so in as many local languages

I didn't wish to waste translators time by translating into a language we
wouldn't use in this round of reaching out to Wikipedia communities. My
apologies for any confusion as I was unaware that it would acutely prevent
- as in stop you from saving - translations to any languages outside the
list.

Philippe, I hope you can see by the sheer number of languages I did ask for
that I had no intent to forbid any language!  Thank you for sharing you
concerns, I appreciate the education in the nuance of language. Sincerely.

I've removed the check from the box preventing translations.

Note that you have forbidden French, but have allowed "Simple English"
which is definitely not a priority (standard English is already in the
source, and there's actually no real need to "simplify" it in this
translation request).

In general all major linguas francas (spoken in many countries) should be
enabled in all translation requests, even if it's not the final intended
target. And anyway this page is important for all languages, not just
minority ones, as it is about a new general feature.

As the result, you'll get translations ONLY in countries where English is
widely understood as a official, regional or native primary/secondary
language, and widely taught in schools with a good skill level. This
request won't work like you'd like in South America (except possibly
Argentina but you don't have any minority language listed for that
country), India (English is secondary, Hindi is official, but many people
cannot read English and translate it correctly to their regional language),
South-East Asia, Western/North/Central Africa. And where another major
lingua franca is used (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese),
English understanding translation skills are largely underdeveloped.

Why forbidding French ? Many of the minority languages selected are for
users that cannot understand English but would more likely read French
(notably in Africa, but also in Canada), and could translate from the
French base (or at least read the French version in case of ambiguity)

English is frequently a very ambiguous language (absence of orthographic
distinction of nouns vs. verbs, frequent ommission of prepositions, many
terms with multiple meanings, abuse of capitalization...). English is not
the only "lingua franca" of the world, you can safely add French, Spanish,
Russian, Arabic, Hindi and Chinese. But French, Spanish, Russian and
Chinese are... forbidden here!

In all the listed languages allowed, these are spoken by very small
communities with very few contributors on Wikimedia, and even less ones
that are translators: if you restrict them to be able to read and
understand English, you'll get almost no translation for many of these
languages where English is not a **major** secondary language.

Take an example: translating to Breton (Brezhoneg), not a lot translators
for this language, but almost all of them use French as their primary
language (Breton is almost always a secondary regional language understood
now by a minority in its native region), English is much less understood by
these translators and they would appreciate having a good quality French
version at least to check what they more or less attempt to read in English.

Mohammed, is there any chance that you have been using Google Translate for
this?  I'm concerned about this because there does not seem to be a verb in
the first sentence that you have translated into Spanish, but it does match
what Google Translate produces  (Google Translate incorrectly interprets
the word complete as if it were an adjective instead of a verb (a
complete mistake instead of students finished it).

Hi Everyone,

Juliet here from the WMF Communications team. We're playing with some
potential words for Product messaging and are wondering how the below
options translate to other languages.

We would love your thoughts on how translatable these three words are and
what they mean to you in the languages you speak.


   - *Stacks* - objects arranged in a pile (typically a neat one) on top of
   one another (a stack of paper)
   - *Boards* -- not the wood kind, but like a notice board where
   information can be displayed (like Pinterest Boards if you use Pinterest)
   - *Sets* -- a collection of things, ideas, etc. (a set of keys)

Depending on how many responses we get, we may want to start a spreadsheet

Boards as in notice board is easy too: Opslagstavle - and Pinterest uses
that word in their Danish version. To me it has a non-digital sound and
feel to it though.
Set is also easy: Sæt.

There's a known bug when you mark a page for translation: it does not
update the translations statistics with the new marked page, but with the
recorded state just before you marked it. Newly marked units are not
visible (most probably due to a caching issue: the state o translation
units are read and cached before they are updated, and then that cached
state is used to generate the statistics.

The Translation tool exhibit this bad behavior since always (this also
affects the translations just submitted in a unit: the last updated unit is
ignored in statistics, you need to submit that last unit a second time,
otherwise you won't reach the 100% completion state).

The workaround is to mark pages a second time (this often requires a pseudo
null-edit (adding a space with no visible effect ad marking the page again,
I usually play with the space before the slash in languages /

That bug exists in all Wikimedia wikis, but not in Translate.net because it
does not have the same page caching architecture with front proxies.
Wikimedia wikis use multiple servers that need to be synchronized: When an
API performs an update, cached data must be invalidated before proceeding
with another API that will use the modified data (currently that second
call will use preimage data; and notably all delayed updates currently
made by FuzzyBot).

This also means that Translation statistics are completely wrong. When you
want to use translated pages, before exporting make sure you mark all
languages again with a pseudo null edit to force statistics to be updated
and see if they are really 100% complete or if they still have fuzzy
entries.

Hi Seb35,

translations are still welcome and needed in these languages (French,
Italian, Russian, Dutch). There has been, or maybe still is, a weird
technical issue with the first banner's translation group, e.g. the
stats page at [1] was claiming until a few hours age this group has 0
units (and 0 have been translated in any language, even though it has
3 units and translations already existed (e.g. [2]), being shown to
millions of mobile readers over the last few days. The message you
encountered looks like a different symptom of the same problem.

It is looking OK now again though, are you able to enter French
translations at [3] now?

The issue is particularly strange because the translation group for
the second banner did not show the same behavior (i.e. the stats at
[4] continued to correctly show it as containing 3 messages, and
recorded the existing translations correctly as well). That's even
though both banners are completely identical except for the
text,[5][6] and I didn't see anything in the logs that could have
caused that difference. I strongly suspect it's a bug. Or is there
another explanation? Any insights are welcome.

Actually it just occurred to me that there was one aspect in which
those two banners differed:
We cloned Wpapp2014Androidmobile_1 into another banner for test
purposes 
(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/Heathertest
), but Wpapp2014Androidmobile_2 wasn't cloned afaik. And the time of
the cloning would be consistent with the times of the empty banner
occurrences. Just a hunch though; normally cloning should of course
leave the original banner intact.

BTW, I just updated
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:CentralNotice/Translations a bit.
