That bug does not apply. It looks more like
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389725, which I didn't remember… But
it's still not the same.

The maddening thing is, that it does work for all fonts on another computer
with essentially the same setup. Obviously, there must be some difference
somewhere, but what?

Yes, same font family (Hack). I checked with the distinctive lower-case i.

Several monospace fonts don't provide a bold variant at all and you'd
still have to install it.

Hack has a bold variant.

Iirc we also skipped formatting of very long messages altogether, so
ensure you didn't test that w/ a mail of two cities.

Checked for that with test message containing *bold*, /italic/, _underline_.
Bold doesn't work for me on this Laptop configured with KDE Breeze theme
either.
On my other one where theming is diffrent and configured by qt5ct, it
works.

Italic and underline work on both machines. So the issue is reproducable,
no matter if it's a bug or caused by the font.

Oskar

Erik

It is customary. Trojitá has marked up some parts of plain text emails
since as long as I can remember, following even older conventions about
*bold*, /italic/, and _underlined_. (It also makes links out of URLs and
mail addresses.)

I would tend to think that "text/plain" is just that. The text is shown as
typed, stars or any other characters.

Convention makes it a little bit more than that.

Interpreting "Markdown" or other "rich text" formatting
languages is an assumption to make for plain text emails.

5 * 6 = 30

How did you know I wanted that bold?

I cannot know and I'm not involved (apart from the fact that I updated the
regular expressions involved for compatibility with newer versions of Qt).
Trojitá just has some simple logic built in to detect some common patterns.

Anyway, my post was not about that. Given that Trojitá marks some parts of
plain text emails as bold, I am faced with the issue that on one of my
installations, the bold does not appear. I would like to find out what is
the problem, so that I can fix it.

Best,

Erik

Many clients handle HTML emails with bold tags etc, and that is common
for text that has to be formatted but that entails graphic design issues, bugs,
and viruses which are much more complicated and less reliable to handle.

[trojita] No bold for text/plain mail (monospace font) in message viewer

2021-02-12 Thread Erik Quaeghebeur

Hi,

On a new computer, I have the problem that Trojitá does not display
monospace text bold. Such text is used for text with stars around in
text/plain parts in the message viewer. On my old computer, bold is shown.
Bold is also shown in the message list and message header, which both use a
proportional font. Other applications (such as Kate and Konsole) show bold
monospace fonts fine.

So it must be a configuration issue. But I can't find out where. I know
there were some KDE/Qt bugs related to bold text for monospaced fonts not
working a few years back. However, none of the workarounds mentioned there
seem appropriate.

Does anyone have any idea?

Best,

Erik
