I have the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook (15,4, ATI x1300), but it behaves differently depending on use of AC power or battery: 1. On AC power: it turns 100% bright randomly. Manually setting it darker works for a few minutes, then it increases to 100% again. 2. On battery: The default if darker. I have an i915 video adapter. I can reproduce it with compiz both on and off. I noticed that I cannot reproduce it on my other computer, which has a Geforce 7600GT using the nVidia binary driver blob fwiw. I've attached a backtrace. I noticed that I originally used the word crash, but this was probably poor word choice--the program stops responding. I got the attached backtrace by doing the following: 1. Switch to non-monoscope visualization. 2. Switch back to monoscope visualization. 3. Acknowledge error message described in original bug report by pressing OK. 4. Quit rhythmbox. At this point, rhythmbox stops responding, so I sent it a STOP signal and got the backtrace. I have no idea but I *know* that one of my machines dies right after finishing booting here with Gutsy. The stopgap measure was to just boot with the older, feisty kernel (letting grub know that the default boot entry was the feisty one because that machine is headless and I don't have time to lug around a monitor just to diagnose the clunker). There's no easy way to point-and-click your route to the installatin of the feisty kernel, but if you manage to do it, you will have no problems because the feisty kernel works just fine with Gutsy. That seems to have been the main problem. The distribution upgrade got all the way to the Installing the Upgrades step, but appears to have stopped. I clicked on the Show Terminal button but nothing is in the terminal window and the progress bar has been at 0% for about 30 minutes with no apparent HD activity. I started to close and restart the upgrade window, but received a message indicating the system might be in an unusable state so I cancelled it.
