[Bug 47386] Re: Ubuntu Dapper Samba shares - broken for some

2008-05-24 Thread Sandeep Kundra
I also ran into this same exact problem; Samba shares worked without a
problem from Ubuntu 7.04 and upgrade to 7.10. Some relatively recent
patch(es) in about the April timeframe broke the connectivity. I
upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the problem is still occurring.

I was able to get a partial solution by using webmin to work on the
smb.conf file, suggesting to me that this might be partially
configuration related.

I only have a partial solution as I have multiple shares and am now able
to access 3 of them (drives in NTFS format, moved over from Win2K
system; root/root owner/group 755 permissions) are working. The other
shares are consistently giving a Windows network access error (ext
format, fred/fred owner/group 755 permissions).

Like a number of other people I have removed and reinstalled Samba in
various configurations.

[Bug 74164] Re: Request ntp-servers by default

2008-05-24 Thread Daniel J Blueman
The fix for this, and obvious intended behaviour is:

 - add 'ntp-servers' to the 'request' directive in /etc/dhcpd3/dhclient.conf
 - add 'default ntp-servers 91.189.94.4' (ntp.ubuntu.com) to
/etc/dhcpd3/dhclient.conf

I confirm that where the DHCP server doesn't pass the 'ntp-servers'
option, the default is used and written to /etc/ntp.conf.dhcp, which is
then used by ntpd (and otherwise).

It would clearly be more ideal to use 'ntp.ubuntu.com' rather than it's
IP address, but it is the lesser of the two evils, since firewalls may
prevent contacting external NTP servers, causing clock drift and
subsequent NFS issues (eg with 'make'). For this reason, I request that
this report is escalated to a bug, rather than wishlist.

This is readily reproducible with Ubuntu 8.04 HH with stock
installation, and dhcp3-client 3.0.6.dfsg-1ubuntu9.

I disagree. A user would expect clicking an ed2k link to take them to
aMule if it is installed.

From Wikipedia: After installing an ed2k client on Microsoft Windows,
the ed2k:// protocol is optionally registered so that clicking on it in
the browser automatically starts the download.

I suggest this is marked as 'Low' or 'Wishlist'.

[Bug 207073] Re: printing via CUPS crashes Firefox

2008-05-24 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
As for more detailed, listing the steps needed to access the printing
dialog seems pointless. Reporting that doing so crashes Firefox is
precise enough.

Now, one piece of additional information that might be relevant is that
non-English locales sch as Finnish get a failure to print, instead of a
crash, because the progress bar is not displayed, due to a XUL error
that is reported. This apparently makes printing exit, instead.

Apport is enabled but didn't catch this crash. Otherwise, I would have
gladly let it provide the backtrace and other relevant information.

[Bug 205496] Re: [Hardy]Xsane needs root to operate scanner

2008-05-24 Thread Bruce Crowther
I know that this does not fix the bug, but FWIW it may help somebody.
For now, this works for me:

make a file /etc/udev/rules.d/50-scanner-kludge.rules, containing:
SYSFS{idVendor}==04b8, SYSFS{idProduct}==0130, MODE=664, GROUP=scanner
(substitute your vendor and product numbers shown by sane-find-scanner)
Add yourself to the scanners group.

Tried it, Oscar, but I still have to use sudo. Something beyond my feeble grasp
is still out of whack. I just change the ownership of the file once I have
scanned with sudo chmod 666, but it is a pain having to do it all the time
(just lately I have had an unusual need of the scanner, so it is wearing my
sense of humour!)

[Bug 234518] [NEW] gnome terminal transparent printer not work

2008-05-24 Thread corrado22
Public bug reported:

How do I do Transparent or pass-through printing (slave printing)?
Many terminals, and just about all terminal emulators, have the ability to do
local printing. It's sometimes called transparent printing or
pass-through, but the idea is that if the terminal sees a special key
sequence, it will start sending the data out some other port (parallel or
serial) until it sees some sequence that tells it to stop.
You can find the start-stop sequences in /etc/termcap: PN is the sequence to
start local print; PS is the sequence to stop. For example, if you look at the
vt100 entry, you'll see:
:PN=\E[5i:PS=\E[4i:\

Thank you for the bug report. Could you please install firefox-dbg (these are
the firefox debugging symbols) and try to obtain a backtrace (or crash report)
by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs
This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

It is of particular interest that you run apport-retrace -d against your
crash report before uploading.

Which flash package do you have installed?
Which Java package do you have installed?
Which video player and version do you have installed?

I feel this is an extension issue but since opera and firefox have

[Bug 230248] Re: Sauerbraten fails when desktop effects enabled

2008-05-24 Thread renegade444
I've since further isolated the problems to desktop effects because it also
creates issues for Chromium BSU, TuxRacer, and FreeCol. In Chromium, it causes
massive flicker. In TuxRacer, it causes missing graphics and black screens. In
FreeCol, it causes funny mouse I/O errors.
I'm guessing at this point that it might be a problem with the ATI proprietary
drivers in relation to my ATI mobility radeon 9700 chipset.

Again, everything is all good with desktop effects disabled.

Re: [Bug 228345] Re: gem1.9 - require 'rdoc/template' fails - missing dependency

2008-05-24 Thread Neil Wilson
I think it would be better if Ubuntu started packaging Ruby in the way
that people who use it actually require.

Explain to a real user why they need to do 'apt-get install gem'
rather than 'apt-get install ruby' to be able to use Ruby properly.
They look at you daft and go off and use CentOs or Gentoo instead
where you can install ruby 1.9 and gem just works.

This if you don't like it you can lump it attitude is not at all
helpful to those who need to use the distribution to get real things
done.

- The Ubuntu packages need to support the gem database. For example,
currently apt Mongrel does not tell gem that it is installed which
stops the mongrel cluster gem installing properly. That requires me to
use a compiler in the real world and is a clear example of the failure
of the current Debian Ruby binary packaging mechanisms. Apt must keep
the gem database up to date if it is a package that has come from Gem
so that Gem doesn't get confused and the gem dependencies work for gem
packages not in the apt database.

- We need a better way of packaging gems with apt - preferably
automatically in the majority of cases. That means getting away for
the esoteric CDBS Makefile system and embracing Rake which somebody
constructing gems can understand and include in their system. Gem is
merely a source packaging system like tar with a relatively primitive
binary generation system. Apt is so much more powerful. Yet there are
2500 gems and next to no apt packages. That demonstrates the failure
of the current packaging model.

- The notion that when a system adminstrator installs Gems they
*don't* want the binaries on the system path is silly. Packaging is
about automation and I'm sick to death of having to do manual
alterations to the system path just because of somebody's incorrect
idea of how the world is. If gems is installed then the bin needs to
go on the system path (at the end - after /usr/games) automatically.

On 24/05/2008, Lucas Nussbaum [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Feel free to install ruby from sources if you don't like the way it's
packaged in Debian/Ubuntu. So you get the same amount of support for
ruby and third party libs you install through gems.

No, I think it is time that the packaging system changed to support
real users doing real Ruby in the real world. There are plenty of
instances where Ubuntu has altered its policy compared to Debian. It
is preferable that the two are aligned but where there is a clear
problem with the solution offered by Debian then Ubuntu has the option
of going in a different direction. That is probably where this is
going if a solution can't be worked out. At the end of the day code
talks.

Nobody in Ruby (which is mostly Rails these days) is seriously using
the apt packages currently constructed because they are not fit for
purpose. Rails is just completely wrong, Mongrel is deficient as
pointed out above, there is no ferret package. I can just about use
the database libraries until I need a gem that depends on them - then
it all goes pear shaped. Not good enough when your business depends
upon it.

(Btw, interesting post on this topic:
 http://www.madstop.com/ruby/ruby_has_a_distribution_problem.html )

That's the usual technique of a clique grasping at information that
appear to support their position despite the overwhelming tide of
evidence against them. That evidence is Ruby people avoiding Debian
and Ubuntu and picking other distributions because their Ruby support
is superior, or installing compilers on their servers and using gem
because it is just so much easier.

What that article is really saying is that we need pragmatic
integration between apt and gem now. And that means realising Gem is a
*source* repository that just happens to have a simple cross platform
binary creator and a dependency system. It has advantages over apt in
some cases (allowing multiple versions of Rails on a single system for
example), but it useless in other regards (no postinst scripting,
appalling native code support and a disregard for FHS).

The systems need to work together efficiently and I've got some
reasonable well formed thoughts about how that should happened and I
know that you're doing something similar because I've been reviewing
what you've said in public.

So if you're interested in thrashing out a solution we can all work
with Lucas, then I'm all ears. Drop me a note offline.

[Bug 205895] Re: [Hardy] Wine 100% cpu usage

2008-05-24 Thread Martin Rehn
Just tested with wine 1.0-rc2. The symptoms are the same. Unlike armo, I
was not able to make them go away by avoiding SSL. I even switched off
SSL as best as I could in IE:s settings, then restarted it. That did not
have an effect.

[Bug 234519] [NEW] Compaq Presario C700 series (C756CA) always freezes the second time when resuming from Suspend to RAM

2008-05-24 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

I have a Compaq Presario C756CA Laptop (which is in the C700 family),
which has an Intel 3945 a/b/g wireless, Integrated Intel 3100 graphics
chipset (using whatever free driver installs by default in Ubuntu),
Samsung LCD display, Syntek Integrated Web-camera, Alps touch pad
(running apparently with the synaptic driver), SATA 160 gb hdd, 2gb ram,
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 ghz CPU. I have upgraded the firmware on the laptop
to the latest, which I believe is F31 (released in March 2008).

Running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), fully updated as of May 24, 2008. ( Linux
2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux ).
This problem fails out of the box. I also get the same behavior on
Fedora 9 RTM out of the box.

Suspend to RAM works the first time. Resuming is fine, the first time.

Suspending to RAM a subsequent time completely freezes the machine.
Can't switch to terminal window. Have to hard reboot (press and hold
power or pull battery)

Hibernate works most of the time, although half of the time it comes
back and says Hibernate failed (After I've already resumed from the
hiberfile ;))

Symptoms on second resume: No video. No image. No LCD Backlight; I
believe webcam cycles on and off once and hard drive accesses once, Caps
lock key is NOT flashing (kernel doesnt seem to be panicking). Does not
respond to terminal switches (ALT+F1, F2, F3, etc), makes no difference
if X is running or not.

I have tried some of the HAL fixes on
http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/index.html . No success.
I have tried competely disabling everything USB using RMMOD, disabling my Intel
3945 wireless using both RMMOD and editing the suspend modules list, no success.

sudo pm-suspend adequately reproduces the problem, various --vesa
options seem to make no difference, although I'm game to try a specific
combo if someone has one that works for this config. I tried using the
sleep.sh script in ubuntu, it produces the same behavior.

I will attach my HAL list, a DMESG report on first suspend, and a DMESG
report on the second suspend (which requires a hard reboot), although
I'm not sure that the second DMESG dump is good.

2008-05-24 Thread Kevin
I forgot to mention that it looks in the DMESG dump like it might be the
UVCVIDEO as well as the wireless, but it DOESNT * seem * to be because
of either of them. I did an RMMOD on both (I only mentioned disabling
the wireless in the original report), and it still died. Since UVCVIDEO
magically restarts itself even though its module was removed, I killed
the entire USB modules. At that point UVCVIDEO was definitely dead
(webcam wouldnt restart), and problem STILL exhibits itself (still
freezes on second resume)

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-05-24 Thread Vladimir Meremyanin
What should we understand from this example? Majority of people do it that
way?

Five years ago, or so, it was funny for me to play with hardware, as you
describe. Now it's not. And by looking around, most people (not all, I now a
lot of examples of geeks who are using their own Linux from scratch) are
using computer just as a tool. Ubuntu is targeted exactly those people as
far as I understand it (they are sometimes called 'beginners').

My point is: if Ubuntu was perfect, I can bet no one will ever use Windows.
Any step to perfection means more users = market share, automatically
leading to adoption on laptops/computers.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-cpu-freq-plugin

Release: Ubuntu 8.04
Package: xfce4-cpu-freq-plugin-0.0.1-0ubuntu2

The Properties dialog of XFCE4 CPU frequency plugin allows to check

the two other options which allow to display CPU frequency and CPU

Side issues:
- text size of frequency is too small and cannot be adjusted,
- no localization [system default language is German but all text is in

- package does not identify itself properly [no About dialog reporting

[Bug 234523] [NEW] corrupt index

2008-05-24 Thread Senekur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since Ubuntu 8.04 evolution corrupts the index (list of mail subjects) and
shows the wrong mail content, when clicking on a subject in the list.
This is very critical, because I cannot find the content of new mail, without
clicking through all the mails, even those in the junk box.
When I delete some junk mails, without reading everyone of them, it might even
be, that I just have deleted the content of some important mails.
The subjects of these important emails are still there, but the content behind
the subjects may be those of the junk mails.

This happens since the update on evolution 2.22.1-0ubuntu3.1. I've found some
posts in an Ubuntu forum, where other users are describing the same problem
since this update.
I've also experienced the error message Detected a corrupt mbox file or an
invalid 'From' header. since then.

By filing a new bug with the infoa nd ways as above it makes everyones life
easier by giving us more info that we need (maybe not all but more) that in
turn means we have to ask you for less info.
It also would have been nice instead of worrying about bug status you could
have answered the questions i asked for.
This is how firefox users should report bugs that is why we added that menu
item and why apport is used. Apport is not enabled by default on released
Ubuntu versions.

[Bug 203352] Re: Thunderbird stalls while sound is suspended

2008-05-24 Thread Ralph Wabel
Are you using pulseaudio?
If yes try to stop pulseaudio and start it again, worked for me
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio -D

If Thunderbird tries to fetch a mail, before I did this, it also freezes
as it uses sound alert when a mail is received. Either disable this or
try to restart pulseaudio after suspend

[Bug 234525] [NEW] kmail imap unduely slow

2008-05-24 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

On a slow connection, kmail+imap is almost impossible to use due to its
slowness.
My connection is particularly slow in the outgoing direction (about 10kb/sec).

What I don't understand is that attachments are supposed to be
downloaded on demand, but each time I check for mail, it takes for ever
when some messages have big attachments. Opening the task list I see

1. downloading message data. This is reasonably fast
2. sending message data. This is very slow. It seems to me that all attachments
of all new messages are sent back to the server !!

The second step always occur, even if I don't click on messages with
attachments.
Due to this, it is really IMPOSSIBLE for me to use kmail.

I have to use thunderbird, which has no problem at all. Everything is
fast and responsive with thunderbird (with the same IMAP server).
Attachments are downloaded only when I click on the message, and they
are not sent back to the server ! Dealing with messages with attachments
is about 20x faster with thunderbird...

I'm very sad of this because I like kontact very much.

(forgot to say I have a brand new kubuntu hardy 8.04)

Re: [Bug 228345] Re: gem1.9 - require 'rdoc/template' fails - missing dependency

2008-05-24 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
On 24/05/08 at 06:29 -, Neil Wilson wrote:
I think it would be better if Ubuntu started packaging Ruby in the way
that people who use it actually require.

Explain to a real user why they need to do 'apt-get install gem'
rather than 'apt-get install ruby' to be able to use Ruby properly.
They look at you daft and go off and use CentOs or Gentoo instead
where you can install ruby 1.9 and gem just works.

This if you don't like it you can lump it attitude is not at all
helpful to those who need to use the distribution to get real things
 done.

Ah ah.

Right. I'm waiting for your patch.

I'm waiting for your patches here as well.

Here too. Please send a patch.

At the end of the day code
 talks.

Yes, exactly. Stop talking, write a patch.

Nobody in Ruby (which is mostly Rails these days) is seriously using
the apt packages currently constructed because they are not fit for
 purpose.

It's strange, then, too see Ruby's popcon score. Probably they installed
it by mistake.

Rails is just completely wrong, Mongrel is deficient as
pointed out above, there is no ferret package. I can just about use
the database libraries until I need a gem that depends on them - then
it all goes pear shaped. Not good enough when your business depends
 upon it.

(Btw, interesting post on this topic:
  http://www.madstop.com/ruby/ruby_has_a_distribution_problem.html )

That's the usual technique of a clique grasping at information that
appear to support their position despite the overwhelming tide of
 evidence against them.

Lol.

Sure. Try to talk to the gems developer about that. I'm sure they will
listen to you. You might want to have a look at the ML archives first,
though, it's not like we tried. But I'm not going to engage with another
hateful discussion with the rubygems developers.

Yes, it works now.

But it is a four line 15k file now. Is it possible to add some line feeds to
make it
a) more readable in an editor, and
b) possible to put the file under version control?

Thank you,

[Bug 234528] [NEW] gstreamer-properties crashes with segfault with empty output pipeline

2008-05-24 Thread Peter Fletcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I have used gstreamer-properties to switch colours to fix a Video
playback bug in Ubuntu, setting the video output pipeline to:

ffmpegcolorspace ! video/x-raw-yuv,format=(fourcc)YV12 ! xvimagesink

This worked OK, until the colours became swapped again.

I stupidly set the video output pipeline to an empty string, whereupon
gstreamer-properties now crashes upon startup:
